    Wonderfully atmospheric Giles, I'm so glad you managed to post a summer solstice vid. Its fantastic that this ancient landscape with its timeless monuments are still honoured, I'm sure our ancient forefathers would be pleased that their efforts are still appreciated in some small way. Thanks again.

      Thanks very much ultrarunner, always great to get your comments. Yeah, I was so lucky to be able to get out for the solstice. I think you make a wonderful observation and I agree - I’m sure our ancestors would be pleased that we are making use of their work and beliefs to try and reconnect a bit with nature. Especially as they are probably shocked and saddened with the way humanity has been treating nature for the past few hundred years.

    Thanks for a lovely well made video Giles. You said they had found some part cremated bones when investigating the burial mounds. Magical evening and somehow right to find others gathering to mark the solstice too. I always wonder if the barrows would have been kept chalky and white; a landmark for people and glowing pink in the sunset if the weather was right. Just a thought. As well as a friendly dog you also met a hawk and deer, so the vibes were definitely good!

      Thanks very much Catherine, great to hear your comments. And I love your hypothesis about the barrows and wouldn’t it add to the beauty of a midsummer night festival/ritual ? I love to see the wildlife and sometimes feel very lucky and certainly grateful. Perhaps the less one impacts nature the closer one gets to it ….. there’s another hypothesis….. I hope that both yours and mine are correct anyway.

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors Před 2 lety

      I remember having a very specific sensation at those barrows - I had got the train to that area earlier in the day, and at the station before boarding, I'd gone to one of the shops therein, and overheard a very mundane conversation between a couple about whether or not they should go for the "meal deal" (one of those triangle sandwiches and a packet of crisps or something like that).
      Somehow that conversation was reverberating in my head when I got to the barrows, and I was taken by the stark contrast between how I imagined life would have been in Bronze Age Britain - much more attuned to and dependent on nature - and the bizarre detachment from reality most of us seem to have in the modern "meal deal" era.

    • @gilesbinyon
      @gilesbinyon  Před 2 lety

      Thanks very much for watching and that great comment. I think you have really hit-the-nail-on-the-head there. We all tend to assume that Man’s march through history is accompanied by a corresponding increase in knowledge and intelligence. And yet, as you say, if we just occasionally reconnect with nature and our ancestors it very quickly becomes apparent that our growing disconnect from the natural world could, in fact, be causing the opposite. And we are indeed possibly blundering towards a civilisation catastrophe 😐 Keep safe, well, outside and videoing (tweeds or no tweeds) Cheers👍

    Hi Giles, it looked like you had a wonderful evening with some very good people. Always a bonus. Maybe you could mod a uco fire trough to help resolve some of the issues that you've been experiencing. Definitely a cheaper alternative to a large bushbox. I think if you could reduce its height then you could still benefit from the reflective properties of your windshield but still keeping your fire contained. Just food for thought buddy 👍

    Absolutely loved this video Giles - one of your very best. Laughed when you called the burial mound hump 5 lol. I wonder if the Bronze Age settlers ever called it that. "where are we burying this one lads?" "Hump 5."
    Totally agree with you about Midsummer too being tinged with a degree of sadness. While it is a great day that comes at the end of weeks of endless daylight one knows that from 21 June onwards the days will get shorter as the light starts to fade and the greenery dies back. Guess all any of us can do is enjoy it while we can.

    We’ve still got a long summer ahead yet, before another winter comes around…👍🏻
    Personally, I don’t particularly like this time of year for wild camping, as it doesn’t get dark (or properly dark at all for that matter) until stupidly late, and then it’s light again by 3am! 😖
    So not very conducive for a good nights rest out in the wild at all, certainly not for me at least..
    My ideal is dark by 9pm, and then light again by 7am - that’s the ideal for me when wild camping. ⛺️

      Thanks for watching and I completely understand what you mean about in the comment. But I must say the longer days suit me. I can get a good days hiking and still have light at the end of the day to set up, collect wood, enjoy a cuppa and look around etc etc. Also I don’t really get woken by a bright dawn ( although I’m generally waking on a regular basis to tend the fire). I suppose it’s a case of ‘horses for courses’. Thx again, hope you can get out again soon 👍

      @@gilesbinyon No problem Giles. 👍🏻
      I guess you are much more sheltered from the morning light, under a canopy of trees.
      I generally just do hilltop/mountain camps out under the open sky..
      I also don’t tend to walk much over 5 miles (usually less) to any given potential camp spot, or collect firewood either, with not doing camps in woodland environments - and needing it for warmth like you do..
      I’ll be off to the amazing Lake District for a 3-4 night adventure next month, really looking forward to doing wild camping there, not been up that way since I was a kid!
      Anyways I’m still glad we are the other side of the ‘longest day’. 😄

    You do great videos, Giles. Interesting about the barrows. That’s what I mean about the history you have over there. Looks like you had a good time. Midsummers eve will always mean a little more to me now. I like how you can just kind of hike around like that. Not so over here. You can hike along roads, which I’ve done, but you can’t just head out across country without the possibility of getting into trouble about trespassing, let alone camping without permission. Except for various types of parks, the land is pretty much privately owned around here. Out West, there is a lot more open land. Enjoyable, relaxing and informative. Thanks buddy. 😊 Cheers!

      Yeah, although we have designated ‘access land’ with a full right to roam, it is still not strictly legal to camp (but there are certain areas where it has become tolerated). Like yourselves most land is in private hands. There is debate in England to follow the Scottish government and give the right to roam and camp over all land (as long as responsible behaviour rules are followed). Cheers Mate 😊👍

    Thanks for another great video, Giles, and for sharing your solstice with us. I love sunsets and watching the sun go down. I think dusk and dawn are the most magical parts of the day. It's nice that it developed into a bit of an unexpected social event too.
    I remember once I went out in heavy snow and high winds to a local roundhouse in the woods. It was an epic journey in the blizzard, and when I arrived I sat down and got out my small sandwich and flask. After a bit I was surprised by a party of students turning up, with a lot of food and firewood. I watched as they started trying to get a fire together, and soon it became apparent that they didn't know how to start a fire, do it. Their wood was far too thick and chunky to catch a flame, so I stepped in and asked if anyone had a knife. Using someone's penknife I was able to split their sticks and logs finer so that it would catch the flame from the newspaper they'd brought along. They were all very appreciative, as was I of the food they gave me when it was cooked. It was a chance meeting at a very unlikely time, but we were all thankful that it worked the way it did.
    I see you've put up another new video, I can't wait to watch it.

    Hi Giles, hope you're well. That looked like a lovely Solstice wild camp. You were rewarded with a stunning sunset and some great footage of the Deer.
    A real shame about the fire damage, I guess it's always a bit of a risk having the fire so close. Is it worth reverting back to the larger UCO firebowl that you used to use as a way of keeping the fire a bit more contained?
    Hopefully you're able to come up with another solution for your groundsheet, I was wondering if a wax cotton bedsheet that's cut to size could work and maybe save you a bit of weight and bulk. A friend of mine recently made his own oilskin tarp with a cotton bedsheet and it worked rather well.

      You’re right, I have thought about bringing the UCO pit back into service. Just juggling a few ideas around at the moment. Yeah, the old groundsheet bit-the-dust but gave good service. A waxed Plash Palatka is heavy but makes a tough ground sheet. As you know waxing adds a certain robustness to cotton canvas.

      You did well to escape from your favourite jacket when it caught on fire !!! But I really do need to sort out the problem of burning logs tumbling near to my shelter.
