Abandoned Ghost Town Of Elkmont - Smoky Mountain Getaway

- Believe it or not, there's actually an Abandoned Town located in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Known officially as Elkmont village, this small section of cabins & cottages was almost extinct. The history behind it dates back to the 1800s, but thankfully there's some light at the end of this tunnel. So come along with me as we take a look at an Abandoned Town frozen in time. Enjoy
Please Note: Exploring Abandoned locations can be dangerous. I don't condone or encourage anyone to enter an Abandoned structure. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal and when possible, i seek out permission. I simply go to document its history before it's gone and leave things the way I find them. I assume all the risks & responsibility in doing so. Please don't attempt to do this on your own.

Hope everyone enjoys the look at this amazing place while it still looks all original.
Oh yes, very much
I love it! Would be cool to spend a summer there!!
It doesn't still look all original. Over 80% of elkmont has been destroyed. You only see what is left of the original town.
Sorry I've missed some of your videos, I'll catch up😁
I want to work on a little special project to send to you in the near future. Just alittle fun thing.
@jpvideos id loveta camp in one of em tho..... would b cool ta do that....but I loveta explore places and lern new stuff outdoor and stuff
Love this! The 1830 cabin was my favorite. I try to imagine what it would be like to live back then. Thanks JP!!!
That was a great place to vacay many years ago. People would rent them for the whole summer. Kind of like in Catkills. There were trout in the stream. Great memories of Elkmont.
I love old history. I always say, I wish the walls could talk & tell us the true history. And the people that stayed in the cabins. Love it 😁
Heartbreaking. They couldve used it for Veteran's Housing. Many would love to be Steward's of the Land
I think the same. I'm completely disgusted by how we'd rather let things go to complete waste than take care of our people.
Veterans house price is cheapest. Don't abandon. Now city high house rental and high house price make veterans and low salary people's group and low income family can't pay off.
@@williamhill2221 not only does that make little sense. You dont know what your talking about.
Veterans dont pay a Special price.
They also dont necessarily have low grade housing -Stephanie
@@lukegervais6257 where is your consciousness? Are you making service for people or money benefits?
@@lukegervais6257 that's reason why so many Americans low income family and low salary people's group and homelessness and veterans vote Andrew yang to make service for people. The national interesting is making service for people.
So, those given a lifetime lease for half the property's value were short changed when the leases were no longer renewed ? Yep. Government.
Sums it up.
Sadly, you are right!
My husband and I along with his mother went to Elkmont, TN. to attend the wedding of his brother and bride to be in May 2019. Such a beautiful area and the cabin aka Appalachian Clubhouse they rented for the wedding ceremony was nice! the old cabins in that area are there like in your video today. a lot of history and the small cabin you went inside was made for a small child who died.
I believe in the 1800s if I am correct. I love history and if you look up the history of Elkmont, TN. should have photos, etc. of how life was lived back at that time. Thanks so much for the video! :)
10:10 That extremely high ceiling , without a second floor puzzles me. I’m not sure how well the warmth from the fireplaces would work since heat rises.
Wow what a find. I just love your videos. You have quite an interesting life looking and researching details about your “finds”. I appreciate the time taken for all your photography, editing and finding out the history too as well as all the other behind the scenes chores. Thank you very much 😀
Thanks so much
As an artist living there and painting would be heaven!
Judith Ree Jones I agree I’m an artist 👩🎨 as well. I concur...
Judith Ree Jones I don’t paint bit I would be quilting or crocheting.
Absolutely amazing! Loved the 1800's log cabin with stone chimney and red windows, like stepping back in time.Thank you for the tour.
My pleasure
I really respect your work you put into these videos you do a superb & exceptional job, very thankful I found your Channel when I did. I look forward to much more. Have a blessed night. 🙂👍⛄❄
🤗
funny to see how real jp is with his content and not faking it that this ghosttown is haunted like some youtubers did great job and amazing footage jp greetings michael
Its gets old after a while when people claim that for views.
@@JPVideos81 true on that and you trying to keep the variation in your content and that makes it more pleasant to watch and keeps it more legit
@@JPVideos81The one's that get me, Young people with water for blood maintain they live in a log cabin all year round, Yet "wake up" and the sun is high in the sky,no condensation on the window's and the wood by the stove is still there! They really think the olde fogeys about 10% of their viewers know fakes they are and some have "come clean" and don't spend the night and it's at the bottom of the garden not in the middle of Alaska
Sweet 👍, I love walkin', & explorin' in old abandoned Ghost Towns JPVideos.
Really cool place, I hope they save most of it. Bloopers were funny. Gave thumbs up as always
😁
Awesome video. And the two older cabins were the highlight of it all, but the rest of the cabins were very interesting as well. Thanks JP.
JP, what awesome and beautiful cottages! Really enjoyed your video.
So cool beyond words. Glad they are being restored.👍👍thanks for sharing JP.
first off yess this got a thumbs up from me. I've seen several videos about this place, and it's nice to see an update on the place. if you research other videos you'll see some cottages in really bad condition, and it was stated the ones in really bad shape were going to get tore down. its just nice to see something saved rather then left to rot or just leveled and forgotten. Nice job Jay! Thank you for your time!
Thank you bobby
I just love the history... keep them coming, JP... Thankyou :)
Another AWESOME video Jay. I have seen numerous videos on this place and by far yours is the best. My wife and I actually visited this place on our honeymoon back in the early 1980's when it was still partially occupied. I was fascinated by it then, and still am. I really don't understand myself, I used to fall asleep in history class during high school...for some reason after I got married everything changed. I cannot get enough of history these days. I also thank you for doing a nice a respectful video instead of a "Haunted Video". Those get old real fast!
Thank you jon. I love history now too.
Great video, JP and very well produced. Loved the style, filming, music too
Thanks!
They have a place like this in Michigan. The larger cabins were shared by multiple families. We were able to reserve them that way and go with friends. Also, received a discounted rate. It was so nice to be in the thick of nature and still be comfortable. Thanks for sharing. This looked like it was a great vacation spot at one time.
I LOVE the small one! Reading some of the comments about the little girl it was built for, such a sad story.
Wat tha storie behind tha lil house???
@@koolkid1702 I read in some of the comments that a father was building it as a play house for his daughter but she passed away before it was finished
@@septembersurbanexploration3707 that realie make me sad.... I a kid still basiclie to.... would loveta have a realie Kool clubhouse cabin thingie ta play in
One of my favs thus far.. loved the tour and learning the history of the cabins ❤️ and of course the photo montage, always a nice touch...oh and the bloopers. ..good to include that bit of humour..Well done once again JP😉👍👍👍
😊
I'm SO glad they are restoring! Love the 1830's log, and the gnome home. ♥️
Really enjoyed this tour. Thanks for showing us around. Love the tiny cabin!!
Another incredible video, JP! I've seen several other videos on this location.
*Yours is definitely the best.
Keep up the great work... and have an amazing 2020!
Thanks so much
I have visited Elkmont many times in my life. This was always a favorite place of my parents to take us when I was younger. At that time some of the houses still were lived in. My parents used to stay at the old Wonderland Hotel that used to be there. It was always just a peaceful, relaxing place and not many tourist were coming there then. I think I could stay and never leave. It's such a beautiful place. It's still one of my most favorite places in the park.
It is sad that some cabins were torn down and not all of them are being fixed up. I hate to see anything old destroyed.
Great video. I really enjoyed watching. Keep up the good work!
So nice and peaceful......thanks for sharing JP.
What an interesting tour/place.
It seems to me I've seen this location on another channel in the past. The structures harken back to a simpler and less complex time. How relaxing it would be to sit on the deep porch, and contemplate nature.
Thanks J!
Can't wait! I finally get to watch a premier from the beginning.
Awesome
Big thumbs 👍🖒🤘up and luved the out takes, video & pics at the end.
Loved the video. Beautiful pictures at the end! BUT...those bloopers. 🤣 You should do a whole video of bloopers.
You may not stop laughing... 😁
Didn’t manage to be here for live chat. Seeing you walk into a house was waiting to hear Cliff tell you to get out of his house 🏠. Really enjoyed that so much. Thanks for taking me along
You're welcome
Fabulous video. Thanks for sharing!!
You're welcome
Thank you for the tour. I enjoyed it
Stunning! Those cabins look like they should be restored and used. It would allow families to enjoy life without electronics.
Loved how you filmed and explained things in this video. Really cool explore!
Thanks katie
Awesome video! You just popped up on my feed and got yourself a new subscriber. Can't wait to look over the rest of your videos. P.S. Love the bloopers!
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
Loved this one! So glad they are restoring some of them. 😊
Great video jp always supporting u
Love these! The little house was the cutest 😁 I could see kids up and down that road and in and out of the yards playing....what a family community it was I bet....great find
Nice job. I’ve seen this location done before but your video has all the history. Thank you
I appreciate you watching
I just found your channel. I love you video of Elkmont. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of your work. I am so intrigued with abandoned places. Thank you!
Thanks Kathryn
My favorite was the old 1800s log cabins. I'm a bit of a history nut.
Im right there with ya. The whole place was so beautiful.
Me too. Just wish I could of lived in that era vs. this one.
@@sassafraspaul7528 Everything was so simple back then, now everything is rush rush rush
Me too😍 its so unic !
I've seen other videos of this place. I did NOT like them. Yours was amazing! You kept it real and down to earth. You showed the beauty of the place and didn't get crazy with it. Thank you for making this an a amazing video to watch!
Thanks kelly
You took me back in time! Beautiful place! Love the area!
thank you for the tour. I love learning something new everyday.
Awesome video!
Your video is so clear and bright!
👍☺

A really cool place, JP. Love the cabins.
Awesome video JP. I love the history of that place
Ty
I've seen a few videos on this location and it is too cool. I'm glad you put your input on the location.
As for the bloopers, great fun addition. I'd say do a blooper compilation as that would be a comical video and always fun.
👍
Very cool place, and great video! The bloopers at the end was a nice touch too!!!😂
The part at the end where you almost fell over was priceless!!! Totally unscripted!!!
Awesome video. Thanks for all you do.
You're welcome
That place is amazing, it was probably really great in its day, love to have seen it back then. Thanks so much for the video and you talking about the history is a plus! Great video!
Ty
Great Video Love these kind of videos :D
What a great place to visit. The older cabins were pretty neat. Hope they don’t tear anymore down.
It's nice to see them renovating some of them. A really interesting story behind them, great job JP and awesome pictures !
👍
Eric McQuiston the story is the owners had a 99 year lease after the park was created and the owners were required to pend money on them yearly to keep them up and when the lease was up the park would not renew the leases and the owners were required to leave. I spent many suMmers days there and the park wanted to let them all rot and go back to nature. It’s such a shame.
Would be cool if restored and rented out again. Beautiful place.
This place & history is amazing. The little bitty cabin adorable! The stove-1930's Knox in last cabin, very interesting.Glad they are restoring some. I could go for vacation, probably never leave. Terrific Jay just Love, Love, Loved it!!!! :)
My kinda place to stay at too.
Thanks JP for showing us the beauty of what time used to be. I'm also thankful that are some buildings still standin and not all gone. when they are done beening complete I would love to travel and see myself. thanks again
Thanks for checking it out
Thanks for sharing Best tour 👍 Love the 1820 log cabin ♥️
That tiiiiiiin roof-rusted!!!😄🎶😄
The red 1830s cabin is awesome!!!
Hahaha.... at the Looooove Shack!
Thanks for sharing an amazing video really enjoyed it 👍
My granddaughter and I camped (tent) there in Summer 2015 to see the synchronization firefly. We ,and others, walk through the town at night. The next day we rode our bike and explored. Good to see the restoration
I have actually been hiking there with my family about 5 years ago. It is amazing that they were left to deteriorate. What a waste. One of the houses we went into still had cute little curtains in the kitchen window. Also we went into one that was right next to a creek. It was very cool - it had a big stone fireplace and built in bookcases. It also had a staircase leading to a second floor - we didn’t go up I felt it was too dangerous. The kitchen looked out to the creek. I will be visiting this area during Easter. I think we will have to go back to this place and take a look at the refurbishing that is going on. At least they are preserving some of the cabins. Thanks for such a interesting video.
Thanks for watching
Love the old wood floors and stone fireplaces. Thank you for the history. Enjoying this video very much. 👍🏻❤️🤗
Thank you so much JP! Enjoyed this very much...
Thanks debbi
What an incredibly beautiful place. Thank you for documenting this. Your videos are amazing.
Thank you so much
Thanks JP, this was really interesting.
How beautifully interesting. I would love to buy one of those and fix it up! I love the history attached, great job JP!!
😊
Great video! Thanks so much for sharing!🥰
My pleasure
Great video JP!! Usually every spring we take a trip down to the Smoky Mountains and drive the Blue Ridge Parkway. We live in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada (an hour north of Detroit). Haven't been in the last couple of years, but the next time I will definitely add this stop to our drive!! I never knew anything like this even existed, and we would often drive right through to Cherokee. I would like to see it as it stands now, before restoration. We have stopped at random log cabins before, but seeing this would be the gold mine for me!! Thanks so much for taking this journey and also sharing the information you were able to find!! The gnome house with the stone wall and walkway, fireplace - wonder what it was used for. So incredible. Like right out of a fairy tale!! Keep up the awesome work and stay safe!! Outtakes always fun way to wrap up!! Also too, loving the photo montage at the end!!
😊
I would sure like to see what they look like once they are finished.. and plus adding those little blooper mistakes at the end made me smile I have not seen those on any of my other video’s that I watch and I must say it’s a nice touch... I loved your video and thank you for sharing it with us..
Thank you
I just got done watching n i enjoyed your CZcams videos so much 🤗
Love how you talk through the videos that what draws to me 💯
Keep up it up 👍
Its my pleasure to show these places to you.
Awesome place! I'm glad to see they're restoring some of the cottages.

Awesome JP. Loved seeing this town.
😊
Love the history, awesome video.
Hi Jay, It really is a very pretty area, I can just imagine waking up in the morning hearing the river and the wind in the leaves, awesome. I'm sure I heard somewhere that the childs playhouse was built for a little girl who died before it was finished so her Father continued to finish it in her memory. Thank you for sharing. x
This was very interesting and cool....so glad they are working on these and not destroying them ❤️
This was wonderful! Appreciate the historical information 👍 The gnome house was fascinating 🏠.
So fantastic , think of the amazing summers and good times that were spent there. I’m sure amazing memories! Great video!
Families raised and memories made.
Awesome video loved the bloopers at the end me and the husband watch a lot of the video together
Thanks so much for watching
I've heard of this place and you've definitely done the best video on it that I've seen. Great job! All I could think of was how fun it would be to be a kid playing hide and seek through that area lol
😁
That's so interesting. Love this.
I would never have seen this place if you hadn’t visited so thanks for sharing. What a magnificent place. Loved the cabins and history. The Smoky Mountains are absolutely beautiful. Great video plus we got to see bloopers. Can it get any better 😂
Haha. Thanks lisa
Beautiful location. I thank you for what you do. It’s nice to see things like this that are not in my same state. Thank you shine for all you do
I can't wait to see this .....love the photos already . Love history ...will be a fun explore !
JP,
I hadn't seen the town,just the Cemetery.
Very nice videography!
Thanks,
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Such great cottages! I am so glad they are restoring them.
Once again hit it on the mark there Jay! This was not the place I was thinking of. There is an old resort or used to be like a huge hotel that got torn down in the Smokies. The stairs are still there. I think I would go look for the Elk mound campground and stay there for a while. Thanks for sharing the history 😊❤️👍
This is a really nice video. I really enjoyed it. I would love to see them restore all the buildings. You weren't kidding when you said there are alot of people there. Those metal roofs last a lifetime. I'm really into those old stone fireplaces. Its nick o mac from explore with ray nick o mac and steph. I just got a new phone so now I'm able to watch you from here. Had an old flip phone till a week ago.
Awesome! Thanks for checking it out.
A great video, thank you!
I loved all the river?rock fireplaces and chimneys. I'm a sucker for rocks, lol. Such a peaceful setting in this place and it's great that they are restoring some of the cabins. It would be a wonderful holiday destination. Great video, as always. Thx
Hi Jp wow this was truly an incredible location, you did an amazing job on gathering information for us to read along the way thank you,.the 1830s cabin with the red windows was stunning as was the other tiny weeny one nestled between the bigger ones, It will be amazing to see when its been all fixed up again🙂👍, but I do really love it as is, funny bloopers at the end
