The expiriment was originally meant to test how lackluster our attention really is, as many think and truly believe that they collect all information and are impeccably good at retaining information. This video seems to be inspired of the old video, and i knew the "trick" but only managed to see the fifth hand while also trying to keep up with the task. Quite a good retake on a 20 year old psychology experiment.
So this is a skill I picked up because of Mario Party. No I’m not joking. In the nesting doll game, they move extremely quickly, which makes it very difficult to follow which doll has the most layers directly. But if you focus on the center of the screen and use your peripheral vision to follow the cup, not only is it much easier, but you end up catching the oddities in videos like this! Have fun practicing!
I also learnt to do this and it works really well. Something about not focusing on the specific cup allows you to see more of the table, so if the cup changes location rapidly, you're less likely to lose track of it due to tunnel vision.
I did a different thing: follow the chocolate cup intermittently while looking around for oddities (it was obvious there would've been something weird since it's titled selective memory)

If you use a different color like perhaps brown, I may not have noticed. The fifth hand was completely out of my mind. It did seem like hands were covering a lot of the screen sometimes, but I figured that was normal (which it is). I also followed the chocolate easily enough with just my peripheral vision while I tried to focus on everything at once. I suspect moving things more quickly would enhance the illusion. That was fun!
Knowing it’s a selective attention test doesn’t mean you do better by paying attention to other things. That’s what selective means, picking something and sticking with it and not getting distracted by other things

This didnt happen when watching this type of video the first time so definately some bias/expectation affected it for me! Very good video and great way to confuse your friends tho!
I love this video. I thought it will be more of these clickbaity videos in a style of "ONLY 2% OF PEOPLE WOULD SEE IT", but that actually trolled viewers in a positive way. You told us to check under which cup is the object and we all focused on it. To the point, that most people didn't notice duck, because they were focused on the "right cup". And the color of the cups too! Clever idea to chose green and blue, because other colors could be too obvious. As for the hands, for some reason I though there are 3 pairs of hands from the beginning, but I didn't notice anything weird that there is more or less of them. That's really great video and it really works!

I had a test like this one time during onboarding at a factory (don't do it, it's not worth it) Wherein there was a video where a couple of balls were thrown between two teams, and you had to track one. Well, everyone in the room tracked the ball, myself included. However, what everyone else failed to notice is that the background color changed, one of the left team members swapped out, and a guy in a gorilla costume walked in the background. The guy overseeing the test talked to me afterward and said that there were like 4 other things I missed, but not to feel bad become in the 5 years he'd been doing that test I was the only one to notice the background color changing 😄 I was quite proud of that.
I used to play this A LOT and even since I was a kid, I for some reason I would play looking directly in the middle of all the cups, so my actual eyes weren’t following any of them specifically. I noticed everything going on and still knew where the chocolate was. It’s a good technique for some things, but in general I struggle with focusing on too many things at once😅😁
Same here. I find that it is often much easier to lose the actual cup when you focus too much and the cup gets to slightly of your field of focus or if there is collisions or lapsing between them.
Actually, missing all those extra information is actually a really useful skill for abstract reasoning. It allows you to concentrate on local elements and ignore the general picture if you choose to, which helps find patterns and such. It’s also somewhat helpful with reading comprehension, but that connection is still fairly likely correlation and not causation, it needs more testing.

As the original commenter said being able to focus strictly on specific details is useful in this situation and similar situations, while focusing on the bigger picture or outer and more broad elements is useful for other types of situations. Being able to focus on both the fine details, bigger picture as well as everything in between is useful in all kinds of situations, although I can imagine it could be hard to control your focus because you are naturally focusing on everything going on around you all at once (at least from my understanding of ADHD). That must be exhausting and stressful sometimes, although I'm sure it comes in handy a lot too. I think ADHD people are a blessing to humanity, keep being awesome buddy!

I noticed the ducky, and the blue cups swapping out for green, but missed the extra hands. I also managed to track the chocolate. However, I felt the video was one of the experiments where they fit other things in to pay attention to so I was focusing as little in the chocolate as I could so that I could pay attention to the surrounding environment.
This was probably for a school assignment but still great job recreating the experiment. For the record, I saw the duck and the fifth hand but not the colors changing. They also landed in a different row so there was no way I was going to notice them.
I messed up too the first time and got the second one right. I guessed the one on the right because my eyes knew that it was in the middle but at some point I noticed that both of her hands were covering the cups with the chocolate in it that was on the left and the middle cup and she moved her hands quicker than how she was doing it before by a slight difference. So since I couldn’t see either cup I knew that normally it’d be in the middle but I thought that maybe she decided to do the old “ you think I switched the cup but my hands covered the cups so you don’t realize that they’re actually still in the same place “ I thought that she was trying to be smart and create the illusion that she moved the cups when really it was still in the same place when really I was just overestimating the first round and so I thought it was more difficult than what it really was. Then after she did that she kept moving them so I knew that either it’s in the middle and the first round was way too easy. Or it’s actually a trick round and she thought I wouldn’t notice so since I thought she didn’t switch the cups I assumed the second option would be the right cup since it was the other cup I thought she didn’t switch. Basically I thought it was gonna be harder so since I overthought it I guessed the right one but because it was actually easier than I had anticipated it was the middle one. My eyes knew which one it was but I didn’t trust my eyes and instead over complicated everything. And I got the second one right because I knew that since she wasn’t planning on doing any tricks to confuse me that as long as I don’t overthink things it would be very easy. But since the round was to guess which one had the chocolate and nothing else the only thing that I looked at was the cup with the chocolate in it and absolutely nothing else so I never realized the rest of the things.
QUICK OBSERVATION: I would suggest that next time you do an experiment like this try to mute or turn down the sound when you're mixing the cups, because (I wore headphones) I constantly heard the Hershey's bumping the cup in which in was inside, so even if I loose it from sight when I saw the duck, the hand or the green cups I just needed to listen when you moved one of the pink cups to find it back,
Probably doesn't matter since that isn't really the point of the video. But you could also put different color objects under there and ask the viewer where the white Kiss is, or similar.
Despite keeping my eyes on the cup with the chocolate the entire time I did notice the duck and the colour change. The extra hand was a clever and sneaky idea and I think the chocolate was too low on the screen when it appeared for me to actually notice it. Great work, definitely had to concentrate a bit too keep up on the second round.
I got the candies right and noticed the green because at like 1:44 a green one falls over and I was like... oh that's suspicious.. wait.. lol but that's all I got.

Saw everything besides the color change from blue to green, I noticed green being added but didn't realize you'd remove the blue entirely. There was a point in the second test where my attention shifted to the top of the screen, and i thought HECK I might have lost track of the chocolate - I narrowed my attention back and I knew it was one of two cups, then I recalled my peripheral memory and picked which of those two cups I was committing to following the rest of the way. I was frustrated that I let “extra colors and an extra set of hands” throw me like that! I wondered what was wrong with my attention! So yes, I “NOTICED” the duck and the fifth hand, but I did NOT process what they were or that there was a particular thing which drew my attention away from the chocolate. Kind of eerie feeling lol

I noticed everything going on and still knew where the chocolate was. It’s a good technique for some things, but in general I struggle with focusing on too many things at once😅😁

Same here. I find that it is often much easier to lose the actual cup when you focus too much and the cup gets to slightly of your field of focus or if there is collisions or lapsing between them.

Actually, missing all those extra information is actually a really useful skill for abstract reasoning. It allows you to concentrate on local elements and ignore the general picture if you choose to, which helps find patterns and such. It’s also somewhat helpful with reading comprehension, but that connection is still fairly likely correlation and not causation, it needs more testing.

As the original commenter said being able to focus strictly on specific details is useful in this situation and similar situations, while focusing on the bigger picture or outer and more broad elements is useful for other types of situations. Being able to focus on both the fine details, bigger picture as well as everything in between is useful in all kinds of situations, although I can imagine it could be hard to control your focus because you are naturally focusing on everything going on around you all at once (at least from my understanding of ADHD). That must be exhausting and stressful sometimes, although I'm sure it comes in handy a lot too. I think ADHD people are a blessing to humanity, keep being awesome buddy!

In dis case i think me being distracted by other things on da screen helped me n thank u, its really tough for me having adhd especially cuz my finals r a few weeks away but yah adhd is cool n i wouldn’t be who i am without it so im happy to hav it :DD

I noticed the ducky, and the blue cups swapping out for green, but missed the extra hands. I also managed to track the chocolate. However, I felt the video was one of the experiments where they fit other things in to pay attention to so I was focusing as little in the chocolate as I could so that I could pay attention to the surrounding environment.

I messed up too the first time and got the second one right. I guessed the one on the right because my eyes knew that it was in the middle but at some point I noticed that both of her hands were covering the cups with the chocolate in it that was on the left and the middle cup and she moved her hands quicker than how she was doing it before by a slight difference. So since I couldn’t see either cup I knew that normally it’d be in the middle but I thought that maybe she decided to do the old “ you think I switched the cup but my hands covered the cups so you don’t realize that they’re actually still in the same place “ I thought that she was trying to be smart and create the illusion that she moved the cups when really it was still in the same place when really I was just overestimating the first round and so I thought it was more difficult than what it really was. Then after she did that she kept moving them so I knew that either it’s in the middle and the first round was way too easy.
Or it’s actually a trick round and she thought I wouldn’t notice so since I thought she didn’t switch the cups I assumed the second option would be the right cup since it was the other cup I thought she didn’t switch. Basically I thought it was gonna be harder so since I overthought it I guessed the right one but because it was actually easier than I had anticipated it was the middle one. My eyes knew which one it was but I didn’t trust my eyes and instead over complicated everything.
And I got the second one right because I knew that since she wasn’t planning on doing any tricks to confuse me that as long as I don’t overthink things it would be very easy. But since the round was to guess which one had the chocolate and nothing else the only thing that I looked at was the cup with the chocolate in it and absolutely nothing else so I never realized the rest of the things.

QUICK OBSERVATION:
I would suggest that next time you do an experiment like this try to mute or turn down the sound when you're mixing the cups, because (I wore headphones) I constantly heard the Hershey's bumping the cup in which in was inside, so even if I loose it from sight when I saw the duck, the hand or the green cups I just needed to listen when you moved one of the pink cups to find it back,
Probably doesn't matter since that isn't really the point of the video. But you could also put different color objects under there and ask the viewer where the white Kiss is, or similar.

Despite keeping my eyes on the cup with the chocolate the entire time I did notice the duck and the colour change. The extra hand was a clever and sneaky idea and I think the chocolate was too low on the screen when it appeared for me to actually notice it.

The title clued me in, and I saw everything except the correct pink cup.
I learned from other videos like this that there’s always something you’re not supposed to notice, so I was so proud of myself for noticing the blue cups turn to green cups.

There was a point in the second test where my attention shifted to the top of the screen, and i thought HECK I might have lost track of the chocolate - I narrowed my attention back and I knew it was one of two cups, then I recalled my peripheral memory and picked which of those two cups I was committing to following the rest of the way. I was frustrated that I let “extra colors and an extra set of hands” throw me like that! I wondered what was wrong with my attention! So yes, I “NOTICED” the duck and the fifth hand, but I did NOT process what they were or that there was a particular thing which drew my attention away from the chocolate. Kind of eerie feeling lol
For what it’s worth, I have severe ADHD, so my attention is not that of a neurotypical person. Unrelated, forgot to say: VERY well-done video!
