Today I learned the break between main campaigns isn't in fact so Matt can write the campaign - it's so Laura can build her new character. And I'm here for it
Given how vocally talented she is I would be so down for Laura playing a bard in Campaign 4! If you're in need of any good bard related content then I recommend the video 'Bards: The Most Misunderstood Class' by Jess of the Shire.
Honestly I'd be down for literally any of them to play a bard, especially Liam since he ended up being sick during the 1 shot where he was going to play a bard for Red Nose Day. Sam's made all of them come out of their shell with singing and Laura especially since doing the Daughter of the Sea for WoW, it would be so sick. But a school of tragedy Liam bard????? I need it
Shut up
@@psycofire93 Laura also VA'd the main character Grace in the cyoa musical stray gods and it was pretty incredible.
I want them to do a one-shot as a troupe of bards.
I like that Liam decided Sam's character class and ancestry again. Continuing the tradition to Daggerheart!
I hope Sam shows up tonight with some tiny props to reflect his size this time. 🙂
And he picked Giant this time instead of something tiny. 😂
Hell probably never read any Daggerheart rules or source material either so another tradition continued.
Shut up
i like how Liam is basically Sun Wukong/Son Goku.
Ashley hitting herself in the face with her pencil and just going, “Why did that just happen?” I felt that to my core.
When did this happen I feel like I missed it. That's what I get for multitasking ...
@@BlankJebus 10:35.
I am here from many years in the past. Vox Machina C01E87 to ask, does Marisha (I love you forever Mish, I'm taking the piss) EVER shake the 'where am I?' vibe on her TURNS!!? ❤❤❤❤ I need to shake this rage addiction I have for it!!! I swear there is no judgement. I'm so conflicted!!!
Matt: you can be as big or small as you want
Ashley: frog
Rogue as party girl sneaking out of her bedroom and breaking into the liquor cabinet is FANTASTIC
that is the best thing i’ve ever heard im making this character immediately!
I love how Sam just randomly makes up “the seep” and then despite the fact that no one at the table knows what the seep even is, it just becomes a part of the lore.
He had the right idea of just throwing out an event and saying 'I'll work it out later'. I love doing stuff like that when I'm story crafting. Gives you a lot of room to build from!
A Seep implies that heavy groundwater led to a slow collapse into the caves they lived in, which to be fair, is absolutely terrifying.
@@AwesomeWookiee could also be some of sort of corruption, maybe something that melts stone into liquid.
@@phelps6205 If only they did a live playthrough this week with maps and combat and little cardboard stand-ins to show Daggerheat in action. And wouldn't it be wild if the VOD was already available on the Twitch channel for subscribers. Even more amazing if people could view it in the next day or two on this very CZcams channel?!
And Matt's brain is instantly working on what it was, what it is doing, where it came from, why it's happening.
Talisen on his computer, Sam making it up as he goes, Liam leaning into an accent ike its canon, Travis getting uncomfortable, Marisha climbing on chairs, Laura being indecisive in character creation, and Ashley being adorable chaos is all so on brand and i love it.
Gotta love Laura describing a potential outfit as "leathers and all super tight" and Travis just quietly chimes in "keep going" at 36:24
Haha Sam noticed
Her character is so sensual 😅
The fact that it's on a mushroom though😂
13:55 “My wife does what I tell him” “that’s true I’m very submissive”. I love these two next to each other already 😂
Why wife and not husband
@@PeakNutmeg why not 😂
@@PeakNutmeg boywife
@@PeakNutmeg the idea that a wife must be a woman is so old-fashioned.
Liam and Sam have been awesome like that since campaign1!
Travis, Marisha, Laura, and Ashley sitting together was a mistake 🤣🤣
Do it again
I would swap Ashley and Travis though... Ashley shouldn't be shouting over the table "stop it!" when Sam sneezes
@@MatronMugrai so true
That sounds like dialogue from an Addams Family movie 😂
they are sisters, because in that community, if a mother dies during birth, they plant a mushroom spore in the grave so that the child will have a sibling growing up to replace the loved one.
That's actually so cool👏
So like Megamind and Minion

Love this
Bunnie: Kexon, what do I do that annoys you, just really ruffles your feathers?
Kexon: Talking.
I love the beetle man already.
That was so natural and pure off the top of his head.
1:41:28 I was looking for that specific moment 😂😂😂
Shout out to the production team bc I am loving the different camera angles and game graphics on screen 👏
Production team been cooking'!!! you guys are greatly appreciated and noticed! love the work, keep it up!!!

The various angles are SO much better than the constant wide angle where you can barely tell what's happening. I hope they continue this format going forward
Nah they need to work on the angles and the hard cuts. They're cutting to the wrong people/people who aren't talking. I found it really offputting.
@@wadooshfulneed some superhuman shit to do that in live show. its not like they have scripts so they can do that shit fast enough :P...and yes most television "live shows" are scripted

Marisha's sultry voice (1:37:59) and Sam's surfer dude accent (1:30:27) are just a shade off their reenactment of Laura and Travis when they had their baby. (See the announcements in Campaign 2, Episode 26. "The Birth" is one of the greatest ad reads they've ever done.)

Travis' character feels a lot like a hollow knight NPC and i cannot stop thinking about it
Absolutely!! Thankyou !! It’s all I could picture
I was wondering why I liked his take on a Fairy so much 😂
OMG you can do a full Hollow Knight campaign in Daggerheart, that's so effin cool.
@@davidbodor1762 Hollow Knight has its own fan-made RPG system. Haven't played it, but by it seemed pretty cool when I looked through the rules
It reminded me of Kabbu from Bug Fables!
The moment Travis chose "Resting Bitch Face" as an Experience, I couldn't stop laughing. I'm STILL laughing right now! We love you Travis.
I really like the idea of how an Experience works, and you could add it to any RPG.
I love that players develop the map. As a GM, not only would it save a bunch of time, but also ensures everything on the map is something players care about
They sat the witches and the husbands next to each other 😂 thank you to whoever made the seating arrangement
Well, Liam is Irish, so I'm hooked.
Guys... Marisha made herself a mountain goat so she could PERCH!

It'd be nice if he didn't do the horrible stereotype accent though.
@@vampiresbane you mean... a heavy accent? Its almost like people with that accent exist. Get over it.
@@vampiresbane Bro has never heard a county Kerry accent, huh?
@@ruralmetalhead Probably hasn't watched Jacksepticeye either. Or the movie version of Mad-Eye Moody, who sounds just like that.
I love the idea of Classes in this game not necessarily being separate from each other, but more of a blend of talents. The shared domain system not only makes it easy to recognize what classes are good at and capable of, but the way it is set up will make any future classes/homebrew really easy to make.
Midnight and Blade can come together to make a true assassin class, who may not be good at talking to people like the rogue, but is particularily good at cutting people up from the shadows.
Grace and Valor could produce a Paladin, taking the talkative aspects of Bards and mixing them with the majestic tankiness of Seraphs
With 8 domains, there are so many additional combinations that can be done. I can't wait to see where this goes.
I love how as soon as they have a more flexible with ancestry, more than half of them choose an animal-base. Really opens up the creativity and I’m excited to see it in action!
lets shout out the critical role camera & editing team! the angles & close ups & game graphics are AMAZING
I'm not a fan, I like to see the others reactions
the cut to Proud Liam after Laura chose lockpicking and throwing blades was great
@@alleyesonme61686Alrighty
I‘m really getting old Tabletop with Wil Wheaton vibes from some of the editing of those Daggerheart videos… I love it.
I love that Laura doesn't even wait until the character creation is over before she starts flirting with Travis.
I would like to sincerely thank whoever did the subtitles 💜 Having the names labeled and everything is so incredibly helpful.
Yes, CR always has excellent subtitles, and I love it.
Travis literally going from one end of the spectrum to the other from Grog to a fairy wizard (small and squishy) is literally the epitome of "badass with soft gooey center". No wonder Laura married this man.
Sam might be the King of Bits, but the bit I love, love, love the most is Liam picking Sam’s character. It (plus Sam’s brilliance) really is the bit that keeps on giving. 😂❤️
Him making this worlds “calamity” something called the Seep is amazing 😂
He still found a way to make a Giant small.
Not even kidding, this is probably the most interesting character roster ever for Critical Role :D I hope they tag along well and we'll see more than just one one-shot of 'em together ;P
Random doesn't mean interesting, I don't see it, I think they are Novel, otherwise they kinda just cardboard cutouts
Agreed! The system seems to invite really creative character choices
I love these characters so far and definitely wanna see them for
More than just a one shot!
@@lordpepper6932lol they said interesting not random. Your interpretation of the characters is random and not interesting. Something can also be random and interesting. They were just expressing their excitement over these characters, you don’t have to be excited, but no need to bring them down, come on now. We’re all here to just celebrate a new addition to something we already love
@Ms.Kaleidoscope and I said they arnt interesting, they are "quirky" random, weird, a hodgepodge of character ideas that arnt even fleshed out yet...that's not interesting, that's a storyboarding session
I'm hoping this leads to a future where we have a daggerheart campaign, a dnd campaign, and candalara obscura all running at the same time. Obviously not with the same cast in all 3 because that'd be insane for them to keep up with.
Pause for effect…I’M A MOUNTAIN GOAT
Taliesin over there, giving off some major "you scored a what on your report card?!" dad vibes lol
Those glasses were fire. And speaking of glasses...I think Travis really should get some. He had his nose all the way in the paper at some points trying to read.
@@Kasino80 Travis has glasses, he wore them on Talks Machina once or twice, and in one or two episodes in Campaign 2.
He doesn't wear them often though.
I don't think he minds them, I think he just forgets them.
Marisha's Character Bunnie is a Cross between Lola Bunny and Jessica Rabbit.
5:25 You're a wizard, Travis!
He's on a long wizard's tale to delay the mantis missus.
Muscle wizard casts FIST
Idk if I'm just noticing this but...the ability to zoom in on each person as they're talking or reacting, I really like it and had been hoping for it for a while now. Especially for merch or if they're trying to show a dice off. Or even in deep one person roleplay sections with Matt or each other.
So Taliesin is Touche Turtle
It's interesting seeing behind the curtain and seeing how they develop their characters.
Sam with monents of crazy flashes of WTF genius. Then burrows into those ideas from there.
Liam getting the voice first.
Marisha coming prepared.
Laura having too many options then snuggling down into a character.
I'm glad that the whole cast is participating in the open beta themselves. So many people set their expectations for DnD based on Critical Role, so it helps to have a standard (even a very high standard) set for Daggerheart. Looking forward to the full session later!
1:30:51 Sam accidentally cooks with the full description and you can see the intrigue on matts face… you know he’s gonna cook up something great with this one.
1. i cannot believe they've never sat all the ladies together, that was an amazing choice, and 2. sitting Travis with them as well is HILARIOUS
It's so weird that they all ended up taking classes that has a domain shared with who they're next to.
Taliesin - Blade & Bone
Sam - Blade & Valor
Liam - Splendor & Valor
Travis - Codex & Splendor
Marisha - Codex & Grace
Laura - Grace & Midnight
Ashley - Arcana & Midnight
Edit: I'm now realizing they might have chosen their classes beforehand and then sat across the table based on that..
I just love how silly yet on task they are. Peak friendship goals.
Ashley " I feel like I'm doing it really good in my head "
Travis " you shouldn't listen to that "
Liam - dies -
55:19 The camera work is crazy on this and made me die ten times more! also dagger heart looks really fun!
This system reminds me a lot of the Cypher system and the Dungeon World system, between the emphasis on characters establishing pre-existing relationships and how a lot of it seems very freeform, very left up to the players' own interpretation. And, you know what? I love those systems, so this looks pretty cool.
Listening to Critical Role with elder scrolls and Witcher music in the background was so incredibly cozy. I like that they wrote their own music but wow I missed this vibe.
If Liam continues to play his sapien healer seraphim.
He should tots have a healing banana.
I can see him kneeling over a character going: " How you feeling?"
" Pretty dinkt up."
* shuffs Banana into the mouth of downed Character.*
" How about now? "
very soraka
“May I trweet your wounds”
Seraph, not seraphim
Simian not Sapien. Simian = Monkeys/apes. Sapien: from Sapient, means a creature that is self-aware like humans (hence why we're called homo sapiens).
Honestly, was thinking more along the lines of Rafiki from Lion King, "touching" someone upside the head to heal them. 😅
Mojo Dojo Casa House of 1000 Corpses is a hilarious before & after concept. Everyone focuses on Sam wacky shirt gags, but Tal has some of the best shirts.
I now have the hilarious mental image of the realistically sized frog that is Oppy standing on Xarlo's shoulder while Xarlo is standing on Pango's shoulder
omg your brain it’s so huge
It felt like the cast used this opportunity to make all kind of unusual choices for their characters that seems to be more wild than than their C3 characters. Kinda reminded me a bit about the Darrington Brigade one shot.
The idea of giving distances in combat from everything that you need to play Daggerheart (cards, pencil, character sheet and more than that respectively) is something so dumb and simple that is great.
It allows to shift from "theater of the mind" to scenario combat quickly and without losing time.
It has the weird sideeffect that most people outside the US have a longer "very far" distance though, because A4 paper is longer than US standard.
@@LandoLi I should feel that since I am Spanish XD
In icrpg they tell you to use a Banana for measuring distance
@@yuvalgabay1023 I tried that, end up eating my ruler by accident.
I love that we got the old school Witcher/Pillars music playing during this. I love the newer music used in C3 also. This music just brings me back to old episodes.
This whole video feels like C2!
The new music is cool, but I haven't realized how much I missed the old soundtrack until Twin Elms started playing!
I think it may actually be more difficult for me to focus on the C3 episodes because the soundtrack is effectively elevator music - it's quieter and less memorable. When I think back to important moments of C3, I have ZERO memory of the music. For C1 and C2 I have a much more vivid picture, because the music is there and it connects with the scene.
Witcher music is always a huge plus for me.
Not to mention old school Elder Scrolls music from Morrowind and I believe Oblivion.
I also heard guild wars 2 music in there I believe
28:52 Started hearing the old Vox Machina art block song and instantly teared up a bit- so many memories.
Reading this comment at that exact moment ❤
Don't know if this was said but Sam coming up with "The Seep" and it sounds like a legit thing that could happen in a TTRPG game just is brilliant! *chef kiss*
I love how creativity focused Daggerheart is! Already worked on Character Creation, and can't wait to GM the hell out of it!
It's beautiful and the best part is they can finally have fun with it without WOTC looming over their shoulders.
Yeah, definitely! I ran a character creation session, and I was amazed by how quickly backstories, the central conflict, and a starting location all spun out through brainstorming.
They should just scrap C3 and move over already. Finish C3 in comics...like Firefly did.
I hope to be pleasantly surprised, because reading through the Daggerheart documentation I felt like it was overly gamified.
The fact they've sat Sam and Liam together mean's we can expect absolute chaos...and I am down for it 🤣
When they were talking about the ranges I was in great agreeance that only a pencil width away is maybe just kinda 'Close' before realising they were talking like, the minis/tabletop scale
I almost died when Liam referred to the full Denim outfit was a "Canadian tuxedo" 😂😂 it totally is!!!!
Back to back to back new critical role videos about a new game with a different system. Excited to see this!

Thematically I love the idea of a shadow jumping mushroom. "We thrive in Shadow, sir!"
a frog being that changes its accent every day is a unique and wonderful beffiting the awesome Ashley Johnson.
The emotions playing over Taliesin's face as Matt first describes the game.
Love the close up camera changes focusing on people when they are talking, seems more dynamic but also easier to block out the background chatter
I hope they start doing this in the C3 show
Aw, one of my favorite things to do is read the lips of the players when they aren’t the focus. Or see them fight over food getting stolen. And stuff… 💔
The background chatter is half the fun 😢
No way, some of the most memorable stuff is from CR is all the different reactions and background stuff that happens that isnt part of the story.
@@Midori_Seabreeze You're dead on, I remember this was actually a thing they tried way way way way back but everyone hated it because they missed being able to se everybodys reactions.

The higher production value on this video makes the viewing experience much more engaging, would love to see this more often!

Yes and No. I really enjoy the usual set up of having the cameras on everyone at all times, that way we can see everyone's reactions to jokes and dramatic moments and stuff. That being said, getting to see the cards and stats they're talking about is indeed very nice.

Travis: I gotchu fam.
why does everyone have exceptionally pretty nails this session??? literally - Laura, Marisha, Matt they're SO PRETTY!
I mean, at this point they might as wel have invested in skilled make-up artists? Or some bonding nailcare?
Honestly i think red isn't Matt's color, the black was more fitting with his overall style. But at the end Matt has to like it and it is his choice alone.
@@adamryan977i think its just the really bright colours that dont fully suit him, i loved when he had purple and blue nails
I love seeing comments positive about Matt getting more comfortable with himself. Part of me has been paying attention to his clothing and style choices since his Between the Sheets talking about his body dysmorphia.
Agreed, and Matt’s choice is clearly magnetic polish. Looks nifty.
Session 0, building the party is very valuable content. I am happy you keep making these also for the Candela Obscure series.
Ashley really went and called her open beta character *Oppen* heimer *Beta* -bean. Love it.
I like the fact that there are cards that help break down all the different information. Even if you only use them to build a character, I think it makes building easier to interpret.
“Team shopping!”
“I will mark two stress to switch seats with someone.”
I understand this exchange.😂
It kept escalating.
Really cool of them to show this zero episode. Love seeing how they work through making characters.
So far, and I've been tinkering with character creation as I don't have a group to start with. But from character creation, I really hope they keep leaning into the card/domain system. But I really love that while they're thematic in their abilities, they leave a lot of the fluff around it open to interpretation. I hope that keeps up, so we can still have the mechanics of these abilities, but RP them in any way we want, so a "Guardian" doesn't have to be a holy Paladin, they could be a knight with arcane magics, or a thief doesn't have to be cunning and charismatic, but he can be psychic and charming his targets with magic/psychic powers, etc. Lot of really cool mechanics for thematic classes while letting us dictate the cool fluff around them. I'm really enjoying the potential of the system so far.
When The Seep happened, he couldn't pull Wango out in time? SAMUEL what the hell is your brain
Scanlin poked his head out from the part of Sam's brain he resides in for that one.
Fearne has really unlocked Ashley's chaotic energy on stream
I really love that I am feeling the same vibes as when I watched Vox Machina's Campaign for the first time. The joy of discovering, the not knowing what the fuck you are doing but having a lot of fun learning, and being very goofy in general. Congratulations on still having that after many years, and thank you a lot for sharing it with us
Sooo Ashley and Laura is the frog with a mushroom growing from it that went around on social media. But they separated and think of them self as sisters 😂
i really like the armor system. taking gambles and deciding when you want to cut down on things really makes it feel like a game instead of just "did it hit or not"
really cool overall from the characters, ancestries, the risk reward systems with armor and stress. it really mskes you think about how you want to play. congrats guys!
Travis as a Fairie Battle Wizard? HFS I cannot wait to see this.
i have to say that 1 single line can help a player feel at ease with a vision of their "play", it's just an example, but when Ashley is stating the 2 Foundations for sorcerer ( 9:45 ), the sentence "You can channel this element into unique, harmless effects" is one of the more impactful, for me, in the roleplay and immersion with the world and i'm in love.
I really love the camera angles and close ups they are fantastic!
The sitting order already looks chaotic, I love it
I absolutely adore the seemingly universal rule of: “I’m making a Fawn and I’m making them sexy.”
Fearne was the same. My Eloquence Bard for a Theros campaign was the same. Now, so is Bunnie.
I mean if you know anything about their mythological inspirations, fauns being hot isn’t that far off the mark.
So stoked for the full game to come out! Appreciate all the effort that was put into this gem. Keep up the great work!
This is probably my most favorite video on this entire channel. They might run a company. They might produce content, but they're still friends sitting around a table building characters and playing games. Matt is showing amazing prowess in running a session zero for any game ever. Laura agonizing over choices that only matter for the one-shot is really relatable. It's amazing and fantastic. Daggerheart feels like a lot at first, but the more they talk about it, the more it all kinda starts to make sense. Haven't watched the one-shot yet, but this video is getting me excited to see all these builds in action and learn more about the game since I'm the forever GM of my group, so I need to know the rules and understand character building to walk my players through it like Matt does here.

That is a great phrase!
Regarding minmaxing:
Lvl 10 Ridgeborn Galapa Vengeance Guardian can theoretically have an Armor value of 25 and also hit the attacker for the same amount anytime he blocks, seems awesome, but idk if it's not broken.
