Cross-border drama as SKorean activist arrested

  • (6 Jul 2012) No Su-hui had a loud and colorful sendoff as he finished a visit in North Korea. Returning home to certain detention in the South through the truce village of Panmunjom was designed to draw attention to his cause.
    SOT
A large crowd, with many waving white unity flags, had lined up to watch No's actual border crossing, as South Korean soldiers and police waited for him. The 68-year-old activist held his own white flag and he was sporting a white unity pin on his lapel as well.
The chants grew more and more frantic as the moment approached for him to cross over the demarcation line.
    UPSOUND
and with a cry of "long live national reunification," No turned, paused dramatically and then walked into arms of security officials, who wrestled with him through the Demilitarised Zone and later going into a police office.
According to South Korea's National Security law, sneaking into the North without government permission is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
In the border city of Paju another crowd of activists gathered. They were furious in denouncing No and his return.
They burned mock figures of him and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The drama as a whole was a reminder of the deep divisions that remain on the Korean peninsula, geographically, politically and socially.

The first time I crossed the border from Oman into UAE (by car), in 2015. nobody stopped me on the Omani side until I reached UAE passport control (it must have been a lunch break or something). The UAE officials refused to grant me entry since I had no Omani exit stamp. So I had to turn back to Omani passport control where they viewed me with suspicion since I now was coming from the direction of the UAE without the UAE exit stamp. Good thing the two countries were on friendly terms and Omanis accepted my explanation and stamped my exit (upon which I continued into UAE), otherwise I could have ended up prosecuted like this Korean guy or been left between the two borders for god knows how long, since my country did not even have an embassy in Oman back then 😳.

      1. East and west were directly controlled by Russia and USA. So on both sides people felt that they are being ruled by someone else. The German nationalism is one of the hardcore in the world. South Koreans are Okay with their governance. North Korean only know autocracy ruled by a Korean dynasty. Korean nationalism is dead after Japanese independence.
      2. The economic and social disparity between east and west Germany was identifiable but rectifiably miniscule. North Korea is poorest of poor and is alien to modern society values and culture.
      3. If we unify NK and SK then their will be massive influx of population from north to south for employment, education etc. Given that most of them are not skilled enough to compete with the south it will create a social and economic disaster.

I want to address those here in the comments who defend Rocket Man. My grandparents lived most of their lives without democracy and freedom. First they lived under Japanese colonial rule, then war, and after that under a dictatorial government until 1987. During most of their lives they never knew freedom, what it means to live in a democratic country. They could not even express their thoughts or political views without being arrested or worse. Today living in a democratic country where basic human values are guaranteed and defended is a great achievement for them. But our generation often takes this for granted. Today there are dictators who threaten what our grandparents created for us. Not only my country, but other neighboring countries are constantly threatened. In North Korea people don't even have the food or the basic necessities of life. They cannot even leave the city where they were born and visit other places in their own country. Many, despite living in a coastal region, have never seen the sea in their entire lives. They are not free to travel and learn about the world and other cultures. They live in a prison without basic human rights and freedom. They are even executed for watching some foreign movie or TV series, human rights do not exist there. I'm not the only one who says that, but thousands of defectors who fled the dictatorship. I really hope a war will never happen and everything will be resolved diplomatically. Although dialoguing with dictators is difficult, they don't care about ordinary people, they only care about themselves. I don't speak English well, so I used a translator. I'm sorry if I made any mistakes

@@multistan9582 If SK is so free and glorious, why do they hold NK refugees in 're-education' centres for months to almost a year? To feed them bullshit agenda. The people are the real victims here, first there's NK propaganda in their heads and they think SK will treat them better, then they're fed with SK propaganda.
      Take an example:
If SK law is supposed to arrest someone who crossed into NK, what is the headline: "SK activist returned from NK taken in by police according to laws in the SKorean constitution"
      Flip sides now:
NK law is supposed to arrest anyone who crosses to SK: "NK Activist arrested under draconian anti-crossing law - likely to be thrown into prison camp".
What's the difference? NK Law also dictates something - so does SK. Why is one 'draconian', 'bloodthirsty' and the other 'as per the law', 'as per due process'
This activist probably also went to a 're-education centre' after this incident (aka 'prison camp'/'gulag', 'labour camp' if it was NK)

Yes, that's true, but I think people would also have this kind of reaction because we often hear that people arrested in the North sometimes suffer heavy sentences and that their human rights might not be respected if they were arrested, so if it happened in the North we'd expect the worst, unlike in the South.
