  • Lotus Elise S tested on twisty Hatta road by Motoring Middle East in UAE. Is there a purer expression of the art of driving? More on www.motoringme.com/reviews/lot... NOTE - in the video I say it has a carbon fiber body, of course I should have said it is a fiberglass body.

This is by far the best car review on MME right now! So energetic and so nicely presented that it could attract an indifferent person interest to the Elise. Despite being aware of the ethos that make Lotus cars, I've always kept them away from my radar (and maybe rightly so) based on knowing what LOTUS, practically, stood for (Lots Of Trouble...). Now I am interested in these little things!

Really enjoyed the enthusiasm of watching someone drive these great cars, it really captures how I feel every time I drive mine !
It's a real shame that "Lot's of trouble.." phrase still hangs around. It's roots trace back to cars far earlier than the Elise (Esprits et. al,) which were complicated cars for their day, and used lot's of parts (notably french gearboxes) that would indeed leave you stranded :(
I'm on my 3rd Elise variant, (The old Exige 220, an Elise, and now the new V6 Exige Roadster), and all have been trouble free. Not really surprising, as they are basically Toyota engines with a fairly simple chassis. Parts are cheap for the performance on offer, and whilst a specialist is best, any competent mechanic can take a spanner to them (as long as you tell them how to lift them up on a ramp properly.)
The V6 is my favourite so far, it's not quite as delicate as the Elise, but the low down torque makes it even easier to just flow along if you want. It has loads more grip, and feels more planted due to the longer/wider footprint. The noise it makes is much nicer too.
Hopefully MME will review one of those soon too! ;)

Thanks for the links, good write ups!
Pretty obvious you are a longstanding fan of the brand and the Elise/VX/Exige platform :D
(TBH once you've owned one, nothing else quite drives the same.)
Interesting changes for your part of the world. Very clever how they have added some vents behind the seats in the Exige!

Subscribed. I am the original owner of a 2006 Type 111R Elise in the U.S.
If driven with finesse and maintaining momentum the Elise can be faster than many higher powered cars on the right track.

Nice review, but please get the facts right when reviewing the car if you want to do justice to it - the Elise S has nothing to do with the Elise SC. The SC was from the previous generation and was poorly developed, so nothing to do with this variant. The ESC off button actually turns off the traction control, and you would end up in those sand dunes without it. The sport button is an ECU tuning program that give you a sharper throttle response, stiffer suspensions and a louder exhaust note, while backing the traction control a little bit for some sideways action. The car is made up of fibre glass, not carbon fibre. But yes, the Elise S is motoring Nirvana! I know all this because I drive one ;)

I entirely agree with you, I tried it with sport button on and off and there is a difference, so unfair to say they're there for the looks. Great car, most of all a smart car, nearly all the fun you can get from a ferrari (don't be rude on me guys, I know there is a difference) with affordable costs. Go Lotus!!

Beautiful review! My compliments Shahzad. I agree with you, the Elise has a low weight and great handling like a race car, but still at an affordable price. I know people which are satisfied with the Elise and drive it as a daily car. Bye 😉👍

There is never anything on a Lotus that is for show. Those buttons do as they say. So, yes it has traction control which is why there is a button to switch it off. Glad you like it though.

DPM is much more than traction control guys... the Dynamic Performance Management system is Lotus' branding for the cars electronic stability control systems, consisting of:
Corner Brake Control (CBC) - Helps when the car is heavily loaded at the front under partial braking and oversteer comes into play. The system will reduce brake pressure on an inside wheel or increase the braking pressure on the outside front wheel before the car becomes out of shape.
Drag Torque Control (DTC) - Lifting too fast off the throttle or a over-aggressive downshifts can lead to the engine braking the wheels too quickly causing slip or oversteer when cornering. This system can apply partial throttle to ensure stability in these situations.
Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) - If there is a road situation which leads to a wheel with less grip spinning then braking force is applied to this wheel to allow torque to be sent to the other wheel. This means better cornering performance and acceleration on surfaces where one wheel can grip and the other cannot.
Traction Control System (TCS) - Ensures no wheelspin under heavy acceleration.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) / Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) - Applies subtle brake pressure at the required wheel when the car becomes unstable.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)* - Common system on cars nowadays to reduce brake pressure if available braking torque is more than conditions allow to ensure that the shortest stopping distance possible is attained under all road conditions.
Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA)* - Detects emergency braking and increase braking if required to ensure maximum possible braking is used.
Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)* - Enhances stability by limiting rear brake pressures if the ABS is close to being activated when not required.
      Understeer Recognition
