    Tip for shoulder bags: Put a drawstring bag or any small bag in you bag to make a "pocket" for tape, skate towels, screwdrivers, ect. Creates a small and cost-effective option for a pocket rather than spending the extra money!

    I use a regular carry bag but carry it on my back like a backpack. It allows me to get through small doorways etc easily and have both hands free.
    I also just use a plastic bag for all the small things (tape, wax etc) that I store inside my helmet. Then at least they're not spread out throughout the whole bag.

    It's always funny when younger people make fun of people for having backpacks or roller bags because it's "not cool" or non-traditional. The same as when they make fun of you for washing your gear because of "tradition". Once you get old enough, you don't care about things like that, just how practical and easy it is to carry. The Bauer backpack works great for me and has plenty of room for extra training gear (ie. pucks, cones, etc) but my shoulder carry had loads more room. The awkwardness and pain of carrying the shoulder bag made me change it out pretty quickly though.
    Your advice of doing what's best for you is excellent. I've learned a lot from your videos and appreciate all the effort. Much thanks from Chicago!

    I put the gear into my bag in the order I will be putting it on. Jock and pants on the top; jersey, helmet, gloves etc on the bottom. It's a small-ish shoulder bag, not sure if it was even intended for hockey but fits all the gear just fine with a small bit of extra room, but since I don't carry anything extra and the fact I keep it well organized, it's fine for me.

    Okay, as an adult, 38yr old, also playing collegiate D2 club hockey, I have, because it was a gift, a Vaughn Goalie roller bag which is just a pouch with a couple side zippers. I'm 6-1, 207lbs, and it's a game of Tetris to get all my gear in there. (36+2 pads) My 12yr old son, who's bag is determined by what I like and buy, has a Grit Tower Goalie bag. Personally, I love this bag, it stands up which frees up valuable floor space, plus no one is stepping in or on your bag as they're moving around, it's a mobile locker, and the material is tough and takes a beating at a rink which does have stairs and multiple floors, but no other means than the stairs to get up or down. (good times) I'm used to carrying everything on my back, as part of various ground combat element infantry type units with the US Marine Corps. From Scout Snipers, Recon, to regular 0300 Battalions in war/conflicts and peace time for 12yrs, I should have a PhD in carrying heavy stuff. I don't, because that's stupid, but I can summarize it like this. Carrying heavy stuff sucks. It doesn't make you more manly, or more Hockey than anyone else (yes, used Hockey as an adjective) by carrying your crap in, or being able to afford the roller bag.

    We really wanted a Grit tower bag, but realized that it's rigid shape wouldn't allow us to stow it in the rear of our SUV with all the seats installed. We use a very large shoulder bag filled with equipment for me as Daddy Coach, my 6-year-old boy, and 5-year-old boy's gear combined. The bag is amorphous enough that I can stuff it well behind our 3rd row seats.

    My kid was the first on her team to have a Grit tower when we moved from the U.S. to Europe, and now half the team has them. I honestly have no idea how anybody can say that they clog up a locker room more than a carry bag. After 15 years of playing with a carry bag, they take up a huge amount of space on the locker room floor, it is impossible to keep them organized to find things, and they are difficult to haul around. If you have to haul team gear, yeah, maybe a carry bag is the best solution. But for your own gear, I wish I'd gotten a Grit tower like my kid's years ago.

      @josephgschwartz Před 7 lety +3

      I recognize that a wheel bad is easier for the individual but for the rest of your team they get in the way. As for the grit bag you can't step over them so again you're in the way. Maybe if you're on a 10 guy men's league team they're okay but not a 15-20 man roster.
      All that said, if you need to use public transit and walk long distances then I get the choice to go wheel bag.
      Also note that goalies should only use wheel bags in my opinion.

    • @petergeyer7584
      @petergeyer7584 Před 7 lety +3

      I don't get this. A Grit tower takes up a third of the floor space of a carry bag. I have played on enough senior teams consisting of people only using carry bags, and there typically isn't a square inch of space left to walk through the locker room without stepping on somebody's bag. At least with towers you can walk around them.

    • @josephgschwartz
      @josephgschwartz Před 7 lety +2

      Peter Geyer you can't step over them. On the east coast of the US the locker rooms are to small to avoid them getting in the way. Maybe they work better in your rink.
      I guess it's also a tradition thing, pro, junior, and high end travel teams all don't use wheel bags. Particularly in the case of travel teams, they also take up more room the trunk of a car.

    Need help! I really want to start playing Ice Hockey, however my parents say it's too late for me to start playing it as I am 14. In my opinion I think it's never too late to start playing Ice Hockey. Also Christmas is coming up soon, so I could persuade them I could get the full requirement's for Ice Hockey aka the kit. Much would be appreciated if somebody helps me by giving me tips how to persuade them. Another reason to why they're not letting me start playing Ice Hockey is because I do fighting and I've got a World Championship coming up soon, so they're saying that I should be more focused on that instead of starting Ice Hockey.

      +Jonathan Marsh I agree, it's never to late to start! I started playing hockey in my early 20's! you have plenty of time. Saying that, your parents do have a good point. If you have something incredibly important and physical coming up, it might be best to focus 100% of your attention on that until it's finished. You could also start hockey once you have more availability and time.

    I'm a recreational skater and I just bring my phone, money, my skates and skate guards. How should I bring them? Should I carry them by the blade? Use a bag? Something easy and convenient please

      I think u should buy a sports bag, they are slightly smaller than the small hockey bag. I go skating with my skates inside (skate guards on) and i have gloves or anything else inside.
