      Not just Knopfler. He basically nailed all of them, except for maybe Hendrix and King, and just because of lack of rhythm playing and off tone. Govan is just... i can even... this guy is... someone else please just finish the sentence. I clearly can't.

      Disagree, it sounds like a virtuoso imitating Knopfler, which is what it is. Does not get the microdynamics and the unique post-bend vibrato. I'm sure he could if that were the focus, but any DS fan can tell that's not Knopfler.

  • @DannyJamesGuitar
    @DannyJamesGuitar Před 9 lety +604

    Just to clarify... This was a job Guthrie did for a guitar magazine. The magazine had a poll for the public to vote on the best guitarist in 20 different categories. They then asked Guthrie if he could make a piece of music that had a little bit of playing based on the style of the winner from each category. If you look in the description of the video you can see the category and the winner.
    Just thought I'd mention that to answer the questions like "Where's guitarist x" etc...

    • @wea69420
      @wea69420 Před 8 lety +85

      +Orange Fender He outplays them. Is he more influential? hell no, I knew all those guys way before I heard about Guthrie, yet he can play circles around any guitarist I've heard of, from this list or anywhere else and also remain musical while doing it. Will he ever appear as important as the guys on the list? probably not. Does he deserve it? yes. He has an understanding deep enough of music to be able to identify what makes every guitarist's style and apply it to his own playing, but I still know it's him. Doing that is far harder than it seems.

    • @gibsonflyingv2820
      @gibsonflyingv2820 Před 8 lety +11

      Do you honestly believe that any of the guitarists on this list who have been playing for longer than this guy has even existed are incapable of doing the same thing? He does not out play them. He down plays them if anything, covering a persons guitar work that they invented will never be "outplaying them" especially since if not for them he wouldn't be playing anything your argument is invalid. This guys technically skilled but has no soul. Sorry.

      GuitarPanda but the thing is about mastery. In guitar it is not necessary that if u can play everythin or not, the thing that matters is if u have mastered a thing to the fullest or not and can apply to amaze people and then become a virtuoso with it. Hence considering all this i feel that Guthrie is more of a teacher rather than a virtuoso.

    at this point in Guthrie's career, you can't even say that he's not right up there with Gambale and Holdsworth. Even if you don't like his music, you can't deny his ability to combine every style as well as every technique. He's mastered tapping and shredding just as much as jazz and blues. AND, the biggest and of all, he still keeps it musical and plays simple, melodic licks. If you're a true musician, you can't deny GG's skill even if you're not a fan.

    • @user-ov5nd1fb7s
      @user-ov5nd1fb7s Před rokem +1

      No one can deny he is a good musician and a great rock guitarist.
      What can easily be denied is him being up there with Holdsworth, and even Gambale for various reasons.
      He doesn't have even 10% of Holdsworth's harmonic depth and improvisational skills, nor the body of work or originality Holdsworth has. He is not even in the same genre. Nor he is in the same genre as Gambale, but i would admit closer to his level than Holdsworth. Gambale has been hanging in with the greats of Jazz for 30 years, like Chick Corea. Gambale only makes rock records for fun. I don't see Guthrie having the improvisational skills and harmonic depth to make it in a band with Chick Corea. End of story.

      The best guitarists (or bands) write stuff that grabs the public's attention, like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Aerosmith, etc. It's not about technical proficiency, so much as it is finding riffs that resonate with people. Extreme technical accuracy or mimicing note-for-note is almost a pointless exercise in a way, because it won't make you rich or famous, or make people happy, unless there is original heartfelt composition behind it.

Come on, for me, and a lot of forum people, he's one of the best fussion players we've ever heard, he has created a whole new style of playing, mixing fussion into progressive rock is an amazing achievement, the use of any mode at anytime over any chords just blows my mind every day, i mean, listen to fives, or erotic cakes, he is the master on any kind of music he wants to people, for me, the best guitar player alive
