Long term player here, who's remained optimistic throughout all of this.
While it has been a bit disheartening going so long without significant new content, I understand why these changes were needed. I think it was necessary to improve the new player experience. A game that can't keep new players will inevitably die.
If you look at what Rare INTENDED, it's actually very reasonable. If 2022 had gone according to schedule, we'd currently be sitting about a year after these foundational changes were done.
What has me really excited is this: Rare originally would have wanted big new features for their 5 year anniversary, but due to delays, just had a QoL season. Consider that, if Guilds had hit in the last quarter of 2022, the first quarter of 2023 would have been the voyage changes we're currently seeing. Meaning, the NEXT update after would be what they had originally intended to be the 5 year anniversary update. Something meant to really wow the community. I'm excited to see what they come up with.
Not only that, but they mentioned being able to add more limited time voyages for example, to make the game worth coming back to!

As a veteran player I think this is a great update. More contested world events, voyages are FINALLY rebalanced (oh god old athena voyages REALLY needed that) and that does mean more loot to gain and/or steal and now we got more progression to do for the compains. honestly couldn't ask for better
Only 1 ship will be able to dive to an active world event lol. They ruined something that had so much potential.
how so? now if you see a world event on your server you've got a pretty good shot at seeing someone there and can go contest it. All the '1-diver' system does is prevent someone from spawning right on you trying to do the event. You still need to keep watch for other players, but you'll see them coming, not get essentially hourglass invaded @@SkillIssue999

@@SkillIssue999 Sure, but you can still sail towards it the old fashion way, and contest/hide ans steal the event. And i'm gonna say, i'm glad they did this, so I (i'm saying that for me specifically) can clear Skeleton/Phantoms fleets quicker, so better events can spawn (usually i'm the only one on my server doing those events since they are pretty repetitive and don't give much)

What foundation? Season 10 made thieves optional season 11 is making seas optional, the games just “of” now. They are building an instant gratification game in a game that’s built around sailing a vast world. Imagine if something like the Witcher 3 had a 20 minute campaign.
@@brennancondon3357 as someone who played this game when arena came out, and still does, I hope that this wipp bring more players with these recent updates. More new players spending money = bigger/better stuff to come. They have personally said that they always try to keep the Heart of the Game alive, through all tha changes this game has gone through.

The main issue I have seen with the community is as soon as anyone mentions they don't absolutly LOVE the pvp aspect of the game they immediately get dogpiled by 20 other players who do nothing but pvp and get told they're "weak" and to just go play a different game. There is an over abundance of toxic pvp sweats who are trying to gate keep the game from anyone new who isn't interested in spending every waking moment fighting other players because of they seem to think that that is all there is to the game and it's wrong to enjoy the pve aspects of the game. It's a shame that they have been allowed to become ingrained in the community as deeply as they have because they are hurting the games chances by purposely driving away new players.
Couldn't agree more. I'm glad they added safer seas because it's something I've wanted from the beginning. Problem is my crew hasn't had the chance to try it out yet because there hasn't been anything new to make us want to actually play. we didn't have any goals, the only thing awaiting us were the same voyages and world events we've done a hundered times.
but yeah, nothing ruins a fun sailing session like a pvp assclown chasing you across the map. I'm hopeful that this update makes even sailing on the regular sea of thieves much more tolerable.
Safer seas. I’m sorry if you want to have your cake and eat it too, but if you want to progress your levels you’ll have to defend your loot from human pirates.

I think there is a place for PvP and PvE in Sea Of Thieves. It's a shame that there's a toxic culture around "forcing" a particular playstyle.
Jon you should make a comparing and explaining every change between S6 and S11. Seeing as S11 is confirmed to be the last "foundational" update. It'd be interesting to really look at how much the game has changed.
All is good but it’s crazy how they are building frame work 6 years into the game
I think that's due to the pivot I mentioned in the video, a "reimagining" of what Sea of Thieves was going to be as a game moving forward.
The only thing I want from this update is the following:
1. More slim swords (Athena versions)
2. New ship crest (Athena Ghost)
3. New Pirate legend tattoos (DA is underwhelming)
Having played since the betas with over 250 days played. I could say that season 11 will help for us experience. Players that have been here forever but it's a band-aid. I give it a year max before all of us are done prestiging every one of our factions in our back to nothing to do again
That's if there's no other content developed in that year but (hopefully) we've got at least two more seasons this year. :D

i hate the new quick travel feture, i think its good to have the people sailing to their destination, just imagine going to an event because its really close and you dont need to use the quick travel and a ship just spawns right in front of your eyes and now its your problem, i just hate the idea
You can't dive to contested world events and you can only dive in to the start of voyages. You still have to sail the rest of the way and you lose loot if you dive with it on your ship.
Also, diving has a cooldown.

Been playing since 2019 and so I'll call myself a veteran and say the only thing I want is for the cosmetics that are locked, stay locked, including the ones I missed during my stints away from playing and the ones I never got that I regret.
A part of the fun for me is just seeing what other people have and going "damn if only I had just done the thing!" or "Oh yeah I missed that season because Baldur's Gate 3 took over my life."
So essentially, people will be able to fast travel and easily get the drop on you while doing a world event with no way of knowing or any warning. Very interesting.
I was in the top 5 percent for hours played last year, according to the xbox recap. I will probably be cutting back for this upcoming season. But I will play and be optimistic for future updates.

Another thing I've noticed:
Sea of Thieves has pvp and pve mixed in, but I have this feeling that Rare saw the toxicity in Arena and Hourglass and decided that maybe it's best to not make the game an esport for the time being.
Toxicity aside, they just can't support it properly right now, what with the server issues, cheating, and the ease of ban evading.
The competitive players will have to wait for a while.
I started playing this game during the pandemic and took a break now I'm back and i love this game even more
As a new solo player, I saw the gold penalty for safer seas and disregarded it. I heavily regret my desision as I definitely went through a great number of toxic crews for little reward... I am glad I kept playing though. Because the game can be fun when Im not getting called a slur by the guy cannoning onto my boat I guess.

Ive played since day one, and i will continue to play, every season is welcome, yes some end up a bit stale, but if the frequency is consistent, then bring on any changes, variety and trying new things is good!
This video is 10 of 10! I 100% agree with everything you said! I see this S11 update as Rare’s commitment to the game!
It also makes so much sense to way too many players that it feels like they are preparing for a mass influx of new players. Why? What is coming that they think so many new players will be playing? And after I heard the leaks about possible Playstation release… I… I need that to be true! If SoT comes to Playstation it not only will bring so much more players for the already existing community, but also more Insiders to help Rare. Also more money for Rare to spend on the game is actually a huge one! Especially if Microsoft can see how SoT brings in money, the more resources they are willing to put into SoT to keep it making money.
I don’t want to seem like the money-makes-the-world-go-round type of guy. But I hope for SoT to be financially profitable because of what comes back to us, the players.
Rare have proven that they can blow our socks off multiple times, and I am excited to see them continue to do it again!

Sea of thieves is at its core, a PVP experience. When the game first launched PVP was pretty much all we had to keep us entertained, and player provided content was epic. Slowly, those emergent gameplay elements have been stripped away, first by arena, and now hourglass trying to compartmentalize pvp away from the lackluster pve elements, and now they want to add fast travel to further cheapen the experience for those of us who just want to get supplies and hit the waves looking for our own content.
sadly, i think this season may be the last for the game. Any further changes to make the game "easier" will just make it more boring than it already is.

One thing I’m looking forward to is the excuse to do regular voyages again since they have some new loot types as well as the increase rep cap, which should be a decent breath of fresh air since all I’ve been playing is Hourglass since it released (only thing to do that’s kept me engaged/ enjoying the game), mainly because I usually get the feeling I could be doing something more productive on the seas/wasting less time👍

i really want to see them come out with more ship classes even the slope feels like it should have been an 3 man ship. and it would be nice to have something like an row boat with an sail for soloing. there so much potential for the game looking forward to season 11
The problem with smaller ships is that even the sloop experiences a lot of violent rocking on full billow as it is. A smaller ship would be buggy or even unplayable. I can see where you come from, but captaining one of those things would not only be practically pointless due to lack of proper space, and more limited customization, plus the aforementioned rocking issue. Adding more variations of sloops might be a viable thing though, in fact, I think ship classes could be a thing. Like, a class with a thicker hull making it harder to damage, but also making the ship move slower.
God, a rowboat with a sail would be hell in the storm. The rowboat by itself already is lol.

I know if I did and voyages, sell anything to the reapers hideout and trying to get the pve/pvp curses I’d probably have at least 3 ppl join me on a galleon for some support when doing them abit
Reapers sells are always a struggle solo, for sure.

Thanks for the great encapsulation of the history of SoT, and for the positive message on the future outlook of the game. As a salty Sea Dog myself, I find the current state of PVP to be pretty abysmal, and to me the season 11 updates just feel like even more ways for players to avoid interaction with other crews, depriving me further of the only part of the game I still enjoy.
My biggest concerns for the future though are related to longstanding issues with foundational gameplay mechanics. Hit reg has admittedly gotten better but I wouldn't call it fixed still, and rubberbanding has in general actually gotten worse for me over the last few seasons. Fighting other players under these conditions is extremely frustrating, and I think leads many players to avoid PVP and lean into the PVE content. Instead of this encouraging the devs to fix these core gameplay issues, it seems to have instead encouraged them to just cater to generating more PVE content.
Monkey Island was highly underrated. I actually quit when they removed Arenas, and Monkey Island is what brought me back. :-)
My brother and I are y1 and have both taken many long breaks but we always have and always will come back to the SoT!

Also yes!! the Monkey Island tall tales where some of my absolute favorite content the game has ever put out!! I've never played a single monkey island game and i knew nothing about them before playing the tall tales and I honestly might go back and play monkey island because of it. Those tall tales were SO well done and thought out, my friend and I had a blast solving the puzzles and figring things out. And the story was so fun it was the perfect addition to the game and a match made in heaven.
Need more Guybrush in our lives!

I love RARE games each one is so unique but with that comes the pressure of getting people to try them and keeping them fresh all the time

Skull of Siren Sheesh, in my opinion kinda sucks. You ask why? People see where you need to deliver it. We got an alliance of 2 brigantinas to cam the island with Briggse, not to mention their racial slur out of nowhere. We sank them down with a sloop what was funny, but it was hard to deliver a skull with 6 guys working against us. We had succeeded but still sunk a few seconds later as I was ganked by 3 players right at our ship. My friend just took advantage of the commotion and brought it home.

Me my wife and our 2 friends have been playing gta online pretty much straight for that last 6 years. And ever since sea of thieves came out on the ps5 that has been all we have been playing. We did start out on safer seas then tried high sea once at first and immediately we were sunk and lost a ton of loot. My wife and friends swore they wouldn’t play higher seas. But the past week have tried it again and enjoying it. We are mostly cooperative mode type players and stay away from pvp.

I've been thinking about this as well. As a veteran player, I like the fact that they are changing the voyages. They aren't good the way they were, and I love how they have been using cosmetics as a reward to do that type of content, along with the CoF and Reapers chests.
Let's be real, anyone who has ever wanted to play Sea of Thieves (PC and Xbox) probably already has. With the addition of safer seas, scaled down world events, and even now, with this update tells me they are getting ready for a lot of new players. The PS5 rumor makes a lot of sense to me now.
I'm not necessarily worried about content for veteran players. I'll do the voyages now they they are different. If they do open this to another platform, it could spark some life which ultimately would be good for the game and us players as well.
I'm all for more players, however we get them lol!

@@mel__live it will give more valuable loot, much more than now, all of those random small voyages now have specific loot, which are worth more
part of the new loot stuff (VERY minor spoily from the Deep Dive released earlier today) is what they called internally as 'S' tier loot that'll be on the 'emergent events' so at least shipwrecks, possibly megs and skelly ships that ambush you that's better than voyage loot. I believe it's the stuff that's got a more crystal like look to it, or marble...one or the other, but they look FANCY AF.@@mel__live

Overall this update looks fun however I am conflicted about the diving mechanic. I’d say there could definitely be some positives with it but also potentially some negatives. In safer seas I think it undoubtedly is a good addition but I’m not 100% sure how to feel about it for high seas, just have to see how it goes when the update comes out
I think the fact that it really only helps at the start of a Voyage and only basically when your ship is empty is a fair compromise
After having played I’m perfectly happy with the addition and think it is overall a very good one
I usually prefer being pessimistic... but I'm excited to prestige ❤ I joined in August 2022 and had everything maxed by November... then it took 7 months of grinding to 100 both pvp factions 😅 I really hope they revisit them, add some dofferent colours to the curses between 200 and 1000. A red ghost curse, a ruby skeleton... etc etc would be perfect ❤ I cant wait for Update day
Played since the alpha, SoT is absolutely without a doubt the best game created in the last 10 years.
I think Sea Of Thieves is one of the best examples of how a game developer can, over the course of time, revolutionize their own game given enough support.
I hope they do add PlayStation in that would dramatically increase our player base and they wouldn't have the same problem that Xbox did on release. So many people in the beginning didn't know what they were doing. Couldn't find anything explaining it and quit the game before they ever played it. That's why in the beginning the statistics said that less than 50% of people had eaten a banana or sailed a ship

yeah i can see what rare will doing with season 11 , mostly the quest/mission/world event time consume and yeah if you dont have much time , you can take a little quest and so on. here is my problem with that i feel a real china grind for mostly everything and not i can experience for a new adventure , when i join on the seas ( best example the new cosmetic for the trading companys , which pirate wants to grind 500 lvl to have 5 rings on the hand :O )
yeah maybe i to old for this or for me i dont have much fun anymore without my old crew or new people. it can be that , maybe i will look in the season 11 and make my decision then

Honestly, the gold penalty in Safer Seas is eh, but whatever... the shitty part is the amount of cut actualy content tgat doesnt rely on direct player interaction (captaincy, Guilds, etc)
I started playing sea of theavs in 2018 or 2019 and dont under stand why they make the game easier every time they make a season like before you had to put the treasure on the ship one bye one so you had to defend your self hvile the entier server is trying to steal your treasure now you can harpone all the treasure and sail away before 1 ship can even try to fight you before you left the Island you May tink that the harpon got added a long time ago but stil sea of theavs has just goten easier since 2018

I play this game since the launch. I've missed some updates wich i now understand it was a mistake. But they are restructuring Sea of Thives in good ways for a reason that i can not say for sure except for the obvious: Big Updates, specially since the approach for Adventures will be changed and Flameheart will finally sail with us.
I really hope they figure out a way to bring back adventures for everyone to replay.

Don't understand ppl hating so much on the update, the new voyages, menus and distinctions look awesome, the voyages really needed a rework
they need to add +1 player to all ships and make it more operable..
You can operate every ship as a solo player if you wanted to, what do you mean?🤔
agreed. And i think they need something smaller than a sloop for single players. and something larger than a galleon for larger friend groups. Something like a Bermuda rigged fishing boat for single handers. different sailing characteristics, enabling it to sail faster when close-hauled (pointing almost into the wind) to escape enemy attacks. and something like a frigate, or a 3rd rate ship of the line for larger friend groups. 2 decks of guns and 6-8 players. of course it would be slow and hard to control, requiring actual teamwork and communication to sail effectively.
I dive to a skelly fleet and a brig of sweats is on me immediately. But why do I care? I have nothing to lose. I deny them a fight and scuttle my ship. I cancel my quest, ew supply my ship on the islandnit spawned at and dive immediately to another emergent event.
It's kinda cheap.

The reception of Monkey Island was heartbreaking. We'll keep playing, took me 4 years to gather friends, and we've become a weekly Galleon Crew in 2023. Guilds stopped us playing, because we couldn't decide on the name. These UI changes are neeeded and I wait patently for "Pirate cosmetic presets" to arrive. Small things like title chest are just a mess. I still value a stable game & server over new content. SoT's getting big, too. Breaking the 100GB barrier feels huge with a tiny SSD
Game definitely needs some optimization time. But yeah, poor Monkey Island. Hope the greater community at large enjoys it!
Hey John, it’s a bit off topic, but if you are looking for another game to try, I recommend No Man’s Sky. Idk why but SOT and NMS feel like they are very similar games, even if they aren’t
I have dabbled in NMS in the past, but not in the past year or two. One day I'll get my Sea Of Thieves in space fix. :D
I really hope this is a 2 years of fondation improvment and after that ... according to the tweet, new content. I think, if Rare continue for 1 or 2 seasons of improvement and no new content, people gona leave the game because of the long wait. I want to find the old fool with more good vibes and less toxicity and the balance with PvE and PvP, not a 20/80
Yup yup! I agree, the long haul! We started playing at the beginning of season ten but I reckon Rare has a better insight on our future. We arrived from Ark survival evolved and we got brutalized by cheats and the aspect of pvp when you sleep. Wildcard released Ark survival ascended and we’re not interested; instead turning our focus to the new to us: Sea of thieves. We have a blast even when we sink. I only miss Ark for the Dino’s we raised but not the people. That was so toxic and we couldn’t even tell until we found Sea of thieves. I’m grateful for Rare to put and show so much effort. 😢🎉❤😮

I love this game and have mainly seen positive things added... Most of the stuff I'm seeing looks good but if I was to change anything it would be in hour glass. The balance is broken I'm getting matched with people 2000 levels above me and for the life of me I don't understand it. And don't even start me on the cheating in this game right now... That needs to be the main focus right now.
I’m suspecting a PS5 release. As an Xbox player, I’d love for more to have an opportunity to experience this wonderful game. It has seriously carried some of my long distance friendships 😅

I really hope this update saves the game. It’s actually so buggy right now that I stopped playing…. Again. I’ll get back on for sure when this update hits the waves (pun intended)
What sort of bugs were you encountering that made you stop playing?
@@JonBardcore when captaining my own ship, the banner that asks me to visit the Shipwright (the ship customization woman) pops up on screen and stays there for the entire play session. Visiting the shop, customizing my ship, buying a new accessory and adding it to my ship… none of it will make the banner go away. I uninstalled and reinstalled and still it persists. Hopefully season 11 will fix this.
First things first this is the first video of yours I've ever watched. You did a phenomenal job explaining for noobies.
In my mind sot is a dead game combined me and my crewmates have over 600 days logged this update seems promising for us. Makes those last combinations easier, might give us more of an opportunity for pvp without playing underwater simulator.

Damn... I started when the game was going down and it keep going that way, I had a good time but the ugly part was when in only 1 year we got... 2 eternal seasons, and then Monkey Island, which wasn't like something big (on the sandbox itself), and it was kinda bad, tale 1 was really good, tale 2 was THE WORST and tale 3 it was beautiful at the start, bad inside the caves and awful at the end. Also lets remember how trinkets were the worst addition to the game, seriously, adventure rewards, tall tale rewards, LETS HOPE NO TWITCH DROP TRINKETS.
I still kinda like this game, and I really love this update, because of the option to go faster from the get go, the hardest part of SoT for me, is just sail, it takes a really long time, so W Rare for this and I hope they keep going

How did a single video about a click-baity "hidden message" in Season 11 turn into a history report going over every single iteration of the game? I hate when CZcamsrs, desperate for longer video content, go alllllll the way back to the beginning and describe something we all know about for 9 minutes before they finally get to their point.
Snark aside, I'll actually give you a real answer to this so that you and others can read. TLDR: I can't assume the viewer has the same knowledge I have when I'm making the content.
If I'm working on a video, I have to decide who that video is for. What demographic am I targeting? In this case, I'm targeting current players of Sea Of Thieves that are curious about Season 11.
Now, here's the catch. Some of those players don't know the backstory of what they're playing. If we were to compare statistics of new players versus, let's say 1K hour players, new players would be on top. This video doesn't ostracize those new players by only giving passing references to things that have already happened. Instead, it provides enough context that they understand and are appreciative. You can see this in other comments on this same video.
Now, for many experienced players, I am absolutely targeting a nostalgia factor. It's in my favor to do so. Everyone who has played the game for an extended period of time has favorite memories. They are also intrigued by the idea of a hidden message, but they will also watch to see if their favorite moments are referenced.
