11pm on a summer night in Unalaska Alaska - Eagles in the back yard

  • One of the major summertime events for the locals in Unalaska Alaska is to catch the Red Salmon when they are returning to spawn. My Unangan neighbors just caught a bunch and in the process of cleaning the fish a bunch of eagles showed up to fight over the remains.

I don't know what I find more fascinating about this video: the fact that there are so many bald eagles in one place at once or that it's daylight at 11pm. That's so foreign to us in the lower 48... Great video!

Not anywhere along the same latitudes, Nortern Europe it all unfolds the same. Quite the thing to experience, the higher the latitudes, the more darkness and light you get in the Summer and Winter.

I remember visiting Alaska around august of 2013 and the pure amazement at how it was still daylight out at 10pm at night and when the sun went down at 12 it was literally still dusk out and never completely dark.. I loved it!

This video is amazing. I just recently just moved to Eielson AFB, AK. I was born and raised in Panama City, FL. A couple weeks ago it got up to 40 or so and I started to see the grass around that time. I never would have imagined I would think 40 degrees felt WARM. My husband and everyone else around me here is dreading all daylight, but I'm absolutely looking forward to it; if I'm going to have a change of scenery, I want it COMPLETELY different than what I've spent 21 years in. Lol.

Beautiful!! I live on the Alabama gulf coast and we have a pair of Bald Eagles who have returned to their nest at the Gulf State Park. Not sure where they have been, but they have a baby on the way!! It was reported in the local newspaper that their baby from the last hatching is still around, although I've never seen it, or any of them, except in print or on the news. The amount of eagles in this video is awesome!! I would love to see just ONE, and there are at least 20 right in front of you...thank you so much for sharing!

Jennifer in the northern most parts of Alaska they have 24 hour days in the Summer! In other words the sun never sets. During the winter its a different story, the northern most parts of the state have 24 hour nights. Cities like Fairbanks have sunset at 12:20 am and sunrise at 2:45 in the summer, winter sunrise is 11:00 am and sunset 2:30 pm.

Unalaska lies at roughly the same latitude as Manchester, England, which certainly doesn't remain light at 11pm. The reason why it's light at this time in Unalaska is because the Alaskan timezone is a few hours ahead of what would be expected, meaning that sunrise, solar noon and sunset are all a few hours later than what would be seen at the same latitude in Canada and Europe.
