i think max ostro played a cooler solo than this
I think Max Ostro's wasn't improvised like Guthrie's. Max's solo is cooler but this Guthrie solo is still wild being that it's straight off the dome.
Max Ostro is an alien from another planet. There's no way a 15 year old kid can be that damn good. I'd put that kid up again Via or Guvan or Malmsteen any day of the week....
Max Ostro can shred fast as hell, but at the end of the day, I can’t really think of a lot of memorable lines and licks from him. And tone wise, It’s a lot of compression, not enough dynamic at my taste.
Guthrie has real sense of progression in his improvisations, and is very polyvalent in his use of the instrument, technics, styles, references and melodic ideas.
That’s why I can listen to him for hours, while only one or two song from Ostro or people like Greg Howe.
Max Ostro wrote most of his solo before the recording session. Guthrie was shown the chart right in the spot before recording, this is a TRUE improvisation.

Max is the most memorable guitarist I’ve ever heard and I have every one of his solos memorized because I’ve listened to them probably over a 1000 times. I definitely find your comment puzzling. I guess it’s just a matter of different taste. 🤷♂️
Do u know the changes?
no but ill get them for you.
This is a crucial video: it shows us that Max Ostro is indeed steps ahead of Guthrie. Max's solo rides those chords in a sublime way, truly stellar. Guthrie is playing a ton of licks and riffs just looking for the best melody, but he does not find it. Yes, Max designed his up front, I'm sure. Sorry, Guthrie, you missed the boat here.
The difference between improvising on the spot and having weeks to prepare something is crucial. I'm sure Guthrie could prepare something as good as Max's take, and I'm sure that max wouldn't improvise on the spot as well as Guthrie on most backing tracks. I do love what Max did with this track, it's the best thing I heard from him by far.
@@ohadcohen2but Max has improvised everything since 2020 and many even before that. Even if some are not “on the spot”, he has stated that he will just improvise a few and pick his favorite. Same thing many guitarist do. Eddie did that with “beat it”. He made up 3 solos on the spot and Michael Jackson picked the one he liked best. It’s STILL an improvised solo that was made on the spot any way you slice it. Having said that, I enjoy all of Max’s improvisations over Guthrie’s and I believe Max would’ve delivered something a little more tasteful than what Guthrie did here. Just my opinion on the matter. 🤷🏻♂️
@@ohadcohen2 plus, JTC specifically says in the comment section of “remember when” that Guthrie improvises a few takes and they pick a favorite. He literally does EXACTLY what Max and a million other guitarists have done. EVH was doing it in the 70’s. I will admit Guthrie is “as good” as Max but no one will ever convince me he’s better.
Bro they are both amazing guitarists and have different takes on the track as different players.. Music is not a competition jeez
You are jumping to conclusions… as some already explained it’s a quite different exercise, this is played and improvised live… if you listen to Max playing live, compared with a studio take from Guthrie you will get the same kind of gap… but it is not a competition, both guitarists are exceptional musicians with insane guitar skills.
