Kenmore Washer Fills with Water then Stops

  • If your Kenmore or Whirlpool Top Loader Washing Machine fills with water and then stops but it isn't the lid switch it might be the same problem I had. I demonstrate the problem with the washer plugged in but once you identify your problem you should unplug the unit so you can finish the job without risk of shock.

    This morning I didn't know anything about washing machines. This afternoon my washing machine filled with water and cut off. I went to youtube and found this video. Now I know a lot more about washing machines and saved $120. 11/10 would rename my first born son Jeff again.

    Thank you! This was our washer's exact problem, and my husband was able to fix it within 30 minutes of watching this video, for free! it was the same gray wire from your follow-up video that was all burned up--in fact, ours was burnt up and broke off while we were trying to push the white clip back into place! So he forgot about rigging this and instead went straight to re-attaching the wire. Ours is an Estate by Whirlpool. Not just a Kenmore problem.

    Jeff - THANK YOU so much for publishing this. I had the same exact problem. Mine started with the failure after a supply hose had broken. After replacing the hose, the washer wouldn't agitate or cycle. I couldn't figure out why it would have a double failure. But perhaps the water caused the arcing. Your guidance took me right to the root cause. I really appreciate your post.

    Thanks a million! I was looking for a video on a Kenmore 500 to figure out how to get the top off and access the back of the machine to replace a water intake value. Saw some other repair videos with different methods for different machines, but just wasn't confident or didn't know the putty knife would be what would work on the Kenmore 500 and didn't want to break anything. You save me a lot of grief.

    Thank you!! Washing machine is working again!! My mom's washing machine would do nothing after filling with water -- no agitation, no spin. I followed your video. I checked both connectors (lid switch & bottom main) & they looked good. Nothing appeared rusted or discolored. So I just disconnected and reconnected them to make sure nothing was loose. I followed the wires and tried to tighten all connection points just in case it was just that something was loose. I also wrapped a zip tie around the bottom connector to secure the connection. Put it all back together, plugged it in, crossed my fingers, and it is working!
    Also, the machine was full of water and clothes. I was so relieved to be able to troubleshoot the machine by taking off the front cabinet. I had no idea how to drain it otherwise. And there was no way I could have moved it myself. Thank you again for this video!

    Mystery Solved.
    I wonder how many good motors and other parts have been unnecessarily replaced to solve this problem.
    1 thing I can add here is: you and others have been left with a less than ideal motor wiring harness connector. I've had good results using Hot Melt glue to keep connectors together with good positioning. If done right, connectors can still be easily taken apart again by cutting the glue w/ a razor, sharp utility knife etc.

    My dad was a Sears tech for like 30 years, back when repairs were a thing instead of trying to sell customers replacement machines. Been having problems with our older Kenmore but most the hardware looks the same-just different style knobs...i'm gonna see if i can fix the problem and earn his respect/blow his mind...cuz this seems congruent with the symptoms. Gonna disconnect the power supply 1st before dinking with stuff though, LOL! Also...old washers and dryers loaded with various metal, plastic, aluminum cans, ceramics, clay, concrete & dirt are a great way of adding armor to the walls of your home during the coming global economic collapse, beware the hordes of desperate 'zombies' that may try to invade your place of residence...and making it more heat/cooling efficient too!

    This must be the problem with our machine. Have not had it long, but no warrenty. It would fill with water but not drain or spin or agitate. Then after a week or two and my husband lifting the unit and tilting it to access the belt inside, he figured he would try running it and it worked again. I will be honest that I am afraid to try running a load. Been doing laundry the last two weeks at our in laws and in the barn. Replacing the lid switch should rule it out as the problem however the connector to the lid switch sounds like the problem especially since you said it is toasted. I have the same problem. My connector wasn't burned, but the wire was toast! I touched it and it broke away from the contact. Do we know what causes this? I'm wondering if replacing the wire will do or if there's a bigger problem here.

    • @swimsuitcookies
      @swimsuitcookies Před 9 lety

      Jennifer Starr I don't know for sure what burns the connector but my theory is the connection isn't very good or there is a short distance between 2 pieces of the connector and that the electricity has to jump from one to the other which is called arcing. The arcing generates substantial heat, enough to burn and melt the connector. In regards to your wire, it sounds like at this point you will have to replace it since it broke but that won't fix the root cause of the problem which is the arcing. My attempt to fix the arcing is by physically pushing the contacts closer together and hopefully eliminating the arcing. It seems to be a design flaw so even replacing the connector doesn't seem to fix the problem. It's a poorly designed connector.
