My grandparents built a cabin in Elkmont that was close to the Wonderland Hotel. I was lucky enough to be able to stay in the cabin when I was a kid. I wish the national park would build new cabins and a National Park Hotel in elkmont.
Well that's awesome thank you for letting us know that! I bet you those were some great memories 🙂 that would be cool but I feel like it would be really Bittersweet to see the old ones go.
If you haven't already consider subscribing we have a lot more Smoky Mountain content coming. Thanks for watching 🙂
Thank you so much for telling the story of these Elkmont homes. The home that you showed at the beginning and end belonged to the Hale family, friends of my grandmother from Knoxville.
When I was a kid, our family would spend a week each year in August in this cabin, from the late 70s to early 90s. Even then, it was very nearly as simple and rustic as you see here. No heat, no AC, no TV. But endless fun and so many wonderful times tramping along Jake’s Creek, swimming in “Ye Old Swimmin’ Hole,” visiting Cade’s Cove, and hiking up into the Smokies. Very special place.
That sounds like an amazing childhood! Really sad that most kids will never experience any of those types of memories of playing outside anymore.
Where is Ye old swimming hole? Not sure I've heard of that.
I would have loved to have visited back then! Never got to see it when people were living there.
@@NickandRachel Thanks so much for your response. It really is sad that others won’t be able to enjoy the cabins anymore. It was wonderful to see them again in your video; every room brought back such memories. The one room that you decided to avoid where the floor was in poor condition was the room where all of us kids slept.
The swimming hole was a part of the Little River that had been dammed up (presumably by the Park Service). From our cabin, you would walk down the road (now Elkmont #2 Cemetery Access Rd.), past the rest of the cabins and the clubhouse, where it turns right and sharply downhill, shortly intersecting with the main road (Elkmont Rd.). Right at that T, across the street, there was a gate which led to a path leading back into the woods a bit, opening out into the Little River and the swimming hole. It was a favorite summer spot for the families in the surrounding cabins. If the water was high enough (it usually was), you could even enter just below the dam and go inner tubing down the river.
No problem! Appreciate you sharing these stories awesome to hear! They've done a lot of remodeling to The cabins now so pretty much every cabin there you can walk in.
I'm glad they finally stepped in and did something because they were just really falling apart. At least now when you go back to the park you can go on all the cabins and relive some memories 🙂
I'll have to check out the swimming hole! Always looking for fun spots in the Smokies
Tennessee really is a beautiful state! I've never heard of Elkmont before, but it's so fun to picture what decrepit old places were like in their Hayday. So cool you guys were able to explore inside too! 😊
It's a gorgeous place you should definitely check it out one day if you get the chance! Thanks for watching 🙂
I just went to the smoky mountains and didn’t make it to this part of the park, so thanks for the video! The town I grew up in is now a ghost town, too
Well hopefully you get to visit it on your next trip! This section of the park is one of our favorites. Crazy how towns can come and go like that. Only thing left is memories.
I remember you guys stopped here before, but I don't remember you being able to go inside. Tennessee has so much history 😍 Crazy to think they essentially push people out if there homes like this! 👋👋
- Ashley from Adventure Encounters
If you ever get a chance to visit that place definitely go it's really cool to see!
I love the accent...great video guys!
Thanks!
We've been in a lot of those homes, it is interesting that in a lot of them the entryway was for shorter people which leads me to believe these residents were a lot shorter in those days or they just didn't worry about the comfortability of the home that much, more so in Cades Cove. 👍👍💖💖
Yeah almost every door I have to bend over to get through. I think I think it's a mixture of both.
I love visiting old ghost towns. This was a cool one. Glad you found the rats nest. 😁 Neat to see the contrast between the 1830s house and the "newer" ones. Well done.
We really want to visit some of the ones out west! It's definitely a cool place to explore we enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 🙂
Ghost Towns! Sign me up! Great informational video
Really cool place if you ever get a chance to visit! Thanks for watching 🙂
No worries on the floors giving on those old homes. We explored every inch of them when we videoed there. The park service has done a great job of adding supports to the floors to keep them from failing any further. Before they owned it though it was a good hike to reach them and it really was truly abandoned deep within the forest.
We have been pretty cool to see it back then! Thanks for watching 😀
I had read somewhere where these people were allowed to be buried in the cemeteries of their churches on this property when they passed away. I can't be certain but supposedly that's true. Great Video, Thanks, Stay Safe 👍👍💖💖
Really hope thats true! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Very cool. Had never heard of it before.
Definitely a cool place to check it out if you're ever in the area! Thanks for watching 🙂
Love your videos. I started following y'all based on a friend's recommendation, someone I've known most of my life, who's known Nick a good portion of his. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

@@NickandRachel we are actually hoping to go to Elkmont tomorrow! Would it be cool to bring our ghost hunting equipment? We did see some of your other videos! Inspiration for future trips!!
@@JulieoftheShire there's videos on CZcams of people doing that. Awesome Hope you find some new locations to check out!
Cool vlog, interesting to see this Ghost town in Tennessee. wish to visit someday!
Glad you enjoy it hope you get the chance to see it one day it's pretty cool!
Really cool to see the insides of the houses. Definitely want to go there! Great tour!
You guys should check it out it's really cool to see that's definitely got to be one of our favorite areas in the park! Thanks for watching 🙂
What a great history about this ghost town. You are brave going in, I have seen movies start out that way. A couple going to a ghost town to film a CZcams video. Good to see that they were not vandalized like so many abandoned homes. I'm they didn't lock these places up,. But it is cool to be able to go inside.
Yeah I'm glad the park service is a great job keeping this place up! Hope it's around for many more Generations. Thanks for watching 🙂
Sweet video! Looks like a great place to visit 🤩
Really is a cool place to see! Thanks for watching
Ahhh 😍 love Tennessee!
No place like it!
Wow had no idea. U had me at ghost town
If you're ever in the area definitely check it out it's really cool! Thanks for watching 🙂
@@NickandRachel yeah!! Thank u
We plan to visit there in late Oct this year, in fact going to do many of the things you have shown us in your videos. Keep them coming
Hope you get the chance to make it during peak season! It's extremely crowded but if you come to this side of the park it's not as busy. Glad you enjoy these videos 🙂
Super cool! Its interesting how some seemed really nice or recently lived in whereas others were worn down and super old looking! Economic differences among the residents or maybe different years they were abandoned? We checked out Fall Creek Falls State Park over this last weekend based on your recommendation! We had a great time! Backpacked one night, stayed in the campgrounds the next, and checked out all the falls before we left. It was pretty rainy so the crowds weren't bad at all!
It really was a cool place to see! Some people stayed longer than the others. Awesome glad you guys got to check it out! Hopefully we'll be able to visit there again someday soon we really had a good time there. Thanks for watching 🙂
Thankfully the park service is preserving this site. We visited last year and really enjoyed. This is not the case in many areas and States due to the real estate value bump due to investors.
Very thankful they are preserving it there's a lot of history there and it needs to be protected. Thanks for watching!
@@rodneybrown6907 they demolished (or let nature demolish) the vast majority of the community.) They salvaged very few cabins and only in one area of Elkmont
So cool! We have a ghost town in California here, too. Love it! ❤ liked and subbed
We would love to visit the ghost towns out west they look beautiful! Thanks for watching and subscribing 😀
@@NickandRachel yes. 💕
Such a beautiful town to be abandoned.
Definitely an awesome place to check out! Thanks for watching 🙂
Thnak you for showing me around. Do you think 30 minutes is enough for a QUICK tour of Elkmont and a few of its cabins?
Your welcome! If you're really quick about it I guess you could. Definitely check out our 6 hidden gems in the Smokies video because there's some other areas around there you need to check out if you're going. If you haven't already consider subscribing we upload content weekly. Thanks for watching 😀
That's cool. Like you said, would be great to see the houses back in the day. Did you see any ghosts?
Oh yeah, I would love to seen it back then! No ghost lol Thanks for watching 🙂
Wish I could live there
I'm actually talked to some people who have lived there they said it was awesome!
Another awesome place i didnt know about. I really suprised they dont have a homeless problem in this area. I mean some of those homes are nicer than the ones in my town
It's definitely an awesome area in the park one of our favorites! The park rangers do a great job by keeping up the park. Thanks for watching 🙂
How often do you guys go there? You mentioned how this is in Oct. And last time I spoke with you, you were there in April also It's not a moon, it's a toilet seat 🤣
We try to go to the Smokies a couple of times a year. When we do go we have everything mapped out that we're doing so we can make the most of the trip. 🤣😅
The first time I visited the GSMNP a few of the houses there still had original owners who used them. There's nothing really unique or unusual about them. They were just vacation homes tossed up by middle class people from cities accessible to the area. No different than the cabins and townhomes that crowd in the modern Park boundaries and make for the horrible traffic you have to suffer through to get to the trails and back country. I've never understood the interest in Elkmont village except for people's fascination with rotting old houses.
Would have been cool to see back then! I think most people just think it's interesting seeing and abandon Street full of old houses like that
And also the history is pretty crazy as well. Thanks for watching!
I heard that on the out houses. The half moon means for the women
I heard something along that about fertility.
Elkmont is not a ghost town . It was a vacation destination for some people from the knoxville area ,during the depression .you can buy a very informative book at the visitors center on the history of elkmont .
Yes we actually go over a lot of the history in this video and the many others we made in the daisy town
Ghost 👻 🏠?
👻
Do we have water there ???
I mean the Little River runs right beside it.
It's a shame how the federal government took these ppls land that had lived here all their lives.. what's sad is they can come in and say this land is beautiful and needs to be a national forest.. they make that possible by taking these ppls land ,like it or not in the name of a national forest... Then can turn it into a rich ppls get away.. vacationers haven, with country club.... What happened to the ppl you ran off from their land, in the name of making it a national park... My family was from here
It is sad! From what I understand though a lot of these people lived there until they died and then the national park took over. They lived their rent-free as well.
We definitely could do with less government in our lives. But I do appreciate them saving the national parks and National Forest.
These places deserved to be protected and not have people trampling all over the place all the time or cutting down the forest. The Smokies is such a unique place It's the most biodiverse place in the US so it definitely deserves protection and I'm glad that no one is allowed to live there now just because of that. If they were the entire park would have been gone and torn down years ago.
