Today’s listening exercise is a chance for you to learn the history of Portugal’s national music and get to know the fantastic Portuguese musicians Rodrigo da Costa Felix and Luis Guerreiro (Spoiler alert: they perform a beautiful fado song at the end of the video, stay tuned!). What a gift Liz. Obrigada! Listening to a 29 year old Mariza being interviewed on NPR in Los Angeles, back in 2003, was my first introduction to Fado, and put Portugal on the map for me.
When I first arrived in Portugal last October I was in Coimbra. I went to a Fado show the first night, and was enthralled.
Listening to Luis Guerrerio tonight was such a treat. ❤️

As a huge fan of Fado Luís Guerreiro for me is the best Portuguese Guitarist ever. He expresses like no other, lives the music he plays. Well done Luís Guerreiro. Yes he plays with some of the best Fado singers but he sings with his Portuguese Guitar just as well if not better. Just started to learn Portuguese 3 months ago. I can only understand half of the lyrics but that's enough to appreciate the grandeur of the Fado, beauty of Portuguese and Portugal. Thank for this wonderful video .

Portugal is my home now, near to Ansião. So many things I love about Portugal and fado is very high on my list. Great video, adore the history, the stories from Rodrigo and Luis, such passion. When next we are in Lisbon a visit to Fado ao Carmo is a must.
Loved this Liz and in Malta our traditional music is called Ghanja and although sounds nothing like the Fado it is made up on the spot and from the heart just like the Fado

Beautiful video, Liz. It kind of reminds me of Greece. In Greece we have this instrument called the μπουζούκι/bouzouki. It’s similar to that guitar! I may go to Portugal this year.

Hi Liz! Yes! My favourite fado singer is Ana Moura. Also, thank you for this listening exercise! It is fantastic practice! Currently doing A1/A2 via the IC in Toronto, Canada - and I'm listening and transcribing this listening exercise as practice without the aid of the closed captions. Great training for the ears! Thanks for all the work you are doing here! It reinforces what I've learned in class and dusts off the sounds of speech I would have heard when I was a child.

Fado is synonymous with Lisbon (and Coimbra although slightly different) it’s not a song of Portugal as a whole.

Bom vídeo, gosto muito de fado. Interessante é que o Rodrigo Félix fala claramente duas vezes a palavra “liverdade”. No espanhol, tudo bem, mas eu nunca havia escutado a troca do B pelo V no português.
A troca dos b pelos v’s é algo lisboeta por excelência. Forma os povos lisboetas que não conseguiam pronunciar tão bem os b, e trocavam por v. Contudo, Lisboa sempre foi uma cidade de fluxo, e muitas influências do norte existiram, e após a união ibérica os espanhóis deixaram sua marca. Mas um lisboeta raiz mesmo, acima de 30 anos, vai aqui e ali trocar o b pelo v. Fenômeno contrário ocorre no Porto. Curiosamente, em Portugal, a palavra “covarde”, ou “taverna”, com “v”, está recentemente a ser mais escrita com b, só não sei se é uma vitória do Porto ou dos castelhanos mesmo e a influência absurdo que têm sobre a cultura portuguesa.

Fado is Lisbon culture, not Portugal. To be honest there are other rhythms that are more traditional and "synonym" with Portugal for example "o vira" from norther Portugal.
