What a great video. What a very good point about plastics and going outdoors. Have you thought about building a rudimentary "bed" from poles to get yourself off the ground? Perhaps even a poncho on top of a big pile of leaves, you might sleep a bit better. I'm really enjoying your videos!

Fantastic video. When you only have canvas and wool and you are hiking .... you need to burn a lot more wood if you want a warm night. Long fires are a lot of work!! Try adding the M1945 bag liner for extra warmth :-)

My greatest respect for your effort in order to avoid plastics. With regard to this topic I 100% agree. But I also have to say..to be honest: Although I don't like plastics either (and not just since yesterday..), for camping/ bushcrafting purposes I buy what is available..and affordable..with attention to minimal plastics possible. It's just very very stressful and frustrating to see that it's almost impossible to avoid it (positive example is you or your gear)... I will keep an eye now on military stuff.. But as I saw so far...this old stuff is really expensive..or out of stock... - I enjoyed your video very much. Thank you.

As far as using Wool blankets, you need to look up how to make a "Cowboy" blanket roll. It uses canvas and two light wool blankets. Or one heavy one, to make a "Sleeping Bag". It's a bit heavy, but very warm.
@@gilesbinyon Consider waltzing matilda... a swag. All bedding and soft stuff rolled in the bed roll with a dilly bag across the opposite shoulder for balance holding the food and such. Spreads the weight well and more comfy than you might think.

If you want to stay warm sleep the way I did as a child in the 50's, with a cotton bag filled with goose down. If it gets really cold use a wool blanket next to you and then the goose bag over it. We had no central heating and in the winter it got down to zero F sometimes in the house.

Im a cotton canvas fan myself, i really like your old school approach. Is your fire pit a UCO product or is it just a cheap stainless strainer? it seems to work great for this type of camping.

Thanks very much for watching and commenting. Yeah, in this video I use a ‘Nite Ize figure of 9’ type of tensioner (they are good and I have a load from work). But more recently I have pared everything down to the bare minimum. So now I just rely on line work to create and hold the tension in the ridge line. There are easy ways of doing this (my vid on setting up shelters shows one). Thx again and ATB 😊👍

I picked up a dachstein wool sweater recently. It’s a heavy boiled wool, very thick sweater that would be ideal for sleeping in. Probably weighs around 1.5kg though!

Hiya and thanks for your comment. These military capes come in at 6 ft square which does make for a smallish shelter. I’m 5 ‘ 6 and sounds like you’re about 5’ 7 so should be okay unless you like to fully stretch out straight sleeping ? You may have an old tarp or sheet you could pitch up in the garden as a 6’ square lean-to or plough point to check it out 👍
Hi Dan. In this video the pot is a cheap 1.2L from eBay - but it does a great job and is robust too. Latterly I have had great success with a 750mm titanium pot which cuts down on weight and space but it is still possible to cook a meal (for one). Thanks for the comment too 🙂👍

Hi Giles, I also am trying to elimiate as much as possible the use of plastics/synthetics in my 'wild camping/bushcraft'. Have you seen Cimbrer Bushcraft? Tom there has recently redesigned his 'firepit' after using one like yours for a while. His new one has three interlocking outer pieces and a centrepiece, which fold down flatter for carrying, taking less space.

plastic and silver foil alng with bloody kfc bags are ruining the country side alog with the sodding tins. when i was younger i used do a lot offcycling camping, i would cycle from bedford to over the humber bridge and around the coastline, mind you when i was 16 the roads where safer. but all i took was a tarp a couple off knives a catty a bag and water container, and a pot. for cord i used rope, and for sleeping i just had one wool blanket mind you back then a wool or sodding itchy blanket as some called them was cheap and easy to get. the tarp was cotten and had to be oiled/waxed to make it water proof
Thank you very much. It’s interesting to hear that there was a time when pretty much all basic cheap camping was probably plastic free !!! And I agree that there is far too much litter left around the countryside. But I like to think that it is not from most sensible wild campers 🤞
@@gilesbinyon i suppose you remember the old tarps tehywas made from canvas off the side off lorries . after a lorry side was damagedd they used to burn or throw away the sides yet they made great tarps and often was given to you for free, all you needed was add some gromets for eye holes. all the food was in brown paper bags hell even fish and chips was wrapped in paper, yet now it strophome and plastic yet we supposed to be more recyling, what was more recycled than milk bottles from milk man?
Hi again Giles. Just a little thing, but I noticed you threw the brown paper bag in the fire, as also the greasy paper bag in the other video.. Bare with me please lol.. I know you make your own firestarters and one occasion, you needed two. Now, I'm always thinking ahead of my next fire ×2, regardless of my standard prepared firelighters, and I would imagine that conservation of resources would sit well with you given the ethical style of camping you do, so, I always have a little scrub bag. Weighs nothing even when containing two "Next fires". Bits of birch bark as you can imagine, but also that greasy bag and brown paper. Throwing it in the fire, you gained no benefit but adding to your fire starter next time gives you more surety of fire with just one fire starter, or, with other added bits, saving a fire starter.. I imagine you'll wonder what cloud I'm on ha ha.. But it's how I roll lol.. Enjoying every minute of your videos.

I don't think the real problem is taking plastics into the wild but rather not bringing them back again. Modern synthetic materials are excellent and much lighter than the natural materials but the problem is with poorly disciplined individuals who seem to have no clue about doing the right thing.
Cheers Perry. That’s a good point. Although some plastics will start to break down especially in high levels sunlight. These particles are released into the environment and don’t biodegrade- no one knows yet what this will mean. Like you say, sensible people will bring everything home. But I think we should still think about what to do when it has reached ‘end of life’ 👍

Thanks Anthony. Yes a UCO fire bowl but I modified the 4 legs using bolts to raise the height slightly thus causing no long term fire scar 👍

I quite like the odd drone of a distant plane or vehicle in the distance when wild camping. Makes be feel even more apart from civilisation in a way.

Hi Giles, are you using a 1L or 750ml pot? I have been using a 2L Bush Pot and finding it too big. Looking to change to a smaller pot.
Hi Dan. In this video the pot is a cheap 1.2L from eBay - but it does a great job and is robust too. Latterly I have had great success with a 750mm titanium pot which cuts down on weight and space but it is still possible to cook a meal (for one). Thanks for the comment too 🙂👍

Hi Giles, I also am trying to elimiate as much as possible the use of plastics/synthetics in my 'wild camping/bushcraft'. Have you seen Cimbrer Bushcraft? Tom there has recently redesigned his 'firepit' after using one like yours for a while. His new one has three interlocking outer pieces and a centrepiece, which fold down flatter for carrying, taking less space.
Great to hear you are also trying cut out synthetics Adrian. And yes, I like Cimbrer Bushcraft and watched Tom make his new fire bowl 👍

plastic and silver foil alng with bloody kfc bags are ruining the country side alog with the sodding tins. when i was younger i used do a lot offcycling camping, i would cycle from bedford to over the humber bridge and around the coastline, mind you when i was 16 the roads where safer. but all i took was a tarp a couple off knives a catty a bag and water container, and a pot. for cord i used rope, and for sleeping i just had one wool blanket mind you back then a wool or sodding itchy blanket as some called them was cheap and easy to get. the tarp was cotten and had to be oiled/waxed to make it water proof
Thank you very much. It’s interesting to hear that there was a time when pretty much all basic cheap camping was probably plastic free !!! And I agree that there is far too much litter left around the countryside. But I like to think that it is not from most sensible wild campers 🤞
@@gilesbinyon i suppose you remember the old tarps tehywas made from canvas off the side off lorries . after a lorry side was damagedd they used to burn or throw away the sides yet they made great tarps and often was given to you for free, all you needed was add some gromets for eye holes. all the food was in brown paper bags hell even fish and chips was wrapped in paper, yet now it strophome and plastic yet we supposed to be more recyling, what was more recycled than milk bottles from milk man?

I know you make your own firestarters and one occasion, you needed two.
Now, I'm always thinking ahead of my next fire ×2, regardless of my standard prepared firelighters, and I would imagine that conservation of resources would sit well with you given the ethical style of camping you do, so, I always have a little scrub bag. Weighs nothing even when containing two "Next fires".
Bits of birch bark as you can imagine, but also that greasy bag and brown paper.
Throwing it in the fire, you gained no benefit but adding to your fire starter next time gives you more surety of fire with just one fire starter, or, with other added bits, saving a fire starter..
I imagine you'll wonder what cloud I'm on ha ha.. But it's how I roll lol..

I don't think the real problem is taking plastics into the wild but rather not bringing them back again. Modern synthetic materials are excellent and much lighter than the natural materials but the problem is with poorly disciplined individuals who seem to have no clue about doing the right thing.
Cheers Perry. That’s a good point. Although some plastics will start to break down especially in high levels sunlight. These particles are released into the environment and don’t biodegrade- no one knows yet what this will mean. Like you say, sensible people will bring everything home. But I think we should still think about what to do when it has reached ‘end of life’ 👍
