Storytelling In Video Games

  • Video Game storytelling and narrative has progressed immensely, games nowadays can rival movies with their cutscenes, characters, plots, cinematics. Games like Witcher 3, God of War Ragnarock, Last Of Us, Red Dead Redemption 2 are masterpieces of narrative in games. Though, at times it feels that game award, critics, fans tend to only focus on these games style of storytelling and see it as the only way for a video game to tell a narrative. This came to my attention when I noticed Elden Ring was getting criticism and hate for getting the best narrative nomination. Which doesn't make sense Elden Ring and dark souls and all the Fromsoft games have great narrative they just approach storytelling differently. So today I wanted to give some examples as to how video games can tell stories in unique ways. and hopefully by spotlighting these methods and techniques I can show that there's more to video game storytelling than just trying to be like a movie in its approach. We should Praise Both these styles of storytelling in gaming because they both have a place.

    To be fair to the original trilogy, literally everything that is celebrated about Kratos' character in the new games was first established in the original trilogy.
    In some cases with even better execution imo.
    Kratos hugging his family to restore their HP while he is protecting them from himself at the end of the first GoW oddly enough is a perfect example of game mechanics being married to story telling.

    Something that Elden Ring does that I love is how the checkpoints can tell a story.
    In Ray Lucaria, there are no stakes of Marika checkpoints, unlike every area up until that point. The player can also learn about how Marika stole the academy’s masters husband, so naturally she got rid of all portrayals of Marika
    In Crumbling Farum Azula, there are also no stakes of Marika. However this establishes a timeline, showing about how the area is not only older than Marika herself, but also establishes that nobody has made it to Farum Azula in a long long time.
    Just a cool detail

      Except for the claim that storytelling in games keep improving. It is not, many of the best written games are 10-20 years old at this point. Baldurs Gate 1-2, Fallout 1-2, New Vegas, Planescape Torment, Dragon Age Origins, and the first Mass Effect games. All of these have better writing than any modern game, because good writers don't get employed anymore.

      @@aurumvale9908 Probably that they looked blue lol. Although, if blue is a recurring theme with symbolism (like the use of yellow or Green in Breaking Bad), you could maybe read into it a bit as a clue. Either way, a true teacher doesn't impose their view, they ask you to justify your own. If you can make a compelling case for what blue curtains mean, or don't mean, you get an A from me. Who cares what I think? I'm just a guy they pay to try to get you interested in books.

    • @mcgoldenblade4765
      @mcgoldenblade4765 Před rokem +23

      @@aurumvale9908 I'm not an English teacher, but a very common rule in writing is the Law of Conservation of Detail. That is something should only be mentioned if it has relevance to the story. If there is no reason for the curtains to be blue, then most likely the author wouldn't have pointed it out. If a detail is written in and it doesn't add anything of substance to the story, then that's usually considered bad writing.
      So the curtains being blue doesn't necessarily need to meen the character is depressed specifically, but it does have to mean SOMETHING. Or else there's no point to describing the color of the curtains if it doesn't mean anything.

    As a writer I've always been so jealous of video games for being able to use environmental storytelling. Like, take a look at Deus Ex: Human Revolution: the first time you enter Jensen's apartment, this beautiful, soft, melancholic piano song starts playing ('Home' by Michael McCann) and you can see objects you can interact with, see the way this character had lived before the events of the game took place. It makes the game feel so much more fleshed out and realistic in a way that would be such a labour when it comes to only written storytelling. But you, as the player, have the option of engaging with that story or not - you could just loot the apartment and leave without ever reading the emails that paint a picture of Jensen's tormented psyche, without paying attention to the clutter, etc.
    Also as a writer, the curtains are blue because I was writing and looked my desk and had a blue mug and was like "sure, that works," but the meaning other people find in that blue curtain is out of my hands, which is how it should be. The concept of "Death of the Author" exists for a reason and when people bring their own experiences to a work and find their own meaning from it... that feels amazing (and then you lie and say all that meaning was totally intentional). The "insignificant details" you put in can mean the world to someone else.
    Anyway, these are amazing videos and I love watching them, you're doing a great job with them (you absolute nerd) ♥
    That "Brother my Brother" clip was rude though, lmao.
    E: Also also my favourite video game story is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, the game is janky as hell but the atmosphere the game builds is off the charts, I wrote like three essays about it in university because I'm an absolute chad.

      Then you play the game a bit more and realise NONE of the mirrors in the game work, because displaying an accurate mirror in a game was pretty difficult back then and the devs didn't want to do it.

I beated DS1 recently before DS3 so it was fresh in my mind, and then I started thinking about the battle arena, all of the swords and spears in the ground representing all the times that the fire was rekindled, Soul of Cinder embodying all players and Gwyn, trying with their life to keep the flame alive and this world suffering because of that, it made my decision clear: I let the fire fade.
    The Firekeeper's final words, the Epilogue theme, the Dark Souls 3 logo representing the end of a saga I was just recently introduced and love, and those thoughts that made me think about ending cycles, letting go and hoping for tiny little sparks of hope in the future hit me and I broke in tears.

    I'll always love Reach for prob bein the first game I started becomin more aware of this stuff. It's simple but just playin that final mission where ur only objective is to "Survive" thinkin "hey I jus gotta last long enough to get picked up, easy enough". Only for it to take more time than to comfortably acknowledge for that to happen all the while the waves become stronger & more plentiful. Soon u start reachin a limit & once ur health goes low enough the screen begins to crack jus as the initial perception u had in the beginnin of the mission as a depressed kid(wit a cripplin fear of death) still a good bit away from hittin double digits does jus the same. The reaction isn't visibly huge but on the inside as the screen continues to crack under the onslaught & overbearin pressure of the foe cavin in & finally reaches its breakin point smoothly switchin to the final cutscene as the Spartan that for all intent & purposes(even more so than the Master Chief in the OG trilogy) is supposed to be U struggles seemingly futilely till the end & finally as the final blow is bout to be made the camera cuts to the helmet in which u've viewed nearly this entire event up to now with the dreary, lonesome almost nightmarish Orchestral music hits its final note the screen fades to black, in the blank moment of nothin before the next scene plays for the end of the game u feel nothin but some type of... almost "emptiness"(!?) that is too complicated to even describe semi-accurately. Needless to say Reach affected my mental health a lot as a kid & I'd say it was a type of therapy for me & it'll always be my fav even jus for that.
    Funnily enough the Sonic Franchise does this A LOT even in the classic games like CD(My fav Classic game). Since Sonic games always had two endings(good/bad)for collectin the chaos emeralds & had a ctrong message of environmentalism CD merged the two more directly & made them a more prominent part of the game as a whole so when usin the new time travel mechanic u get to see eggmans effect on little planet(LP) & if u don't do at least 1 of the two required things while playin the game u get the bad endin despite beatin eggman at the end of the game & LP is forever his. SA2 also has a good bit of gameplay specific stuff that helps the story/lore & even connects back to SA1. I could go on but there's a lot lol. Sry for the overly long comment. This was a great pitstop once again 😁
    edit: I COMPLETELY FORGOT TO MENTION THAT NIER IS OBV A MONUMENTAL EXAMPLE OF ALL THIS LOL

    Personally one of the best storytelling sparks I've seen was playing Hollow Knight. During the final boss fight against this entity that strangely resembles you. You see some flash of lucidity in the creature you're fighting, during which it stabs itself, helping you killing it. This was way more memorable than any dialogues or cutscene could have put this fight into such a dramatic sequence of action. Really loves this game, dig around so many details about the history of this weird world. Add on top of that the melancholic OST and you got yourself one of the best games of all time.

    I literally finished watching many gameplays of GoW: Ragnarok and it hit me right in the feels every time because of the impactful storytelling and Kratos's character development. I then remember how some games tell a story not through cutscenes but through little pieces of dialogue from an NPC's respective item, where they tell us a bit of their backstory or their achievements like Elden Ring. When I reached Leyndell in Elden ring, it completely caught me off guard. Seeing the city in ruins started to give me questions like, "What happened here? Who did this, Why has this place ended in such a sad state? " accompanied by melancholic music. It really makes you wanna find out what actually transpired before you arrived here. Hell games like FNAF manages to create its own story through hidden easter eggs/minigames and convoluted messages that are up to the player to deduce and connect the puzzle pieces together. Then when you understand all the lore behind FNAF 1-3, then you can understand why FNAF 3's true ending music starts to truly make sense. The piano signifies that the children are finally free from the hellish nightmare and can rest their souls. Games that can convey feelings and emotions through items, music and etc is truly what fascinates me. I honestly needed a video to emphasize different ways of deep narratives. This video is perfect for just that. Thank you for reading this and I really hope you release more videos like this.

Yes, there’s a hella of a lot cut scenes (which I like in this game) but the way nature guides you, how you interact with it, how you can become a freaking haiku poet yourself, THATS COOL AS HELL. Following a little fox to a dope shrine was the highlight of the day until I then find a storyteller who guides me to paintings of a mountain covered in blue flowers which I use to find a location and have a dope boss battle. Final Fantasy VII does this in the nibelhiem flashback to show how much stronger Sephiroth was than others by making him kill a dragon that kills cloud in one hit, only to follow up and hit the dragon for 3000 damage far more than what your able to do at this point. We can also see Sephiroth uses the strongest versions of all elemental spells, examining his equipment we can all Materia maxed out and his level is that of 50 it shows the player how strong he really is.
    Another Great example is that of Enslaved Odyssey to the West a game about both of the party members having to learn to trust each other and how overcoming obstacles together and learning to trust each other and use ones strengths to compensate for the other characters weakness we can see a bond, a trust develop between both characters.

    Keep up the great videos, man. i love nerding out about mechanical storytelling in games and hearing about the clever systems in games ive never played.
    The World Ends With You has some of the best storytelling through mechanics that ive ever seen in a video game. The og version came out on the ds in 2007 and featured cool urban culture influenced mechanics such as your characters having to be brave enough to wear certain stat-boosting outfits and the music being diegetic through the main character Neku's headphones. But man the combat gameplay is really where the storytelling shines. In twewy's world, characters have to pair up in combat and this is represented by controlling two characters at once, one on each of the ds's two screens. The characters share a health bar and pass a puck back and forth that increases damage as they co-operate. Some enemies can only be taken out by this teamwork attack.
    The difficulty curve is very steep because Neku starts off very closed off to other people, but as the game progresses and he begins to open up you start to get a hang of the combat... until your first partner, a friendly girl named Shiki, is replaced by Joshua, a smug, narcissistic and unhelpful kid. Suddenly the combat takes another difficulty spike since Josh is controlled quite differently from Shiki as Neku struggles to get along with him. For the final boss, at Neku's lowest point, he's left alone without any partner and suddenly the game becomes a struggle to survive all by yourself. It really makes you feel the loss of Neku's friends and amplifies the relief when you get to team up for final moves with them. I could go on and on, but every aspect of the game is focused on telling this story of cooperation and it's just so clever and well done.

One of my best friends made a very bad personal decision with some dude she ended up regretting and I feel so much impotence. Besides that, I’m a teacher and I had to help with the oral and written exams of a bunch of different classes at the same time all day from 10 am to 8 pm besides keeping all the students relaxed and helping them, I’m exhausted. On top of that, tomorrow I have to perform Queen songs in a choir rather early in the day for my singing class and my best friend won’t be able to be present. And ON TOP OF THAT I’m depressed because I found out the owner of the academy in which I work as a teacher, who taught me from 10 years old up to now at 20, and who I respect a lot, will leave next year after 40 years of managing her academy because of important health issues. I have so many messages from people I care about left unread from days ago and I feel so much guilt. I haven’t eaten healthily in a couple of days, I didn’t sleep as much as I should’ve, I’m afraid of my own intrusive thoughts reappearing, one of my students cried out of fear even though she got an almost perfect score. And all this, it was all day, and I found out all the bad news at the same time while I was working and everything else was happening.
    Today I’m broken.
    That being said, I couldn’t help but cry a little out of emotion when you talked about that melody in Dark Souls 3, damnnn I always thought it was such incredible heartfelt storytelling, and hearing you talk about it, as weird as it sounds, was exactly what I needed. @@InternetPitstop Also to your question, I think Chrono Trigger had one of the most beautiful ways of story-telling in any game I have played in my life (The Souls series being a close second). Time travel is a staple in most games these days but the emotional weight of time travel that Chrono Trigger delivered through its environmental story-telling is something that few games capture. 65 Million BC all the way through to the distant future. You see civilizations rise and fall and it does an excellent job of making you emotionally invested/connected to these locations and their inhabitants. Also, the relationships that are implied between characters (even across time) and how that fuels their narrative was something I appreciated as it didn't have to be told to us and it gave us as the player the opportunity to piece these individual narratives into the broader story of saving the world from Lavos.

The way you play it is as if you found a game from a different country, and looking through the game manual you have an idea that something can be done but you have to figure it out and try it for yourself for it to mean something. Theres never a point where you really understand dialogue or whats fully going on, but that feeling of just figuring out how to play the game and seeing it progress was way cooler than I ever imagined. Like hell it has zelda dungeons with difficult souls inspired combat, and all I hear from people who haven’t played the game is that it looks weird and stupid. I like how Metroid Prime allows the player to use a scanner to get some info about the environment, like you can dive deeply into the lore of the game to learn more about basically any thing around you or simply pass by and just play the game. Most of the time the scanner tells you about the creatures of the planet, the civilisation that was there, the ruins that you keep seeing... But I remember this one time where I scanned a space pirate computer and it showed me of message they send that was like "holy shit the hunter is on the planet too she already destroyed one of our bases we're doomed !". It was special cause it had something directly linked with Samus and the impact the player has on the game's universe instead of just the lore, and I'm glad i stopped for a second to scan this.

    This video is a straight 10/10. Well edited, funny and timely comedic bits, argues its points well and clearly. Don’t think I’d change anything. It even makes fun of itself and pretentious video game essays (which I’m a guilty fan of) and brings up new examples and points I haven’t seen discussed before.

    One of my favourite stories in games is from Subnautica as it is kind of like the souls games that you have to look for it and piece it together by just scanning and reading about the environment around you. So much of the story comes from the world itself and the game being designed around you having to venture farther and deeper to keep on finding either new materials or progress in the story. I gotta say though amazing video, and you almost feel like an older brother who shares all the same opinions and weird little niches as me. Keep up the amazing work I am awating your great success!

    Excellent video. The importance of game design, from gameplay to world building is so important in building a world and the overall narrative. Often even without focusing on the small details they have a massive impact on your overall experience. You may not notice them but they are guiding you through the narrative, and immersing you in the world.
    The Last Of Us is a prime example I love you brought up. The amount of effort the devs put into the world building whether that be the environments, the notes or even simple character body movements or lighting all these pieces come together to project the themes, world and narrative to the player.
    There aren’t many video essays that look in to the importance of visual story telling, and how devs use the power of video games to tell stories that can’t be told using any other form of media.
    Keep up the great work, your video essays are excellent ❤

    the world ends with you is an interesting one to me because it has a pretty typical anime-ass overarching theme of the power of friendship, but it uses the console it's on in such a unique way to force the player to play around that theme by literally controlling two characters at once, one character on the top screen of the DS and the other on the bottom screen, working in tandem and pulling off crazy combos together, meaning that being in sync and having the two characters work together is not only the character arc of the protagonist but it's also the main gameplay mechanic

    • @Lionheart831
      @Lionheart831 Před rokem

      Dark Souls is more of a gameplay style with lores rather than the storytelling itself. Yes, it's good to have storytelling in today's gaming world compared to 3 or 4 decades ago, however, storytelling isn't the main priority of playing these video games. Gameplay is the main reason why video games are meant to be played for, not storytelling. Anyone can get good storytelling from reading a book, comic book, or from watching a good classic film, but not from video games unless they were Visual Novel which I think that they're nice, but I don't know if I considered them as actual video games imo.

    • @poentecontente
      @poentecontente Před rokem +1

      @@Lionheart831 I agree 100% that gameplay is the most essencial part of a game. I don't think Froms games would be my favorites if it weren't for the gameplay. But I get really tired of games with no plot at all and I'm really tired of simple plots just as an excuse for a game. So when Dark Souls tells it's story through the atmosfere and gameplay instead of cinematics, for me it's the best of both worlds. And I only truly fell in love with the franchise after understanding the world a little better, because only then I started to notice the story beats in the enviroment.

    • @Lionheart831
      @Lionheart831 Před rokem +1

      @@poentecontente I agree with your views as well, 110%. I really don't have an issue a game that have gameplay focus based with little to none story because I can finish that game off and play another, but I must admit, there are times that I don't like the repetitiveness of the gameplay in video games that deals with farming for a particular item or grinding a level or two just to power up. Other than that, I really enjoys that gameplay in video games as long if they're good or good enough to draw my attention.💯
