  • The Bronco tie rod issue is something that almost everyone has heard about, but I don't believe the full truth has been shared about the issue. In this video, I am going to discuss the root cause of the weak Bronco Tie Rods, as well as what I feel is the correct solution for it, which in my opinion is the Icon Tie Rod kit and the 74 Weld end cap replacement.

    I’d rather the tie rod break than the rack. Grab a few tie rods from Rockauto and the tools necessary for a trail repair.

    • @OFFTHEGRIND
      @OFFTHEGRIND  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah absolutely. But if you plan on doing a lift and bigger tires, the steering rack and components have to be addressed. If you’re wheeling at least.

    I also have a Badlands , Sasquatch bronco. I did the complete BroncBusters steering upgrade. Tie rod braces, Passenger side Billet housing and driver side bushing. I honestly do not see the need to upgrade the whole rack. Tyler at BroncBusters extensively tests the braces with much bigger tires than my stock 35s.

      Every build is going to be different and every person is going to use the vehicle different. I think a full rack replacement is certainly not for everyone though I agree with you there

    We started out with the BroncBuster tie rod braces, steering rack inner bushing and billet housing end. I ending up getting Icon Tie Rods as well. The only downside I saw with the braces was the inability to re-align without removing. I'm also kept the stock units with the braces as my backup just in case moving forward.

    Great job with the information in this video! I like that you mentioned a company and didn't just throw out some cons about it but actually took the time to explain what the differences are and how to go with a better fix that honestly Ford should install!

    Love the video. Ended up with Icon Tie Rods and the RC bushing as a band-aid for now. Did some rock crawling and off-roading in Moab and CO but definitely feel anxious knowing I'll eventually have an issue. Hoping to do the 74 Weld sometime early next year. Love the content!

  • @NorthShoreOverland

    Right on. Some great info. For now I"m doing Tie rod sleeves and spare tie rods in my toolkit. I don't do a lot of rock crawling in my neck of the woods. Will be looking into the 74 weld housing in the future.

    Just got delivery on our 2023 big bend in velocity blue with dual tops. Non Sasquatch. Were getting ~28 mpg. We got it as a beach cruiser. So no off-roading it for us. Love all the videos. Keep up the great work.

  • @f100
    @f100 Před 9 měsíci

    Good job on the explanation. Add to your point. Many people get bigger tires without considering upgrading the steering system. Hence increasing the load on a tie road that was made for 35" tires.

    • @OFFTHEGRIND
      @OFFTHEGRIND  Před 9 měsíci

      Yes absolutely! That’s where the bulk of breakages occur from what I understand, but also in an off road, high load environment

    Your video was just fine. You probably already know that focus is due to low lighting and close ups. Haha, anywsy, I got the Broncbuster tierod sleeves and the steering rack, bilit cap. I think it is equally as strong as 74Weld. I even go to the same town they are out of all the time. But... anyway, great tutorial and your advice was dead-on. Keep up the good work. I would love to go out there with you one day.

    I don’t know that I have seen a practical gas mileage video. Can you do a review of what mileage your bronco gets with the mods/fuel storage and terrain traveled? I think it would help educate anyone looking to have their own adventure based off places you have been.

  • @Dave-oe3kj
    @Dave-oe3kj Před 9 měsíci

    David, loved the video. Big fan of 74 Weld as they’re right down the road from me and their engineering looks tops!
    Question: for most applications, will the steering rack cap and tie rod upgrade you did be sufficient vs doing the entire steering rack upgrade offered by 74 Weld?

    • @OFFTHEGRIND
      @OFFTHEGRIND  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks! Yeah those guys are awesome and really know what they’re doing!! I think the full steering rack is for more extreme application. So running massive tires and doing aggressive rock crawling. The end cap and tie rods should be plenty for most everything

  • @leenash8106
    @leenash8106 Před 7 měsíci

    The 74 Weld site refers to the end cap (stage 1) as being something good for "light off-roading". I overland and wheel a few times a year- don't do anything too crazy, but do like rock crawling, etc (something like a level 3 at an off road park). Do you think this setup is adequate for that? Or, should I look into their Stage 3, Stage 4 offerings? I intend to eventually go to 37's.

  • @christopherenoch4230

    I personally would love to hear an honest opinion of the extreme duty steering rack that comes on the Raptor/ Wildtraks. I see people upgrading them, but they're only upgrading them because somebody is trying to sell a product. For instance, Kevin/Britney with LiteBrite, their Raptor, I think Weld74 sent them the upgraded cap that you put on.
    I see the normal tie rods/ steering racks breaking, but I have yet to see one of the extreme duties breaking, under normal off-road conditions, not conditions where broncbuster is trying his hardest to actually break them, I'm personally am not going to try to break something on purpose.
    Obviously the standard tie rods and steering rack need to be upgraded because they do break under normal off-road use.
    Perhaps I'm counting my lucky stars that I haven't broken anything yet, but my steering is all stock for a while.
    Heck I think Ford is adding the extreme duty steering components to the '24 Badlands?

    • @OFFTHEGRIND
      @OFFTHEGRIND  Před 9 měsíci

      To be honest I’m not well educated in the 3.0 rack so I couldn’t tell you. I know they are certainly beefed up, but I don’t know at what point they would fail. The 74 weld guys are SUPER knowledgeable so you could try and get ahold of them and see what they say for your application

  • @popo_patty
    @popo_patty Před 6 měsíci

    Did you install the outer boot clamps on those tie rod boots? I didn’t see it get shown or talked about and was curious if they came with them or if you reuse the OEM ones

    • @OFFTHEGRIND
      @OFFTHEGRIND  Před 6 měsíci

      I did install the inner clamp. Those were still attached and sealed. There was not a clamp on the outer tie rod nor was there a ledge to even place one. It’s a really dumb design

    • @popo_patty
      @popo_patty Před 6 měsíci

      @@OFFTHEGRIND that’s weird. I’ve worked around a bunch of the steering stuff on the Bronco over the last two years. Never seen an icon boot without an outer clamp. It is a small ledge though. Maybe it’s inverted and just has to be pulled back out? Just a thought. Or you got a wrong boot but I can’t see any tie rod boot not having a clamp on the outer end.

    • @OFFTHEGRIND
      @OFFTHEGRIND  Před 6 měsíci

      @popo_patty we looked at the actually thinking maybe it had inverted but it did not. Im thinking the sent me the wrong boots maybe? I don’t know why any boots wouldn’t have that though

    • @OFFTHEGRIND

    Why anyone buys 74 weld Bronco steering products absolutely boggles my mind. They just took what Broncbuster did years ago and copied the idea. I've never seen less brand loyalty in my life then I do in the Bronco community.
