- Think you’re pretty switched on? Watch this quick video to put your concentration to the test!
Do we really see everything going on around us?
We may feel we do, but the reality is our conscious attention - the part of our brain that can focus and actively ‘think’ - is very limited.
Of all the information coming into our brain we can only pay attention to a fraction: less than 1%!
This is the cause of a phenomenon called ‘inattentional blindness’ - the ‘blind spots’ created by our brain’s limitations.
This means from time to time, we will miss things.
We may also overlook changes in our environment, even when they happen right in front of us!
This simple activity shows there’s a limit to what our brain can handle, and we need to think about what we focus on, especially at times of increased risk.
What blind spots do you need to be managing today?

If this was my first time doing something like this, I’d probably only get the bounces, however after that gorilla one with the basketball, I’ve learnt to be more aware, especially with things like this, I got the correct number of bounces as well as every other change, including the smiley face ball in the first one which I don’t think you mentioned.
There wasn’t a ball with a face on it in the second one
Same, I’ve seen to many of these that I count the bounces with my peripheral vision and try to spot the changes immediately

@@PrevailingFreedom there was a ball with a face on it in both
@@PrevailingFreedomthere was but only for a split second, go to 2:09 and look at the right side
“But did you see the gorilla?”
on the first one I got the bounces, the face, the ball size, and background colour(however I only realised that I noticed the background colour and ball size change after being told, at the time I just noticed something odd and didn't think much of it). And on the second one I got the bounces, the ghost, and the background colour. BTW, did you notice the face in the first test? or that he didn't mention it? lol
I only noticed the face and was kind of sure the shape of the balls changed although i wasn't certain they did. I missed everything else. I also counted 29 bounces but was also half sure that I missed one while counting and that it was actually 30.
I knew a face appeared in the first one but surprised he didn't mention it. I think this is a fine test about awareness with priority or goal in mind and was pleasantly surprised how much I can multitask by increasing priority/scope of my attention without getting stressed or inaccurate.
yeah lol
I saw it!
2:47 Well yes, yes we can.
I knew I had to take the test when I read "counting the bounce" and I was like "ugh, too much work"
Social media brain damage
Tfw when you’re told you need to pay attention to a certain detail so you instead hyper-focus on it to the point of pure insanity and forget why you’re even doing this in the first place.
I stopped/spaced out at least four times while typing this comment and it took me more than two minutes to type. :)
Rip man......L
For the first challenge, I counted all 30 bounces, noticed the background change and saw the little smiley face, I did notice the octagon or hexagon shape and felt that it was weird, but didnt realize the balls changed shape until he told us
For the second challenge, I counted all 10 bounces, noticed the weird ghost ball, and the background change but had no idea the shaded area changes shaped
So is my brain weird and I am able to notice more stuff or is this an expected result, this is the second video like this if that matters
I also missed a smiley in the second round apparently, so I'm not that special
How did i miss all the changes? 😫😅
First: I counted 29 bounces, noticed background change, noticed the octagons, noticed the smiley face
Second: I counted 10 bounces, noticed the ghost, didn't notice the background change, didn't notice the shadow change shape, barely noticed the smiley face
you have to be 5 years old of course its normal
I was gonna do the other rounds, but you spoiled it!
Counted everything, saw everything. That’s what you get for not using TikTok or short video format, thank God I did not fail such an easy test
same
i only didnt see the shade and shape changes, anything else i noticed
"tf why the background changing"
"oo smily"
"oo ghostee"
"hi again smily"
This Phenomen existed already way before tiktok and Co. Its called selective perception.
One hour of Tiktok a day and I can still clearly perceive everything.
i watch shorts and i passed this test
That is really cool. In the first one it was pretty easy but in the second I got the correct number but didn't notice everything listed, as my eyes were hard wired to the spot.
I dont see the smiley ball i have watch it again and again and still cant see it where is it

@@kaisarsihaloho975it’s in the beggining
@@kaisarsihaloho975 One ball makes that face before leaving the screen
@@kaisarsihaloho975I know I’m really late for this, but at 2:06, a few seconds after that, if you follow the ball that hits the circle and exits high up, it’ll have a smiley face on it shortly before exiting completely.
I noticed the smiley face on round 1 but nothing else. Round 2 was much easier and I spotted all changes apart from the shape on the floor change. Both rounds I managed to count correctly.
There is a trick for things like that. You don't look at details, but on the whole image. If you don't focus your eyes on a single point, but unfocus your eyes to see the whole image without too many details, you can easily spot all the things at the same time.
For the first challenge I counted all 30 bounces, saw a smiley face on one ball and noticed the shape change, but not the background color change.
For the first challenge I counted all 10 bounces, noticed a smiley face and background color change, but not the shaded area changing shape and the ghost appearing.
I counted correctly both times and noticed the change of colors, however I couldn't remember that the shapes changed but I think at the moment of counting the bounces, my brain noticed it and decided to forget about it to focus 100% on the bounces
Yep I count right, I see change of background, of shape, that the two balls are stopped for a while and a smile on the very left one.
Second round I miss the shape of shadow but I barely see the difference even if I try to look at it again. But I count right, see the background changes and the ghost in the right.
I'll be honest, the first challenge was simply too fast for my counting to keep up, and I ended up missing or skipping a few past around 15; I did notice everything but the shape change on both challenges though.
I just counted to 4 and everytime I counted 4 I pulled out my finger
It ended up on 4*7+2
I got 30 and then 10. I noticed the smiley faces, the background changes and the colour changes on the second round. I didn't see the ghost or the shaded area change though.
First challenge. Yes to all the things. Plus I saw the smiley face too.
This video is π seconds long 3:14
a 180 degree walk around the unit circle.
Ayyy my name is π xD
okayyyyyyyyyy😊
I don’t think it’s 3 seconds long
However, I watched a video recently it said that the human brain can “run” 4 different tasks at the same time… But on the other hand air traffic controllers have to manage a lot of planes in there 2 mile area (I think it is 2 miles) some have to manage 10, 20, even 30. So can we train our brain to manage more tasks? Or no?
It was pretty easy test for me, because I used to hyper-focus on something and don’t even notice my surroundings.
sry but thats why it is not easy for people like you as either you can say the correct answers and if you focus on thing then you can;t spot the other stuff as there's a catch as you are focused!
For the first round, I saw none of the background changes but I saw there was a ball with a smiley face and I counted all 30, for the second I noticed the background changed and counted all 10 but noticed nothing else
I noticed every detail in both tests. thanks osu
I noticed the smiley face in round 1 but not in 2. I saw all the remaining changes and got 30 and 10 correctly.
Anyone know where you can find free practice SCAAT tests?
For the first challenge: I was able to count 30 bounces and I noticed a smile face on one of the balls, but i did not notice the differnet shapes or background changes.
For the second challenge: I counted 10 bounces, noticed the ghost and the background change but nothing else.
What are these challenges used for?
It's about our brains ability to focus on certain things and discard others, it's based on a famous experiment I can't exactly recall what it was, something like people passing a ball and you had to count the number of passes yet most people didn't even notice that during the video someone wearing a gorilla suit walked across the screen
I caught almost every change, as well as counted correctly both times. The only thing I missed was the change in the shape of the shadow in the second one. I caught the ghost and smiley because of my peripheral vision. I'm proud of myself, but have to admit that I was actively shifting my attention frequently, because I expected it was a selective attention test.
Didn’t notice anything in the background.
Got all the right answers
I notices the background and I thought there was something weird with the circles, didn't see it tho. I got 30 points
I also got 10 and saw the ghost and the changing background

Am I weird that I got everything that happened here?
I gave up counting bounces before the test even started and decided to just take in the scenery.
I have heard about this before and I thought, I wonder if still knowing that there will be somthing in the background if I will still not be able to see it, the only thing I caught in the first video was the background color even though I expected things to change
I successfully missed everything on both occassions

As someone who had ADHD and can’t focus, I see this as an absolute win.
i also have ADHD and got all information except for the smiley ball.
@@msytbytbxscfshtfxhy If a video is too long for me personally, I’ll start looking at a wall thinking it’s more entertaining 🗿
Both times, I counted the number of balls correctly and identified the background changing, this is probably because whenever I put my mind to it, I can really focus on somthing, however I am also a very visual person with ADHD, meaning I am likely to focus on more than one thing while focusing on somthing, and it usally happens to be related to shape, form, or color.
I saw the background change in color, as well as the shape of the circles' change while counting 30 bounces, what does that supposed to mean?
That means .... You are good at observing 🤷🏻♂️
On the second time I got the ghost and the smile, and I knowticed the background changed at the end. I think that my brain just stopped counting the amount of bounces, but I was still registering that they were bouncing in the shaded area.
on the first one I counted correctly and only noticed the smiley face. On the second I counted correctly, noticed the circle to hexagon, background change, and ghost, but not the face
I did observed everything and counted the bounce in first one , and besides the shape shit of shaded area i noticed everything, does that prove something 🤐
I noticed the balls change shape and the background change color but I missed my count at first one I counted 31 then the second one I counted correct but didn't see the ghost or the simley faced ball. It's pretty cool knowing how my attention to detail you need to practice
Yeah. Old comment but I did the same except I spotted everything but the ghost
On the first one I got all the changes and counted exactly 30 :)
On the second one I only missed the shadow changing shape, but did count exactly 10 :)
I only missed some things, like the ghost, because I was purposely only focused on look directly at the shaded area. I consciously ignored everything else. Then I tried a second time and looked at the entire screen. That time I saw everything and still counted the bounces.
That’s funny. I knew that more would be happening, so my first time, I looked at the area slightly above the shaded part and zoned out a little so that I could watch the full screen. I still missed everything except for the background color changing.
saw everything on the first challenge. Second challenge saw everything except the smiley face. Though counted 9 as I imagine the quick look at blinky over there had a bounce going at the same time.
I didn't notice background color change in the two tests. But I managed to count and to grab happy faces. That's the only thing.
Wow
That was amazing
I could always notice the changing background colour while counting but nothing else
Hello! My name is Anna and I am an undergraduate studying psychology. This semester I will be doing my first psychology study which is very similar to what you have done in this video. I was wondering if I could have your permission to use this video in my study. I would edit out the person speaking and would just have the parts of the video with the balls bouncing.
And th 10 too
And 30
How did it go?
Howd it go, ya still with us?
@@naomiannesantos6182 damn 5 years later
i counted correctly but i only noticed the colors change
My first runthrough i saw a smiley face on the leftmost ball and the balls turning to octagons but right before they stopped at the end i realized that i was counting 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4 and not adding on so i went back and actually counted them but even on the second gothrough i didn’t notice that the background changed color
The second test i did even worse and only noticed that the background changed color
I think you should send more videos like this one
And they must be much longer than this one
I saw the smile, the shape change, the color, and the bounces 😅
Only thing i didn't catch was the background change in the first round. There was also a smiley in the first round that wasn't mentioned
The thing is, being able to ignore (seemingly) irrelevant information to focus on the critical information is an important survival mechanism. Not just to survive being stalked by predators, but imagine, for example, driving in rush hour traffic and feeling the sensation of every little place your outfit is rubbing on your skin, or a surgeon focusing on squeaky shoes in the hall outside the OR. It's not a bad thing to tune things out.
At the same time, the subconscious should be able to detect subtle changes and bring them to the forefront when necessary. This is what's largely called a "sixth sense" or "my Spidey senses are tingling". That too is a survival mechanism.
I don´t get the pauses between sentences. I mean this as a suggestion for future videos. Cheers.
I counted both correctly, and noticed the background change and faces at the corner of my eye but the ghost is the only thing I completely missed.
27 I counted. 💜the video
I noticed everything. My brain is the ultimate noticer
*these balls bounce* -legendary quote 💀
"Get ready, the balls will start bouncing in 3, 2, 1"
sources? where did yall base this from
I only missed the shaded hexagon morph.
i immediately lost count when the rhythm changed lmao
I got the number right and noticed all the changes what does that means?
Aced the first one, but didn’t notice the shape of the shadow and the background color on the second one.
it's either im a genius or the test was overrated
Not gonna lie, when he said did you see the smiley face, I was like, WHAT SMILEY FACE!?!?
I dont understand. I noticed the Ghost, the shadow changing shape, the smile face ball (because I was waiting for it again) and I got the bounces correct. Does nobody use peripheral vision anymore or what? For round 1 I noticed the changes happening but I didn't know they'd be part of the test or brought up considering this started out being about bounces.
I noticed everything and counted the bounces perfectly for both rounds too.
I just softly focused on the center and looked around my peripheral vision for anything else that would appear.
Things like these always like adding, “Oh yeah, you might’ve kept track of specifically how many bounces these three balls with different colors bounced in 3 separate directions, but did you notice the MASSIVE penguin flipping you off in the background??? HAHA WE GOT YOU. YOU FAILED TO NOTICE EVERYTHING!!!”
Brain Games always pulled that 💩.
Now I look out for extra things on any video like this because we can’t just have a plain concentration video where you’re genuinely trying to concentrate on multiple things on screen.
No, now it has to add subtle or even extremely hidden “background objects” to keep track of too.
That turned into a bit of a rant…
Anyway, I learned from my Motorcycle Safety Course (which many people don’t pass):
That you don’t want to look TOO hard at any one thing because this will create
“in-attentional blindness.”
Which is: The failure to see what is plainly visible.
When you look straight ahead you only see full detail in a 3° cone.
Then within 10-15° you see color and shape.
At a whopping 45° is when you can see a general shape of an object and 90° onwards you might notice nothing.
I also learned that the best search pattern is:
Up, Down, Side to Side.
Now, if you’re fixating on a certain point then you need to at least do this with your peripheral vision if not with full eye or head movement.
EXTRA
Here is the Peripheral Vision Test if you want to try it.
Get a piece of paper and make it about 3x3 in.
Draw a 1x1 in. box in the middle then color it. (Preferably Red or any color that personally stands out to you).
Then draw a small circle in the middle of the 1x1 box and color that a more noticeable color.
(This could be Red and the 1x1 box green or yellow or vice versa).
While holding the paper, look forward and
Move one arm out to the side (like a half t-pose)
Slowly move your extended arm toward the center where it will line up with your eyes.
While you do this, stop once you see the paper in your peripheral vision then each time you notice more detail about the paper.
(Like the shape then the color).
Notice the angle that your arm is at for each stop.
This is when your eyes see an object with a certain clarity for those peripheral degrees.
You’ll probably notice that you don’t see the small circle until the paper is nearly right in front of you.
(No cheating…keep your eyes still the whole time. Use the edges of your eyes to see).
Easy, spoted everything and counted corectly.
Got everything the first time, missed only the smiley face the second time.
Granted, I've done some similar stuff before.
In the first round, I noticed everything and I was able to count the 30 bounces. On the second round tho, I was unable to spot the ghost and the smiley ball, but got the counting right and noticed the shade and the background change. I gave round 2 a second go, just for fun, and I noticed everything but my counting got to 11 because of one ball that bounced just at the limit of the shade. I guess that's my limit haha
I didn’t pay attention to the shape changing except for the shaded area but I thought it turned into a square
I counted 30, I immediately saw the background color start changing, I saw the smiley face on the left ball. I did not notice the shape of the circles changing.
On the second one, I counted 10, I noticed the ghost in the bottom right corner, and then I saw the shape turn from an octagon into a circle.
I noticed the smile in the first task as well
Man, I'm autistic as shit, I noticed all of it and was flabbergasted when he said I was supposed to lose track of everything...
There was a smiley face!!
I missed every single changes at both round 1 and 2. What could that mean about my brain function?🤐
I lost count after the second bounce in the first test but noticed everything else
i got 29 my first time and noticed both the change in shape and the background change. I guess i just miscounted the bounces
I saw everything and got it correct both times
It's my first time watching this, snatched video like this before. I knew the bounces aren't the main part. I got the bounces right, nd noticed the background changes colors and one ball changing to happy face for a split second. I did not watch the full video. I do not know what hidden details I missed.
Scrolling through the comments instead of watching the bounces
The only think I saw was the smiley face in the first one and I legit thought I was hallucinating🤣
I knew that i saw the background and shape change, but i didnt know until he told me
ADHD helps xD since you can’t concentrate on one thing
Quiet anyone can
I counted and immediately forgot what I even counted and I think one ball bounced like twice at the end lol
I had to restart the beginning twice to even look at the screen and stop talking to myself about a video I hadn’t even watched yet 💀
Actually, people with ADHD would really hyper-focus if they’re interested on something enough.
Well I only missed the shaded area changing shape so I guess some people are better at multi-tasking than others
1. counted all 30, noticed background change, saw the balls change shape but i couldn't tell if it was because of the background changing.
2. counted 10, noticed background change, saw the puddle turning into a different change. had no idea about the ghost and smiling ball. interesting !.
Colour changes shape changed and even size.... But all these things were not noticed first time
I… was able to find all of the secrets while still counting the correct number of balls lol
I believe that if we train our brains for a period of time, we will be able to perceive and process more information than usual.
Yes, that's called hyper vigilance and is usually a pretty big factor of stress. It's pretty common for Autistic or ADHD people, or people with traumas.
i got everything but the change in shape of the shadow. it was too subtle for me to notice. the smiley and the color change was too obvious
I just looked at the task to get it correct.
I don't know yall, but I have been diagnosed with ADHD and still got all the counting right and noticed everything
