    Is Asus Strix Scar 16 with RTX 4090 and i9-13980HX the best gaming laptop of 2023? Maybe. It is clearly an absolute monster machine, especially for its 5.5 lb weight. But how well does it perform? Can it match the larger Scar 18 in a smaller form factor? We'll be testing the display, unboxing it, removing the bottom, internal analysis, benchmarking the Scar 16 with Timespy and Cinebench R23, and then we'll play a bunch of games too! Highly considered the 4090 Legion for a purchase since the value is so great. And of the 40 series laptop gpus, the 4090 along with the 4080 both have more than 8GB of VRAM. I think it's important to have more than 8GB of VRAM moving forward since games will definitely require more. But with the changes to the gen 8/2023 model (decreasing quality of life features) and my budget, I ended up with the top spec'd Legion 7 gen 7 model from last year i9-12900HX with rtx 3080 Ti for about $1k less than the current top spec'd gen 8 model.

    HI, really loving the review, In regards to the screen caparison, i really noticed a major clarity difference, strix being so much more sharper/crisp in the games, really obv in the bar scene in cyber punk. or the colors seems quit different in some of the games. are the types of screens that different? for a cost diffrence of around 900$. the cost being 2,789.99 for legion now and 3,699.99 for the strix. is it really that different when your playing? trying to justify the extra $$ for the screen

    I have been very confused with the scores that you have received with the scar 16 I currently have a GE78HX with a 13950hx and have been consistently getting 18700+ on my TimeSpy CPU scores. Timespy is a quick burst style benchmark. The GE78 can push a higher for a quick burst. Also, very little difference between the i9-13980 and 13950.

    Have the Legion 5 2020, and taking it apart is always a pain. Same problematic area. The ROG Strix G16 is very easy to take apart. For me Legion is better for work with the numpad. Both are great. Got it with the RTX4080 and i9 13980HX, the RAM is Samsung 5600 from factory. It is great for work. With the Legion 5 (AMD 4600h) I could knit a sweater and get a coffee, when importing vector graphics files (can be thousands at a time per job). With the G16, it is literally seconds. A very nice gaming/workstation. The only two thing I´m missing is the numpad and ports at the back. The webcam is God awful LOL.

I do not game a bunch, but I have not encountered a game I cannot play. Also, I like the keyboard. It is very responsive. The screen is bright and crisp. I would say for you to call Lenovo and haggle on price/options. I have tried ones from Asus, Samsung, HP, Lenovo, and Acer. For me...I have found the Lenovo 7i to be the best for my needs. It has enough RGB, but nothing over the top. If there is a drawback, there are 2 USB-C. Only one carries power. That is the port in the back deck of the laptop. Outside of that, it is great. I know your comment is old but just in case you haven’t worked it out yet. The reason the screen goes black is when you unplug from mains power and go battery only the screen will go black to adjust from the higher htz to the lower 60htz to save on battery life. The screen “blacks out” for a few seconds during this process. A heap of laptops do this not just Asus and it’s totally normal while transition to lower htz takes place to conserve battery life. @muuz6578

      Unfortunately I can't post links to the results because Google / YT keeps censoring it

    This video appears to be made up of various separate reviews. Overall, it looked like the Legion 7 pro smacked the Scar pretty hard in every category except the screen. Lower temps, better performance, better build, better ports location, cheaper price, and unlikely to get coil whine that Asus adds to their laptops. Watching the gameplay on my oled phone, the only game where I saw the Asus colors pop was in the witcher. I thought the Legion screen looked better in the other games. It's cleared up a lot of my 1% lows in games like Hogwarts Legacy and Jedi Survivor, both which really are impacted by RAM speeds when it comes to stutter/1% lows. @@Dserebrakov they are all pretty similar in terms of perceived brightness, but the Scar 16 hits the 240 hz QHD+ sweet spot for resolution and game performance. The Legion 9 and Blade 16 being high resolution will be more valuable to some people who arent as focused on gaming

    Due to the screen, the temperature increases by about 5-10 degrees which is Asus Mini LED, but in terms of performance, I saw Legion better. If you game less, Asus is a good option. When it comes to gameplay, Legion seems more logical. Asus color quality is very superior, even legion could not show some effects, it is obvious that Asus does not build only on games with this model.

    Shouldn't have ignored the outrageous qc issues on Asus this year. There is almost a 50 percent chance you will get a machine with coil whine which is simply unacceptable. You can't work with that static buz. It will drive you mad. On the other hand Lenovo is quite as a whisper in silent mode. Even if both are priced same, I would still consider Lenovo. Plus the vapour chamber has done better job in cooling the machine. Screen is the only department where scar outshines legion.

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Coilwhine is annoying if you are a noise sensitive person. The coilwhine on my unit would not be that noticeable if I had fans going at all. But I do prefer not to hear it at all, which is one of the reasons I did end selecting the Blade 18, since it is so great in the fan noise and quality speakers departments.
      I have heard some people's coilwhine went away over time, and from a recent buyer who said there was none. I had several reports of coilwhine in a row at launch though... Not good.
      My biggest concern for my Blade 18 is battery bloat and the flickering while in hbyrid mode. Going to have to see what happens with that.
