Another tip is don't be that guy that doesn't pass
+Tim Power Or don't be that player that passes to much. Great point
+Hockey Tutorial Or the guy who screams that he's free for the passes even though he isn't.
Tim Power i got a 10/10 for team play and knows the guy who plays wing with me i love being a team player and i think i pass a bit too much
I pass too much ill sauce too a teamate when i have a free shot
i pass too much
My first time was a nightmare, I couldn't shoot or pass to save my life. But, I could play defense, I was blocking shots, breaking up plays, and throwing big hits. But my offense was crap because I was afraid of turning it over, or shooting wide. First timers reading this, DON'T BE ME. You're never gonna get good if you never try! Also, don't take chirping (trash talking) to heart, just chirp back!
Crlongboarder Hi is chirp means shoot? There is a kid told me nice chirp. I have no clue what it mean XD it was my third try on hockey.
Melissa Toh chirping is slang for talking trash
@Mike Keller native hockey is just different man haha
My first scrimmage was like that. The guys I played with (which were all dudes old enough to be my dad) complimented me and told me I was a beaut. They noticed how much I have very cat like reflexes and gave me the nickname “The Kitty” (it’s also because I won’t shut up about cats especially my four legged 3 year old)
Never ever play without a cup. You might want to have a family someday.
Good tip!
+Lila Ellsworth of course u dumbass
Yes, the cup is for your pee wee.
Mike Fitzgerald then you won't have to worry about pulling out
One of my teammates played a whole season without one.
😂
Check for unscrewed water bottles
Not even joking that happen to me yesterday
i going to pull this in my chamionship
why
because plus it did not work everyone checked
Super Boots yes perfect
Don't be the guy that stays on too longg
Them 3 minute guys i hate them
+Broughton 90HD I got one guy that doesn't skate unless he has the puck. hangs around the blue line. it's the most frustrating thing in the world.
SpikeyRocket063 Go offside when they have the puck. Play stops, kick em off.
A guy who's staying on the ice more than 90 seconds is not playing at maximum effort thus he's useless.
I would bench the guy for a few shifts so he gets the message.
@@kylejmcclure6 That's the kind of guy you don't pass the puck to ... let him float out there until he gets the message.
"Don't be like Ovechkin."
Best hockey advice I've ever heard.
Dont *try* be like ovechkin
Ovi can do it, because he is Ovi
Was until 2018.
And he just won the Stanley Cup last night . . .
12T90 LSD25 12T90 LSD25 John Delaney I think the moral of the video is to be aware. Don’t try and be a pro when you’re not, but have fun and try. Ovechkin can do all his stunts because he is a pro, gets paid top dollar for it, and has more experience than a first timer.
Don't be afraid to block a shot
Don't be the guy who gets a delay of game penalty
James Hong And don't be the guy who accidentally leaves the hanger in his sweater
*coughcough* Hossa
+Dem0litionB1rD LOL i remember that
what is a delay of game penalty in hockey?
@Russ Hughes It is when a player deliberately does something to delay the game. For example, purposely shooting the puck out of play or purposely knocking the net off would be a delay of game penalty. There are other ways to get the penalty, but those are the most common ones
34 years old, never played on an organized team and have really wanted to start. This may be the motivation.
Just started at 17
Don't listen to him for some things like when he said don't ever pass it back when crashing their zone it's overall a really good idea
@@scorchykinz dude how's it going I want to start I'm 16
I played in my first organized hockey game at 37. Scored my first goal the second game of the season and have been hooked ever since. DO IT!!
34 myself played a street hockey as a kid but want to get back in it. Hope you kill it in the future
jesus chirst, any new guys watching this video relax. your overthinking this sport wayy too much. you can start at any age as long as u have the physical ability to do it (atleast one arm to hold the stick, you technically need nothing else :) ). for your first game, be sure you know how to skate enough were you can turn, stop, and skate forward (you should be able to do all these things comfortably like its walking with enough practice, its easier then you think. and for your first game just have fun, dont pay too much attention to how your doing because i dont care how long youve been practicing your gonna suck... really bad. dont expect to be gretzky your first game (if you dont know who he is look him up). Seriously just have fun, smell the ice and work on getting better in practice not in games
So if you’re skinny do you think you should be worried about playing hockey?
@@pauljorge5089 Why would you be? You don't have to play in any full contact league (plenty of house leagues). Besides I've seen plenty of good players who were toothpicks.
this is sooo helpful. i’m thinking of joining a team when covid gets a little better because hockey is a contact sport. the only thing i’m worried about is fights breaking out and when players from the other team check you really hard.
@@libbyspafford4618 most rinks will suspend fighters for a season 1st offense keep your gloves on protect yourself and "turtle" most in house leagues are no check, but keep your head up anyway.
@@spoiler5oo ohh ok thx!
Don't be the guy who does not know how to stop
Lol
+Bobby Mac learning it at the moment :D
The wall is your friend. At least mine atm. Lol.
You can still make Team USA 😁
That's what the boards are for!
Great advice. I would just add one thing for beginners: relax. If you are too nervous, your will show it in your play.
Don't be the guy (me) who skates on the ice then you realize you left your gloves in your bag.........
Same
Refused B I accidentally brought 2 left gloves
I almost did that a couple days ago at practice.
Yh
@@kmacdizzle ik so funny lol
first hockey game on Sunday wish me luck!!!
good luck
How did you do?
Good luck from Canada!
Mohammed Kabir Molla, good luck. I’m starting hockey next month.
NNGaming hey so how’s your team doing?
My first ever game was a game in u18s, I went out on my first shift and scored on my first shot but was wearing the wrong jersey so the goal was given to someone else...
OH MY, LITERALLY GOING TO BE MY FIRST GAME
Tom Woodward same except I had the right jersey
Riightt
*slow clap*
How’d you get the wrong jersey?
Dont be that guy asking for tape every single game😂
Cameron me for sure, lol
i had hockey tryouts last week and forgot to take my skate guards off. it took me a full 30 seconds to realize what was wrong 😂
Had my first ever game at 24 last week and it was a blast! Got a few good contacts with the puck. Luckily we had 3 lines so I didn’t have to spend too much time out there. Like he says a few times, HAVE FUN! I told my team that i was brand new and that I was just wanting to try something new and that I’m teachable so just help me and they were all very accepting and made it great.
I'm seriously so stoked I found this channel! Seriously so great to see hockey so big in the UK, I'm an Aussie who's been living over here for a bit and really great having so many opportunities to watch and play games after a 15 year break. Loving all the hockey tutorial tips. Keep up the epic work! :)
Thanks for these man, I'm 31 and getting into it in the US. Great series and really appreciate putting in your time to help others! Keep it up!
Benjamin Kennedy You are most welcome! Thank you for watching and I hope we can continue to give you helpful tips.
I start my first game this coming Friday, 16 and here's my year one I honestly can't tell you how much your videos have helped me from stopping to crossovers. Thank you for all the advice
You still playing at 23?
Just turned 35....first league game ever is next month...just been doing public and pickup since the summer
Thanks for the awesome tips.. just started playing hockey after a 27 year break. Just love your channel
I'm so glad you made this video. I'm playing my first ice hockey game tomorrow and this video is just what I needed. Thank you.
Lol I wish I watched this last week when I had my first pickup game. I’m 25 and It was rough, I practiced for 2 weeks before the game and that didn’t stop me from looking like a complete noob lol The good thing is that the guys I played with totally understood and gave me tips and encouragement to keep going and it was SO MUCH FUN! I can’t wait to get back on the Ice, getting better with time and making friends :)
How have things evolved?
KEEP YOUR STICK ON THE ICE! haha!
Yes that’s a big one. Newbies love keeping their sticks high.
Nice Red Green reference.
And if the women don’t find ya handsome...
Man I watched this 6 years ago when I was about to play in my first game. This video helped me so much. Scored a goal with 4 minutes left in the 3rd period. I was so nervous but played surprisingly well. Ended up second in the league in scoring with 14 goals and 12 assists in 14 games.
I absolutely love hockey and want to play and you make things make so much more sense for me, hopefully I can play soon even if its rec
Just had my first hockey group lesson today and it was awesome! So fun
Thanks for the video, I just started on a team and my first game the guys were complaining about some mistakes I made and I kinda got upset. This video makes it a little easier to deal with!!
Especially if you are playing with adults... Some people think they are superstars regardless of whether or not they used to be actually good or not. Remember why you are there and always try to get better.
Dj PhEaL You are most welcome! First games can be tough, keep your head up and communicate with your team. Thanks for watching
I've had to remind ex NHLers that they probably weren't born with skates on
Hi! I had my first hockey match a few weeks ago. It was REALLY fun. Had a few things to learn (lines and gates mostly) but overall i was happy about it. Had my second one yesterday and i noticed the improvement. I was keeping the puck in the attacking zone (i think thats what you call it) and taking it out of our defensive zone. Overall had loads of fun and i'm now desperate for my own jersey :D Thank you Chris and HockeyTutorial for the quick tricks and tips, they were really helpful 😄🤘
Really glad we could play a part in helping you. Thank you and keep playing !
Congrats! But it's a "game" not a "match"! Good an ya and keep givin' er!!! From Canada...
Fantastic video. Got my 1st game coming up in 2 weeks time and this has been really good advice.
I've been playing for a while, but for beginners, to be honest, you nailed it. These tips are very helpful and I wish I would have had this video before my first game. Awesome job man.
can we talk about how godly that goal was at 1:11
Really good tips, thank you!
Thank you for watching.
Im joining a team this September. Super excited. I gotta say these videos you’ve made have been a massive help in getting me started
Good luck!
Thanks for you videos, hey are really hemlpful! I'm going to come back to hockey in september and even if I did hockey for ten years, I need some refresh!
My first game, it felt very chaotic. Didn't know where to be and when to be there. (stay in you lane!) faceoffs were confusing too. After about 2 or 3 games I started to feel very comfortable just knowing the game. I started about 2 years ago and eventually got onto my cousins mens league team. Best thing iv'e ever done.
Don't go Patrick Kane in the warm ups
SirNoName yah I'm a goalie and I hate it save it for the other goalie
Don't celly if your already killing the other team. It will turn into a dirty game
so no raping?
Lmao 😂
No practicing dekes on the goalie in warm ups, they are basically pussies and will get real vagina sore. every goalie thats told me no dekes in warm ups, sucks at break aways and shoot outs . And they are telling the team b4 they even play that they are a seive!...
Gave up playing hockey when I was 10 and I'm only just getting back into playing inline hockey - now I'm turning 21! These videos are a massive help and fun to watch, unlike the ones drilling into you how to play down to a T. A big thanks to Hockey Tutorial from Northern Ireland.
Guy Coleman Thank you for sharing your story, really cool that you found your way back to hockey. Glad we could help :) NeverStop!
Looking to learn a bit more about the game, found this & it contains SO MUCH that applies to life, things I've tried to teach (history & Anthropology). Almost everything said can be translated into general or even specific life advice. Thank you ♥️♥️♥️♥️
amazing video. making the point that hockey is a life style. It's possible to have fun while also being professional and trying hard. seems like the guys i see at the rink either take it too seriously, or don't try at all.
+Ilya Bryzness First point of hockey is all about having fun, whats the point of playing if you don't enjoy it? Glad this video helped.
holy shit! you were in finland :D i used to play there every day when i was a kid!
We visit Helsinki very February. Beautiful city and the people are awesome.
I think you nailed it with "have fun". My first game on a rec team I made plenty of mistakes, asked some of the guys, and found out they really didn't give a crap. They were more interested in going to the bar afterward than the game. It was a drinking team with a hockey problem. But that "team" aside, my best games were the ones I enjoyed most. Confidence was not an issue, worrying about mistakes was not an issue, when I realized like you said, we're not playing for the Stanley Cup - it's supposed to be fun, and when I could relax and just have fun I actually played better too.
Thanks for the tips! :) even though I’m playing youth hockey, these tips will still be helpful. I’m having my very first hockey game tomorrow and I’m 100% confident. Thanks! 👍
dont face the boards for too long. i learned the hard way. LOL
JayR49 LETS GO DEVS BABY. My first games of bantam I kept my head down and I got leveled once lol.
JayR49 let go pens
JayR49 Go Flames Go
Could u do a video about where to stand at faceoffs please , thanks
Great suggest! This is a shameless excuse to use our drones! We'll have something up in 2 weeks for you.
Played as a kid for a little over ten years and stopped just before high school and have always regretted it. Recently moved to Northern Colorado and really want to get started again. Most rinks around me require full equipment for Stick & Puck but I dont have everything yet..
Ahhhh I'm looking to get involved with the club hockey team at my university and these videos are so helpful. Thank you!!!
Really glad we could help, thats what we are here for.
Oh man the drunk one is my life. My D partner showed up so hammered once I literally had to push him into position one game haha.
Though my personal first time tip is to remember to stretch. Seen too many guys get micro-MCL tears and be out for 6 weeks after skating hard for their first game.
Thanks for this. Planning on starting playing next season.
SirBrittanicvs You're most welcome! Thank you for watching.
Love how you think it's that easy to start and play hahahaha moron
Just thinking about wheather or not to begin to play hockey. This was good video with some good points on it.
This was awesome. Thank you.
more pls
One more tip; keep your eye on the freaking game. We swapped sides between the 1st and 2nd periods, and I didn't realise. I saw the side we were on in the 1st period was empty and thought, 'woah, where are our D-men?' The puck was about to move there so I yelled at the girl who was playing my wing (who has only been playing 6 months) to 'get back over to the other side'…and looked like a d*ck.
I didn't mean it in a nasty way…but if I'd been fully locked in I would have realised we had swapped sides and she was in exactly the right place, and would have saved myself the embarrassment!
Lizzi Burgess I lined up for a face off on the wrong side 😂 Took a while to live that one down
Man at 0:40 is that Oulunkyla ice rink in Helsinki? That's so cool! Didn't know you were filming vids in Finland, love ur stuff!
+Peter P We visit Finland every year. Normally late Jan or early Feb. Check out our pond hockey videos from Finland.
started in my mid 40's.. been having a blast for the past few years. Im sucky at skating and will never beat anyone one on one, but learned how to get goals from rebounds and screening the goalie for others.. It helps to play with guys who are cool and not looking to put you into a E.R. room.
I'm just going to do this even though I'm super late. More will follow and hopefully see this.
I could "skate" in 9th grade. And that's all could do. Never held a stick in my hands until 14 years later when a buddy of mine who at one point was going to be drafted before he decided it wasn't his calling got me back on the ice. He moved home and bought me gear because he just loves the game. He taught me a good amount, but I promise what you learn in open skates doesn't equate to the same production in a game. My first real game was a serious embarrassment. I was just a fill in for 4 games and I did make one good breakout pass play, but looked like a bender and couldn't stop to save my life. I also got a breakaway pass and fell straight on my butt at center ice. Dang... Fast forward a few months during a separate rec league that was more like practice I had 15 goals in 8 games. This includes 3 hat tricks and a few breakaways. The point is that this video is right. The number one key is to have fun. And you will.
My tips:
Never give up. If you truly enjoy it, don't give up. You will have good games and bad game. I had games I wanted to quit because it was such a terrible showing, and the next game I went off. Be mentally stable and understand that these things happen.
Always try to get better. You can practice in so many ways off ice. For me I loved to work on hand-eye. I'd just take a puck and flip it around. Hand to stick, stick to hand, stick to stick. It really helps on so many levels.
And even though this is a long comment, to keep it a little shorter my last tip is watch PROFESSIONAL hockey.
One compliment I have gotten even when I was the worst guy on the ice was knowing my position and where to be. Watching professional hockey will teach you so much about your position on a professional level. Not just the skills part but the overall knowledge of the game. Believe me when I say I'm one of only probably 6 people on my team that actually watch hockey regularly. And it shows. I don't care how hard your shot is, if you never get into position, you won't get the pass or the opportunity. Learn your position.
Thanks for shoutout bud, also thanks again for the video appreciate it !!!
Bring a water bottle
Simple but great tip
Hockey Tutorial thanks for giving me tips
Thanks! I needed this
Thanks for the tutorial, man! I am a beginner myself and this is better than any other sport.
Don't be the guy who plays with his chin strap undone. It's not cool. Especially when you're making a Do's and Don'ts video and get to a Don't when playing contact hockey, film you getting crushed and your bucket goes flying off. More than looking dumb though, hitting your head on the ice is not cool unless you like concussions and getting knocked out.
I'm a beginner and my last play I had it undone because I forgot to rebuckle. Lol I didnt know that was a thing
I remember my first game was tied 2-2 with 2:00 remaining and I went to clear the puck out of my end and I sent it in front of the net and the opposing player got a nice one timer from me. DONT PASS THE PUCK IN FRONT OF THE NET ALWAYS OFF THE BOARDS
dump it along the boards*
+KuroiTatsu70 same fucking thing dumbass
+KuroiTatsu70 dont be that person that corrects everyone 😂
Im famous on my team for this
Great video man, very informative.
Thank you this got me ready for my first game and what not to do
I have played hockey. Really love the game. Lack of ice rinks in Ireland doesn't help. I have just done my test for level 2 coaching exam. If I pass I well be a iihf level 2 coach
cenaboyle I know, there are no ice rinks here. That's why I'm playing inline.
cenaboyle Dang, an IIHF coach, that's really awesome. Hope it works out, mate.
I hope it does. Maybe I coach in the states etc.

moved to canada a few months ago for uni and i decided to join a hockey team bc it was too cold to keep playing footy. I've got my first game tonight and im studying up XD thanks for the tips, mate!
Great video, thanks
The video was great. Being a Canadian, I laugh at things like this, but then again, some of us started playing before we could tie our own laces. I enjoyed this video, and it made a ton of sense for new players to the game. Let's just agree that we drop the "ice" from ice hockey and just call it hockey :)

I have my first hockey game tommorow sooooo nervous. I did just start at the end of 2020 so I'm not that good. But my coach is letting me play. So thank you this helped.
EDIT: I have had over 30 games including half of last season and this full season. I'm one of the better players on the ice now! I cant believe how far I've come. My first game did not go very well neither did my second but my third game went pretty well and it got better from there. Also justnremeber that it takes time to learn new things and just keep practicing. That's how I got on a team and why I'm one of the better players on my team. I didnt get to play that much last season cause I started in the middle of it, but I am now playing a full season and have played probally about almost 10 to 15 games and I have scored 3-4 times this season I did score one last season when I was playing half of that season idk how I got that goal though I was really suprised (and that was probally my fifth game ever played) but anyways watching this video almost a year ago brought me to where I am now! I really appreciate the help! To anyone who is having there first game and is reading this we could talk about anything you need to know if your nervous or confused! "Don't talk much." I hate when the worst players do the most talking. Keep your mouth closed and your ears open. Ask questions and try to improve on your own weak areas. Guys will cheer you on as you get better no matter your level as long as you're trying to learn and improve.
Good advice. Cheers.

Don't try to dangle evertone. You're not Crosby
Crosby never dangles anyone but okay
That one clip might be the smallest ice I've ever seen real hockey played on. I've seen kid's ice that is used to teach kids but never anything that small where there is checking. That seems like a shit show.
Why have I only just found this channel? Awesome stuff bud. Although the dig on Ovi hurt haha
First time i played i was 4 years old im 14 now so about 10 years of playing i remember stepping on the ice and struggling HARD but i kept trying and trying and at that age it didnt matter what i looked like on the ice i just wanted to act like my favorite players i would see on tv i remember i made it across the center red line and back and i was so happy i set goals for myself if you are dedicated you will get better but it dont happen overnight and if people say harsh things to you just brush it off they just dont want you to make it but that said be sure to open yourself up to constructive criticism hopefully if u read this it can help you because your not alone everyone was in your shoes at some point so dont lose your confidence and most importantly HAVE FUN!!
