A bit of confusion in the comments. ED Sheeran wrote THE WHOLE SONG! By himself. He [gave] it to Justin who made ADJUSTMENTS. Those slight adjustments are why he's a "co-writer". In an interview with Grime entertainer Stormzy he stated that he heard Ed sing that song from Ed way before Justin released it.

I think where confusion lies is in the fact that Ed wrote it for his own album, then decided against it, and gave it to Bieber. Bieber, Sheeran, and Benny Blanco then refined it further, with Bieber and Blanco getting a writing credit as well for the final product. That's what I read anyway, about how the song in its final version came to be.
