    Appreciating both MJ and LeBron seems to be impossible nowadays. Jordan in MY OPINION is still the greatest to touch a basketball. But that doesn't stop me from being a fan of LeBron. Just appreciate what LeBron is doing and respect and acknowledge what MJ did in the past. Don't spread factually invalid arguments that are rooted in emotion.

      Maybe not. I start to watch NBA in 1994, so maybe the Jordan than I watch wasn't the best Jordan, but he was enough good to win 3 rings after he came back.
      LeBron is a really good player, the best than I can watch after Jordan (he is better than Kobe for sure), but Jordan played against so many good players, without a all star center and still dominate.
      Let's be honest, the centers dominated the NBA since the beginning. If you look at all the MVP, there are many more centers than other positions. Jordan played against David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon and Alonso Mourning, and power forwards like Dennis Rodman, Karl Malone, Shaw Kemp and Charles Barkley. That was just amazing.
      LeBron played against many good players too, like Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Dirk Nowitsky, etc. but the 90 was harder. I'm glad to watch those amazing careers, and LeBron is the only one who actually we can compare with Jordan. He isn't better, but be in this conversation is enough.

      Philipp Ghadiri I lag every time when people say the name Rodman. Because... Who is Rodman? He never charge a team. He was a role player, a good one, but a role player. Without the right team, he was nobody. In San Antonio and Lakers he do nothing. The real all star was Pippen. Compare that with Orlando, with Grant, Penny and Shaq. Young Shaq and young healthy Penny. Or Seattle with young Gary Payton, young Shaw Kemp. Maybe the only two old all star was Stockton and Malone, but they were really good with that age, and the rest of the team was young enough to make a good fight.

    Magic Johnson wasn't at the tail end of his career. Yes, in retrospect he was. But taking AIDS out of it, he was 2nd in MVP in '91 and was still just 31-years-old (birthdayAugust 14, 1959) when they lost to the BULLS in the FINALS. Magic was still in his prime. Worthy, Scott, Perkins, and A.C. Green were all in their primes (all under 30), and replacing an old Kareem with a very young Vlade Divac and Elden Campbell is pretty good all things considered.

    MJ was the first out of only three players to ever record 200+ steals with 100+ blocks in a season, and the only one to do so twice (in a row for good measure), earning him the DPOY. He reached the 200 mark for steals six times in his career, peaking at 259 stls plus 131 blks in '88. LeBron's peak is 177 stls in '05 & 93 blks in '09.
    Three-pointers is the only category that's higher in today's era compared to the 80s. Field goal percentage, offensive rebounds (all-time low at single digits per game in 2018), assists, steals, blocks, etc... are all down. Back in the late 20th century; annual assists leaders typically reached the 900+ total mark (Stockton peaked at 1164), steals leaders with 200+ (A. Robertson at 301), and blocks leaders with 300+ (Eaton at 456). In the post-2000 era; such marks were only reached twice, thrice, and once (85 games played by Ratliff) respectively; all before the 2010s except for assists in 2017. Draymond led the league with 2.03 spg that same year and A. Davis with 2.57 bpg the following season, both all-time lows. The 1984 draft alone provided a yearly race for the steals title between MJ, Stockton (all-time steals leader), and A. Robertson (all-time spg leader); plus Hakeem as the only center to record 200+ steals. Guards won the DPOY five times in the 80s, once in the 90s, and zero so far in the new millennium.

    Jordan was a better rebounder than LeBron. In this era, those that run point get a ton of defensive boards. See Westbrook as a great example. But to further base my statement, look at offensive rebounds. 1.56 ORB career, 1.66 ORB with Chicago, including 1.59 in 97-98. LeBron is 1.21 ORB per game career, last season just 1.18 despite having tied a career high with 8.6 Total RBG. When needed, Jordan was incredible at boxing out, where as LeBron never even tries. Lastly, Jordan was a 6-6 shooting guard, which in his later years was more of a mid range shooter than a driver going for dunks, and played in an era where big men dominating the paint and hard contact was common place and not considered a foul. Despite that he still grabbed more boards in the offensive end than LeBron, who is a 6-8 athletic monster that has played SF and PF.

    When someone says "Jordan isn't as good as Lebron at rebounding", its just a fact. Its not that they are saying that Jordan SHOULD have the same rebounding numbers as Lebron, they are simply stating that since Lebron gets more rebounds, that adds to Lebron's VALUE. Jordan is shorter and played a different position, so he SHOULDN'T be getting more rebounds than Lebron. That is beside the point of the fact that if you are a player that can get more rebounds for your team, no matter if its because of your height or whatever the case is, that player is adding VALUE. Therefore it would completely reasonable to use rebounding as part of an argument in comparing two players to each other in terms of who was more VALUABLE.
    By the way, in the year that Jordan averaged 32/8/8, the Bulls' record was actually worse than the year before when they had Sam Vincent playing point guard for 30 games or so averaging 8 assists instead of Jordan. So Jordan playing in that role did not improve their team.

    • @mskidi
      @mskidi Před 3 lety

      Another fact that is all of Kevin Love, Chris Bosh, Anthony Davis, Tristan Thompson seem to become worse rebounders when playing besides Lebron when Rodman, Horace Grant and CO seemed to be doing just as good as they always used to with Jordan, which probably means that the latter didnt feel like stealing his teamates' bread was necessary to pad his stats. He probably felt it was more important chasing his man in the perimeter instead of shagging off on defense to get uncontested rebounds.
      This is probably proven by the fact that Jordan has more offensive rebounds per game and actually knew had to box out.
      Furthermore, Jordan averaged close to 12 assists per game in the 1991 Finals and beat the Lakers 4-1 when Lebrons' double digit assists in the Finals usually come in series he gets swept.

    Biggest lies could have been :
    * Jordan never choked once...
    * Jordan lost to the Orlando Magic because he was rusty (forgetting about the lost of H. Grant & Jordan's first round performance versus Charlotte). But, he played poorly.
    * The league never protected Jordan (many rules changes when he was playing).
    * Jordan took all the game winners.

      If you're talking about Orlando.
      It was the TOs that killed the Bulls (24 committed by MJ in just 6 game) and most of them happened in the forth quarter & in key moments.
      Also, his shooting dipped in the forth [in the series, he shot 47.7% which was incredible].
      I was talking about the Seattle series where Jordan was shooting terribly and even scored 0 points in the forth quarter on elimination game [before the game was of out reach, Jordan went scoreless for 13 minutes]. Sadly for Chicago (I was a Seattle fan), Pippen, Kukoc and Rodman took the leads. The game winner taken by Toni happened after Rodman grabbed an incredible offensive rebound and dished him the ball...
      Jordan had the pass, because he was MJ. But, he also had those moments versus Detroit back in the 1980s. If it didn't happened, Chicago would had won that series.
      BTW, I am not saying Jordan sucked. I am just stating that people are saying that Jordan never struggled [people used the term choke nowadays]. People are critizing for the smallest détail.
      Sorry, if it ain't clear. I am not an English speaking person.

    True, the Pistons weren't old but I don't think they were the same team either. The change in the Flagrant Foul Rule (1991) and internal turmoil hit the Pistons hard. Swept by the Bulls in 1991 (won in 7 the year before). Lost in the first round in 1992. And didn't even make the Playoffs in 1993. I'm sure 1991 was finally the Bulls year regardless, but it just wasn't the same Bad Boys...

A better question is when did Jordan beat anyone as good the Spurs or the Warriors?!? Jordan had a tougher road to the Finals but Lebron has had it much tougher in the Finals. Jordan was Favored in 32 Finals games and Won 24 Finals games. Lebron has been favored in 14 Finals games and Won 18 games in the Finals... *Jordan > Lebron but not because of Finals records* smh You could use Playoff win% if you want sense that would include Jordan's more difficult road to Finals, along with his easier Finals.

Then ppl act like Jordan was just this scorer that averaged like 2 assist a game when Jordan in fact had a 8 reb 8 asst season way before Lebron ever did. He also averaged 11.4 asst in his first nba finals. When he settled into the triangle offense with Phil Jackson his assist started to decline due to the fact the triangle offense doesn’t rely on one primary playmaker. Lebron is great probably top 3 all time but these kids really starting to disrespect MJ

  • @oneman9121
    @oneman9121 Před 5 lety +4

    Love both MJ & Lebron, but in all honesty, Lebron has played in the tougher defensive era. Let me explain in two words: FREE ZONES. As you all know, 'Isolation' basketball was pretty prevalent during the 90's. Why is that? It's because you can't leave your man, unless you're doing what's called a 'hard double'. The minute you wander into that area between your man and the ball-handler, you get whistled for an 'illegal defense' and a free throw. The Utah Jazz during the late 90's took advantage of this against the Los Angeles Lakers by putting Greg Ostertag in the corner so that Shaq would have to go out to the perimeter to guard him, which eliminated Shaq from protecting the rim against the Stockton/Malone pick'n roll. If they tried that today, Shaq would be able shift down without being whistled for an illegal defense.
    I'm not saying Jordan didn't face tough defenses, but for any person that's ever played organized basketball, they would know that FREE ZONES>>>>>HAND-CHECK. Isolation scorers LOVE the 90's rules (see Kobe Bryant quote), because they get to play 1-on-1. It's not a coincidence why isolation scorers are slowly starting to die out. It's because of the free zones.
    In conclusion, the 90's had tougher INDIVIDUAL man-to-man defense, but in today's game, TEAM DEFENSE is what matters. And TEAM DEFENSE>>>>>>INDIVIDUAL DEFENSE.

    • @oneman9121
      @oneman9121 Před 5 lety

      Go out to the playground, and tell the opposing team they have to play man-to-man defense. You can't shade, you can't leave within 3-4 feet of your man, you can't slide down to help in the post unless you're doing a 'hard double team'. People will laugh at you. It's the same exact analogy with the 90's rules vs. today.

Most of those players were in the Western Conference which means he only saw them twice a year and never in the playoffs unless it was the Finals. The players on the East were on the same teams (Mocrief/Robertson, Dumars/Rodman). Take a guess at how many of these players are under 6' 4". Meanwhile in Lebron's NBA career you had the likes of Metta, Paul George, Jimmy Butler, Luol Deng, Jaylen Brown, Giannis Antetokounmpo and that's just the East. I didn't mention Draymond, Kawhi, Kobe, Durant, etc... because they are out West.

    Dennis Rodman saved him in 1996 finals you can’t argue that on optics. His impact on that series is way more valuable considering on the weak performance MJ had vs Dennis’ defensive presence on Kemp. Rodman was brilliant down the stretch in whatever critical scheme they needed. Jordan wasn’t deserving of MVP for that finals but all others most certainly.

      karmacigar Paxson and Kerr were role players, MJ set up Kerr by design in 97 and Paxson hit the only shot in the 4th quarter of the 1993 game 6 for the team, the rest of the points in the 4th quarter were all made by Jordan, who carried that team while no one else could score that whole quarter until Paxson finally made one in a key moment. Again a designed play though. Jordan carried all those scrub Bulls team, even in the 96 series when he was hobbling and barely able to play. If the Bulls played the Warriors today, it would at least be a series, they would not get repeatedly swept as Lebrons Cavs did. Im not saying they would definitely win, actually yes I am, I remember how lockdown perimeter defenders they were.

    • @janethenry518
      @janethenry518 Před 5 lety

      karmacigar Yes he did, Lebron was the most important piece of those championship teams, albeit superteams, ... Im just saying that its not quite on the level of what Jordan or Olajuwon did, being the lone superstars on their teams, on two of Jordans championships he was the only All Star , and the times when Pippen was an All Star he was basically half an All Star, Ok Ill give you two thirds an All Star if being generous.... What Wilt Chamberlain did in taking the stacked 60s Celtics to 6 or 7 games in the Finals makes him higher on my list than Lebron by quite a large margin, it would be like if Lebron was able to take the GS Warriors to seven games nearly by himself, thats what Wilt did in the 60s. Wilt was playing one on five, kind of like when Michael played one on five against the stacked 80s Celtics who had five hall of famers, took that superteam into overtime nearly by himself. People try to use that against Michael but it actually enhances his legacy, what he was able to do with a bunch of scrubs in the 80s . Pippen didnt come until 87 and wasnt an all star til the 90s.

    One thing I will add is that Michael Jordan was mainly guarded by Dennis Johnson in the 1986 playoffs when he scored 49 and 63 points. Dennis Johnson was a 9 time All Defensive team selection.
    The other thing is that the Bulls never faced the Celtics after 1987 because the Celtics couldn't get past the Pistons.

I wouldn't say perfect amount of help either. In 2 Finals Jordan's #2 and #3 couldn't even average more than 15 ppg and then there was another Finals where only Jordan and Pippen averaged double figures while everyone else averaged under 9 ppg. As it pertains to competition the league was competitive especially with more teams added, don't believe the myth about expansion teams watering down the league. All in all, Jordan is the GOAT nothing was handed to him he actually had to go out there and get it.

    About the scoring. Some stats what the hand checking rule did to scoring:
    Kobe Bryant 43.3% --> 45.0% FG% |||| 10.1 --> 10.2 FTA |||| 27.6 --> 35.4 PPG
    Allen Iverson .424% --> .447 FG% |||| 10.5 --> 11.5 FTA |||| 30.7 --> 33.0 PPG
    Lebron James .472% --> .480 FG% |||| 8.0 --> 10.3 FTA |||| 27.2 --> 31.4 PPG
    Gilbert Arenas .431% --> .447% FG% |||| 8.0 --> 10.0 FTA ||||25.5 --> 29.3 PPG
    Dwayne Wade .478% --> .495% FG% |||| 9.9 --> 10.7 FTA |||| 24.1 --> 27.2 PPG
    Paul Pierce .455% --> .471% FG% |||| 8.1 --> 10.3 FTA |||| 21.6 --> 26.8 PPG
    Dirk Nowitzki .459% --> .480% FG% |||| 9.1 --> 7.4 FTA |||| 26.1 --> 26.6 PPG
    Carmelo Anthony .431% --> .481% FG% |||| 7.6 --> 8.9 FTA |||| 20.8 --> 26.5 PPG
    Michael Redd .441% --> .450% FG% |||| 5.8 --> 7.1 FTA |||| 23.0 --> 25.4 PPG
    Ray Allen .428% --> .454% FG% |||| 5.5 --> 4.6 FTA |||| 23.9 --> 25.1 PPG
    So you can either remove 4 points from LBJs ppg average to see his performance in MJs hand checking era or add 4-5 points to MJs averages to get a perspective on his scoring potential in today's league. With LBJs body and no Dennis Rodman giving him the elbow crossbar on his chest, I find LBJs scoring not as impressive tbh. He is a good allrounder like Bird or Magic though.
