The following didn't fit within the video description:
Be sure to dress warmly, and prepare for precipitation; we were there at the beginning of June and it was very chilly, windy, and rainy. Also, if necessary, be sure to check with your cell phone provider, for coverage.
Visiting Dutch Harbor is journeying through time: from what was to what is hoped to be. It was worth, more than I can describe, to visit.
(Yes. I've learned to refrain from holding the camera vertically. I'm afraid all 2016 Alaska content will feature vertical shots, though.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--Getting there:
Flights to Dutch Harbor - Unalaska “…are booked through Alaska Airlines using airport code ‘DUT.’ However, the actual flight out of Anchorage is operated through Peninsula Airways, aka Pen Air.”
***A word of caution: stay on top of your flight status and book it well in advance; seasonal fishermen fill up flights quickly and early; I was bumped from my original itinerary and had to reschedule. Bright side: you may share a flight with one of the crew, featured on “Deadliest Catch!” Wild Bill was on our arriving flight.
Grant Aviation also offers flights to Dutch as well as to the western, remote Aleutian island of Atka.
www.flygrant.com/
The ferry: goo.gl/OOwp38
“Ferry service to Dutch Harbor/Unalaska is provided every other week from May through September. The route takes three to three-and-a-half days from Homer, depending on the direction you travel….”

I lived there for almost a year and I cry as I watch this. Missing friends I call my brother's at the Harbor View Bar and Grill. Tell Mario Grill Will says hello
I've lived here my whole life, and I've got the privilege of hiking Makushin in 2017.
@Sean Peters ill be moving up there in August and would love to know a little more about the essentials like where I can find a place to live or possible rv park with hookups; I've not found anything online
@@trptguy23 there are no RV parks with hookups, but there's lots of apartments and places to live. What company are you going to work for? The City does not provide housing per say, but they offer housing with discounts. Other companies could probably find a place for you to live, because they have better connections with people. I don't have Facebook, but I would recommend trying to find people who live in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor that are looking for roommates. It's expensive to live here, and I would highly recommend finding a roommate. I don't know of anyone right now, but if I know of anyone, I can reply with their contact info.
@@seanpeters3690 ill be moving up there to teach school. I understand rents an expense, but I would prefer to live alone as I got a girlfriend who will periodically visit. Shame about the no rv parks, as I would rather spend money on something I would own rather than paying insane rent
@@trptguy23 there's teacher housing here, and I don't think it's free, but it's subsidized and they let teachers live there at a discount, from my understanding. I would recommend contacting the Unalaska City School District, and see what they can do for you. There might be places on the island that have places where you can park RVs, but there's no RV parks where you can hook up to electricity or anything. I can try to look into it, but I work as the Head Lifeguard (basically assistant Aquatic Center manager) and do not really have any direct connections with those people. I know most people here, and I might be able to find out more but I'm not sure. Also, which grade are you going to teach? I was a substitute there for 2 school years before getting a full-time job, and my mom still is a substitute teacher.
@@seanpeters3690 yeah they mentioned it in the interview, if I remember correctly, they only have you living there for a month or so. But that should give me time to find a place, none of my searches were coming up with anything, so its nice to know that there are places.
Fantastic video, thanks for making this
my Uncle Robert Wallberg , Naval officer and Civil engineer from Oregon State Univ. designed the landing strip and a radio tower there.
That's remarkable! I can't imagine the logistics required to design a landing strip for such a challenging location. Thank you, so much, Bill Wallberg, for sharing that! I remain humbled by folks stepping forward, here, to share their personal connections to this incredible place.
Having spent the winter of 1973/74 in Dutch Harbor this video was fascinating for me to watch. I've always wanted to go back for another look but it would be a prohibitively expensive trip. Nicely done and thank you!
Thank you, Ernie Clapton. I would love to return for the opportunity to briefly see snow in Dutch Harbor. I hope to return, one day, when possible. I hope the opportunity comes for you, too, to return. Thank you for watching, and for sharing your personal experience, there.
(Please excuse in the lapse in response; I was never notified of your comment.)
Thank you for your video it brought back many fond memories of when I worked with my father, brothers, cousins, uncles in the king crab fishing industry between 1965 to 1975 while I was on summer break from school. Times were a lot simpler back then. There were no paved roads or a bridge to connect Unalaska. There were two stores, Carls commercial and I think the name of the other store was Verns and of course there was the Elbow room, the notorious Eblow room. I have heard that it was voted the toughest bar in the US in a playboy mag. edition. There use to be old rusting trucks everywhere in Dutch and old abandoned buildings even on top of Ballyhoo like there was a city up there next to the huge gun turrets protecting the entrance to the harbor. I remember a time when a Russian fishing vessel had to come in to Dutch for a medial emergency and there were military everywhere. The Navy had a small fleet follow the vessel into the harbor, the air force landed a couple fighters, Coast Guard had there presence, it was quite an ordeal. In your video you named the island across from the end of the run way, Hog Island, I was wondering if know why it was called Hog Island?? I pretty much spent my summer childhood in Alaska so those are my memories as a kid and now at the age of 62 I am planning to make a trip back before my time is up.
I'm so glad this humble video could summon nostalgia for you; I'm grateful for your sharing your memories. I don't recall, exactly, the origins of Hog Island's name; I think I was told the Russians kept hogs on the island, back in the day. Thank you for watching, and for contributing.
Thanks for doing this. Very interesting.
Thank you Deb Schense, for sharing kind words and for watching.
Really cool stuff some amazing photos
Thank you!
Thoroughly enjoyed. Disabled now and the trip isn't likely, so thank you very much for taking me there.
Thank you for joining me.
I 've been to Dutch and Unalaska for an entire season in 2005. Was a bit tough to get used to, I had a chance to see sea lions, the beautiful nature etc.. I am pretty thankful to be living in a sunny warm country warm people etc..
I can't fathom such a transition. What incredible encounters with nature, it sounds like you had! Thank you for sharing!
I lived and worked there in '98. Some of my "fondest" memories took place at the elbow room lol!!!
Hahaha! Indeed. What an experience, though, you must have had, living and working there!
I enjoyed this: czcams.com/video/UOtpNX8581o/video.html
I live there for 2 years it was a beautiful place rain alot when I was there back 2011 2012
Hello, everyone. Due to the new policies issued by CZcams, this week, this channel is scheduled to be demonetized at the end of February, unless it can reach 1,000 subscribers. While I make videos for the pleasure of it, both as a creative outlet and as a way to share some of my chronicles, every little bit of income is, of course, helpful. I have appreciated those who have opted to join me, already; I would greatly appreciate and welcome new subscribers. I aim to continue evolving and growing as a channel. Thank you for your support and time.

Nice to see
I appreciate your kind words, Rudyson Estanislao. Thank you for watching.
To see is nice
My grandfather served in Alaska during WWII. Thank you for showing me a little bit of what he had seen!
My humble regards to you and your family, for his service. Thank you, so much, for sharing your personal connection to Dutch; I continue to learn about it.
I visited the WW2 remains of Ft. Schwatka, too, while there; in case he had detail there, on Mt. Ballyhoo, that you'd like to see, please visit this video: czcams.com/video/DmQeNdR0cOw/video.html
Holy hell. Like living on the moon.
lol i’ve lived here my whole life (a solid 16 years) and I can say that it definitely feels that way sometime. but this community is something special.
I'm in Dutch right now
Outstanding! I hope you're having a grand time, enjoying the beauty!
Hi Stephanie, it's so nice to run into people I know on here. :)
I'll be moving up to Dutch harbor to teach in August. Are there apartments for rent there or possible RV parks? I'm having a hard time finding anything
I don't know, directly. You could peruse the city's website for information or contact them to retrieve desired input: www.ci.unalaska.ak.us/
I wish you well on your move and your time there!
It is April 6, 2019 and it is snowing
How beautiful it must be! I can just imagine the quietness that a snow-filled sky lends, pierced by the occasional bald eagle cry. I can only imagine the crisp smell riding on the brisk wind. The sea and the peaks must be indescribable, right now. Thank you, James Fitch, for watching, and for igniting my imagination and nostalgia of the place.
looks almost identical to Iceland.
I came from memes and actually learned a lot from this like what it looks like. Beautiful place then again it is Alaska I imagine it looks like this is most of Alaska
