For my fifth episode of Riffing With The Modes, I decided to write an entire 80's rock single to demonstrate the power of Mixolydian. Kerry Devine performed vocals and Jeff Schwertfeger played drums. The video was filmed at a tiny suburban concert venue during quarantine, and then I filmed some greenscreen shots later on. The effects are all stock premiere effects- lots of color adjustments, channel blur, and automated zooms. Plus fake shakey cam when needed!
Hope you enjoy this one, it's the sort of song I would love to hear on the radio once a year and not much more than that, lol

I really think you're the Bob Ross of music, you have no ideia how much you're actually helping me with this type of art that we call music. Thank you for that and Cheers from Brazil !
Cara, eu só consigo pensar que a gente não pode deixar o rock morrer.
That is an excellent description.
Which one's better?
Gonna Get What's Comin To Ya
Or
My Pickup Truck is My Best Friend
It was great as well. But this has a MESSAGE!
For me, it's this song.
pickup truck
My Grandma Sue is Dead too*
oh good the granny song xD what an insider
Cheesier than my grandma's lasagna. Great job.
BTW, "Oh no, here it comes" is also the best guitar solo intro phrase I have ever heard. Cheers from Germany!
UBLionHeart check out Since ive been loving you by Led Zeppelin ;)
nö JBO- "Sppiel doch du dein blödes Solo" :op
Rick Beato: What makes this song great?
12tone: Draw up some elephants!
Oh, wait, never mind guys. We know how this one went down.
Rock on, young ‘uns!
I'd still like to see a 12tone vid on this. If only to see an 80s hair metal elephant.
Rick would definitely like this song.
😂😂😂
Yeah, this does sound like 80s "pop metal". This mixolydian formula creates such a fresh cool and energetic sound. The vocalist is great. The drummer's real funny, love how he's trying to sing to the swinging mic! There was a time when THIS was the kind of music they played on the radio all the time...
He wig looks stupid 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Can we just acknowledge he made this for a tutorial on using mixolidian and its this good
Awesome. You have so much fun in these, and it definitely shines through.
tbh the only reason i do music is cause it's fun. i don't have some deeper goal, it's just really really fun
@@SignalsMusicStudioThat's awesome you value FUN, likely largely just one reason that you're super successful Jake. I reckon you'd be great in anything you attempt in life. A good life lesson here. This place is awesome, don't wanna let Covid kick me off the merry-go-round just yet. I'm just discovering how FUN this instrument and hobby is, and it's thanks to stellar instructors like you that help me glean even more FUN from MUSIC !!
In before Beardstank has a "suspicious gardening accident".
LOL
BIZARRE gardening accident
They will probably say something like "He suffocated on his own vomit while sleeping.". But dont believe it.
Many people spontaneously combust each year...
It's just not very widely reported.
You guys are legit, Steel Panther , Poison, Motley Crue tour worthy, I’d pay to see that bill.
Oh, this is 1000 times better than steel panther. Leagues and leagues better. Poison, Mötley Crüe, fire house. Any one of those bands could’ve written or played that song. Not steel panther though. I grew up in that time and glam metal was my thing. I promise you none of us would’ve listened to steel panther. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not a bad band but, something is missing there. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe hard-core superstar. They’ve got good stuff. Too bad they’re not making any new things. As for steel panther, I think what it is is that they need a better songwriter. Kind of like Love Stallion needs a new vocalist.
I was waiting for you guys to increase the last chorus by 1 whole tone.
#oldest trick in the book :)
My favourite genre, these guys in the 80s had the attitude very few have these days, some of the best Guitar players came from the early 80s scene, please make more of these.
This really captures that 80's feeling
Creating music is something magical. Even when you employ computers and current technology. To create a song that makes people happy and they sing along in their car or at a live show.. that's magic. You've touched people's hearts. And not many things in this world allows one to touch people's hearts. Especially strangers hearts! Awesome video, awesome song, awesome video documing how you did it, great work guys!!!
I played the audio for this to my bro and SIL and had them convinced they had forgotten a mid eighties classic.
Dude! This is pure CANDY from start to finish! So fun and suns up an entire decade. Well done. Absolutely love the tongue in cheek comedy through the vid as well!
🤘😎🤘
Yesterday (2 Mar 2022) I was working in the kitchen and also decided to listen to some music through our Google "hockey puck". I rarely do either of those things. I asked it to play some rock music. As it turns out, in a lineup of music that I was enjoying, "What's Comin' To Ya" was sandwiched between Kansas Carry on my Wayward Son and Boston More Than a Feeling. Wow. Randomly being flanked by those artists and songs seems like the definition of making it in the modern music world. Congrats Jake, Kerry, & Beardstank!!
Wow, how cool is that, thx for sharing
This is making my get psyched mix
I love Jake's Channel. I watch 6 or 7 different CZcams teachers.
I create brand new melodies on my piano on a daily basis now. I labelled most the notes.
That ONE NOTE in the guitar solo makes it! Looks like a lot of fun to put together.
hm hm hm hmmm hmmm hm hm hm hm ... * finds himself still humming the chorus 20 minutes after watching video *
.
.
Holy crap, this would have been a hit!
Touching Cloth Productions still could be I reckon
8 months later..... :-)
Wow! Amazing song. Guys like you makes me belive that rock will never die.
A fan from Brasil here
Spot on 1985. I hear a little Dokken, Poison, Ratt, and Satrianni. The only thing keeping it from sounding later in the decade was an underuse of tapping, whammy bars, and a pound of cocaine. But it has cheese for days and that's awesome.
Great job guys. It really brought back some much needed vibes from my childhood.
I LOVE THIS SONG. I have a soft spot for hair metal, idk why :D. Thanks for this Jake, keep up the good work!
Man this put such a smile on my face. Thanks dudes.
Greetings from Brazil!
Man, that guitarist is ON FIRE!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤩🤩🤩
My favorite parts are the shots of BeardStank trying to sing into the mic while it's moving. 😁
Hah, that was a lot of fun Jake, good job. Thanks for sharing!
HILARIOUS!
The drummer is hilarious, thank you for the great song guys
THE RIFF IS IN MY HEAD, I CAN'T TAKE IT OFF
Amazing work Jake, the drum equalization would do a great episode, i'm very interested on it.
I've got some plans to do more production lessons. It might be on a different channel though, and it might be mostly livestreamed.... I'll keep you all posted!
Got that flat 80s drum sound... I'm guessing reverb on the snares and lots of compression over everything. If it's not actually a drum machine
@@telequacker-9529 - it's mixed with trigged samples and then all that you mentioned. Not a drum machine. See Jakes video about composing and producing the song.
Simple is perfect sometimes! I love this so much 🥰
Sounds amazing!!
In retrospect I’m glad it came to me.
Jake-Lizzie-O let's go !!!
Surprisingly authentic, I'm very much impressed. Good job!
Good to see the whole production cycle. But also looking forward to the smaller segments you teach as well. As a piano player I get a lot out of those.
It's true, it works perfectly!
This is a cool Poison type song. It really rocks.
Totally ROCKS! RockOn! Looking forward to watching how this was made. Nice work.
So good. Thank you Jake
Absolutely fantastic!!!!!
You Rock Jake!
Brilliant!
You did a good job Man, I really love you. In fact,SMS is my favorite CZcams channel. And I'd love to recommend it to my Chinese friend
There's just one phrase I can instantly think of that works with this... "Nailed it!". :) Awesome tune, and loved the making-of video. Glad to see it on spotify too, so I can actually listen to it easier and more often. :)
Rock on!
💥It's out!! 🤩 Sick! What a blast is this trinity feat 🌟Was a pleasure following you through making this wonder 🙌 your professional approaches, methods and principles engraved in your lessons and practice routines has tremendously helped the past year.. one self-taught, no-musical background enthusiast,🕳️ to get closer every day, step by step, by looking at great possible reflections like yourself, slowly becoming the musician I wanted to become. 🙏And more so developing a passion to keep growing 💪. I even developed a desire for singing on the way, apparently a deep never expressed passion of mine.😁 Rock on and thank you for being you, keep doing what you're doing & don't ever loosen the grip 👊 kudos from a BG fan in London, UK and thanks a million for the modal poster 🙏 it's a legacy piece of art ❤️
This is kind of a master class
Awesome that 80s vibe comes through 🤘🏼
Awesome!
This is just great. It sounds so easy but it's not🤯🤯🤯
aweome work i loved it
After 3 days of the chorus stuck in my head from the very informative "How to" vdo, I'd say that your mission was accomplished! The "keep it simple so anyone can do it" theme worked, and it's obvious that you guys had a ton of fun making the vdo! More hilarious may have been using your mugs for the bass and keyboard lines! Thanks for sharing, and best of luck! Now, how do I get rid of this thing?!
Haha! Just read this. Is it still stuck in your head? ;)
Amazing song
Back to 1986 for a few minutes! But the solo is missing some crazy tapping! XD
btw, if you like 80s music, check out the ballad that I made and Beardstank sang! czcams.com/video/bHwwJihitl0/video.html
Awesome
Tasty jams Jake. 🤘🤘
Catchy song Jake. Plus your looks definitely reminded me of Mick Mars from Mötley Crüe.
Keep it going. 🤘🏻😎
I've been watching your videos from some time now and I think this is the best content available on youtube to learn music theory on guitar and also to compose in different style.
I have a request, could you please make a video on theory and composing similar to Pink floyd. How to sound like Pink floyd.
It would be great if you could do it.
Great ! Jake !
holy crap you guys rock!
great job Jake
Good idea to post the video after the making of !
Thats most 80' as you can get without time machine I guess :D
Thanks for this channel mr Lizzio
This is 80's tastic!!!
Beardstank: super solid beats!
I hear this and imagine someone singing about their British car... 😆
That was truly awesome.. has Frogleap Studios got some serious competition? Hell yeah.
Epicc...... Jake are you gonna make a crash course on jazz as well cuz your blues lessons were truly amazing
Nice one! A whole lotta new subscribers are gonna comin' to ya! \m/
I see what ya did there
I feel like i just found my friend's dad's band he never left
YEA
YES! I'm so glad I can download this song now!! Can you do the same for that Truck BFF song?
Kerry - amazing voice man! How do get that perfect metal rasp?
"Hair Metal" hahahah. This is totally exactly the sound. I was in high school. I listened to punk and ska but my metal friends were extremely cool (although somewhat underfed it seemed). They put up with me dissing Def Leppard and Quiet Riot but we both loved the Who and Zeppelin. AC/DC and Van Halen were also impossible not to like. Beastie Boys provided the evidence that all these subcultures had the right to party together.
haha - well done!
Best classic rock song after the classic rock era
Really well done Jake! My only critique is I would have kept it in D the whole song and mixed D Mixo and D minor pentatonic for the solo.
ROCK N' ROLLIN'! Ugh, I just LOVE this song, it's been my top played song on Spotify for ages now! You, Kerry and Jeff really outdid yourselves!
If I may ask, do you have the lyrics for this on hand? If it's alright with you, I'd like to write a Musixmatch page for this song so I can get the lyrics up on the Spotify upload. I can make out the mass majority of the song, but there are a few lines I'm unsure of, and it'd be nice to have some official confirmation on 'em! Thank you so much!
(PS: Do you ever have plans to bring "Generations" or your older works like "Immaculate Gyration" and "My Favorite Time Of Year" to Spotify? I'm completely alright with listening to them on their respective platforms, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask! Much appreciated, and keep rockin'! HUGE fan of your work!)
I've got the lyrics. I know we made some changes to them before the final mix, would be interesting to see what didn't make the cut, lol. I'll see about digging them up and I'll ask Jake if it's cool, I don't see why it would be a problem :)
(You didn’t think you’d get away with it, did ya?)
You stole my heart right from the start
Now you’re stealin’ my love away
Livin’ life where nothing can last
But someday you’re gonna pay
I used to think you were something special
But look at you now babe
Your heart is rotten to the core
So when it comes time to even the score
CHORUS:
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
I see you runnin’ but you can’t out run what you’ve done
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
You burn a friend and it’ll ALWAYS come back in the end
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to YOU)
I remember all of the lies empty things that you used to say
And even though I’m over it now I’ve been
waiting for this day
(whoa)
You made a fool out me babe
(oh-oh)
I betcha think that your free babe
(whoa)
Well you ain’t got a clue
There’s big storm headin’ for you
CHORUS:
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
I see you runnin’ but you can’t out run what you’ve done
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
You burn a friend and it’ll ALWAYS come back in the end
You’re gonna get what’s comin to YOU, yeah, no, yeah, yeah I’m talkin’ to you
You’re gonna get what’s comin to YOU
Oh, no, no here it comes!
[solo]
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
Just a matter of time until you pay for your crimes yeah
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
A look in your eyes, I can see the surprise babe
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
It’s the end of the road before it all explodes for ya
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
And there ain’t no way to escape…..aahhhhh….
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
You know I gotta get away
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
Oh, no, no, no, yeah, no, yeah... [cuz the '80s]
(You’re gonna get what’s comin to ya)
Comin' to you
Ga-ga-ga-ga-ga-ga-gow
What’s comin’ to you
@@kerrydevine8630 Hello, Mr. Devine! Thank you SO much for your interest in assisting me with this! And thank you for releasing the lyrics! This is a massive help and I couldn't be more grateful. I love this song a lot, it's one of my favorite songs - so good to work to. Jake and Jeff's rockin' instrumentals and your vocals make it EPIC! Hopefully I'll have the lyrics up for Spotify soon! Thanks again, and keep it up with the bangers!
@@CometMedal My pleasure. It's great to know a song I helped create is among someone's favorites. I can't ask for more than that. You're very welcome. Rock on! 🤘🤘
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S BEEN A YEAR SINCE THIS COMMENT! Nuts!
Been a while since I've been on the CZcams upload here, but this still tops my Spotify tracks! I've been taking the Signals music lessons, even have my own acoustic and (hand-me-down) electric guitar now. I've learned a lot and am LEARNING a lot! Looking forward to learning this song! I wish anybody still lurkin' around these parts a fantastic year, keep rockin' on!
Throw in a few dirty words, and you have Steel Panther. 😆 Awesome!
"Even though I'm over it now I've been waiting for this day"
So it pretty much means you're _not_ over it ^^.
Yeah, no, yeah, no, yeah yeah yeah! [haha cuz the '80s]
Awesome stuff. Nailed it. My only critique (and this is tiny,) is that the solo wasn’t more singable/tuneful.. It sounded very improvised. There’s nothing wrong with that. That’s just a matter of my personal taste. In every other respect, this is exactly the sort of music we listened to back then. This would’ve been late middle school/early high school for me. I can’t decide whether this reminds me more of fire house, quiet riot or if it’s a new rock band I’m supposed to know but forgot the name of. It’s great. Very well done.
I think this song was heavily influenced by RATT when it was created, if I remember correctly
Verses are Madonna/Lady Gaga (Respect Yourself/Born This Way).
Now you gotta upload the karaoke track 🤘
Hahah nice one :)
You guys look like you are really having fun! BeardStank and his chasing the mic lol. Which one was Jake? ;p
Who else is unironically singing this in the shower
If only you had released this under the name Thin Lizzio
I’m kinda knew on the guitar scene, been playing for a couple months now and I can play chords but I just don’t understand the pentatonic scale and what notes fit together I mean I can play by ear most the time and find what I like, but I just want a better understanding if anyone could help out??
I know critique hasn't been asked for, but I'm an ass, so here goes: the song and performance is freaking awesome, but it's let down by the mixing, which isn't bad at all, but somehow not flattering for this style of music. It makes it sound like a really good wedding band demo, where you have a clear and middle-of-the-road mix that fits equally well to rock, pop and jazz standards. Maybe you could do a mixing challenge and give a few of us loser nerds the chance to mix it? I'm not sure I could do as good of a job with it too be honest, because I don't know what the stems sound like, but I have some ideas and I would really like to try.
The riff is similar to the riff in unchained.
Got it down. Reminds me of early Ratt or Dokken
sexy song it is cant leave my head
hey Jake, how's it going?
Sir plz make a video on melodic minor scale
You can make a good Tool riff by playing it on low D string in drop D tuning and adding an odd time signature every measure
Winger, Skid Row, Whitesnake, etc. are all jealous!
