  • I have made this video to pull together all that the Lord has taught me about the 'Exception Clause' and its meaning over the past 30 years.
    The exception clause in Matt 5v32 and 19v9 has been used to give an allowance for divorce and remarriage as the Greek word used here - porneia - has more recently been translated as 'sexual immorality (ie adultery.) This is not the correct translation of this word and in this video I will explain how God led me to the correct understanding of these verses, which do not permit divorce and remarriage at all unless there has been 'fornication' in the betrothal period prior to the marriage ceremony....
    Relevant 'exception clause' verses found in the Bible:
    Matt 5v32: But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for fornication, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
    Matt 19v9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for fornication, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
    Luke 16:18:Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
    Mark 10:11-12; “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”
    Other relevant verses:
    Romans 7v2-3 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
    1 Cor 7v10-11 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.
    1Cor 7v39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.
    What constitutes a covenant marriage? A covenant marriage is a marriage contracted between 2 single people who have never before been in a covenant marriage. Widows and widowers are also free to marry and enter into a covenant marriage as long as they marry another person who is also free to marry.
    If a single never before married person enters into an adulterous marriage with a divorcee and subsequently the union is ended the single person would then be free to marry into a covenant marriage.

    Evidence supports the truth that Porneia is not "a general term for sexual immorality, esp. adultery."
    PORNEIA - πορνια, feminine, origin from pernemi, to SELL, esp. of slaves, lit. “harlot for hire,” to offer one’s body for sale, a prostitute (Hauck & Siegfried, 1968, p. 580).
    The root is πορν (porn); πορνεία is a substantive of the verb πορνεύω, “to prostitute oneself.” Πορνεία means “the practice of selling access to one’s body” (Harper, 2011, p. 369).
    Nowhere is porneia in the NT or the Septuagint used as a term for homosexuality, adultery, incest, or bestiality. Lexicons have added these sexual deviancies in the last 60 years. If you believe that porneia is a term for these sexual sins, please cite the verse and present your evidence.

      Yes it did happen then unless there was obvious evidence before ie the woman was caught in the act or pregnant.

      I know, it's tough Daniel. You can only do your best to live holy and make the right choices. None of us are perfect. Set your mind each morning to live for Jesus and ask him to give you the strength you need to resist temptation. We are all on a journey towards holiness and its a battle. But one that you can eventually win 🙏

    So, if I repented and came out of an adulterous remarriage, does that mean I must remain single for the rest of my life?
    Some say that is what is implied by Jesus saying "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery."
    Backed up by the fact that Jesus told the woman at the well that she had had 5 husbands.
    Just trying to sort it all out.

      Hi from what I understand if you marry a divorced person Jesus never even calls that a true marriage. He never calls the people in a remarriage ' husband or wife' if you look at the verses he just says anyone who marries a divorced person commits adultery - Luke 16:18, Mark 10: 11-12, Matthew 19:9. And in Romans Paul simply calls anyone who remarries an 'adulteress' So it seems clear to me that if you leave a marriage where you were an adulteress not a spouse then you would be free to enter into a true covenant marriage.
      As for the 5 husbands they could have all died, or more likely some of the husbands could have been during a betrothal which could be ended if she was unfaithful. Scholars have noted that this story appears to be modelled on a standard betrothal 'type scene' from Hebrew scripture, particularly that of Jacob in Genesis 29.[8] This convention, which would have been familiar to Jewish readers.

    Serious question, since God honors ONLY 1 st covenant marriage…the remarriage after divorce is considered adultery. Since this is the case, can the person who married the divorcee marry? Since their “marriage” to the divorcee was illegitimate??

    Hey sis I wanted to help you out with this as I used to believe exactly how you now believe about the exception clause being fornication. I used to teach it the same way as I watched David Pawson and many other teachers on this. I now believe exactly the same way the early church believes. There is no such thing as divorce and remarriage. Fornication does mean all sexual immorality including adultery. Looking at Jeremiah 3:8 God divorced Israel for their adultery and Israel also committed fornication. You can see that because it says Judah played the “harlot” ALSO. Harlot in Hebrew is fornication.
    Also divorce ONLY means to separate. It cannot end a marriage covenant ONLY death ends a marriage covenant. Paul also says this in Romans 7 and Galatians 3:15 how no man can annul a covenant once it’s been ratified. Once we understand the definition of divorce now we see that Jesus is saying a spouse can separate from their spouse from any sexual immorality that they commit against them but they cannot remarry while their spouse is living. All of the early church believed you should divorce if your spouse is committing sexual immorality (adultery) but you cannot remarry until they die or reconcile with them. This teaching is in line with the word of God. Fornication means all sexual sins( incest, adultery, pre-marital sex, prostitution, etc). God bless sis!

      Whether it was adultry or fornication, unless the Lord spoke to Joseph, Mary would have been stoned, and so ending the covenant.
      Seems that the mercy showed to the women caught in adultry ended stoning, and by this, mercy, repentance, and forgiveness were now the new covenant practice. Remarriage was no longer the focus, but obeying the Lord is.

      @@tiletec1 I agree with your point but Joseph and Mary were espoused not married yet. Just as we see the difference in 1 Corinthians 7:25-28 concerning virgins or espoused. The reason why the view of saying fornication only means pre-martial sex doesn’t work because of Jeremiah 3:8. Israel committed fornication and adultery. Read the verse again. The Lord says Judah played the harlot(fornication) ALSO. Some other translations say she TOO meaning Israel as well was guilty of fornication.

    • @tiletec1
      @tiletec1 Před 10 měsíci

      I think you're saying that before the marriage ceremony and consummation, they could end the agreement if any sexual sin had come to light and still marry another? And if that is the case, they are not completely married, so it can't be considered adultry.

    • @PlaymakersInTheFaith
      @PlaymakersInTheFaith Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@tiletec1 yes in the espoused or engaged they are not married. It’s just like today two people can be engaged but have not taken vows or have gotten married yet. Once a couple is married they are bound until death. Now if one spouse commits sexual sin in the marriage the other spouse can divorce/separate but has to remain single or be reconciled to their spouse if their spouse repents.

    Completely wrong. Jesus did not say this, Erasmus added a greek word to change what Jesus said. Jesus actually abolished divorce. That’s why verse 10 the disciples said why get married if there’s no way out. Only death breaks the marriage vows.
