this is not funny, but at the same time, I'm not sure how i feel about these videos. what we really should be doing (especially what police should be doing) is telling business owners and non-cyclists that they should let bicyclists bring their children INDOORS with them! bicycles should not be left unattended and its infuriating when store employees tell me to 'leave it outside'. they just have no clue, so education is key.

The number one problem in bike theft is not an inadequate lock but an inadequate legal system that favor the thief and deters the public from getting involved . Most people will walk right by a thief using a loud angle grinder because they are afraid of being attacked or a law suit by the perp.
place bicycle theft in the same category as car theft and you will see the police getting involved and alter the laws so that if the owner of the bike or a member of the public intervenes , they cannot be sued by the thief no matter how severe their injuries form the beating that they deserve.

On the subject of being challenged: a couple of years ago some twit accidentally locked my bike, along with his, to a stand. I went home by bus, gave it a couple of hours and then came back with a few hand tools to remove his lock (a cheap chain and padlock which I could see wasn't going to put up much of a fight). It took me I suppose 5 or 10 minutes, during which time plenty of people walked past - this was in central London, very near Wellington Barracks in Westminster. A couple of people gave me a slightly funny look but no one said anything. The more blatant you are, the less likely to get challenged. The irony was that the twit responsible turned up just as I was about to impart the final hacksaw stroke. He was suitably mortified and we parted with a laugh.

Time would only matter for each lock if you replaced the cutting wheel for each lock.
Being homeless for 5+ years I can confirm that people that are stealing bikes do carry big cutters around a lot more than you would think and the grinder less often. It's harder for them to hang on to over time because they get desperate and will trade it off. They only cost $20 at harbor freight though. Another thing is one of each type of lock helps. The cable ones need a cable cutter to do it fast. The bolt cutters have a really hard time with those. I use a thick, combo cable (the combo can be figured out in less than a minute if the #/ letter wheels are loose side to side AT ALL) that is made from a better brand. Make sure the wheels are tight. Also: Remove your light when you leave your bike!

    • @cbernier3
      @cbernier3 Před 8 lety +22

Can you? Think about it. If your bike was covered in unremovable hey look this bike was stolen paint, you wouldn't want it back. So the theif sets off the dye pack. Then what? If it's a cheap bike, they just leave it there, and you have to buy a new bike anyway. If the bike is expensive enough, they pay to have it fixed and it essentially becomes a new bike and no longer identifiable to you. You won't get it back. If you do get it back all messed up, what's the repair cost? $600? I have no idea. What's the deductible on your insurance? This only helps people with bikes whose depreciated value is still more than the repair costs, and people with bikes like that don't leave them out much,

    • @cbernier3
      @cbernier3 Před 8 lety +11

Very few people would actually buy this, especially in the beginning. Therefore thieves won't really know about it. It can't deter them, because they won't know it's a dye lock, because they've never seen one before. Plus whose gonna pay for the collateral damage? You dirty up a bunch of private and public property in the process. Your idea isn't practical. The research, the liabilities, the acceptance needed. The price would end up way too high, the demand too low. Such a thing would likely not be legal in many place. Your idea isn't going to get off the ground. Who would want to angel invest in such a thing?

  • @jacktjong1266
    @jacktjong1266 Před 2 lety +180

Known ways how to effectively secure your bike from all thieves:
    - Buy a second bike, give it to an armed security guard you employ. Let him follow you and guard your bike.
    - If you're short on money, have an huge attack dog chained next to it, at all times.
    - Don't use your bike. Ever. Just walk.
    - Keep it in the vault of a bank.
    - Coat your bike in fast-acting poison.
    - Become a thief and steal bikes from others.
    - Lit your bike on fire.
    - Buy the Emperors new Bike. Just pretend that you have a bike. Try to mimic bike motions when you ride it.
    - Move to a place without thieves, like antarctica.
    - Use a bike made of pure lead. If it's to heavy to ride, it's to heavy to steal.
    - Weld your bike onto heavy objects. Most thieves carry only grinders, not a welder.
    - Get a thief, ride the thief. Bikes don't steal thieves.
    - Become a gangster. Learn the way of the street. Take over crime organisations. Avange your stolen bike, by sending assasins.
    - Join military. Go to war. Return home. Join the police. Quit job. Avange your stolen bike, by becoming bitter war veteran.
    - Go to Japan. Join ninja village. Learn the ways of the ninja. Return home. Avange stolen bike, by becoming assasin.
    - Turn in to Transformer. Transform into bike when you need it. Turn back to human when you don't.
If you follow those steps, you should be safe.

I rather doubt there is a seamless system for collecting and reviewing the camera footage. Easy to imagine an hour plus to request and obtain each video used in tracking the thief. Perhaps as AI develops, a better system for accessing and reviewing camera feeds will also improve and handle all the tracking without man hours spent on it. I've heard China has some pretty good tech going for tracking people... There were stories about it being used to catch Covid quarantine breakers. More than just cameras could be used though. You can bet most thieves are going to have cellphones with them. Cellphone company and other providers like google that have location tracking services on the phones can probably identify everyone in the area and their moves before and after any specific events. if they aren't doing it already, the data is available for one of those futuristic automated contact tracing systems. Track the thieves to the shops / buyers they work with and follow the flow back out to all the other thieves and map the whole network of people involved. Google already does that with targeted advertisements. You'll get ads based on the people you associate with.

7:14 picking isn't a concern. He admits it, everyone knows it. All locks can be picked. The person stealing your bike is a half drunk homeless man using the one tool/crowbar they stole out of an old pickup truck. Its not a cat burglar in black pajamas with a jewelers tool set.
The best bike lock, is this:

The conclusion is that it's pointless trying to protect your property as carrying enough locks to only deter someone for less than a minute is unwieldy for this mode of transport. This means we need the police to be more of a deterrent and sentences to be more significant. I love how the police recommend getting a decent lock but really just get it marked in case we happen to find it in the future - good work there.
Marking is pointless, I've literally never heard of anyone getting their bike back and generally the police file reports like a spam email.

First bike I had bought for about 40 years. All my other bikes had come off the road verge.
I had the bike about 3 weeks, and it was stolen from the beach even though I had a good lock on it.
i registered the serial number and put photos on "BikeLinc" so it would come up if anybody tried to sell it or hock it.
Last week the police advised me they had found my bike during a raid on a house 60km away, looking for other stolen goods.
They sent me a photo of the bike and it still looks pretty good. No rust, and still plenty of tread on the tires.
The police advised me they had never found a bike after this amount of time, so it's a bit of a miracle - but hey - it happened.

A very effective cheap way of devalueing the look of you bike is to simply wrap a plastic grocery/shopping bag over the saddle of the bike. When portable grinders started to become available heavy duty locks were no trouble for bike thieves. Sometimes thieves will cut away the railing and load the still locked bike and railing into the back of a van to be worked on later at a workshop.

I purposefully use a used, old, vintage road bike for this exact reason, u dont need anything fancy to ride to work or wherever. Less of a target. Keep ur good stuff locked up at home and use it for ur long rides. Even if u ride to work, find a way to keep ur bike inside the building u work at by any means possible and always keep ur bike indoors at home too. Weather alone can do serious damage over time.

    • @TheFeldhamster

Nowadays, real vintage is a target, too. What you really want to use is something from the mid 90s or so, with a couple of rust spots or bunged up paint and a frame that's obviously steel + heavy, not aluminum or carbon or any new + light material.
Also, taking your saddle with you helps a lot. If the thief can't just ride off, that's a nice deterrent according to the advice our police give.

The two outer legs of a *D* lock, should really consist of *two high tensile steel INNER leg tubes* , that are freely able to turn around an actual high tensile steel inner core that originates from the the lock body. This eliminates using a hacksaw, so that if the would be thief did manage to cut through the outer steel casing, and the saw contacts the free turning rod inside, it's game over for cutting further, as the saw will merely revolve the inner steel tube. I imagine a set of bolt cutters might do it and if not, a hand held angle grinder's cutting disc would seemingly meet with the same problem as the hacksaw. One can always back it up with a GPS bike tracker, that'll have the Police paying the perps a visit...

0:04 ok for massive amounts of individual people out there
Yes use d lock threaded through the frame and also the wheel and also the actual bike rack itself
Where you can use a heavy-duty chain to wrap them up now
Certain people who goes on the next level of bike theft
Don't have the equipment to court through this particular kind of instructional behaviour
Then they will equip their self with Allen keys and spanners and socket wrenches
Those people there are there to try and take the bike or take the actual bike to bits
If you lock up the freemium wheels which is a good idea
You must think about the forks as well now for the forks which are single crown get a tension cable what you can order it from the internet we can place padlock a secure padlock
Wrap that extension cable around your fork and frame so they cannot go off with your thoughts because it will be secured and tighten around your frame and also secured around the forks
Because certain bike theft will end up on doing the components
No there is another little finger as well which is called a handlebar brake locking systems for motorcycles you can use this for push bikes this one which for pressurised the brake blocks the break in and also wrapped around your grips and also your lever
0:10 and also if you look at the contents of this pick more at least over just 6 to 7 quid on eBay or Amazon it will stop B first son doing your grips I'm doing your brake levers for the time being so they can't take off your handlebars or your stem
Because some of them can be equipped with biking tools
This is why we need to look into by that very carefully when parking up your bike a lower voice always take off your seat and your seat post because sometimes if they can't get that they will Rob down instead
And if they can't achieve on something they will not come back to it or they will end up getting their locks and looking a lock around it
In the process of this simple matter is best to buy not one bike what to buy 2 b have expensive one to keep for riding and have a cheap bike for riding and going to places and locking up
The cheap bike is so journey in places and locking up and using for work or using it for going into certain places such as the city centre
I advised people to look into the project and look at the conservation of this now the supply bottom bracket which is a straight through bolt through I invite people not to go for that conscience go for a 3 piece crank bottom bracket where is it where you have to bottom bracket but with a wider hole on it have it secured very tiring because sometimes they end up trying to take off your crank
And also observed your area before locking up your bike for example look for CCTV footage for aiming at the bike racks or look for a place which has CCTV footage or a cage why you lock up your bike
Never look up your bike with loads of locks around the actual bike rack because those locked that somebody else who are ready and ready to come into town to lock up your bike with their lock
If that does happen keep your locks on the bike call the police or call the Fire Brigade to come out if you're paying your taxes telling the situation if they cannot deal with the situation to on bolt the locks which somebody has attached to keep your lots on it and go out and get yourself a bolt Cropper or some sort of what is involving this always keep your bikes on you and you have photo evidence that it is your bike and the police do deal with this matter they able to call the fire service will come out and on Bolt locks that's how it should be dealt with in the professional way

In my opinion the cheapest combination would be a basic U-lock, combined with a low power circuit traversing across the lock to detect if it's been cut.
If it detects a cut, then it would activate a loud siren. It could even potentially spray the nearby area with a foul odor or dye.
I feel like the skunk lock is doing it a bit wrong by putting it within the locking structure itself.

The folding brompton bike is the best bike to buy for commuting, just fold it up and take it with you, peace of mind,

Instead of adding more locks, they should make easy detachable handlebars that you can take with you. This stop thieves riding off. Also steering lock is useful.

A friend of mine put a GPS locator in his bike. He's a big man, with bulging muscles. When his bike was stolen, he grabbed a large wrench and just visited the guy that took it. The bike was retrieved and the thief had to change his pissed pants. No violence was necessary, just the threat of it.

You'll never stop a thief with an 18V Makita Angle Grinder. Any type of lock only keeps honest people out.....always was the fact, always will be!

@Armando Sturzenegger Don't lock your bike where thieves can see it. In fact don't lock your bike where anyone can see it. Either that or don't own a bike. You have it, thieves want it, simple really!
