Pioneer DJ XDJ-XZ vs DDJ-1000 - Which 4 channel Rekordbox controller is best for you?

- As the newest Pioneer DJ controller XDJ-XZ boasts a 4 channel mixer in rekordbox and Serato modes, as well as standalone features, the question has arisen; "Why go for the XZ when the DDJ-1000 offers the same 4 channel feature?". So, it was time for a head to head comparison!
Product Specialist and regular Rat Cave resident Sami swung by The Ratcave to assist Ratzi in comparing the features on the XDJ-XZ in controller mode, against the OG and flagship DDJ-1000 rekordbox DJ controller.

Ddj 1000 personally for me as a mobile Dj who works every weekend. Both are beast but I prefer to go lighter not heavier. Keep in mind I have a pro x case for my DDj 1000 I can’t image how heavy this big boy is in a hard case.
Exactly what I was looking for and super informational. Thanks guys
Glad it was helpful! Don't forget to sub!
Great breakdown guys!
Outstanding video guys, loved this video. I think ill wait for XZ2 to come out
I think a few people are waiting for that! 😄
Thanks for the comment! Don’t forget to sub for more!
I've heard you might be waiting until 2025 at the earliest
opus quad
Still waiting 😅
Both controllers are really good, but despite being a bit pricey, I think the XDJ edges out against the DDJ by being a standalone controller. You can also use it with both rekordbox and serato.
Wait are you saying i cant use beat pads of the DDJ XZ as a sampler bank??? Please help
Bravo on the review. When will Serato be available? Will it work automatically with Serato it will it work in HID mode?
the ddj 1000 has its Serato version, which is the ddj 1000 SRT
Isn’t the Xz 64 bit dsp? And the 1000 24 bit?
Great video. I'm trying to decide between these two units. I'm an old school DJ...I've had the same 1200s since the 90’s and they're still set up in my loft. It has been an internal battle for me for evolve into this digital world...i bought CDJ1000s kicking and screaming.
My question is: how good is the waveform view on the XZ? I just used rekordbox on my laptop for the first time ever today...first time seeing a waveform while I was mixing. Pretty neat. How does the visual experience compare from the XZ to a laptop? Thanks!
As someone who gigs weekly on an XZ, the waveform view is pretty damn good. As long as you analyze your crates properly and ensure your beat grids are quantized and in order it works like a charm. You also have the option using the knob on the side of the screen to zoom in and out of the waveform which really comes in handy.
Great video, Thanks guys
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Best review comparison I've seen, really thoughtful. I am still confused, however now it's less about should I upgrade to the Z from my 1000 it's figuring out do I really want to venture into standalone or am I satisfied with using my laptop where the 1000 is more feature rich and integrated.
That's the big kicker really. You need to decide if you want to move away from the laptop or not!
It's better to not have a laptop. lol
Laptop just gives you more on the fly options. For example doing requests is easier.
@@DJ_CJ_NL yeah i mean for music requests even with a stand alone like this one with 4 channels on the mixer you can use one of the free channel to plug in an rca/aux cable and plug in your phone/tablet to put requests from spotify if you need and you can use fx on that channel so even the transition will be smooth
What about the sound card? Do they have the same sound card?
Wouldn't the XDJ running USB is more stable than a laptop? I returned the DDJ and order this XDJ cause the DDJ track would do a weird sound click every time I load a second track in Djay Pro AI. Wish XDJ jog wheels have its own browse button instead relying on one button for both.
In the the U.S. the DDJ-1000 is $1,200 vs the DDJ-XZ which is $2,300 - so $1,100 to use a 2channel USB standalone.
Now that's what we want to know 👍🏿$2300 they trying to break fools 😓
If you have any cdj's etc you link them up and use 4 channel. No computer required. Laptops are slowly dying out so its matter of keep up.
@@presslee9303I agree 100% with you- that's why I believe Denon took huge steps the last two years making true standalone units. Units thats can analyze tracks on the fly without the need of a laptop - something Pioneer's flagship units XDJs or CDJ-3000 are still not capable of doing.
@@Ziggy_v2 I agree denon have done laps round pioneer, only issue is all the clubs will continue to use pioneer so familiarity is the issue unfortunately.
Or to use with record players...and you can record your sets.
Something that is not mentioned in the video and that I think is relevant is that, by being more similar to the CDJs usually used in clubs, the XDJ is possibly a better "training ground" for a DJ practicing at home in preparation for gigs? Just a thought. Would be great to hear people's views.
Been a Traktor controller user since 2006...... I thought the same as you......XZ is the better home option if you play out in clubs.
yes cause in the club you play off USBs
It’s exactly why I take a look for this xz but I’m not sure we can use it in real 4decks reakorbox. I didn’t see a switch deck on it where ddj1000 have it. Can we switch easily for deck 1 to 3 and 2 to 4 ?
@@SianTubeyou can’t use 4 decks with USB which a lot of people don’t mention . You can use 4 decks plugged into laptop + RB or by linking 2 external CDJs ..
@@nofood1 + rb, do you mean ddj rb ? Impossible to use 4decks into laptop just with this controller ? Like ddj 1000
Still a valid comparison since there is nothing new that really compares in the Pioneer product line with full size jog wheels. Something not really mentioned is that you can run standalone off one or two USBs, you can use the Pro DJ Link with Rekordbox in Link Export, and you can use USB for Controller Mode with Rekordbox Performance so you have 4 ways to play music and transition between DJs if need be, we have rotated between 3 DJs this way without a single issue. I use my XDJ also with two XDJ 1000MK2, using the built in ethernets so i can have 4 decks all sharing the same USB or laptop with Rekordbox link export. The XDJ hands down is better if you want more options playing in different settings, vs strictly using a laptop. Also every have your laptop crash, or battery die, and having USB Flash drive as a backup to play music can save your party. For the mixer section there is no comparison, XDJ easily wins, just the x-pad alone and engaging effects by pushing or sliding your finger on the x=pad makes it easy to add effects to your mix. If was limited on space or need portability with a controller that has full size jog wheels DDJ all day. But I wanted a rig that mirrors a club setup or wanted to play standalone and not have to stare at a laptop to search for me next track XDJ hands down, its a beast.
Haha adding to the laptop crashing, some dj’s may forget, laptops heat up quickly in direct heat which gives standalone units the edge
@@SLIC3R2 I agree and i still personally don't use controllers because i hate using a laptop to play music. But if you are using Beatport Link, you can access an entire library of music to play vs having to buy/download and prep tracks. I would never do that for a gig but for just making mixes sure why not.
Djkit! Question!
If I don't mind a laptop plugged in. Should i go for DDj 1000 or xdj rx2?
If you are planning on using the laptop all the time, the DDJ-1000 has more features.
What would you think is a good upgrade from the ddj rx, looking to play in clubs eventually
Either one of these controllers is great for that, as they both mimic Pioneer's club style set up!
Great video
So I'm a producer who's in the market to start getting into the Pioneer ecosystem. I'm just messaging to make sure I make the proper purchase. I've been looking at the XZ and it seems to check the bases but I want to verify since I'm not too familiar with all the in's and out's of their system. I'm looking for something to practice on at home and that will transfer directly into using other flagship Pioneer setups. The XZ seems to be that am I correct? I just want something that gives me 90% of the functionalities at half the cost so when I step into a professional booth or stage that I'm not lost up there trying to figure anything out. I want to be able to throw the USB's in and just play.
Yeh me too. The XZ is the one for that. Just need to sort music files in Rekordbox software before loading them to USB to get full functionality with BPM, cue points etc.
More than the double Price is not that much xD
But i think you helped me by the Decision
🤣🤣🤣
There really needs to be a Pioneer DDJ-800SRT for those of us who use Serato and have no use for 4 channels, I do not want to pay the extra money for 2 channels I would never use and the extra size 4 channels require does not appeal as it makes the unit less portable. If Pioneer can make a 1000SRT it probably would not be difficult to produce the 800 Serato version and offer a wider product range.
so in "controller mode"/"rekordbox mode" can the xdj-xz use all 4 channels from one source (a computer)? thanks
Yes, you can use all 4 channels in Rekordbox and Serato!
If you are looking into pairing one of these with another two players for 4 channel mixing (xdj700 or 1000), which one would you go for?
It depends if you want to be using 4 channels in standalone mode, or using the extra players in HID mode with rekordbox!
@@djkit most likely would be standalone. Not opposed to having a PC running but if I can have one less piece to worry about, I'd like that.
I'm confused, you mention using the XZ as a 4 channel Rekordbox player but I was lead to believe that wasn't possible. Can you clarify please?
You can use 4 channels in rekordbox!
@@djkit Damn, now I have a harder choice to make again!
@@djkit in serato same
DDJ 1000 + intel nuc (Windows 10) + 13” external touch display = better All in one than the XZ tbh
Can add a 2nd display as well on rekordbox. If you wanted.
make a tutorial
@@jaimegpl11 i shall do
I like your line of thinking. Do you have ideas or a link that would show how to use the best DJ laptop stand up above the DDJ 1000 ?? I'm wanting to make it a above board instead of an on board screen. But up high enough where I can almost see it different to my face if need be as my eyes age lol. itd be on the left side but not quite in the way of the left jog wheel. I just want to keep a little bit of room to where I can see the board from up above and allow someone to scratch if need be.
Don't have the space. All in 1 will do for me.
And the cost of that?
can you play via phone on DJ 1000? If yes then can Spotify be used or have to be local phone media player ?
Hey! Spotify isn't compatible with any DJ softwares I'm afraid!
Is Pioneer going to release an XDJ-XZ MKII in the near future. Something perhaps that has an updated screen like the Prime 4?
Only time will tell on that question! It would make sense for them to release a new unit with a screen to match the CDJ-3000!
@@djkit Thank you kindly. I love the Rat Cave! My luck, I will buy the XZ and they will release an updated one the next day! Cheers from Denver, Colorado US.
One more mate: In this video was the XZ connected to the 1000? I own the 1000 and want the XZ. Can they be connected so two DJs can play together on each system?
Mate whats your opinion xdj xz or denon prime 4 or xdj rx2 , new to this thanks mate
That's a big question! It all depends on your needs really. How many channels do you need? Are you planning on adding some more decks on to the set up down the line?
Ended up buying a denon sc6000 yesterday , thrown myself right in the deep end 😂
i hope Pioneer brings a new DDJ 2000 someday with the Features that the XDJ-XZ have .and the full Controll for Rekordbox dj as already with the DDJ 1000 :) i was owning a ddj 1000 for a short amount of time but i had to resell it again sadly :( , but i would be struggling now on which from both i should chose now :) when i would make the plan to buy a dj controller from Pioneer again .
in my opinion the XDJ-XZ looks more like the state of the Art Clubstandard CDJ and DJM Set and have almost the same replica Features from ,where the DDJ 1000 is Looking unique a bit and i guess its a Mix of CDJs and DJM 700 Mixer .
No the ddj1000 is identical almost to cdj2000s and a djm800 mixer.
I'm using a ddj-sx right now and looking to upgrade. I have a opportunity to get a ddj-sz or a ddj-1000 for the same price. Which do you think I should get?
It depends whether or not you want to use Serato or Rekordbox!
Serato
can use 4 channels in serato? because in usb no, just 2 channels :(
Yes, you can use 4 channels in both Serato and Rekordbox!
Thanks 👍 guys....

ddj 1000srt for me looking to get it this week ( my frist controller ) and yes i am just going all out. was a d.j out of new york city over 35 years. have over 100.000 records. it time to move from my ( 1200 mk2s ) to a controller. ( what do you think )
Hey Buddy, Chester from Aust. im in the exact same sitch. DJing in the Sydney Scene for over 20 years, love my 1200's but i also love what you can do on the controllers, im going the to buy my first controller, the DDJ1000 rather than the SRT version, but fuck me, i was thinking about starting with the DDJ 400, i just cant doit, 1000 all the way. go hard on the mix.!!!!
srt hasnt has the cool screens on the jogwheels 😟 it looks so much cheaper while its the same i just love the ddj 1000 more
ive been djing for 41 years now, still using the same sl1500mk2's , fo the cash to be able to mix vinyl, or have the option of dvs, coming from just a mixer, to get the fx, and all else included in 2020, is a no brainer. the phono outputs are sh*t though. pioneer even admits it. to get better audio, you must use a preamp. a good choice, arte pro audio dj pre2. it has 100pf, and 200pf, to maximize dj dype audio stylus outputs, under $100 uhm uhm uhm uhm uhm uhm uhm uhm uhm uhm those r my 56 yr old abs. and yes, i know im an asshole evolve, dont get old .
@@chesterwayn6208 indeed my brother indeed

No Serato fx controls on the xz, to be seen...
Thanks a lot ☺️
You're welcome 😊 Don't forget to sub!
The XZ has more than 6 filters. If you turn down on Sweep it becomes a Gate. You can also now switch between control decks by pressing the Shift button twice, instead of using the screen menu. And FLAC files are now supported.
If you were starting out and are buying controller and narrowed it down to these two! which would you go with?.
@@dsdlinvestmentltd674 the XZ all day. It's features are the closest to industry standard club / doof setups. That means that all your practice will translate to the real world very well and you will feel comfortable using Nexus hardware.
I think the ddj1000 is better for home and portability. The nice thing about the ddj series is that software enhancements can be bettere realised via the laptop. Whereas the smaller 7” built in screen on the XDJ will be outdated as se have already seen with the newer 10” screen on the sx3. Unless you really need something independent from a laptop , id go the ddj1000 every time.
damn
the XZ is Huge!!
Seeing as most clubs will simply have a 2 CDJ + mixer set up, I can't understand why anyone would favour a midi controller (unless purely for fun / parties.. And even then you're going to be hauling a laptop on top of the DDJ so it'll be near enough the same bulk) 🤷🏻♂️. The XDJs do a pretty good job of simulating the club default set up (for far less money)
Should I upgrade my xdj rx1 to a ddj 1000 or save up for a xdj xz?
Two completely different beasts! The natural progression would be up to the XZ as the DDJ-1000 isn't standalone like the RX1 is.
@@djkit alright thx I'll do that!
XZ 100%
When starting out which one would you go far?
It all depends on budget and whether or not you want to use a laptop or not!
If you can afford the XZ get it!
I can’t decide. I am still newbie and been mixing on DDJ400 which is a nice little controller but I want to get 4-channels and start preparing for club play. I like XDJ because it’s pretty much your typical Nexus setup and I can practice playing with USBs, with a standalone screen and all that jazz. What I don’t like about XDJ is that it’s bulky as hell and costs almost twice as much as DDJ1000 while not really differing much. I mostly mix and practice at home and I like the laptop setup but I feel like I’d be missing out on standalone practice if I’d go with DDJ1000 and it could mess me up in the club environment, at least for the first few gigs.
Someone mentioned that I can get a new laptop (which I need) and DDJ1000 for the price of XZ which honestly seems like a way better deal. But I am also afraid of messing it up on real Nexus setup and not knowing if I’d like to move to standalone in the future. We are talking about a 3-5 year investment with this purchase, so that’s why it’s so hard to decide.
What do you guys think, which option is better and how can I prepare the best for club play?
IMO its probably best to get the ddj-1000 and get a few sessions with the cdj somewhere else.
The ddj1000 is good enough for any type of djing.Yes, the other unit look’s good.but I think it’s good to get to use the rekordbox software and master it .because you still have to use it with the xz anyway when it comes to music.or using the 4 channels.if money was not the problem I would get the full pioneer set up for my bedroom.but money is a problem for me so I have to be realistic in my thinking.it is what it is lol
@@KCBRYAN_1525 I had a full DJ setup with 4 CDJ 2000 NXS and 900NXS2, sold it all for 10k bought the XDJ for 2k.. Don't miss my full setup at all, the XDJ way easier to transport and hookup, than 2 flight cases and a mixer bag plus cables.
Those eq and filter knob look different for a reason. They sound different, should have given emphasis on that instead of their color.
What do you mean by this? I haven’t been able to find any comparison on sound. Could you expand by chance? Thanks!
on the XZ You can double click the shift to switch between dual deck features
@UNDER THE RADAR You might need to update the firmware :)
This only works in laptop mode
@@makisekurisu8078 The only time you would need to switch deck is in laptop mode, If you were in standalone with a 3rd and 4th deck you would have physical decks to use. :)
Is there any difference in sound?
no
Yes!!
used them both. XZ is dope
So you prefer the XZ?
If only the XZ would have 4 channel standalone functionality... that would be my dream
If the XZ had 4 channel standalone capability, no one would ever buy a CDJ ever again.
@@djkit yeah i know haha that's why it probably will remain a dream. No way i will ever have the money for 4 cdj's and a mixer, but a man can dream
*Rekordbox or VirtualDJ or DjayPro can work with the DDJ1000
Thanks for the comment! Yes, since this video was shot, the DDJ-1000 is now compatible with both Virtual DJ and Algoriddim Djay software!
haha. I love the reverb on your vocals.
Hey, thanks! Everyone loves a bit of reverb, right? 👀👌
the DIFFERENCE is one costs £1000 and the other COSTS £2000 , obvious which is which ;-]
What are the best add ons for the DDJ-1000 in order to utilise the 4 channels?
Bro just plug anything in
@@fredtheman211 can you play via phone on DJ 1000? If yes then can Spotify be used or have to be local phone media player ?
If I understand correctly, you'd need a PC with Rekordbox to be able to use 4 decks on XZ?
Yes. Or connect turntables, cdj’s...
Yes, you can go 4 decks on rekordbox or Serato DJ Pro, or you can connect extra hardware to the mixer such as CDJs, XDJs, turntables etc!
Honestly the only reason im going with the DDJ1000 is because it has new FX and more pad functions. And ofc the price difference. I know 2 channel stand-alone is not that impressive but hey. If it had same FX and pad functions as the 1000 then fuk yea id pay more and get that bigger unit
The XZ is 4 channel when you use it with Serato or rekordbox. Both units are amazing!
From 2019 until now im still happy with DDJ 1000 and DDJ XP1 rekordbox..for me DDJ XZ its expensive
The XP1 is a great add on to any rekordbox set up!
Please i want to buy it
Then buy it
I will buy both XZ for at home and the 1000 for mobile 😉
The best of both worlds!!
so which bank shall we rob to afford them both? 😂
You can tell it’s connected to rekordbox look at the bpm on xdj Xz 173 wooow !! That’s some fast dancing or maybe it’s really suppose to 86 bpm
That's the typical BPM for drum & bass!
I still say the XZ is an oversize and overpriced version of a 2 channel stand-alone. The Prime 4 is a TRUE 4-channel stand-alone. Pioneer dropped the ball with the XZ. If I want a 4 channel stand-alone, that is what I should be paying for. Even though the DDJ 1000 is a controller that needs a laptop, the 2 features for me stand out above the XZ. 1. it is a 4-channel controller. 2 you can use 2 laptops at the same time. If you are a DJ who travels and uses a controller for gigs, having 2 USB ports is awesome. As long as the other DJ has Rekordbox software, you both can do a tag set using your tracks in RB. That's a game-changer. If I decide to buy a stand-alone, I would choose the Pioneer RX3. As far as 4-channel controllers, I would upgrade my DDJ 800 to the DDJ 1000 so I can learn how to play with 3 or 4 decks.
Pioneer have no need to make a 4 channel standalone. Denon are playing catch-up and trying to gain market share hence why they are putting all the bells and whistles into their P4.
If pioneer made a 4 channel standalone, a lot of people wouldn't even glance at a CDJ/DJM setup. It'd severely hurt their sales
I finally brought the ddj 1000 best upgrade
What a beast! Enjoy!
If you use a program like Virtual Dj, you can use all 4 channels If you turn on a 4 deck skin. Then you just have to hit the shift button twice to navigate back and forth between decks 1 & 3 (left side) and 2 & 4 (right side)
Nice tip, thank you!
@@djkit your welcome 😈
Why no one know you can hit the shift button 2 times to switch the decks on the xz?
@UNDER THE RADAR To switch between virtual decks.

The xz actually YES have sampler mode and you control the volume with the trim of the aux channell
That's not a sampler! It's just the Aux input!
I know but if the xz is connected to rekordbox with a laptop in performance mode you DO have the sampler mode and you control the volume with that aux trim channel... i have the xz
Just click shift and Beat jump and it goes to sampler mode...

XDJ-XZ 1000% all the way baby
The only downside of the XDJ-XZ it doesn't have the sampler.
Yea, that's a shame, but you can always add in the DDJ-XP2!
one of the main things that made me hate the 1000s s the build quality. its so plasticy and i never seen a dj who own one has is still without any issue or defect or dents all around
For the price of the xz you could just buy a mixer and two xdj 700s and in my opinion that's a better trade
