As much as I am greatly impressed,and I wish I could shred like the best (Gilbert,vai,howe..etc..) I just don't see shred as music.its mundane and annoying to the ear.i know these guys are excellent players and have worked hard at being great,but I just can't get into the shred aspect.i do know that guitarists are shying away from the shredding and playing more melodic,harmony based music.i like simple,feel and soulful music.stuff that's pleasing to the ear and musical soul.i am am intermediate guitar playing.i have been playing 40 years and I can play fast legato runs,tremolo picking..etc..and I can learn just about any song.but I lack the ability to take it to the next level like these virtuoso 's.i am no good at sweep picking and advanced tapping.i never really wanted to put the time into learning it.its just an opinion.i am sure alot of guitarists will disagree with me,but remember.i did say that these shredders are the best and awesome at what they do.its just not my cup of tea.

The track is not really very Larry Carlton; it's more Robben than Larry if anything. Pretty standard Cm blues/R&B thing with an altered V chord.

These exercises are great but without the knowledge of modes/scales, a regular guitar player in a bedroom is probably seeing this as memorizing a bunch of tabs and licks...He has a unique way of incorporating sildes to get across the fingerboard and i feel that is not highlighted enough. Its presented as seperate groupings of notes...theres so much Music Theory (chord progressions/arpeggios/scales/modes) and Guitar Theory (3nps/4nps, legato etc) all behind what he is playing that is implied, but not expressly instructed. It's funny that all this Advanced stuff is behind his playing, and he begins with the most basic of basic "Welp, Lets Tune Up!" Theres just no way that when he is playing , he is thinking on such micro terms like "First D, then C, then B on the high E string, then silde my index!" its just too microscopic and laborious. The thought patterns have to come out as a lump sum >"Shred A Minor Mode beginning on 9th Scale degree" Im sure beginners can pull knowledge from this, but truly this is for Intermediate>Advanced players. It's funny how its presented to beginners.
