This Cemetery Is Hidden In The Smoky Mountains

- Located in a section of the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee sits a very secluded cemetery. I happened to stumble upon it while researching the area for another location that I filmed. Since I was in the area I decided to try and find it for myself. After following a long dirt road, I reached the end of it and followed a trail that led me deep in the woods. After getting an uneasy feeling, I decided to stop searching as I was loosing daylight. On my way back out I spotted a little path and sign showing me where the cemetery was. So before it got too dark, I walked around and showed what this hidden, creepy and odd cemetery looks like. So come along with me as we explore the hidden Elkmont Cemetery. Enjoy

Perseverance paid off! Would you visit this cemetery at night time?
Hell yes
Loved this cemetary, glad you found it. Coins were answered already in comments. It is a sign of respect for resting & family. Yes I would definitely go at night if I had the JP crew with me, not alone. Thanks Jay enjoyed it very much. :)
Yes! The Dead don't scare me as much as the living! 😊🤷🏽♀️😂💙💙💙
Only if I had someone w/me, like Alan. I would have more on me other than a knife and pepper spray!!! I think it would be fun, and it is within a short walking distance.
I would possibly but only with a friend or family member. I bet it's real creepy out there at night. Thank you JP for your determination, I'm glad you found the cemetery. 🙂👍⛄❄
a penny means that you visited, a nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, a dime means you served with him in some capacity.
Thanks for enlightening me.
Thank you for writing this as I was going to write the same thing. Also if a quarter is left it means you were with the soldier when they died. 🖐👻
@@marleneestabrook1999 A quarter means you were there when he died.
Linda Flanagan, interesting!!
Also, a quarter on the headstone means that you were there with the soldier when he/she was killed in combat.
As a granny I wanted to fuss at you for going alone ... but ........As a selfish old lady who enjoyed every intriguing minute I have to say " Wow " ....from the long drive down the lonesome road , to the dead end "fail "..... then back again to find the old mountain resting place , you had me on pins and needles....worried for you, but telling myself you did get out alive because we had just 'talked' to you this morning .on your live stream ...lol....( btw ...now I remember why I don't clean out my closet but every "ten years " what a mess ... ....thank you for another amazing video , Jay ..welcome relief from closet duty ..lol)
No need to worry, just want you to enjoy the content.
S R Shults was a beautiful little boy named Stewart Ray Shults .. His mother was Louisa Ownby and father George W Shults. He had an older brother and 2 sisters at the time of his death and one sister born after his death. There is an old picture of him sitting in his fathers lap in a family photo. He looks to be about 4 years old in the picture. Adorable child.
Thanks for sharing that ! ❤️
Yes! I found him on ‘Find A Grave’. He was an adorable little boy! It shows his youngest sister just passed in 1995
Veronica C - I added the photo to his page. I didn’t work on that cemetery, but I helped link the family together to make it easier when someone works on this family tree. I enjoyed doing it.
A coin left on a headstone or at the grave site is meant as a message to the deceased soldier's family that someone else has visited the grave to pay respect. Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited.
What she said 👆. It started out as a veteran/active tradition, but has been adopted by civilians as well. Rocks, shells, and other items are sometimes used.
The entry was a bit creepy, but honestly it is a beautiful old cemetery. It is certainly a calm and peaceful place to spend eternity.
Desi C my thoughts exactly 🍁🕯
JP This is the cemetery for the Ghost Town of Elkmont which is also a campground. The area became a national park and the town was abandoned.i
Lots of interesting old house, many with old growth wood siding.
There is a website for the cemetery listing everyone buried there.
I wish you were able to see the ghost town, but there is some good material available
on the web.
Thanks ever so much for a great video.
I didn't find it to be spooky, just a quiet place away from the tourist madness and a quiet tribute to the people who inhabited this area and lived and died there.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Thank you for the information.
Thanks for your input!
Thanks Frederick!! I'm gonna look & see if any of my ancestors are buried here, because I have Appalachian roots on both sides of my family. Fredericks too, lol.
I did a video on Elkmont just a few days before this one. I believe you watched and commented on it.
@@JPVideos81 I probably did, must have had a senior moment:)
Thanks,
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Hi Jay. I found this info on Google. I hope it helps.
Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited. A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, while a dime means you served with them in some capacity. By leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the service member when he/she was killed.
What a wonderful secluded cemetery. You’ve mentioned that a few folks passed away in 1918 which was the beginning of the influenza pandemic which last through 1920. I wonder if they died from that.
When I go back “home” and visit my parents and other relatives at the cemetery I’ve left a small rock or coin after saying prayers for them.
My family's land in Virginia has our own private cemetery with tombstones dating back to the mid 1700s up to the most recent one, my mom who i buried myself. I'll be there someday too. very cool to see these old cemeteries and wonder about the people in them. You're welcome to visit if you're ever in the Woolwine/Stuart VA area.
That is sooo cool! Sorry about your mom though. My ancestors date back to the 1600’s in Virginia. But I am born & raised in WA State. We’re almost brand new compared to VA! 🤣 Would so love to have a land connection to my history like that. Thanks for sharing.
Just think about what the earliest pioneers felt when they settled these backwoods. Not to mention the Native Americans. They didn't turn back. No telling how many unknown cemeteries and graves you walked on out there!
A sign of respect that they are remembered
Sure is a secluded place to rest peacefully.
Very interesting cemetery. It seemed very peaceful. Wish you had more time there. Super cool with a bit of creepy thrown in. Thanks again!
I'm so glad you found it!!! I was getting frustrated! Lol! Great explore!!! Thanks for sharing this! Be safe, my friend. Have a great evening, and see you in the next one!!! 🙋🏽♀️😄💙💙💙
I was frustrated too
What an amazing find! So much history there. The scenery is just so beautiful. Thanks for sharing JP.
Someone is keeping it up. Not overgrown with weeds, bushes, small trees.
The Elkmont campground probably looks after it.
It is now on National Park Service Land- so I’m assuming the Govt. handles maintenance. Or did anyway- if the funding wasn’t cut.
Cindy L more funding was secured so great news there. 🇺🇸
love these old cemetaries so glad you found it
Yay! You found it! I love this kind of exploring, spring will be soon!
Awesome video JP I love old Cemetery just Thank of the history and I really love your photos
Really enjoy your cemetery videos too JP!! Very cool cemetery indeed!! Very happy to see that you went with your instincts and turned and went back to your car!! Always follow your gut feeling lol 👍🏻❤️
Oh WOW! Love cemeteries! The older the better. I don't think they are scary, spooky, or "haunted"! Although, I do feel the presence of my loved ones in our family cemetery. Cemeteries tell fantastic stories. I place flowers on ~50 family graves each Memorial Day. To me, cemeteries are quiet, peaceful, and serene places to visit & linger.....and be comforted with warm memories❤. You did an amazing and respectful job of searching out and documenting this cemetery JP! You can visit as many cemeteries as you want!
Love this place. Camped in Elkmont campground in the 90s many times. Thank you for the memories
I think pennys mean visitors were there .
Hey man thanks for the awesome video 👍 always enjoy the content, great location ✌️
Thank you for allowing me to accompany you! I've enjoyed it!
I am so glad you found it I really enjoyed your video thanks for sharing 😉👍
What a calm, tranquil, peaceful little cemetery. I am so glad that you hung in there and did not give up. We still visit what would be my Great Aunt Coralie Marksberry when We can. We found her grave in a little church cemetery. She died in 1905 at age 5 years old from pneumonia. Thank you Jay, that was an awesome video.
Deb from Idaho~~~Oh, I LOVE these out in the woods so much. Thank you!!
Very good video, always remember sometimes little things have a big effect..
That's like the cemetery my dad and his people are in NC u have to park then walk the rest of the way its a heck of a hike up a mountain and secluded great video thanks for sharing stay safe ,✌️
This reminds me of the time my friends and I were at a park and we followed these trails through the woods, eventually we came to a part where the trail split off to the left and to the right (right went up a hill) we chose to go to the right and we ended up stumbling upon a very old cemetery. Some of the headstones said “baby” “baby boy” “baby girl” some were more detailed but they were very old I believe around the 18-1900s, we had almost wondered If they were from the old state hospital in the area.
Wow, I have just found your channel and can I just say that was fantastic. That would have to be the beautiful cemetery I have seen in a while. The seclusion was lovely, you can really believe the people there are resting in peace. I live in Australia and our history doesn't go back very far, although we have some lovely cemeteries. I would love to visit the southern states and I don't think I will be lucky enough to but videos like this allow me to be an armchair traveller. I was thinking is that bear country when you were walking down that track.
Thanks for watching
enjoy the cemetery reviews enjoy the old abandon buildings more i love to hear the history behind the people/area/building continue to do your scouting onward thanks for taking me along
What a beautiful old cemetery. So glad you found it. Thank you for sharing..........
I love exploring old cemeteries. Thanks for sharing this with us.

That is so cool. that piece of land surrounded by the woods..........so cool!! I am creeped!
Very peaceful cemetery love watching exploring old cemetery. Good stuff .
JP, beautiful cemetery and awesome video! Really enjoyed it!
Awesome JP! Glad you found the cemetery! 👍✌
Hi Jason .. im really glad you found the cemetery .. wow its so quiet there a really nice place to R.I.P. They place the pennies so that they can cross over with the ferryman or that's what i was told why they do it. Usually its on each eye before they get buried. This is an awesome find well done Jason you are amazing x
I’m so glad you are level-headed enough to trust your instincts!! That was getting pretty creepy back there....but that cemetery really was cool!! An interesting find....thanks
Thank you for finding the cemetery. Jon from Exploration Unknown has alot of local videos,he lives in Knoxville.I would love to see you and him get together and film. You both are the best!!
Our great video From Jp can`t wait for the next one :D
Hi Jp wow what a great find.. cool as setting to up in the mountains..
Love seeing weird things, old places, anything. Love seeing what things were so long ago.
WOW, wonderful video and awesome find, thanks for sharing.
In Australia, there are many cemeteries located in areas that are well out of towns, usually due to the town location being moved to be closer to the railway line which came through a few years after the town was originally established, this move occurred during the years of horse and cart and cobb and co. Moving towns closer to the railway meant easier access to supplies and mail for the town. Some cemeteries are the only remnants, barring a few scattered farmhouses, of old localities in which began as a town and no longer exist due to larger towns that prospered up to 20km or more further down the road. It's so awesome to find these locations. One such location that my brother and I went into a few years ago was a pioneer cemetery located nearly 8km from a town in far north queensland. The very undefined overgrown grassy track, into the cemetery is nearly 3km long, begins off the main road as a dirt track, lead us through gates into properties, when we found it, it was only a small quaint cemetery almost in the middle of nowhere. Was a wonderful find.
The above mentioned cemetery is at Tumoulin in QLD, another is the cemetery at Leadville, it is some distance from the town, can't remember the distance, but it's quite a long way, when we entered many years ago with family it was overgrown with farmers friends (also referred to as sticky beak burrs). Leadville in NSW was again a town which was moved most likely due to the railway line going through away from the original town locality.
This is a beautiful cemetery. So peaceful and secluded!!!! So glad you found it!
Great Vid. I have a Great Grandmother buried there Mary Watson Gray. That trail you walked on use to be a road that went right by the old Wonderland Hotel that set on the ridge across the road from the cemetery down above the river. The reason your meter was going off was because the park ran all the electric and phone lines and buried them under that old road over to Elkmont campground. There is another newer cemetery over above the campground near Daisy town. If you would like to visit some really isolated cemeteries in the GSMNP let me know. I can even tell how you can get to a haunted spring. Lots of local stories about that one.
So glad you found it! That was really cool
I love the video jay as always, especially when its at a cemetery one and its done by you too. Thanks jay.
Now that was incredible! Love old cemeteries, thanks!
Great video....an awesome find...!!!!
JP great video we have one weird in Uhrichsvile Oh . Theres been times people have stopped and seen kids in the road of the cemetery and people would stop and they would vanish and then we have a civil war part of the cemetery graves .They have tours of the cemetery here also around halloween time .Well its called Union Cemetery of Uhrichsville oh .But its been daytime when the kids are seen and also . Also we have the warlocks grave in New Philadelphia oh . We enjoy all your great videos you put on .
Very nice video of the old cemetery but scary at the same time , thanks for all your amazing videos, hug from Miami 👍👍
For fun I watch your videos now while holding a plastic mag glass that enlarges the picture but also makes it look alot like 3 D, like one is right there with you in person.
It's really cool ! And another nice adventure here. Never a dull moment in a JP video. Big 👍
I really enjoyed the video JP. I love history.
Really cool glad you found it. This place is creepy.
Brilliant! What a great place. love those spooky old woods.:-) I think the small unmarked stones were probably babies and a lot died back then. There must have been a township somewhere close by. Would be great to find that, if anything remains. Just wanted to also add that I love your style.S o much better than some of the others doing similar, who disrespect the past and the history...and never shut up..lol... i loved that quiet walk in the woods. :-) Thank you ...
What you said expresses my thoughts on this video perfectly. JP always does it right!
I enjoyed the video, very pretty, peaceful place I personally would not go at night. Thanks for another good video.
awesome video! Thanks for sharing.
Great video glad you found them and seems semi looked after

Cool video Jay . I need to visit Tennessee sometime. So beautiful. Nice touch going in the evening, but I must say, not alone, nope . Not the best idea . But , hey I enjoyed it.
Are you on fb? You should message me there.
Awesome find! I do believe there was an elk mount resort back in the hills are too. I wonder if this had any connection to that? You may want to go check out elkmont resort sometime.
Great video thank you for sharing
Interesting video, JP! The photos you took are great. You should definitely do a ghost hunt here at some point. I was reading some of the comments that were posted about the coins, which I never knew anything about. Pretty interesting stuff! Great video!
Wow JP another graet video. Love all you videos am not always. Writeing something but i do which you videos. Lots of love to you and your family
Ty
Great to see someone is still taking care of it.
Very cool, glad you found it.
I would love to visit this cemetery, even at night. I’ve spent hours in the dark late at night in a cemetery, but not all night. I was sitting in my car or hanging around the trunk. 😎It used to be a favorite thing of mine back when I was a teenager. Hey, I have never seen a K2 meter before now. I had to check out what it was for. Might be a good device to have when visiting cemeteries or old towns. I’m not sure what to think about that.😳 I bet there had to be a little camp or village in that area at some point. Wonder if those people for related or just good friends. That’s how some of the old cemeteries got started...Langdon Cemetery is filled with families and friends of the family. Good stuff! 🤩
Great video. Thanks 👍👍
I would probably have driven past it too! Glad you found it with some light left. Great video.
Very interesting. I can't believe it is better cared for then a lot of cemeterys in the city. Thank you for sharing.
I love exploring and finding hidden places like this! Just came across your channel and subbed great content thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited. A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, while a dime means you served with him in some capacity. Nice video and beautiful nature. I very much like your videos, no fake.
I was exploring the abandoned cabins near by one day when I found that cemetery. It is secluded but maintained. The ranger station in the campground has more info on it.
Elkmont was a logging and railroad community in 1800s. Later after railway was built people vacationed in the cabins that are now abandoned. There was a large white building there that burned a few years back. And they are beginning restoration on some of the little cabins. The activities building has been reatores and you can have b day parties or reunion etc there. Ive been to the cemetary there and me and my husband commented we felt like we were being watched. Its an interesting area.
Very small cemetery and yes a little creepy very hidden probably only the locals know about it. very nice video thanks for sharing.
Cool and fantastic!!!👍❤
Thanks for a very interesting video!
Beautiful Cemetery a very good video.
I love history and this was great. The trail you walked looks like it could have been a road before. I Imagine the rocks are there to stop people driving through from danger of falling trees. The cemetery looks well kept.after doing some research I found the names of people buried there. There are 7 member of the Trammel family. There is also a book written by Vic Weals “last train to Elkmont” There must be lots of old deserted cabins there for sure. Thanks for sharing JP great job as always 🙏
😊
According to some family research I have a great-great uncle, Costo Silas Trammell, buried at Elkmont. But the cemetery he's buried in looks to be a little closer to the campground farther back down the hill from this one on Google. It has a 3 names -- Levi Trentham Cemetery, Jane's Creek, and Elkmont. He was buried there in 2004, and was allowed to be because he was a member of the Friends of the Smokies. His wife -- Dorothy Parton -- her family had land that became part of the national park.
Great bit of history for sure. Must have been a lovely place to live.
Awesome find. This is something I enjoy doing, but I never go alone 🤣
Take me next time
It was a great cemetery, loved your video
What an amazing find, thank you for sharing.
You're welcome
That was pretty cool, but it was hard to see. Anyone could have missed it. It blended in. I bet there was something on that path you were on. It looked like a road once. Maybe even a town. My great grandmother was buried in the mountains in Tennessee over the border. My mom and I drove up this steep road; we didn’t think we’d make it. It took a good 15 to 20 mins. It was such pretty little cemetery, but never did find my great grandmother though. She may not have had a headstone.
I've heard of this cemetery but have never seen it. The Ownby family, and Ogle family were some of the first families to settle in the Gatlinburg area, and the small stones usually belonged to children. There are alot of Ownby names in there. I googled that, and found alot of them were very young but no one is sure why. Another cemetery is the Greenbriar. The Gatlinburg cemetery is supposed to be up off Ski Mtn. Rd., I have heard. There is one closer in town, you go through the Village, to the restrooms and just past that is White Oak Cemetery.
Really interesting video that you made.
czcams.com/video/mjJfd1akx0E/video.html
Wow beautiful place to be laid to rest. Thanks for this.We go to the Smokies a lot year round because we live about 1 hr 30 mins away.Gatlinburg is my favorite

I love this cemetery and am grateful for those who maintain it so that those resting there will not be forgotten. Maybe there used to be a church nearby.
Thanks for the video
Cool location! I love old cemeteries!
Sweet 👍! What a find JPVideos 😍 sweet 👍 👍!!!!!!!!!!
Nice place JP, Thanks
Awesome! 👍☺
A beautiful, peaceful place! Those are my Ownby families buried there. ❤ There is another cemetery at Daisy Town (Elkmont) across the creek from the parking lot.
Wow, truely buried in the woods.
Awesome!!
