- Chinese New Year Celebration in Xi'an China
What's the Spring Festival like in China's oldest city?
Xi'an China: I arrived in the oldest city in China to celebrate Chinese New Year here, which is also known as the spring festival or Lunar New Year. I am joined by my friends @JetLagWarriors and we are super curious to witness and experience the Chinese New Year celebrations here in China. It's out first time being in China during the Chinese New Years period, so we were not sure what to expect!
Join us on New Years Eve here in Xi'an, China, a city full with history and friendly people. Do you celebrate Chinese New Year? If yes, what did you do? And which name do you prefer? Lunar New Years, Spring festival or Chinese New Year?

Thanks for the greeting, Ken Gao Fei....such a lovely name !! 😍

You said around 100 people taking photo with you.
That's make me stunning😂

China is so amazing. I congratulate the Chinese people for the wonderful country and their friendliness. I am ashamed how our western media and politicians tarnish with lies and manipulation that beautiful country full of history and many ethnic groups working together peacefully.
Thank you for your kind words and recognition 🙏
Thank you
that is correct
Imagine Ken getting $1 dollar for every photos taken. You'll be a rich man in very short Time!😂
You are welcome to China
18:57 It's a voice activated fountain. The louder people scream the higher the water goes. No tradition people were just having fun.
yes I visited in May and did exact same thing
yes,you are right bro,thank you
its a tradition bro, people had to scream to get a drink of water!
@@antwango no!just a voice activated fountain.
It’s fun that actually it’s not a voice activated fountain, as clarified by the tourism office, but people believe it is so they shout😂
After watching this episode, I have a deep feeling that when you embrace their culture, they also embrace you with smiles and enthusiasm. Happy Chinese New Year Ken 😊❤
That is the thing with Chinese civilization even they were conquered by Manchus from the north, the manchus embraced the chinese culture, something about chinese culture is largely based on philosophy that is based on yin and yang and many are found in Confucianism. There must be a reason why these traditions, cultures have lasted 5000 years, survived even the cultural revolution.
每个国家都有自己的文化,不需要牵强的拥抱,但必须尊重当地文化,而我们中国人民本就是好客的民族,都会欢迎大家的到来!❤
@@monipenny408 yeah, in long Chinese history, there were a lot similar things like this, such as the northern Wei dynasty, rule by tuoba clan, maybe Mongolians or something. They admire Chinese zhongyuan culture so much that even the emperor and nobilities changed their surnames to more Chinese-ish names. The inclusivity of Chinese culture is so fascinating!
Xi'an was part of the Qin Kingdom, which unified China and established China's first imperial dynasty in 221 BC. "秦尚黑", i.e., "The people of Qin favored the color black", considering it a noble hue of that era. This historical preference for black attire endures even today, which was probably why black clothing was recommended to you.
好专业的回复👍
你的描述整体具有专业性和准确性👍🏻

No hon, it’s because westerners like black. It’s considered to be an elegant high class color.
@@luceafarul579事实上秦朝信奉玄鸟,尚水,崇拜水,而水的图腾在中国的代表颜色是黑色,所以黑红两色确实是秦朝崇尚的颜色,他没有说错。
I get so emotional watching these videos in china, I spent a wonderful time there before COVID (2 years in total) With all the hate from the west which is factually 99% untrue I really wish people would open their minds and visit so they can see for themselves how much of a wonderful place china and the Chinese people are ❤ One day I will return to my spiritual home 🇨🇳
Thank you so much for these touching words. I hope you will be visiting China again very soon.

China is such an incredible country and the food, people and culture is stunning. Oh gosh, Ken, you really look gorgeous in that "emperor costume", so are Steve and Ivana. What a great day to be a celebrity ! So many selfies going on 👍👏 Xi'an is amazing and the night view is excellent...so colourful and beautiful. Am happy and proud that you have an enjoyable New Year eve with Stevanna there.
An awesome video with splendid content and footages ...so fun and entertaining. A big thanks for sharing, Ken.

The place they went to was the ancient city of Xi 'an, some of which have been built for more than 1000 years. There are many modern buildings in Xi 'an, and you can search for Xi 'an aerial photography in the oil pipeline. I live in Shenzhen, and Xi 'an is my hometown.
19:00 It's a voice-activated fountain. The louder the spray, the higher the spray
stupid but funny design😂
just for fun@@YuriSHENG-sg5sh
@@YuriSHENG-sg5shif you think about it, all entertainments are stupid 😂
@YuriSHENG-sg5sh actually, there is a funny story about the fountain. When the fountain was originally designed, it is not a sound-activated. One day, some tourists mistake it for voice-activated and they shouted at the fountain, of course, it doesn't work. But this little accident caught the attention of officials, then the fountain reformed to a voice-activated 😂
A foreigner shows up in Xi'an and a lot of people are very eager to take a picture with you, but in Xi'an 1500 years ago during the Tang Dynasty in China, the most revered city on the entire planet at the time, the locals were not at all surprised by foreign faces, and they even often see these foreigners walking through the city center of Xi'an in 1500 year ,just like the old painted artifacts, just like you and Steve did last night.
Happy Chinese new year "Ken Gao Fei",
May your career be like your Chinese name.
I think it's merely because of the Hanfu costume he put on. It's very rare for an international tourist like Ken to dress up like that in Xi'an. Folks would likely see them as actors, similar to those you find at Disneyland so no wonder they would want photos.
@@sonic-lu9ps Not really, In China, locals there like to take photos with foreigners, because they have never seen one, esp those not from Shanghai, which is a cosmopolitan city. 上海人看老外都看到厌倦了,只有来之乡村的才觉得稀奇。
@@ymhktravel That might be a case in the countryside or small county-level towns. It's 2024 now and I highly doubt if anyone would consider seeing an international tourist rare in any of the 2nd+ tier cities.
@@sonic-lu9ps China is not visited by many international tourists, compared to countries that are in Southeast Asia. Hence you hardly see people in SE Asia getting excited over foreigners that don't look like them. You'd hardly see locals there asking for photos with foreigners. Only in China that people want to take photos with foreigners, whether with or without permission. I'm a Chinese but when I go travel in Europe, even in small towns, people there don't ask for my photos because I look different. You think it therefore says anything about the psyche of the Chinese compared to other nationalities?
@@ymhktravel tourists, maybe not. as for international students and language teachers etc, China's got quite a substantial population of them.
You guys are having so much fun. I can’t stop laughing. Thanks for sharing💕.

@@KenAbroadI really like your friend's accent because it sounds interesting. I Lmfao every time I hear him speak. Of course your videos are also very interesting. I really like them. I recommend you to visit Xiamen, located in Fujian Province, it is the most beautiful and cleanest city in China (maybe it’s just my opinion. Haha).

The water fountain is voice activated. The more noise they make the higher the stream should be.
That technology is something of at least 50 years ago. Shocking not to know of it.
Let’s do this again soon!❤
Wishing everyone a great year of the dragon!🐉
21:08 What you experienced in Bangkok was southern China's new year tridition. Most Chinese expats were from the coastal provinces such as guangdong and fujian. They brought their tradition with them. That is why oversea Chinese dishes all taste like Cantonese food and well known Chinese phrases are mostly Cantonese too
The Chinese Population in Thailand are mostly Chaozhou/Teochew not Cantonese
@@h12vcl70chaozhou is the part of cantonese
Not expats, but early emigrants or diaspora.
@@yokaxi1011 I beg to differ. As a proud Chaozhou myself (from Indonesia with relatives in Thailand) I can assure you we are not Cantonese. Language and culture wise we are closer to Fujianese (Minnan) yet we are distinct and separate, let alone Cantonese.

Actually the official name of the festival is the Spring Festival. Or in China we simply call it New Year. It’s definitely not Lunar New Year, coz it’s not based on the lunar calendar. It’s traditional Chinese lunar-solar calendar.
omg thank you! I've been saying THIS! Nobody who's Chinese would ever call it Lunar New Year! White people from the west started calling it Lunar New Year because of Chinese hate! And that's racist AF.
yup, lunar new hear is like saying happy holidays. In China, it's Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, or New Year. In Vietnam, its tet. Each w/ different customs.
@@kentonkwok7481中国有两套历法,一种是国际上用的阳历,一套是自己传统的阴历,为了区分,才有农历新年说法,这节日正式名叫春节,在春节新年期间的节日过程叫着过年
It IS lunar calendar that Chinese traditionally follows. There's a saying that china built the country based on agriculture 以農立國. The moon movement has great effect on water level that affects agriculture, farmers can correlate the lunar calendar with their work, and this calendar was followed by all dynasties till the modern day china switched to use solar calendar in line with international standard. Hence the Chinese New Year was set based on lunar calendar. The name Spring Festival was used in modern china to differentiate the two new years.
@@freefree1219it’s a lunar-solar calendar, not just lunar calendar. The actual lunar calendar is called 太阴历。农历is lunar-solar calendar. Western people didn’t know the full history when translating.
China looks so advanced, like future travel to Year 2030 🎉
When you shoot the video, most Chinese people have already taken public transportation back to their hometowns because they need to celebrate the Spring Festival with their families on February 10th. That may be why you feel like there aren't many people at the airport, because you're lucky enough to miss the most crowded time. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Happy Chinese New Year🎊🎊🎆
Please know that Chinese observe and celebrate our new year based on calculations of the lunar combined with solar calendar. Lunar new year is now commonly used by other countries. I respect if they pick their own date and call it lunar new year but we Chinese have always called it chunjie (spring festival) and appreciate it if you would say happy Chinese new year especially travelling in China and making reference to Chinese celebrations and culture. Thanks for making great content in China.
I have to say that I watched 2 times this video 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Very pleasant to watch and watch again this Xian video ❤❤🥰👍

How many years will it take for American cities to develop like Chinese cities? Advanced, high-tech, clean, safe, and crime-free. I can't even imagine.
The US cities were far more advanced. They are just going downhill.
Regarding fireworks. It is true that major cities banned fireworks in the city centers due to pollution. Personal fireworks in the suburbs may be allowed but depends on location.
Also, I would recommend you visit the North Square of Big Wild Goose Pagoda, it has the largest musical fountain in Asia with evening performances. You were on the other side of the pagoda at the shopping street at midnight.
I mean…… How can you not love China ?!
Only don't badly brain washed by western MSM will never love China unless they physically visit China and see with their own eyes.
The place you are visiting is a sub-venue of the Spring Festival Gala, which is a television live broadcast program watched by almost all Chinese people around the world on New Year's Eve. The latest data shows that the viewing count has reached 210 million, possibly to prevent interruptions to the program, drones are prohibited from flying. Hope you guys enioy the holidays.
Very kind and patient of you to let so many poeple take pics with you.
wow so many people take photos with you!!you guys become super star
Even though everyone wants to take photo, it's not like India. Everyone is so respectful and not creepy like Indian men.
Happy New Year to Ken🎉I hope you enjoyed rest of your trip in China ❤I can’t wait for your next video
Happy Chinese New Year 🎉🍾️🎊✌️❤️🙏😘
that costumes plus your delicate feature make you like a character from a typical beijing opera, hahaah
The water fountain (about 19:00) is noise-activated, the louder the voice/noise, the higher the water goes.
hhhhhhh 笑死我了 看他一脸懵的看周围人大喊
China oldest city. With such a big crowd yet it is so clean, so organized, people are so disciplined. If this is India, can't imagine how the the floor will look like. Definitely more like trash land.
India also has ancient and beautiful culture, bro
@@user-zb9gs6ng3d nobody said India has no ancient temple and beautiful culture. We're talking about hygiene and discipline of the people.
You can praise China for all you like, but why bring India into this? You should be happy like all the people in the video.
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
虽然我认同你的表述,但是踩一捧一不太合适哦
Chinese people are the most welcoming people I have ever seen.
The 'fake' ice cream you ate is called “热奶宝” (contains cream, sticky rice and a ice cream cone), is one of the most popular snacks among Chinese youngsters. It is very interesting that you bumped into that guy selling this snack to you. Look forward to your next trip in China!
Hi guy, people at the fountain shout loudly because the fountain is voice-controlled. The louder you shout, the higher it sprays water.
Ivana looks beautiful in her outfit
Not too surprisingly, black was the primary color of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty, the owner of the Terracotta Warriors, more than 2,000 years ago.
Ken, you are going to be very famous in China as you have taken so many photos with people in Xi’an.
Lol there is a huge debate going on in China about fireworks in Chinese New Year. Some people just love the CNY vibes it brings while the other side just hate the air pollution and danger of damaging people. So officially it is not encouraged, but still there are designated areas where fireworks are allowed, mostly suburban and wide-open areas
Chinese New Year is the most important family festival in China, and the most important moment for family gatherings is New Year's Eve, when people rush home from all over the country and must arrive home before New Year's Eve. So what you see on the street are tourists, and there are not many of them, because at this time the Chinese are waiting for the New Year with their families
Thank you for sharing this ! Happy new year and enjoy your trip in china
Love this video❤
Happy New Year everyone!
Happy new year to you too😗💓
I think a good amount of people stayed at home watching the Spring Festival Gala with their family. If you have the chance Ken, I recommend you watch it too, just to get the vibe~
The Spring Gala is just too long, 4 hrs long. And only a few items I'm amazed by it, like the 大鱼 dance (on wire) and the 民族 section which is different. The rest are kinda boring which most foreigners would not understand it anyway, like comedy skit, which is too long.
Loved it!
