👍
I am regular viewer......You are doing fabulous work.
Graça 22... This is fabulous as is the restaurant.
Does Cheryl have a CZcams channel ?
On alheira you are pronouncing a- lh-i-eira. Drop the i and for the lh crunch up the tongue and put it on the roof of your mouth. Great pronunciation on the nasal sounds on
The opções, s at the end of croquetes! Fabulous!!!
That was so much fun! Thank you so much for helping me with my pronunciations! And thank you for the tips on how to practically use portuguese when I am out and about and need the time to turn on my portuguese speaking brain. You are amazing!
Woohooo this is just the beginning for you, you are going to do so well! Thank you for being up for the challenge!
Cheryl, you did great. Your pronunciation is good. That lh combination and ei like in alheira is a tough one and those combinations are frequent in the language. It's one that I still find to be a bit of a challenge. If we keep at it though, our pronunciation will definitely improve.
Well done Cheryl🙌. We really value the effort, don't give up you will get there your pronunciation is good already.
Cheryl , I’m also learning European Portuguese and even with my French language background , I still have problems with the Portuguese genders.
I know you have a TikTok channel but please start a CZcams channel , you have a great personality and good knowledge of Portugal .
Whoohooo!! Loved watching you order everything in Portuguese!! 🎉❤️
Just a hint: when a portuguese 'asks' the end of the sentence goes up in the entonation. If not is affirmetive. Also we use very much the particle "é que" then, if you want to ask "o que contém" the way we construct the sentence will be "o que é que contém ?" or, better "que ingredientes tem?" Also we do not say "contem produtos de animais?" rather "contem produtos animais?" About vegan/vegetarian you must refer to a subject in the sentence. If you miss to mention to whom the sentence refers to, the person you are talking to will be confused unless you already made clear you are the vegan/vegetarian or any other attribute as it may be. Then you should say "eu sou vegana/vegetariana [ gorda / magra // alta/baixa]", etc. There is always a 'problem' with the sound "lh" when non portuguese speakers use it. Try not to insert a "i" in the middle. As pronounced what we hear is "alhieira" not "alheira". You are making difficult, easy things ! Regardless all the above I should consider you one of the best foreigner teacher, with a very good portuguese "music" whenever you speak. Congrats for your work and I hope your students realise you is the best teacher they could find to learn a not so easy language.
I was about to comment on the "lh" sound, but the comment above is spot on. No "i" in lh. Same goes for "nh" sound
Liz, you are such a great teacher. Encouraging and kind with so many useful, practical tips. Bravo to Cheryl for having the courage to share her language-learning journey. She'll be fluent in no time!
Omgomg as soon as she said “I’m vegan” I was SO HAPPY!!! Headed to Portugal for the first time next week. THANK YOU!!!
This was such a great video, as a portuguese I felt so glad when she order her food so well in portuguese, it was so cute! Kudos to you Liz, you're doing a terrific job. :D
You are professional teacher full of wisdom on how to make other more understand so good luck.
Thank you!
Some Input: When I moved to Portugal, the situations in which I needed to learn Portuguese quickly were buying food in the supermarket (ordering fish from the fish monger with specific instructions , understanding vocabulary of food items, the weight scale, what ticket to pick at the ticket screen for meat, etc), checking in at the emergency room (the receptionist did not speak English), instructions for the hair dresser (no English) , bike repair shop and making phone calls to set up appointments (covid test, doctors, bike shop…), conversing with new neighbors , asking questions to the mail delivery staff, etc. . Most language videos on CZcams often reduce the learning to restaurant or cafe situations, which is just one tiny aspect of the challenges a new language beginner faces.
Thanks for this it is all on the list! We are looking forward to restrictions lifting more and more so we can film in more places ☺️ I do have a video on the hairdresser already, you should check it out!
That was such fun to watch! So relatable and super helpful! Thank you ladies!! 👏🙏💓
Aw that’s great! Thanks for these videos Liz!!
Great job! This was awesome. 😃 We love the pronunciation bits. We need a lot of work 😅 Thanks for the shout out, Liz. ❤️ - Josh & Kalie
Liz!! Gosto muito deste vídeo!! I love love love it. It's so nice to see how happy you are being out on the streets again and making these types of videos😊🌟🌟
What fun! Great coaching and encouragement. Getting out and just speaking and listening is so important. I have a few local shops where they insist I speak Portuguese and it's so helpful and they are so gracious. I struggle most with hearing the numbers when they quote the price. Thanks!
Great video! It was a pleasure to watch
Liz I like the way you teach people I am Portuguese I was born and one of the islands I came to Canada when I was five years old I’ve lived in Calgary Alberta Canada for most of my life for let’s see 49 years of my life I am trying to learn Portuguese but I can speak Portuguese but I want to improve my Portuguese to a higher level of vocabulary and I want to also like to learn how to write and read in Portuguese .
Love this channel!!! Thank you!!
Era brilliante Liz! Gostei muinto. You are such a great coach. You have an infectious enthusiasm!
Right, as a native Portuguese speaker I must say the way you pronounce "ão" and the r sound at the end of "ver" and "pensar" is absolutely phenomenal! Kudos for that
Excelente video! Muito obrigada Liz
Sempre util, Liz. Obrigado.
You're a great coach Liz. Just the way you speak, delightful in both English and Portuguese
Could you do an updated video with her. I'd like to see her progress
Her pronunciation was spot on, on some words. Well done.
This was really helpful!
To her credit, born and breed in Portugal, my job is 85% speaking and writing in English and the switch to portuguese a lot of times is quite tricky
I love this type of content! Preparing a duet on Tiktok 😚
I love these types of videos. It makes me feel more comfortable trying to speak in Portuguese bc I know I'm not alone lol
I'm so glad!
Muito Bom video! I guess the most important thing when moving to another country would be to be able to function in businesses and restaurants. The language coaching is a great idea.
Just amazing!
Gifted teacher and gifted student.
Loved this! Vegana também aqui. I thought she was remarkable!! So well done!!
What a proud moment for Cheryl and You. I really enjoyed this video keep these awesome tips coming they are so helpful Liz. I just used one of your one word wonders at the launderette and it felt so good yes it was just one word but it is a start 😁
Amazing! Which one? It’s your turn next!!
@@TalktheStreets POSSO?
Normally i would have stuttered some silly sentence like... "have you finished with this machine" in broken Portuguese and that one word said it all. I can't wait till you work your magic on my poor language skills😁
I've seen some of the videos on TikTok, they're really funny. She did a great job!
I love the video…!
Subscribing your channel more than one year, finally I am moving to Portugal, Lisbon this month! I’m so excited…!!
Hope you don’t mind if I talk to you when I find you somewhere around Lisbon🤗
I am Japanese by the way :)
I’d love it! Boa sorte!
You are such a talented teacher.
Thank you 🥺
Great and fun video. Best teacher ever
Wow, thanks!
The waiter was Brazillian and therefore he spoke slower that Portuguese people use to talk. You two did a gret job! Well done.
Great video I hope you ladies will do some more
soo good!! youre both so awesome :):)
Aww thank you for stopping by!
i think the reason so many ex pats have a hard time learning Portuguese is because most locals speak English and they're eager to do so, therefore it's easy to fall into that comfort zone. i know ex pats from the UK who've been living in Portugal for decades and can't even form a basic sentence in the native tongue. it really boils down to motivation and a general level of interest in learning the language. because from a utility standpoint it's really not necessary.
So glad I found you on CZcams.CZcams. I will be visiting Portugal for 2 weeks. My second time this year and I have been so frustrated trying to learn the language. Your video tutorials are so helpful! I and relatively new to you too and I'm not finding how to access the links you talk about to download. Such as ordering coffee. I'm sure it's easy and I'm just not familiar but I will keep searching. Thank you again.
All the videos I mention should be linked in the video description
Great video. I'm definitely going to use these tips next time I'm in Portugal. Just as a side note, the small difference between Spanish and Portuguese is that in the former it's croquetas, not '' croquetes''.
So true!! I was just pronouncing it how a Spanish person would if they see the Portuguese word written down but you are totally right the Spanish word is “croquetas”
Just a note: In portuguese is hambúrgueres and not burgeres. All the best for you 🙋🙋🙋
@@lxportugal9343 tb digo lol 😁
Adorei ela a treinar a pronuncia (e a escuta) do PTEU e vir um atendente brasileiro, hahahahaha. Em Lisboa aprendem-se todas as línguas portuguesas, se quiseres, and I think that's beautiful. Love your channel and LOVE Cheryl's TikTok as well.
I think its beautiful too!!
MORE videos like this, people trying portuguese in the real world!
Mt bom!
Obrigado!
I eat plant based whole foods. This video is so helpful since you were teaching about vegan ordering. Thank you 😍
A funny thing that happened was that she teached her how to say burguer in portuguese, saying that it is the same word but with a different pronunciation and the waiter just confirmed it. However, the waiter was brazilian and so he was not speaking european portuguese at all. In european portuguese burguer is hamburguer. Anyways, nice work!
I often cringe when people say the "s" at the end is a "sh" -- it's more of a "j". The "sh" I think comes from English-speakers who aren't sure what the final "s" sound reminds them of. I know it's a widely-used trick to help learners so I get why it's taught, but when I hear learners use "sh" at the end it sounds so awkward to me. For example, "casas", native speaker would not say "casash". I would say "casajjjj"-- ajjjjj. Does anyone else who is a native speaker agree? I really wish we could kick that "sh" stereotype to the curb lol But anyway, I love this channel, I show it to my husband for him to learn
Sounds good !!
I need to study how to " make a suggestion " in Portuguese and by the way how to reply to suggestions or to say my opinion about some thing .. iam waiting a video from you about that !❤️
Thank you and keep going 👏
To make a suggestion you can use "eu acho que..." (i think that.../i think) like "eu acho que deviamos ir embora deste sítio" (i think we must/should leave this place)
When you are talking about somebody like "she's pretty" you use the pronoun like
Eu acho - me bonito (i think im beautifull)
Eu acho-te bonito (i think you are beautifull)
Eu acho-o bonito (masculine) (i think he is beautifull)
Eu acho-a bonita (i think she is pretty)
(And then with we and they (with other pronouns)
So we use "eu acho" (i think) to opinions and sugestions
I would love to take English lessons like your Portuguese ones. :)
Hehe sadly I don’t teach English x
Great video! ^_^
Hi
great video! the only thing I would like to point out is that both Hamburger and Vegan words exist in Portuguese because they were brought from English, so you said burger and vegana perfectly but we would actually say hamburger (with the same pronunciation you used in burger) and vegan just like in english. Vegano/a tends to be a "brazilian" version of the word.
otherwise great job!
How perfect!! So helpful for me as a fellow vegan planning a move to PT! I really relate to Cheryl's situation, wish there were a way to get in contact! Also, seriously can you share what restaurant that was? Thanks!!
Graça 77 in Lisbon!
I learned Portuguese for country of Brazil in South America and the vowels are easier than the European Portuguese. I am planning for translation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the Portuguese language.
they have a much lower number of vowels - so, it's easier
I am portuguese and I've been loving your videos. I also speak different languages and I know how difficult it can be to find the right resources, specially when it comes to listening part.
For anyone that may be interested, I have some youtuber recommendations so you can practice your listening skills.
Female youtubers: Sofia Oliveira, Inês Rochinha, Maria Rodrigues, Sara Vicario, Sofia Barbosa, Mafalda Creative
Male youtubers: Cara Coroa, Tomás Oliveira, Toni Vicente (tech channel), Miguel Luz
If you're interested I can also give some music artist recommendations!
The S before a consonant is not always pronounced [sh]. It might also be pronounced [j] depending on the consonant that follows: Lisboa, desde, fisga, Tesla, asma, cisne, Israel, desvio.
Great video! Any suggestions for good Portuguese podcasts to listen to, to improve my comprehension skills? ☺️
I don't know many podcasts, but you can check Maluco Beleza or Viagens Beleza (it is his second CZcams channel about traveling).
Do you like Harry Potter? I know a good audiobook.
yay! fellow vegan living in PT and also struggling with Portugues!
I recently found your channel and I love it! I am Cape Verdean American, my Mother and her family of 9 cooked many of the dishes of Portugal . Could you please highlight anything culturally or a person from CaboVerde to your channel . My roots are from the island of Sao Nicolau CV . I am planning on transitioning to Portugal next year to live and will do a scouting trip as well. I’m a Pediatric Speech Pathologist . Thank you for your work !
I would love to!! I'll add it to the list. Thank you for stopping by!
Burguer is actually hambúrguer but it will be understood by most as a short cut.
Really impressive, Portuguese is not an easy language by any means.
Good job, also great to know she's Vegan!
love your content Liz do you do private course?
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for the vegan focus!! Did you give the name of the restaurant? I'm always on the lookout for great opções veganas!
Graça 77!
Boa sorte !
Amei, Filipi e minha gente.....Brasilian.
Vegan in Portugal - Bo sorte ! :-)
😊👍
Love your teaching, just one slight correction: In Spanish "croquetes" are "croquetas"
👍👍👍
Thanks so much, Liz! I have a gluten allergy (Celiac Dz) and I'm wondering if I can use some of these same phrases to communicate without gluten at restaurants. Do you have any other tips or advice?
Yes, you can adapt all the phrases that they said in the video. Gluten in portuguese is very similar ("Glúten") and the pronunciation is very similar, so you shouldn't have any problems. You can say "sou alérgica/o ao glúten" ou "tenho alergia ao glúten" (if you want to express yourself in a gender neutral way) and "Tem opções sem glúten?" (Do you have options without gluten?) or you can point to something on the menu and say "Isto tem glúten?" (Does this have gluten?). Products without gluten usually say "Gluten free" or "Sem gluten". However, if you're feeling akward you can always switch to english, most of the staff in tourist areas can communicate in english or can call someone that can answer better to your question. Your health and safety comes first! If you want an introductory phrase you can start like. "Bom dia/Boa tarde/Boa noite, tenho alergia ao glúten. Tem opções sem glúten no menu?"
Parabéns Cheryl. Falaste muito bem! Gostaste os croquetes de alheira? Parece que há mais opções veganas agora. Como se chama o restaurante en a Graça? Sou vegetariano e queria experimentar aqueles pratos quando eu for a Portugal este mes.
A comida era muito boa. O restaurante chama-se Graca 77. Têm muitas opções vegetarianas e veganas.
Since I won’t be downloading tiktok, I was wondering if the things you upload there are also found here or if it’s exclusively on tiktok
We will also share it on Instagram later today!
Hi, May I ask a question? The dictionary 'tells' me that menu is also Cardapio and Ementa. So which one the the right term to use in a restaruant and what is the meaning of the other two "menues" - Cardapio and Ementa ? and when will I use them? Thanks much for any explanation.
Cardápio is most used in Brazil. Ementa is used in Portugal but “menu” is easier!
If you have learned Spanish lh in portuguese is the same as ll in Spanish: Calle [SP]
Btw well come to portugal my mans
Estou fissurada (just used an online dictionary for that. Hope it's correct!)
When I speak English, I don't think in Portuguese then my brain translate then I speak, I think in English or another language so its quicker to speak
The waiter has a São Paulo accent
Hey liz! I loved your video. However make sure to notice that "lh" you should pronounce as a "ll" (double L as in spanish), this means, you should never pronounce the "L" in "LH", it's more like a "y" like "ya". LH (pt) = LL (es) = Y (en). Sou ALHEIRA = (phonetically) AYEIRA
I loved this exercise. It's great see someone in action using their knowledge of portuguese and with your help do something in real life. Good work!
Bom trabalho!
Espero meu portugês ser aceitável kkkkk
Where do you suggest we listen at the Portuguese speaking
Hey, I have a whole playlist for listening practice :) czcams.com/play/PLYdF5RFnicrcNqBNjJA_pe_PLLnOWPgjx.html&si=J6yoC16H207dfDxX
❤️❤️❤️❤️🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
Don't worry too much with the gender of words. If you get it wrong occasionally, natives may find it funny and may smile but they'll understand it perfectly. Some may correct you (some times politely, like repeating with the right gender), but most will not even try to correct it.
Vegan is not vegana, is vegetariana
And LH is so hard sound to produce that no one else expect for portuguese can say it properly.. But pretty well said anyway, congrats
Garçon Brasileiro :D
You look so Portuguese! You look more Portuguese than most Portuguese girls. Its impossible you dont have ancestors from Portugal. You must take a DNA test!
Encomendar comida em português não é canja! =)
:)
That waiter was definitely Brazilian wasn't he :p
Yes ,he is .
And he was not from Rio... or from Pará.... or from some parts of Northeast :)
Croquetas en español, no croquetes!!. Pero te hubiesemos entendido igual!!
Wait, anyone else portuguese here? Do you guys actually say 'burgueres'? I just say "hambúrguer" lol
we say "hambúrguer / hambúrgueres" i dont know why she said "burguer" maybe is from not so common region i personally never heard it. Overall i think she knows a lot portuguese but her portuguese doesn't sound native, but the rest of the video is all correct
impressão minha ou o garçom tinha sotaque brasileiro?
É brasileiro
😂😂😂 A very common mistake: it's -lhEIra and not -lhIEra i.e "alheira".
