    A quick demo and review of the multifunctional Chips module from Cre8audio (www.cre8audio.com/) part of the NiftyBundle. The other parts (Cellz and the NiftyCase will get their own reviews).
    Even though the Module says Chips (with an S) the Cre8audio website says Chipz (with a Z) so I'm not sure what the correct name is.

    Good video and I agree on your assessment. what a great value. picked up the bundle. what a no brainer for me when starting a system.

    Depending how soon people see this, chipz is $69 on B&H so I cannot imagine any regrets. An lfo like this is alone basically worth the price or damn near it

    It was my first modular a couple years ago. At first I rejected it as not being 'good enough and bought other VCOs. Then I came back to it and realized the others were too good and Chipz was what I wanted most. ;)
    It is wonderful for doing melody if you mix the two voices. Like you said it has flavor.
    I recently patched it into the Tom Evans Dual Dreadful VCF which is resonant and then mixed the two sounds and it was gigantic.
    People are dumping them and you can get a used one for near nothing.

    I boguht the bundle but quickly upgraded to a bigger case and sold cells and Chipz. But I still appreciate Cellz as a touch trigger generator or a double 4 step sequencer (never used more steps). Cellz had indeed a specific sound and the lfo's came in very handy. Sometimes I regret not having them anymore

    Ok, you made me definitely decide against this bundle :) I find the sequencer to be weird and the sound of the VCOs is too basic. But the quality of your videos is awesome, thanks, man!

      I'll agree Cellz is practically useless and I'd rather see some sort of VCA/EG module or even a lofi digital effects module in its place. But the whole point of this bundle is to provide the buyer with the ability to make noise out of the box. I think the case alone with its power supply and MIDI converter is well worth it.

      @@senorverde09 I've gotten a new appreciation for both Cellz and Chips when I combined them with the Takaab VCA and SAR from Siam Modular. Then they really shine.

    Great video Jesper! What do you have the Nifty Case running to for sound? An amp? Audio interface?

    My tips and tricks, money! A great modular set up costs money and plenty of it, but getting started doesn’t have to now! I’m on my third nifty case, one of them was a bundle and one happy ending case. Just so I have room and power when the mood strikes to get a module. Yeah I played with the original bundled modules before I replace them, but my first module was the Swarm 411 and I used my semimodular synths to mix and filter until I added some Dreadbox, and three Behringer modules. All three oscillators are able to function with no help but they powerful with the semi set up! Money brother! That’s all it takes. Lol

    • @TheModularClubhouse
      @TheModularClubhouse  Před rokem

      Yep.... Modular will cost you a pretty penny. But when you are able to combine it with your existing setup ( especially if you have semi-modular gear) will go a long way to make the entry point more affordable :)

    Nice video/overview of Cells!
    I know Cells doesn't get much love, and I'm still on the fence whether or not to free up those 12 HP for a Plaits myself.
    When run through a filter and VCA, the chip tuney sound gets a bit toned down and I then quite like especially VCO 2!
    It's like a budget friendly wave folding VCO. :-)

    • @TheModularClubhouse
      @TheModularClubhouse  Před 2 lety

      Excellent! My main recommendation for generative music is to get a module or a source that can act as a sample and hold and a quantizer.

  • @monogonvisualcommunication5880

    I personally having a blast using chips, sounds something like that silver apples would enjoy! If it was my only sound source I might have been bummed, but it's fun thing to have around when I want an 'atari getting chased by michael myers' sound.

    I'm constantly embarrassed by how people from "The Nethers" speak English so well you'd almost think they were native British.
    Thanks for a great demo. I've been eyeing this bundle for a while and this video is driving me closer to the pit of despair that is Modular.
    Cheers matey!

      @@TheModularClubhouse just so you know, I got the Nifty Bundleplus some Behringer modules, a Siam Modular 2LPG and a doepfer mixer. And a Behringer 19" rack and PSU cos it wouldn't all fit. I'm eyeing the Disting EX now. It looks amazing. I might even get an additional Disting Mk.4 they are both super useful, and will, I think, inform me of which stand alone modules i really need. They pack so much punch for such small modules but with the option of expansion. The menu diving might be considered a con, but for me is no problem. I'm pretty sure that the 5pin MIDI breakout will be a must and ive seen some diy "big" screen modifications that look really easy so I'll probably do that once Thonk have the 3u to 1u adapters back in stock.
      Anyway, thanks for pushing me over the edge 😀!
      Cheers!

    Nice video again Jesper. I find your reviews really interesting. What is the role of the modules you own so far in your system as a whole? Do you have a plan or are you testing a variety of modules go decide which ones you will use in your system later? I am completely new to modular synths and I haven’t got any idea of what a complete system should consist of.

    • @TheModularClubhouse
      @TheModularClubhouse  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks a million Ruud! Well, that's a great (and I think the most important question) currently my modular rigs only has sound sources (The sample player and the VCO, Voltage Controlled Oscillator and this module) a simple sequencer (will dive into that in a future video) and a VCF, Voltage Controlled Filter. The simplest set up would be:
      a) something to set the tone either a contoller like a keyboard or a sequencer,
      b) a sound source (typically a VCO),
      c) a filter (VCF),
      d) then you would expect to have an envelope generator
      e) and a VCA, Voltage Controlled Amplifier.
      But then again you would like to add some modulation to the mix as well and then it becomes really crazy.
      Good starting points are these videos from Andrew Huang: czcams.com/video/cWslSTTkiFU/video.html and czcams.com/video/UXEyEIo-WtA/video.html
      So currently I'm looking for two very distinct modular rigs: one to generate Elektro-Punk, so I need some proper drum sequencing and some good distorted oscillators and the other will be more a Black-Metal-inspired drony ambient and I think I've got the perfect module on its way for that.
      How about yourself: what would be your goal?

    • @ruudlitjens2386
      @ruudlitjens2386 Před 3 lety

      Thanks for the reply, that clarifies a lot and I will watch the suggested videos. I havent really thought of what my goals are. I am a big fan of James Holden and if I could produce sounds that are somewhat close to this I would be happy:
      czcams.com/video/6OC3Taxg7W8/video.html
      Anyway im still not sure if i should dive into modular or maybe im better off with an analog synth like the korg minilogue to start with.
