What are the geopolitical implications of India's success in space? | DW News

  • India has launched its first space mission to study the sun. The Aditya L1 spacecraft will travel to the outermost part of the sun's orbit. Its aim is to record data that will help scientists to understand how massive explosions of solar gases happen, and and how they impact the Earth. The mission is due to take around 5 years.
    That means India's last two space missions have been successful. Both missions are different, technically difficult missions. Do they proove that India is now among the leaders in space exploration?
    Both China and India are rising military and economic powers. They regularly clash on their shared border, and both countries have very ambitious space programs. Will this rivalry in space change their relationship on the ground?
    Some discoveries in space affect the way we live on earth, but how much of space exploration is really about politics, bravado and flexing on the world stage?

    China doesn't openly share its data with other space agencies, India does. For India, it's not really a race. It's a way to keep improving ourselves and help others with our learnings. So let's not try to push India in this so-called space race.

      We Indians are in a race. All are. In 2012 China's 'Yinghuo-1' Mars mission failed and this promoted Manmohan Singh to ask ISRO if we can succeed in the same Mars mission. Once he was given a positive reply from ISRO, he sanctioned money for Mars mission, which happened in 2014.
      So, yes, we are in a race and we will do one-upmanship, but not brinkmanship, like Russians did this time and Soviets prior to that.

      @@KwippyIndia has both rich people and poor people. India has very intelligent people and very dumb people too. In India, there is a place for everyone. ISRO makes sure the very intelligent section remain in the country. India doesn't have to wait till it make the dumb people, intelligent or poor people, rich. Everyone grows accordingly.
      Also, your comment is quite lame, government already spends too much on public welfare, there re thousands of schemes.
      Apart from that, the money on which ISRO does this, is quite low as compared to other agencies.
      What's the benefit??
      Government provides money to Isro for running it's operations. If in future, mining becomes possible or any other thing, then ISRO might be able to make money and run it's operations on its own. That would definitely save the already tiny amount of money government of India spends on ISRO, which in turn would be used then used to fund more schemes on the poor.

      India's space exploration is of great importance in the context of the geopolitics of this century.
      India was denied access to GPS during the Kargil war by the west. Later we developed satellites capable of doing that. West always allied with countries supporting terrorism.
      ISRO returned roughly 5 times returns to the amount spend on the organization.
      Around 500 television channels broadcast through our satellites,
      Indias defense capability of monitoring the rogue neighbors and missile guidance depends on the satellites
      Satellites helps in education reaching rural population through satellites, weather forecasting, disaster management etc
      Our ATM transactions happen though the satellites
      Our stock trading happens through the satellites
      Fisherman get information about the availability of fish in the sea
      We launch foreign satellites through our rockets and earn money out of it.

    Events like this really shine a light on the absolutely stunning achievement of the Apollo Program and the Moon landings from 1969-1972. Watched a documentary on Apollo 8 recently, which was the first manned spaceflight to leave Earth's gravitational pull to orbit the Moon. Just fascinating, more so when you learn how they did it, how each component was developed and tested. The single greatest engineering accomplishment in history.

    "There are some who question the relevance of space activities in a developing nation. To us, there is no ambiguity of purpose. We do not have the fantasy of competing with the economically advanced nations in the exploration of the moon or the planets or manned space-flight.
    But we are convinced that if we are to play a meaningful role nationally, and in the community of nations, we must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems of man and society."

    We launch foreign satellites through our rockets and earn money out of it.

      It's not really about India. It's more about Russia and China. I'm pretty sure there wouldn't have been any such focus on India, had there not been a war with Russia where India stayed neutral and where Russia's lander crashed. They are highlighting India's achievement as an insult to slap Russia and to show that 'even India can now do things better than Russia'. It's honestly a very backhanded 'compliment' to India and I'm glad that Indians pushed back on the narrative in the comments of every segment that tried to paint as if 'Russia and India was in a race'. Its an attempt to drive a wedge between India and Russia as well as trying to prop up India as their relation with China has soured.
      They know very well that India is militarily and geographically very important to check China. There is no other country in Asia with the same space capability as India and they are partnering with India on space sector to develop our capabilities as well as get into contracts to use each other facilities, because all of it, along without navigation satellites, anti spy satellites are all imperative to monitor and restrict Chinese movement, especially naval movement in India ocean.
      And it's standard practice in West to create 'manufactured consent' with media before they involve with any major geopolitical move.
      Most of the western countries have a very contradictory relationship with India as their defense see India as a partner (because China) but most of their government apparatus is very often in conflict with Indian government because of our protectiveness to local economy as well as the because of having a very unrelatable culture, however the same governments, until recently were pretty much a brethren to China because of their cheap manufacturing and shipping. In such a scenario, they need this media prepping for furthering ties and partnerships with India.
      PS. I'm obviously not talking about the scientific community in any countries, but about the government and media apparatus

    Gaganyan and Indian space station are the main event.
    These all, shukrayan, mangalyan 2, LUPEX, SPADEX, NGLV etc etc are side quest.
    But the boss fight, will be indians on moon, which has been hinted to happen around 2035. It is garuntee that a manned moon mission will happen in the future, but the dates are tentitive, probably cost boundings.

    • @death_parade
      @death_parade Před 9 měsíci

      Can tell you that it won't happen by 2035. For Moon landing, we need a superheavy lift rocket. None of the rockets ISRO has ever considered seriously have belonged to this category. And now, the bar has moved higher. Now, India must first finish its current target of NGLV by 2030 and then immediately start working on a new much more powerful methalox engine than the LM-100. This engine when developed (maybe by around 2039) should then be used to develop a new superheavy lift rocket that is equivalent to the Starship, not the Saturn V or SLS. If we manage to achieve that by mid-2040s, we might see Indian gagannauts landing on the Moon on India's 100th Independence Day.
      That is the most realistic timeline. Unless there arises a political/military need to hasten the development of a Starship-class rocket.

    • @rickgolder6818
      @rickgolder6818 Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@death_parade dont think so.
      The NGLV will be developed by 2028-29, cause if it won't, it would take a serious amount of missions to build a space station without a heavy lift rocket. So we can count that NGLV will be completed by 2030.
      And it will be enough for the starter moon landing. Yes not like building a base there, that will have to wait another 5-10 years, till ISRO made another reusable super heavy launch rocket. But the thing is, ISRO is already working on prototypes of these all kind of rockets. Even a reusable one.
      So by 2035 india will have all the means for a manned moon landing. Since NGLV is enough to carrying them to the moon.

    • @death_parade
      @death_parade Před 9 měsíci

      @@rickgolder6818 Bruh, NGLV is what, 20 tons to LEO (if we are being optimistic)? Not enough to even launch a single part of a Lunar ship.
      We can't cheap out on delta V of the rocket in a Moon Mission. The payloads will be humans this time. Can't really take the slow route like Chandrayaan-2 and 3 did. We need TLI direct. And TLI payload capacity of NGLV won't even be enough for a human lander, forget a crew and service module.
      We need at least 75 tons to LEO rocket and ideally 150 tons to LEO rocket.

    • @rickgolder6818
      @rickgolder6818 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@death_parade bruh, NGLV will be able to send payload from 4tons to 16 tons to GTO, and above 23-24 tons to LEO. Yes the Saturn V, which took the Apollo, was a more powerful rocket (could carry above 40tons to GTO). But that was because the systems and computers were much more bigger and heavier than what we have today. So a big amount of space was taken due to those.
      Also, the chinese are planing to send Humans to moon by 2030. And the interesting point is that they are going to use there Long Mach 5 rocket (current most powerful rocket of china), which can carry around 14 tons to GTO and around 20tons to LEO. Even there improved Long Mach 5B can carry only around 25 ton to LEO and around 16 tons to GTO. Significantly less than the american ones. And the Long Mach 10, which was initially thought of using in the manned moon mission is not going to be used, since it will take much more time for china to develope a super heavy lift rocket.
      So how are they gonna do it ? Well they are gonna use two rockets, one will be carrying the humans, and other one will carry the lander. They are gonna use one rocket to go to the moon, and one for the return trip. Atleast thats what they are currently saying, and thats also seems likely, since long Mach 10 will take some time.
      India could do a similar approach, and use two NGLV mk2s to go and come back. Its tricky but not impossible. And I believe thats what they are gonna do .

    India don't want to be in competition to do something sake of it..every mission has a scientific purpose. Once we have the capability n learnings..it's easy to launch bigger mission or partner with nasa esa jaxa..we don't want a space station as already there are two..look to land n observe all possible outerspace with many smaller missions..

    Brah! Space is so vast, it isn't a zero sum game as someone said. Infact I suspect as the space exploration gets more and more intense with more players around the world, the lesser the differences between us on this planet gets.

    ISRO POWER-
    The definitive discovery of Moon water came in 2008, when India's space agency ISRO launched the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft to lunar orbit.
    In the realm of space exploration, ISRO has accomplished an extraordinary feat by engineering intricate solutions to make space endeavors cost-effective. Notably, ISRO stands as the pioneering space agency to achieve a successful moon landing at the southern pole and a remarkable first-time voyage to Mars.
    That is the power of India. Many so-called developed nations that running on Indian blood and Indian money can’t even launch a single rocket from their surface. Jai Hind,Jai Bharati
