  • Anime has inspired so many different types of media movies, tv shows like stranger things, cartoons like avatar the last air bender, music like Kanye west’s stronger music video, video games, like elden ring or genshin impact, etc so i decided to create this series deep diving into different examples of how anime influenced different types of media start with movies Which will give you both examples of really cool examples of influence and in the case of Satoshi Kons work Ones that might make you question the line between influence and plagiarism Hope you like it smooches love you

      My early 20's were changed a lot by Ghost in The Shell, Evangelion, and oddly enough, 2001, a Space Oddysey.
      Stanley Kubrick would have proudly admitted his inspirations and gave them credit, even in the 1960's. These directors behavior is disgusting and shameful, and this is coming from an American. Paprika and Perfect Blue are amazing films. I have to give some credit to the Wachowzki twins for crediting GITS.. but did any of you hear about that when The Matrix was out? I sure didn't. American / European directors are showing major disrespect to Japanese history, and it's going to end up biting them in the butt one day when everyone realizes how racist and thievish it is.

    for both Requiem and Black Swan, with that much in common, a mention during the opening credits would be the minimum I'd think, like "Inspired by Satoshi Kon's 'Perfect Blue'" just smack in the middle of the credits, early and huge so it can't be missed like a director interview can.

    With Requiem for a Dream, Aronofsky did buy the Americam filming rights to Perfect Blue specifically to film that bathtub scene, which shows that he was acknowledging the inspiration and sought out legal permission to adapt it into his own story. Personally, I have more of an issue with Black Swan, since he refuses to admit that it was heavily influenced by Perfect Blue, despite the obvious and numerous comparisons that you made.

    • @InternetPitstop
      @InternetPitstop  Před 2 lety +134

      See I read that too but I also found counter evidence that says it’s a myth that he tried to buy it but that it wasn’t granted so he never owned the rights to perfect blue and that’s ridiculous black swan is most definitely influenced by perfect blue that’s just a lie for him to say otherwise

    Like with these directors and anime, George Lucas was heavily inspired and took a lot of inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s filmography and owes a lot of his success to him. But Kurosawa fell on harder times and couldn’t finance his film in his later years, he and Spielberg swooped in to help him out. It’s the mutual respect is what’s needed when stealing influences.

    While there’s clearly a power imbalance with a director who has plenty of money and acclaim, I don’t think an artist should ever 1/1 steal framing, or a shot, etc. Lifting influence and “stealing” from art works when you make it yours, adapting something like the neck jack stuff from Ghost in the Shell into the Matrix. It’s not ripping scenes, just taking concepts, and aesthetics.

    I think ultimately it comes down to how much a tribute in one film retroactively causes people who's seen it seek out the source of influence. The Matrix is the best example as because the Wachowski's never hid their influence and they all but promoted their love of anime with the matrix and animatrix, people discovered stuff like Ghost in the Shell from seeing it.
    Aronofsky may or may not say he was a Satoshi kon fan but there is almost no proof in the connection until people found it years later and so no one sought out Kon's work through Aronofsky's. My same issue with Nolan but worse because the guy constantly gets called out for taking influence and he never admits it and it makes it hard to enjoy his filmmaking when he acts like he's so wholly original.

    I think, lifting it shot for shot is always a bit gauche, cause in this case you don't actually do work. It feels similar to covers in music.
    Let's say you make a cover on an album, you usually have to fork over some money for the rights. If we view the movie as an "album", then that scene is the "cover".
    Ultimately, it's a pretty shady area and it sucks that the greatest artists are often tossed to the side like this. I just hope Kon was happy, in the end.

    1) Poor guy enters a (dangerous) gambling game to win a lot of money.
    2) rich people enjoy watching the poor contestants and their suffering
    3)there is a cross the bridge death game
    4) the person funding the games is a rich old sadistic man

      Sure that is influence but that is also some really broad traits that seperately exist in a ton of different media and there is a ton of room for exploration.
      You can argue the Hunger Games and most teen dystopian fiction have something like this even. Poor people enter a dangerous game or challenge to get resources for their people, rich people sponsor and spectate said games, often times the people at the top of the hierarchy are old people who initially set up the system for their own benefit.
      Again I am not saying that Squid game did not take inspiration from Kaijjij, just that there is a lot of different ways to tell a story with those premises.

    About ripping off scenes... well Tarantino made a career with cleverly reusing them and certain imagery. In the case of the Satoshi Kon ones with Nolan and Aronofsky is that it can serve as a sort of advertising, because i started to watch his movies after i found out that certain scenes were used in those high level hollywood productions.

    Thanks for making me watch, and love Ghost in the shell after sleeping on it for so long. Also, you maybe my newest favourite channel because it takes a lot of balls for a man to say "fuck it, I'll make my own adult swim" (after watching the PTV episode of family guy, Id imagine)

    Ghost In The Shell and Evangelion changed my life forever. Changed the way I view technology, and people. That is a powerful medium.
    This is going to sound really corny, but I swear it's true. Watching End Of Evangelion gave me strong reminders of what I saw on my first LSD trip years earlier.. and that being, a globe connected by spiritual energy. Beautiful.

      Also, that director should be ashamed of himself for not giving credit to the creator of Perfect Blue and Paprika.
      I never watched Black Swan, or Inception, but I've watched both of those anime films, and even when I saw the trailers, I remember thinking "How cool! They're going to pay homage in an American film!" - No. He deserves to be shamed for that, hard. I have a feeling in time, it will be seen as a form of racism.

    I loved this!!! I also wanted to discuss: I'm pretty sure Tokyo Godfathers is a retelling of John Ford's Three Godfathers from 1948 starring John Wayne. I understand the perspective: I wouldn't want someone imitating my work without credit, or remaking it and getting all the credit (I would lose my mind); I just found it fascinating that Kon felt this way when he was inspired by Three Godfathers to make his own film. Just a thought i had while watching this. I do understand him, though--if I went to the theater to see a new movie and it was basically a mask of something I had made--and with no credit--I would be livid!
    Great video! I only found your channel today and I am HOOKED

      @akhileshpindiga Před rokem

      Wait! But in Satoshi kon's case, he did say that Tokyo god fathers movie is influenced by three Godfathers. Japanese creators actually give credits to the original if there is any influence behind their works .

    I didn't know about half these movies, thanks for the informative video! I agree with your last point, I don't find it fair either to just replicate a scene frame for frame, especially considering the power imbalance there is and the likeliness that you'll get away with it anyway since the original content isn't well known in the west. They should at least do the same as done in the music industry, and give a writing credit and royalties to the original director.

    Speaking on influences, you remind me so much of NakeyJakey in the best way. I'm sure I'm not the first person to say that, but I think you have a different niche and a style that makes you unique enough that calling you a clone or copycat feels downright wrong.

    To me i remember Jin roh the wolf brigade. There was first a novel/manga the panzer cop and then came the movie red spectacles and then came the animes most criminally underrated movie Jin roh the wolf warrior and then came the korian live action adaptation of anime which was not that bad considering how badly other adaptations failed. But Jin roh man that was a very well made anime the animation even to this day is excellent probably still the best out there and the politics that revolve around the story is based on Japan's own history even tho it was told in a different context and scenario. Highly recommend people to watch this masterpiece (ik this word gets thrown around a lot but this time it's legit you will get it when you watch the anime).

    AYO my fav youtuber is back! Now back to the topic of the video: It's truly sad to see bigger names in the industry just take someone's work and have it as their own. Like black swan as you mentioned. On the other hand it's really really cool when the West pays homage to the original works of the East or when it takes inspiration from them such as the matrix and inception. And here's the core point of this debate: both these movies SAY where they got their inspiration/influence from. To me it's all about the respect and shout outs. "Oh you like my new movie? Go check out X movies where mine takes influence from, you'll probably love them as much as I do". It's not that hard and it's a pretty neat thing to be able to - on your own - realize some scenes or aspects of one movie that have direct influences from another. PS: yea I always stick to the very end of each video it's cool and I also enjoy seeing at what time you uploaded it (at leat I think thats what the time stamps at the end mean). Much love man, keep it up

    100% agree, influence and borrowing things from other creators is all about execution. If it's too close to the original to the point it may as well be a remake or reinterpretation, then it's not really "your own thing". I've been putting off watching Paprika for a while, I'll be watching that soon so thanks for putting that segment in there!
