  • A couple of quick tips to improving your cursive handwriting -- which seems to be something almost everyone wants to do after they get their first fountain pen.
The pen I'm writing with is a Pilot Metropolitan with a Fine nib.
The writing style is something I derived from one commonly used in the age of dip pens -- when it was important, if not imperative, to be legible since it was your only option. I call it CJ Roundhand.
Here's a video I (finally) made about it:

    Dear CJ,
A few months ago, last year I came across this video and I was bedazzled by your penmanship. Starting then, five months ago I wrote in a diary in cursive for the first time in years. It was hard to write and hurt my hand writing this way. But as the months rolled by and I wrote in my cursive handwriting every night before bed it gradually started to improve. Slowly but surely I watched my handwriting evolve from what I first learned back in 3rd grade to what truly is my truest and prettiest handwriting which I can call my own.
It's slanted to the right, some letters curved and some dynamically moving through the lines of my paper, like a roller coaster I can now write fast and write good thanks to practice. I come back to this video and though I'm not as impressed with your penmanship and the magic is gone I can say that the lesson you taught me is still here, you have taught me the biggest lesson I ever needed to learn in life. That getting good at anything is as easy as getting started.
Now I have started learning other things like guitar, sketching and other things. I come into it knowing nothing and slowly get better as time goes by and I can't thank you enough for the advice that has made my penmanship, as well as my life so much more beautiful.

I was taught cursive in school and I quickly learned to love it a great deal more than printing. I now find myself being one of very few people who know how to write in cursive. I often get compliments from strangers about how beautiful it looks. But the truth is I have used cursive for so long that I can't write in print anymore. If I try it usually ends up barely legible. But I still love cursive and I enjoy sometimes just writing what ever comes to mind just to keep my practice up and my writing as well done as my teachers taught me many years ago. It's a shame that schools no longer teach cursive. But I guess with learning about computers becoming the most needed skill these days I can understand why.

I was only thought how to write in cursive. During high school I transitioned to print because exchanging notes was hard for literally everybody else who wasn't used to it and even some teachers had a hard time reading it. It's been about 15 years and I almost completely forgot cursive. It's in the past few weeks I'm trying to transition back, but I really have to slow down and pay attention to every letter.

but hey!! best wishes to all that want to learn cursive! for a lot of people it’s easier to use once you get the gist of it, and for some it’s not; either way, have fun with your handwriting!

My dad was born in 1918 in Indiana and my mother-in-law was born in 1924 in New York City. They both had beautiful handwriting that was quite similar in style. In those days students all took penmanship classes and learned from a standardized textbook that was used in many schools across the country. I always had my dad sign my report cards so everyone would know the signature wasn't forged. I'm working on my handwriting so I can continue the tradition. If only I could my son interested too.

I’ve always been pretty clueless and unobservant, but I remember it coming as a complete surprise when I realised at uni that most people don’t write in cursive. Maybe it’s because I was schooled in a mixture of French, English and Arabic schools, so my handwriting kept switching between spiky script to loopy cursive.
Then 3h-long exams became a thing and I quickly discovered that writing cursive was MUCH quicker, so I deliberately made myself change the overall ‘look’ of my writing with my teachers’ comfort in mind, such as making loops short and round rather than long or spiky.
I even developed my own shorthand and code during lectures to get more on the page faster. This caused quite a bit of frustration from classmates who asked for my notes and couldn’t easily read them, but almost everyone who sees my writing compliments it regardless of legibility!
To this day, I don’t really know why, because I never put much effort into neatness and as far as I’m concerned it’s irregular, spiky and difficult to read. But apparently it looks piratey, so I’ll take it!

Up 'till now I've been writing with finger movement (I believe from ballpoint pen bad habits), and really struggled with your capital letters and making those beautiful curves. Switching to whole hand movement I can instantly see an improvement on my curves and slant angle. So we learn. :-)

It is easy, you just need to get used on it, you need to write with your hand above your letters :)

In the years since, I still tweak the letters. Also, whenever I find I'm getting sloppy or too casual about it, maybe once a month or so, I'll sit down and slowly, with focus, write a practice page of text. So the caps are based as much on various calligraphic hand as they are on the cursive styles of Roundhand.

Cursive handwriting is so impractical for taking down notes. It's beautiful, but it hurts your hand, and it's slow too.

Have you ever tried the Palmer Method, or buisiness writing? It's built for speed, it takes a while to learn, but in the end, it's worth it.

Hans Landa Read a book recently. I've changed my mind. Cursive is fast. Not sure if I have the patience to train myself writing cursive.

I love cursive. It’s sad that we’ve almost completely gotten away from this style of writing. Thankful for your video instruction.

Just the other day, a teacher at school looked at my notebook and saw my handwriting. She said "Oh, wow! What a good cursive hand you have! It really look like a handwritten 19th century book." I was quite surprised, to say the least. Personally, I think my handwriting can get a lot better (especially my cyrillic hand writing. I writing with latin letters mot of the time) but, still, it was nice to get that positive feedback.*My advice:* Try to write as much as possible by hand (and not on a computer). Practise makes perfect and, the more you write, the more practise you get. Fortunately, I'm a student...

I remember writting somewhat cursive since first grade. Not actually cursive. Like writting "e" and "a" together, etc. Then slowly as I'm in 6th grade, my hand writting got more cursive kind. That helped me to be the fastest writer in class. Although I think I always wrote fast so my hand writting became cursive
. I didn't make time for myself to learn cursive. But I just learnt one letter at a time, once I've mastered it, I learnt another. It was fun when I wrote extremely fast and in a slanted style so other couldn't copy my notes.
But now I want learn cursive!! Because I think that kinda hand writting actually describes me. Writting fast and aesthetically is one of the things about me. I was here for inspiration. Thanks!!

Guys it's easy! So I wanted to practice mine but my cursive was really sloppy and I even forgotten how some letters were written but I just wrote a lot everyday (random song lyrics, names, the alphabet) and i could tell it definitely improved. All I did was practice and practice, it's all about patience guys 😉

I watched this years ago and actually practiced. This popped on my recommended and I'm happy to say that my handwriting resembles the video somewhat now. (I use the Pilot Precise v5 pen) It took maybe a solid year of practice.

Same here, although I feel mine is a bit better, but I write like crazy and don't mind going slower so it shows off more in the end. But it's crazy to go back and realize I already made what I thought would be impossible.

I find cursive so elegant and I love it, but during my journey in school I ended up modifying it so much that it’s not cursive anymore. I could easily go back, but now I find it “too noisy” to use it to study...In my free time I like to write letters and I want to use my cursive for that💜
