- You've probably seen it on Deadliest Catch (or some other TV show) or heard about it, but have you ever wondered what it looks like? As the epicenter for Bering Sea fisheries, this small town out in the Aleutian Island chain has a large impact on the Alaskan economy.
Filmed on location in Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska.

I worked there for 20 years. It has really changed.
It was 15 years between visits and the changes seemed pretty subtle to me. It's something that I like about Dutch.
I worked there when I was 19 years old back in 1999 C season
Watching this brings tears to my eyes for some reason.
What a time it was 😌
Unisea Inc 1999 C season
I lived here when I was a kid, my dad was mayor for some time and seeing this video choked me up making me realize just how much I miss it. I can't thank you enough for making this video. You've no idea how much it means to me. Thank you immensely and I hope to see more from Dutch Harbor. Sincerely, Kevin
Wow! Great to hear this video made your day! It's an interesting place. My first visit was in January 2004 and the next was 2019. 15 years in between but the place seemed almost the same. Hopefully you can get back up there soon.
I just came from Dutch Harbor, it actually sold right when I was leaving it’s closed now and so is the pho joint in Unalaska
Take medicine.
@@joseleon559 what sold?
@@georgeallred4617 that Mexican restaurant
Elbow Room ? 😂 lots of good times there .
I never made it over there. I've heard stories though!
@@serenitynow2481 made it in playboy magazine as one of the rowdiest Bars in the 🇺🇸 ! 😂
I left Dutch Harbor 10 years ago, there is something that is drawing me back...I have to go and I will
That's awesome. Best of luck with that adventure!
I live there for three months when I was 34.good and lovely people.
Very neat! Thanks for watching
I lived there for 3 years when I was in early 40's.
I miss so much. I live in Japan now.
I want to visit someday.
Morio
Thanks for watching. Hopefully you can get back soon. Japan is pretty awesome too
Paved roads? A Safeway? You got by the Grand Aleutian without getting a shot of the falls across the bay? Dutch Harbor hath been tamed.
Just a snapshot! Thanks for watching!
Something about that place makes me want to visit it. Maybe it's the peace and calmness. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
I worked for Westward and Icicle 2005-2015 Dutch Harbor...my thumb nail here is me returning 2015 getting my landlegs, was on an atsea processor 9months
Commercial fishing is hard work. Bering sea fisheries kicks that up a notch in my opinion.
@@serenitynow2481 That 9 months was my last year to prove to myself I won. people do not know what it takes.
Very nice. Thanks for sharing this experience with us.
Thank you for watching!
What a peaceful place....
It definitely can be!
What a lovely beautiful town ❤️❤️
Thanks for watching!
I can't believe believe I'm moving there. Permanent relocation the sexiest two words I have ever heard. Humbled like no other.
Congratulations!
Im glad you mentioned the pillowboxes because i did see a few. A good place to take a nap or something?
They're probably not the most comfortable place to take a nap! Haha
Was there building houses in 1985, wow how it changed! Want to go back, soon!
Thanks for the comment. Very cool
1990-2000. The island is beautiful. But that’s it!
Haha. I enjoyed my brief port calls. Kudos to you and everyone else that calls (called) it home.
I was there June 1999 to September 1999 Unisea Inc
Don't know what it is about this place, I spent a day walking around from a cruise ship a year or two ago. Why am I looking at videos to relive the experience? There is something special about feeling so remote from the rest of the world, you feel like you could escape here from the tsunami of crap that is that is engulfing the western world.
You're 100% right. It's definitely remote. Haha. Thank you for watching and sharing your experience there.
I don't watch Deadliest Catch or any of this BS reality TV. I'm researching the WW2 history of the Aleutians campaign and this footage is incredible, and I love this down and dirty style! Subscribed!
Thank you very much. Dutch Harbor has some good WW2 pill boxes. They also have a museum near the airport.
Say what you want about any other so called reality tv - BS? Probaby - But - watch one or a few - that aint no odinary show and no BS - you dont get any more real than out on the Bering Sea - theres no hollywood effects nor doubles - its fishing and the Bering for real and unforgiving - and you obviousy never been to Dutch nor fished or offshore high latitudes - there's a reason- a few- that fishing in the Bering is one the toughest most dangerous jobs on the planet - I fished a few seasons longlining and few as fisheries observer - and it was no mean feat for the camera guys to ride along especially rough winter weather and took the same chance as crew that if shit hits the fan - you might not come back ...and thats no BS - so you might want reevaluate your BS opinion about something you dont have a clue - watch a show or two and go up hike the pilĺboxes or better yet go out as a processor and get to know the "BS" up close 😏
I miss Dutch , the Mexican food , what yup not bad pretty good. I worked at the the Grand Hotel , now we put out some great food . ya know there was not much to do in Dutch Harbor , I am thankful to have gone up there and say yes i did .
Oh yeah! Right there with ya.
What year?
There are a lot of full sized vans in Dutch Harbor it seems.
Haha. For sure. The volume of non-resident workers requires bulk transport to get from A to B.
Miss this place. Is Amelia's restaurant still in the green building after passing Safeway? I had the best omelette I've ever tasted there, mushroom and monterey jack, and an excellent portion that covered my plate!
Oh yeah that's still it. We tend to go there for the milkshakes, but their food is good too!
I've just came back from Unalaska to Czech Republic and yes, Amelia's is still there and omelettes are still great
Safeway was called Eagle when I was there and yes they did serve some of the best omelettes I have ever had
@@ricknelson4764 how long ago was that? I was there in 2004 and I think that's the store I bought some items at.
My first time in Dutch Harbor was 1970 Torgy
Wow! Change much? Haha. Between my first time there in 2004 and last time 2020 they added 1 bar and a Safeway from what I could tell.
My first visit there 1994.
More pillboxes than trees
They also say there's a girl behind every tree out there too...
Man, you missed the Rat!
I missed this comment too apparently! I originally planned on adding it in, but it didn't flow as well. They've got great food. Valhalla Pizza for me please!
I live in Alaska and really want to go there for a week with my wife. Are there any restaurants and coffee shops, tourist attractions?
There are some historical things to see such as the WW2 museum and there are a couple bunker hikes. Not sure about the cost to get out there, but I'm sure you could have some fun for a few days. The Grand Aleutian has an excellent Sunday Brunch.
Good to know! Thanks for your comment.
Nope, just Elbow rooms. Uh they have lattes and stores.
@@bob4811 how much lucky you are !! Is this town near Shetland ?
Does anyone know the music being played during the beginning ?
It's royalty free music. The link to "bensounds" is in the video description.
what camera did you use?
Just used my phone for filming. I have a nikon D750 for the thumbnail
I live here
It's a great little town
How can I visit there from India ? Is it cheap or costly town?
That'd be a long trip. An expensive one too. Prices in town aren't bad, but they aren't cheap either.
@@serenitynow2481 ok thanks for reply I will search about this beautiful town .
I went up there with 5$ in my pocket. I'm one of the people that made out great. Probably because I'm a good Carpenter and the word got out. The people are great for the most part. Be prepared to work your butt off.
Thanks for watching. It's definitely a place where hard work is rewarded.
Ha ha, i call bs!
How can I go there to work from Vietnam?
Not exactly sure, but the first step is probably US work visas. Good luck!
@@serenitynow2481 Have a job arranged before you move there. Do not go to look in person!!
