The issue with guys who have great or phenomenal chops is lack of innovation or originality.. A sideman can play any style because he's primarily a session guitarist but usually does not innovate or create great songs his or herself .. are instrumental grooves that showcase great chops great songs ? I dunno .. An artist who's a guitarist focuses more on creativity and writing great songs so rare if ever does the artist have chops on the level of a great sideman.. Guthrie's skill set is off the charts

I'm new to Guthrie but his talents are off the charts. I would like to hear him do his version of Carlos Santana and George Benson. Especially Benson's Live version of the song Take 5.

And just like that, when you see Guthrie Govan struggling to come up with anything even remotely approaching any of his iconic riffs, it becomes clear how creative and original The Edge is really is ;)

Fun! He was best on the speed finger players of course. And he nails Knopfler. BB is purer than that, Beck's right hand is much different. Gotta assume that's Scofield so he goes slightly out. Reminds me of Guitar Jamboree by Spedding.

All mimics are good with the exception of Jeff Beck and John Scofield. Those don’ get even close. Well, both players (JB and Sco) are really impossible to copy, even being as good as you GG.

Guthrie is an emulator pure & simple.And that is a great feat and way of developing ones own voice.He has no originality but will make a great guitar teacher.

We know that Guthrie can play in any genre and mimic any player. But it's interesting to me that he left Hendrix till last, and it's the least convincing. He knows the Hendrix vocabulary, and obviously he has technique to spare, but I've heard more convincing tones and phrasing from far less able players. It would be interesting to hear him tackle Jimi again in 2023.

He sounds much more mechanical that the people he’s imitating.

I simply don't understand why people keep talking about Tom Morello and his annoying guitar sounds... all the rest guitar players of the list, and of course, Guthrie Govan, are amazing. But there should be some kind of law not allowing anyone to talk about Tom Morello... 😀

Honestly this is the worst sounding music Guthrie has ever made. It’s impressive, but it sounds horrible and is totally directionless. It definitely shows how versatile he is. With a lot of these guitarists he plays their own style better than they do.
