Just a correction. Anchorage is not the capital of Alaska but Juneau. Having lived there in Dutch Harbor and Alaska for the last 12 years, it has a beauty of its own. Dutch Harbor is where the commercial fishermen who goes out into the Bering Sea to go crab fishing leaves from there.

  • @johnhowell8228

I fished out of Dutch Harbor in the 90's. It was a great experience. Everything else in life has been easy after that. I wish I could share all of my experiences but it would take too long. It looks like Dutch has changed a lot. The one thing I try to describe to people that ask me about commercial fishing is the feeling of being in a quasi last frontier. Little, to no police. Ingenuity. Being rugged. Loneliness. Always longing for someone or something you miss. Dreaming about your future. It changes people.

Bro of mine used to talk about Dutch, he did the crab fishing thing for a few yrs to put self thru engineering college. Somehow a memorable scene.
They were once holed up with a number of other fishing boats in a remote natural harbor to ride out a killer storm, 2 of the boats letting cabin fever get the best of them, were talking on the radio about leaving for open ocean, going home, while other captains tried to dissuade them, "We won't be coming to save you as we will die with you if we do." 2 boats left anyway, hours later radioing distress calls, they were getting severely iced up and ready to capsize. At some point you can't break ice off fast enough from superstructure and the boat is simply doomed to roll over. Not sure if any were rescued but many died.
On average one boat per yr was lost out of Dutch a few decades ago, I assume it's better by now.

Really nice video work! I spent seven years on a research ship with the federal government studying mainly migratory seabirds but pretty much everything else, too. The Aleutian people's culture, whales, sea lions, archaeological digs, the effect of foxes on the ecosystem of the islands, even some military research. Like the people interviewed said, the weather is king. It dictates what you do in almost every aspect of your life here. I was lucky enough to have visited over eighty five islands in the years there, all the way out to Attu at the end of the chain. Besides the daily work ( I was one of two deckhands on the ship in a crew of six) we hiked everywhere, took pictures and video, worked alongside biologists and even got in a day or two of water skiing each season!
I often think of the Aleutians as a cross between Ireland and the moon. Oh and Eva, Anchorage isn't the capital of Alaska, Juneau is.

Can we all appreciate the fact that Eva never disappointed us with her content. 🤗🥰🤚
By the way, may I also remind you the fact that our Native American population in our motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions.
Today, Native American population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering TWO BILLION! A shocking sad truth. 😔
In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners Native American people.
Notorious global cardinal crimes the Christian West has committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 😔

Great video Eva! If someone goes on a cruise ship, they get off the ship someplace and spend a few hours then back on the ship they go and don't get a feel of the people or culture of where they just visited. You did a great job explaining the past and the present and the personal experiences of the locals that live there. I think most people that watch this video will feel like they've already been there. Thanks again Eva.

Beautiful adventure here in this video, not surprisingly coming from you. The Aleutian Islands were on the news last week due to Russia and China, which had 11 warships patrolling and conducting military exercise very near International waters. Very close to Alaska/Aleutian Islands. So our Navy sent, very quickly, four of our destroyer ships to keep an eye out on the activity. So besides weather, solitude, and all else brought up in your video in this beautiful, majestic landscape, there's that too.
