STRANDED In a SNOW STORM… (Bronco Mod Failed Me)

- I met up with Will from @Venture2Roam and Rob from @RevereOverland to do some Winter camping and snow wheeling in a snowstorm in Southern Idaho. The trip did not go as planned however. My steering rack froze over on the trail, which forced us to diagnose on the trail and get creative with a solution.

Here is an update video on the steering rack:

The most gangster thing that I seen was when you let another guy back your rig instead of acting macho and risking your life over something that isn't that important safety and knowing your limits well done man well done
Beautiful video. Great cinematography and story telling. However, your Bronco didn’t fail you. The Icon tie rods come with outer clamps, and their instructions tell you to install them. Of course your boots have to have clamps on BOTH ends. If someone else installed these for you, then they failed. I hope you get it fixed up the right way.
Happy to see this is an aftermarket part issue and not something I need to worry about with my stock boot and tie rods
Yes absolutely! There was a Bronco out with us with no mods to the steering rack and he had no issue
It wasn't quite clear to a casual youtube watcher. Good to know.@@OFFTHEGRIND
@@kevinstarski1598 yeah, I cut specific detail in the name of video pacing. Probably should have added a voice over explanation or something. I was hoping what I included would be enough but was afraid it was going to be too vague
I have the icon tie rods and they're both ziptied on one end and clamped on the other... No problems. (yet)
But ya made me check for a possible issue so that's good. Thanks
To quote Dirty Harry; "a man's got to know his limitations." I respect you for having the good judgment to not try something too dangerous, and for being willing to admit your concern and let someone else with more experience take the wheel. Good on ya, David! Great vid!!
Thanks dale I really appreciate that. I want to be real with you all and not hide what actually happened on trips. There’s few situations off road that make me uncomfortable, but this is too of the list. I HATE snowy shelf roads
As someone who just bought a tundra, cool to see another tundra out there getting dirty! Awesome video as always!
Outstanding and inspiring video. Enjoyed it very much. Thank you for producing it.
Good to see friends enjoying one another’s company in beautiful country.
Very inspirational. I can't wait to do it myself.
heres my tip,, they make this deicer spray that melts ice, i highly recommend bringing a few cans of it, it will work on those latches, locks and any other parts that are frozen, probably better then adding super hot heat to parts.
dont buy ford
Crazy and interesting problem in the cold - thanks for sharing.
What a fantastic video! Winter camping looks to be a real adventure especially with us being in Florida. Bummer about your Bronco. Hope you get it all worked out. Safe travels!
Always good to have great buddies to help you get out of a jam. It also looks like those new Nitto’s you’re running churned through the snow, no problem!! Great video!
your cinematography is KILLER! loved the vid. thanks.
Great video David, the issue you had with the steering sucks but the story was compelling to watch how you dealt with it. The editing and drone shots were amazing, loved it!
Great video. I’m sure you will fix the issue with the Bronco. Thanks for taking us along. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Amazing video as always. Cinematography and storytelling is spot on.
what an epic adventure! thank you for sharing
Looks like a super fun trip! Colorado closes most of the trails down once the snow falls. I wish I could do more of this kind of thing.
Dude it was awesome. And not awesome at the same time lol. But same here in Washington. Not all trails, but a good amount of
good collab. you guys should do more of these!
Because of this video and Rob's I literally bought bourbon barrel Kentucky ale last night. Got me hammered! When you guys are back up in WA I can't wait to wheel with y'all.
lol pretty damn good right!? Yeah man we should get a trip on the books
If you ever come across it, try a good red wine aged in the bourbon barrels. So good. And of course a killer steak to accompany it. 👍
Awesome trip! Great info on the steering rack for the Bronco!!! 👌😉😎🌵
Keep adventuring, keep storytelling. The adventure begins when the unexpected happens. When you hit east coast let us know 👍
Great content, excellent video!!! Love seeing cross overs from favorite CZcams channels. Keep it up guys! Hitting 100k is just “ice”ing on the cake 😁🤣
Congrats on going over 25,000 subscribers 👏
Can't wait to see this!
always keep that GMRS radio with HAM capabilities for emergencies..."Never wheel alone, always wheel with friends"~NyNomad
Awesome video as usual !!
Man you do a great job with your videos, from the sound to the cinematography, all top notch!
Another amazing Vlog. Nicely done man!
Cannot believe the cinematography of these videos. Amazing
Winter camping is what I love for. Great video! Head up my way to BC; I’d take you snow wheeling in the track Jeep! 🎉🎉
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! Merry Christmas 🎄 Can't Wait!
I hope Santa brings me a new steering rack lol! Merry Christmas
Fricken Beautiful! In the summer Yellow Pine, just north of you a ways, has a harmonica festival. was thinking of going but "Long Drive" for me. Still might someday. Thanks for the vid!
Wow! Really like the look of it and hope you swing by with it someday!
Great adventure! It’s gotten be a blast wheeling with Rob and Will.
Meh… it was alright
Just kidding, those guys are the real deal. It was a ton of fun!
Love small towns! They have the best people
This. THIS earned a subscribe. Absolutely loved this
Keep up the terrific work!
Thank you so much!
Can you make a video where you talk about all your camping gear? That coffee press your storage things you bring etc?! Fire starter, like you have so many goodies
I actually really want to make this video and was thinking about it for a while. I want to see what I actually use through the course of a trip and what I can leave at home
Excellent! I can’t wait!
Watching this for the second time - what a great video! 👊🏼😃🙌🏼👏🏼
Great work dude! It makes me love my brand new Bronco more and more! 🔥🔥🤟
Love this! I grew up in Idaho all my life & it’s awesome to see what it has to offer outside of the reg.
I would love to tag along for one of these snow wheeling trips with y’all! Just tell me when and where & I’ll pull my own weight 👌🏾
With all the information available with our finger tips, it still amazes me people even think of using ICON products. It does not matter the vehicle or application, they start leaking as soon as the install is complete.
They were recommended by 74 weld so that is why I went with them. But yeah, I agree with you. I will never have another one of their products on my vehicle
That Bourbon Barrel Kentucky Ale is tasty stuff!
Great video it looks so awesome out there.
It is such a beautiful area!
The alternator is actually pretty low too so any large puddles will leave you sol
Suggestion: install traction devices on front and rear. If you have no traction at the front, you have no steering control.
We only had one set. So we chose to put them on the end that was pointing down the hill
Great cinematography. Beautiful!
So these were the Icon tie rods that kept freezing? That's unfortunate. I guess not every aftermarket part is an upgrade. 🤷
@@TheWinterValkyrie nothing against Icon, I have their UCAs, but I watched the video and it's definitely their fault for shipping the wrong boots with them.
awesome vid bro. your vid skills and storytelling keep getting better and better with every vid. very impressive
I ride this all this on my adventure bike. Fun country. Backcountry roads for days. Welcome to Idaho. 👌
Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is 10/10, awesome video!
Stunning
This is going to be good!
Great to watch and enjoyed your drone footage. Why don’t you invest in winter tires as they would likely have you safely through this with no issue. Up in BC, winter tires are almost a given as they provide traction where all terrains just can’t match a dedicated winter tire compound.
Nice Video, familar with many of these spots. My Bronco failed me too but in the Owhyees, fuel pump and module.
Oh man that really sucks. The owyhees is super freakin remote too. Was it cause by bad fuel?
@@OFFTHEGRINDnope, used top tier 91octane. Bad fuel pump and module, replaced with same part numbers and felt it going again so sold the Bronco. There's an update part number now as I am not the only one that experienced this.
Great vid as always!
Thank you man! Thanks for hanging out in the premiere
Try spraying moisture inhibitor, the one use on computers. Thats on your tie rod .
I was very surprised to see you guys try an take the bypass from middle fork to 327. Not only is that a steep shelf road 😨 you would of been back tracking to get back onto the road you where originally on.
Phenomenal video!!
Thanks!
hey pass the Popcorn! BTW ....25K! Congrats David!
LOL Thanks!
WOW.....A very serious unusual problem to deal with, kind of crazy
Yeah it was a little wild. Glad we got it out though
Great video
Чувак, ты путешествуешь на на той машине, купи вечную Toyota или Nissan patrol y60-61.
JEEEZUS! You took a Bronco off road??? Brave...
😅👍👋
"Eagle Rare", excellent selection from my home state's bourbons. I just popped a cap of Eagle Rare this morning. 😀
The fact that you opened a bottle of whiskey in the morning means we’re friends lol
I kind of wish you had attempted the washout, just so all the melodrama would have been warranted.
Santa definitely brought you coal
Go drive it yourself 43.78512, -115.52541
Kentucky bourbon barrel on draft is even better. The bourbon really pops. It gets lost in the bottle a little. Luckily, it's easy to get here in southern Ohio.
Amazing video 🍺🍺🍺
Hey there, enjoyed the vid, burrrr, have to think about go out when it's that cold. On the steering issue. Did water actually get into the rack through the boot or was it something else that caused the freeze up? Thx.
Probably my favorite video yet… Minus the damn bronco fiasco!!
Thanks! Yeah, that wasn’t great lol
Great video…. Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏾🤙🏾
What ended up being the end result with the steering? Any damage to the rack?
I have seen this many time on logging roads up in WA, where guys with off road rigs get into trouble in the anow and ice because they do not carry chains. Glad you all made it out , but on steep terrain in the winter, chains are a must have
I agree. I was going to buy some for this trip but we were not supposed to be on roads like this. This road had degraded significantly since will last drove it
I live in NC and Blanton's is a very popular whiskey here great choice 👍👍
Great video, always beautiful scenery. Which Nittos performed the best on the snow?
Honestly they were pretty evenly matched I would say. I did learn that snow staying on the tread is actually better for snow traction. Before I thought it was like Mudding where you wanted it to eject. So technically the recons should perform better. But in the real world I didn’t see a difference really
If the "paw prints" have visible toenails at a walking pace it's a dog if you can't see toenails at a walking pace it's a cat although a cats track can start showing toenails when the animal is moving at any speed besides walking
Just curious if you used your Vevor Diesel Heater and how has it been working for you?
Great video. I’m having trouble deciding to keep my Colorado or getting a solid axle truck for this reason. It’s a tough one.
This issue is not a normal one. This happened solely because of a poor design of an aftermarket part and me not questioning it like I should have. For what that’s worth. There were two other IFS trucks out there and neither had an issue because the boots were properly seeped
Offroading joyride in every frame.
Having Duratracks tires and airing down to 8-10 psi would help
Trapping some hot embers under there for a Good bit should do the trick
How do you get the drone shots if it seems like yall are solo driving 😂
I would have camped near those hot springs !
We were kinda close lol. There’s hot springs EVERYWHERE in that area
Great video man.
I’m in Wa state. I’ll ride with you some day…
That is a real issue, would like to hear a follow up from Icon about this
I plan on making a video about this issue when I get an answer from them and find a resolution
So, I'm about to put on the Icon Tie Rods and 74 Weld End Cap you suggested- what do I need to do in order to not have this issue? (I live in Texas, very small chance I ever wheel in snow).
Just make sure you have clamps on both ends. The tie rods are great, but pay attention to the boots. I’m not sure if they sent me defective boots or the wrong boots. I questioned them when received but I should have questioned a little harder. Just make sure they’re sealed and you’ll be fine
@@BrooklynNY1979 had to go there?
I don’t think it’s the boots stopping the steering rack. He cleaned them up and still seized. My opinion is the the aluminum steering housing shrank and squeezed on the piston inside. Maybe the tolerance is too tight.
Thats what she said!
Hey bro is that the ikamper bag and blanket you liked? Couldn’t tell from the video. Been thinking about getting it myself.
Hey yeah it is! Honestly dude they are amazing and super comfy. I love them. I have a link and code in the description that’ll save you some money too
Yall should have deicer with u in winter
Any one playing in the snow should.have tire chains. Those spots you called sketchy is everyday occurrence in our neck of the woods. Beautiful country.
I've driven up there with a 97 Cavalier with front wheel drive😆
Why no chains?
Let’s go.😎
Nice video. Idaho is on my list. Wondering how my G-Wagon on 33" would do there.
In this area it would do just fine!
@@OFFTHEGRIND Well then, up on the 2024 trail list.
Another great video. What kind of shovel and axe do you have?
Thank you! Neither are special lol. The axe is just some axe from Lowe’s and the shovel is an Amazon find that I honestly wouldn’t recommend
Where were you day one? Did I miss it? It looked like the river along hwy2 on the way to Leavenworth in Washington.
You did indeed. We were in Idaho at the arrow rock dam. Then a small town called twin springs
This is exactly why I won't modify my bronco other than a winch and roof rack. Asking for problems you didn't have before.
Low temps on the trail....but nothing froze on the Jeeps? 🤔 Go Bronco!! 🥶🥶🤣
It was due to faulty after market boots which allowed snow to get packed in the boot and then in to the rack. We had a stock bronco out there too with no issues
Should’ve stuck with your Tacoma bro!
Any reason to not use chains when you get on the trails?
Proper chains are much too heavy for OffTheGrind. He would have to hit the gym and get carnivore to handle a set of chains. 😂😂😂😂
@AngerManagementOverland I lifted your mom just fine. I think I can handle some chains
I noticed you do not have mud flaps. Is there a reason?
What time of year specifically? Its nice to see some in the off season, as my work doesn't allow me time off in the summer and this is my dream. Coming from Alaska it takes awhile.
This was early December. It was so awesome out there! Highly recommended
