In this video we tackle the teardown on my #salvage #bmw #x3m by pulling out the engine and complete subframe including all the suspension too. Although we have a nasty surprise when pulling apart the oil filter finding a less than desirable amount of metal fragments.

Thanks everyone so much for watching, I'm going to need all your support throughout this build as it keeps getting more and more expensive the more we dig into it! Don't forget to use discount code 'chris' when using carVertical with the following link :)

@chris_slix if you want the turbos checked over please give me a shout be happy to help
@@littco how about we make them better? 😅
@@Chris_Slix if the rod bearings are done then they will at least need a good check over and probably new bearings so whilst they are apart would make sense to do something better on them.
Great start to the rebuild Chris very impressed how far you've got already!
That would be awesome ! @@Username.Login.Password
Careful working under that car with them quick jacks - get it on axle stands as alot safer for you and all concerned. Keep up the good work.. James.
I was thinking I wonder what weight the ramps are rated for
@@johnhutchinson635 pretty sure theyre rated for 2.5tons but its still brave to go under them with no stands
Yeah it gives me claustrophobia vibes with no axle stands! 😂
Quickjack ramps are safer than axle stands, there is no concern there
I thought the same thing, best having a secondary means of support.
Was looking forward to this one❤
We are all waiting for you next ferrari video 😅👀
Haha so true
@@Chris_Slix
You and mat in the same day, this is brilliant
I really think you should add some car stands under the car while it’s on the lift
Use real oem to get the correct part numbers for parts that you’re struggling with.
This should be the top comment!!!
I understand the difference between having a ramp and small jack like this one. So respect for taking this challenge
I’d also add when it comes to suspension arms look for lemforder items, they’re genuine and will again save you a fortune.
Lemforder or TRW. For F models the TRW parts had BMW logos dremmeled off.
@@TheJaoMing same with a lot of the lemforder stuff, you can just seen the grind marks 😂
I'm really enjoying the channel Chris. If you can get this project up and running then the sky is the limit. I like a challenge..... but I would be so out of my comfort zone doing a massive project like this. Your energy is infectious. Keep smiling.
Chris, this is exactly how you level up in the YT AUTO world. Goodluck! I'm sure everyone here is very excited about how you tackle this.
Morning Chris just wondering if you have used realoem bmw for some of the part numbers you can't identify, I've used it several times to get me of trouble, great videos looking forward to many more!!!!!!
Realoem will be your best friend! Clicking part numbers that you find on diagrams will bring up other variants with the same parts!
Absolutely brilliant video ,Showing the realist in a garage with knowledge you can achieve.
Not a small engine to remove so kudos to you. You will have a unit eventually Chris keep pushing forward ,Really enjoying the content and big up your Pal helping out
Brilliant video! Looking forward to the next one! Very entertaining project to follow considering I have no experience in this type of stuff, very interesting.
Your a brave man taking that on kid
Such refreshing content, Chris. Loving your approach.
Glad you enjoy it!
Ahhh Chris, I’m so happy you’re onto another project and that CZcams is proving to be successful. I look forward to all your videos and have the notifications on. Keep at it, you’re killing it!
Chris, well done..Great video. Best of luck in the new venture, its already clear its going to be promising for you and enjoyable for us as we join you on this journey. It was amazing to see the number of views increase by the 100s as I watched.
One way to find the part number if the part is broken is to call the dealer and get a price from them n then ask them for the parts number, ive done a number of times
Great to see you growing and doing more daring stuff. Good video Chris
You made the right decision going full time and taking a huge project…I can’t wait for the next vid!
great work brother....love your content!!
I been waiting for this finally 💪🏽
NEW SUBSCRIBER !
Definitely good content and certainly worth watching
Can’t wait to see this build bro, great effort so far.
Your channels gonna blow. Just give it a year or 2. Ur vids are top notch
Chris Slix uploads and Matt Armstrong uploads at the same time. Choices choices, but on a plus note, my evening sorted!! 😁😁
I gotta say Chris..Your Content and presentation is really good. This is a cracking Channel!
Great progress Chris, amazing the savings that can be made with parts on the used market, if you're prepared to spend time searching. Hooked on the rebuild!
Unreal video
Anyone that has the balls to take something like this on deserves likes and subscribes, looking forward to watching and supporting....good luck mate 👍
Great job. You'll soon be in a larger unit. Look forward to watching your uploads. You're always so upbeat
now you do this full time your channel is gonna fly... love your vids keep up good work
Love the new build Chris! 😊
Nice one Chris, you have certainly given yourself a challenge with this one, but the end result will be worth it. The X3M is a super fast SUV and I’m sure with the upgrades you’ll be looking to put on, it will be even faster. Looking forward to the next instalment 👍🇬🇧
21:48 just loved that look on your choc spaniels face 🤣🤣
Good luck and get it done!
You got some balls chris
great video, great content.....keep this up you are going to go far.
Fair play mate engine out in your garage is a big job. Respect lad 💪
Great video again Chris....loving the content m8
Chris please get some axle stands under that thing while it’s up on the quick jacks 👍🏼
Hey man, I’ve heard of those quick jacks failing. You should keep some jack stands under there as a fail safe just in case!
Great video. Please use jack stands - stay safe.
@@thepubesquad-uk2478 Agreed. I’d hate for them to fail. Those quick jacks can be nice. But I’ve seen videos about them failing.
Even if they fail, they have safety bars that lock into place
Hi Chris. Most of the metal in a modern engine isn’t magnetic. You could get the old oil analysed
Done alright there getting the engine out, looking forward to watching the strut towers chassis legs and inner wings swapped out.👌🏻
Just a note on the magnets... If the shavings in the oil are aluminum, which it is in most cases, the magnet isn't a good indication of the oil condition. The residue in the oil could just be from the oil cooler bits collecting in the oil filter or worst case scenario some bearing material.
Hoping it's nothing serious🤞
Looking forward to seeing the car up and running again 🔥
Make sure you add everything to your watch list while you think about it, you’ll usually get offers from the seller so you can save an extra few ££ if you do end up going for the part. Sometimes only 5% but often more
Amazing progress
Smashing It Mate Keep the Content Up Great Videos 🤙🏼
Love your work bud!
Cracking motors the x3m competition. Have you tried quarry motors bmw breaker up in Sheffield?
You can use real oem to cross reference part numbers. If you navigate to a part you can click in the link and it will list all the other BMW’s that part number was ever fitted to
You could maybe take the window out then do the dash cos it might make it easier to remove the dash etc? You got this Chris, you got the lemons so now go make the elite lemonade 😊
Love the videos! Keep it up m8
Chris
Loving it
Keep it up
Top video. I have an X3M40i. I know it’s not quite the same beast, but still interesting to see how they come apart.
100% better camera work,, keep this up. Thanks
Good work I think you sould put safe stand under the car for safety
Good work fella
Hooked on the build already, careful with them quick jacks mate! You’re braver than me! 👍🏼
I’m so glad you went full time. Loving the series so far and can’t wait for future videos. Keep up the great work. +1 subscriber
Good job Chris
You really do some excellent videos
Nice good job so far
I'm pretty sure Chris that you soon will be able to afford a little garage unit ...just like the one Matt Armstrong had first. Your gonna need to have a proper lift...Benji has one too
Good work lad!! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Easily the most difficult build you've attempted , looking forward to seeing the trials and tribulations you hit with this one , looking good so far Chris ....upping the game 😜
The dogs face cracked me up 😂
Hi Chris, keep up the great work.
Love the music you're using. Is it epidemic sound?
Love the videos and you’re definitely a brave man taking on such a project.
One thing I noticed was when you were checking the oil filter you were looking for magnetic material.
The outer coating on the crank bearings isn’t magnetic, so hopefully when you check it over later they are still in good shape.
Any wear on the bearings would be more obvious in the oil itself.
Fingers crossed all is good though.
exctly...and if you end the oil off for an analysis, they can spot problems, before they cause damage
I said this later in the video 😊 thanks though! Hopefully can get it sorted
@@Chris_Slix yeh, I missed that bit and have just watched it back.
How dare I doubt you mate 😂😁
It’s gonna be a beast once it’s done.
Nice video. Keep them up. I am hooked. Gr. from Amsterdam.
The presenting is great, so much better than shouty Matt Armstrong!
Hi Chris, mate your doing really well you have my support 24/7 great content love what ya doing…….keep it up 😊😊😊
Thanks so much
Honestly Chris keep up the good work! Really do love your videos and your passion for cars really does come across.
I just have one question, did someone actually hit the sun visor?! 🤣 I found myself watching that laughing and imagining what happened in slow motion
The UN on the steering rack is the part code 👍🏼
Good luck pal 👏
My dream car ! 😍👌🏼
Chris for your actuator give btn turbo or scm turbo a try. hopefully they could help you
Joining the journey with u ❤❤❤
This is exciting ❤
I believe as long as the steering rack is the same year and model all should be good just plug and play
try Bridgend BMW Breakers near Ashford in Kent. Plenty of bits to choose from there.
What a project 👌
Hi Chris, where can I get the magnets from?
Looking forward to the x3M build 😊 Good luck 🤞
Try the big bmw breakers on the a46
Poundland Matt Armstrong thumbnail
U have been waiting for this one
Great progress Chris
Epic respect ✊ 😎😎😎
The new power steering rack motor (EPS) would need coding and it may still not work and show fault since the outer motor gear that drives the steering rack's belt can differ in diameter and teeth number depending on the year of manufacturing. I made this mistake when repairing my f10 and had to change 3 EPS motors in a row since they were just different but looked the same, the power steering did not work and it did not calibrate through diagnostic soft. Good luck!
Going To Town!🔧
Just had to have a new turbo on my car (not a X3M, but same principal), found out that actuator on modern turbos alters the variable turbine geometry within the turbo rather than a waste gate in less modern turbos. If this is damaged it means a whole new or remanufactured turbo apparently, because they are calibrated for the actuator fitted at the time of manufacturing. If you just replaced this it wont run right and could cause engine damage.
realoem is your friend for finding part numbers
On the steering rack ask bmw what the part code is on their new product then go and search for it
looks like that steering rack is "returns accepted" so i would definitely try that. even if not you can always re-sell it.
For BM parts see if RealOEM can be of any use. I use it to help me out with my cars.
Right, next video!!!
can't lie every time i scroll your videos just reminds me of mat Armstrongs thumbnails lol
Hey Chris greetings from ny …. Are you going to get a new boooompah😂😂 love the content
Hi, Chris try Synetiq as well for parts
Any more information about the magnaplate kit?
