    Gorgeous, dreamy melancholia. Brian and lyricist Tony Asher perfectly capturing Brian's state of mind in the mid sixties. A musical genius in a band with people who just didn't 'get it' the way he did. Mention no names, but we know which member of the Beach Boys in particular that we're talking about. Brian was so far ahead of his time musically, that it seemed only the Beatles were hearing the kind of things that he was in his head.

      You are actually comparing the Beach Boys to the Beatles! A total genius with songs of substance to a nothing bar band from England! That even after spending $20,000 etc. barely rose to the status of more! Plus here is John Lennon as arrogant as can be whereas Brian Wilson is just one of us.

      @@nicks9776 love the beach boys but come on, the "bar band" created Tomorrow Never Knows, Strawberry Fields Forever, It's All Too Much, I Am The Walrus etc. Pushed the boundaries of music and studio techniques. Americans are so arrogant

    This is the song that made me a Beach Boys fan for life, no questions asked. There is such an overwhelming sense of melancholy that pervades every second of it with the instruments, lyrics and singing (those haunting backing vocals send chills down my spine). I think this is the best song on the album.

  • @jayburdification

    This is my #1 song of the ‘60s. Much as I love my Beatles, Brian gets the nod for his relatable introspection and gorgeous melody with groundbreaking recording techniques.

  • @porflepopnecker4376
    @porflepopnecker4376 Před 3 lety +26

    I love this song because it perfectly describes Brian's dilemma at the time, being a musical and lyrical genius who's creatively stifled by a bunch of apes who just want to hop around barefoot on the beach singing about surfing. I consider the "Beach Boys" to be Brian Wilson and a back-up band. Without him, they mean nothing to me.

    • @jayburdification
      @jayburdification Před 3 lety +5

      Yep that’s basically what this song is about. Mike Love & co. holding him back. See: SMiLE Sessions & avoid. Go straight to Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE from 2004. The incomplete sessions are too depressing to listen to. Better to hear the music from people who took joy in it.

    • @gaiaeternal5131
      @gaiaeternal5131 Před 3 lety +4

      I agree with you about the rest of the band not being fully on board with Brian's ambition. But 'apes' is a bit harsh. Didn't Mike lead the band and write lyrics to some of Brian's music (including Good Vibrations)? Didn't the rest of the band contribute to the gorgeous harmonies that made the BB sound? And didn't Tony Asher and Van Dyke Parks actually write other Pet Sounds and Smile lyrics to Brian's admittedly brilliant music. I saw Brian perform Smile with the Wondermints in 2004 and was entranced by it. However IMHO it is a flawed masterpiece and he has never bettered it since (yes, I acknowledge his mental health problems over the years so maybe that's the reason). These late 60s times were ideal for creativity and progression, so maybe Brian was made for them after all. Not sure he would be in 2021.

    • @justintime42000
      @justintime42000 Před 3 lety +5

      The description of Brian’s brothers and Mike Love and Al Jardine (who were Brian’s cousins) as “apes who just want to hop around on the beach” is harsh and inaccurate (none of them ever surfed except for Dennis, and he wasn’t a big surfer) but it is definitely true that Brian was relentlessly pressured by all of the BB plus his horrible abusive father Murray Wilson to keep writing songs that would be easy radio hits and to follow that “formula” instead of changing it. Their survival depended entirely on Brian. They didn’t like the introspective creations from Brian at all. No wonder Brian succumbed to introversion/wanting to be left alone, cocaine abuse with his brother Dennis, and then finally became overwhelmed by schizophrenia. The saying that “there’s a fine line between genius and insanity” certainly applies to Brian Wilson. There’s no doubt Brian loved his brothers though and that it was Mike Love who was the worst offender. He always struck me as being very self-centered/narcissistic. If I recall correctly from reading Brian’s autobiography Mike Love hit Brian during disagreements. If there was a Lifetime Asshole Achievement award for entertainers, Mike Love would definitely qualify as a recipient! 🤣

      @johnmavroudis2054 Před 3 lety +1

      @@justintime42000 Yeah... Maybe that only applied to Murray and Mike Love... I just thought it was a hilarious line... and also I feel the same way the original poster does about the rest: Without Brian, I'm really not interested. (Glorious harmonies, no doubt... and Dennis was a cool cat.)

The melody makes me think. It challengers me because it’s not predictable like a simple hum along song. Then I can’t stop because the chorus is so connected to the verse. I’m in a loop. Great songwriting.

    This song helped me unlock Pet Sounds! I was on a plane about to descend into Reykjavik and suddenly I heard those temple blocks coming through my headphones during the chorus - I've never focused so much on such a specific sound within a mesh of other sounds on a record- honestly felt like golf balls were ricocheting around the fuselage. I completely tripped out 😄
    Anyway, that's the moment I started to truly realise the wall of sound behind this record! Ultimately, this song became the story of Brian's life and I think that's what makes it so poignant and a fan favourite

    This song is a standout on Pet Sounds. I think it was one of the earlier concept albums and therefore this song fits nicely into the mix of the other songs in that is relates to the whole. I discovered this album later in life and it’s breathtaking in its entirety.

    The "wall of sound" reverb really amplifies the feelings behind this song - Brian learned alot from Phil Spector. George Harrison's first solo album, produced by Phil, also has the wall of sound effect, but George was not a fan of it. The latest remaster of All Things Must Pass took out the wall of sound, which I disagree on.

    By the way, the "Electro Theremin" wasn't a REAL Theremin Paul Tanner designed it. "He developed and played the Electro-Theremin, an electronic musical instrument that mimics the sound of the theremin". (Wikipedia) It was easier to play than the Theremin, it had a keyboard with a metal strip in front of it so your finger could slide up and down. The Beach Boys used it for live concerts.

The Wrecking Crew session musicians helped a lot and Brian began with this album to become more of a creator/songwriter/music composer and less the leader of a band with his two brothers and cousin.
