  • In this video we are taking a look at the new update from Microsoft Flight Simulator, the 40th Anniversary Edition. This time we are going to look at the plane to make the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, the Spirit of St. Louis.
Built from a Ryan NYP, Charles Lingbergh has a number of modifications made to the plane, with movement of the wheels, fuel tank and oil tank amongst the changes. Some of the changes lead to him not having any vision out the front of the aircraft and instead, would have to yaw the plane to see forward. This led to a Ryan employee who served on a submarine to fit a small periscope to help make sure he didn't hit anything; it's not known if Lindbergh ever used it.
The original plane now lives in the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
