      I know the accepted nomenclature with Westworld is to call 'em "timelines" but technically they're all the same timeline; there's no time travel or alternate histories or anything; it's just the show enjoys jumping between time periods. But timeline sounds cooler and it has one less syllable so I kinda understand why it won the term war. I just wish I lived in a timeline where we called 'em time periods.

      yea, tho as far as the employees are concerned, I feel like we sort of got some conflicting information in consecutive episodes. So if I missed something, please feel free to point out. because when the one younger woman employee (Elsa? elsie?) pulled the quick blackmail move on that tall thin geeky low level "butcher" employee in order for him to give her access to the Woodcutter's damaged body (she showed the kid she had surveillance footage of him sneaking downstairs and fucking one of the female hosts while it was like sitting on a shelf in storage or whatever (and she tells him "people think that hosts don't log sexual encounters even when they're back in the compound for maintenance or processing [or whatever], but it's not true!")
      But then now in this latest episode, Maeve's talking about all these "lonely boys down here in the lab", and why do you think they made it so you can easily erase part of a host's activity?", so ya know, basically saying 'this is how you perverts get away with continually fucking the hottest robots over and over again without being reprimanded.

    And it's a fantastic example of what happens, late in a project when someone points out a REALLY easy way to have avoided the infinite levels of complexity that everyone's been struggling with during all the previous months of development... (which always happens -- just sayin).

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 Před 5 lety +13

      Well that's actually kind of explained. The robots were really designed to have human consciousness uploaded into them, so they needed those robots to work and feel like humans in order to upload a consciousness, so that the consciousness could operate the body and still have the mental processes that a human does, like emotion. Otherwise, any consciousness you upload would essentially just be an AI with memories of a human, but without things like emotion, the memories of a human wouldn't really govern the behavior of the AI.
      Another issue is even control mechanisms can fail. AI's process huge amounts of data, more than can be sifted through or checked on the fly for irregularities. For example, in real life, when people let two AI machines talk to each other, they began to essentially create their own language that humans can't even decipher. Suddenly a single letter in a specific order, could potentially translate into a whole set of instructions.
      Most people don't realize it, but when you say, open a program on a CPU, all the data processed on the CPU can be massively larger than the original file being opened. It's just all done on the CPU physically, rather than being stored anywhere. There are for example, billions of transistors on a CPU. If you looked at those transistors as physical bytes of data, the CPU alone is capable of essentially holding a few gigabytes of "data" every cycle. If you multiply that by Mhz or Ghz, you effectively have a number like 2GB times 3000 million worth of changes happening on the CPU every second, which is MASSIVE. It's actually quite interesting. And that's just with today's current high end CPU's. Now imagine the Westworld robots processing power.
      To put it simply, you could never completely know what's going on in an AI's mind unless it told you. AI's can do things in ways we can never fully understand, and that could eventually lead them to be able to get around their programming, even if it's hardcoded.

      A friend of mine who saw the original movie explained it like this: The guns have sensors that can detect whether they're pointed at a human or not. If they are pointed at a human, they fire a harmless bullet; if they are pointed at anything else, they fire a real bullet. That's why when the robots get their hands on real guns, they can kill people.

      What about knives? How the heck would Samurai World work? How do you have a sword that can bisect a host while only bruising a human?
      Also what if you shoot a host in the head where the expensive memory orb is stored?
      What if two humans try to kill each other with knives?
      Why the heck do they have working nitroglycerine? And how would they fake that if humans were caught in the blast?
      I have many more questions. The whole show is very dumb but it's such a fun spectacle with some really great acting that I'm willing to slog through the stupidity to enjoy some really fun TV.
      Honestly, if you had the tech to make virtually indistinguishable humanoid robots, you open a massive franchise of brothels and torture chambers and such, or you sell 'em to governments for military and espionage purposes. What you don't do is buy a massive island in the South China Sea and construct an intricate replica of the post Civil War American Southwest to collect blackmail and personal data on the superwealthy while also experimenting on the nature of consciousness.
      I mean, Pariah alone is such a massive waste of resources. You got all these robots there running their loops, getting shot up by robots, being refurbished by employees (so you presumably have to pay for their wages and the replacement parts and such) but it's apparently a secret location that hardly anyone ever goes? The park as it exists only really makes sense as some multi-multi-billionaire's personal obsession that the world is welcome to enjoy only because he wants to show off, like a model railroad that got out of hand. It would never in a million years turn a profit.

      That's not as crazy as it sounds. Presumably, creating true AI required a departure from traditional hardware and/or software paradigms. Imagine, for instance, that the AI store memories like an actual human brain in some sort of neural network. It may be impossible from the outside to pick and choose what to delete. Have seen the freaky images from google deep mind (search for deepdream)? That was a debugging tool they had to invent because they couldn't tell what the program was doing.

    The HBO site quoted the cost to visit Westworld at $40k per day....which is a bargain on one hand if you're already super rich, but on the other hand that number really doesn't seem like enough to fund the upkeep and maintenance of the park. It would be enough if the park were just actual desert with some androids in some small towns. But they've hinted that the entire park is 100% under their control and possibly totally underground. This would mean the park is MASSIVE. If the park were in an actual real desert guests could be bitten by snakes, stung by scorpions, or mauled by other roaming wildlife. The economics of the scope of Westworld just don't add up. There's simply not enough rich people in the world to make Westworld go round.

      yea the flick came out in 1973, James Brolin and Richard Benjamin as the two main guests, Yul Brynner as the "Man In Black" robot (part of why so many initially assumed Ed Harris' guy was going to be like a rogue host). It's frankly nothing to write home about , VERY simplistic story and plot progression (which is what made this such a great idea for a remake, especially as a series), but it looks like they maaaaaaay be sort of using the movie as some flashback canon here in the show every once in awhile. Or at the *very least*, they're working at some pretty cool easter eggs. When Bernard went down to the 80+ sub-level to connect with the really old computer, that whole environment looked just like the underground labs that get all wrecked at the end of the original movie, AND you can see one host in the background of one of the Bernard shots. The thing's standing right up against the wall and it's out of focus, but it EASILY could be the Yul Brynner cowboy, including the same hat. I noticed it right away (well I did take a quick re-watch of the film just before the series started)

      For one, the developer has only licensed the robots for use in the park, with his word as the final say in how these robots are to be used.
      I for one, believe the theory that the robots did rebel against humans in the park 30 some years ago, and are illegal outside the park and its security.
      That being said, in the latest episodes we see that there is corporate espionage taking place.
      I do believe that some of the technology is being used outside the park for human betterment. In one episode, a guest recognizes the MiB ( Ed Harris ) and thanks him for his contributions and helping a family member, I believe MiB is a heavy investor, and also is the same person Williams .

    The premise behind Westworld is pretty silly. Wouldn't it make more sense to create some kind of VR environment, which I'm sure their technology level can manage, rather than build tons and tons of robots and populate a massive park, all of which must cost an obscene amount of money?

    • @Piaapo
      @Piaapo Před 2 lety

      @JordanSedai Před 7 lety +12

      I think CZcams has a way to notice when channels that tend to get big jumps in views, once in a while, and it will kind of automatically push them to trending because it knows that it will be popular. Primitive Technology is a good example, he only posts videos like once a month, but every single one trends. Jenny's case is a bit weird though, since only her skit interviews trend... not her other stuff. I think reddit or something has to do with the burst in views, but it is wierd.

    • @heathercalun4919
      @heathercalun4919 Před 6 lety

      Yes you can. They can't make robot actors because until very recently, the robots weren't sentient. All the suffering is specifically to guide the robots towards sentience, and the stuff about entertaining the guests is just a means to that end. It's kind of a spoiler, but yeah, Ford doesn't actually care about keeping the park functioning as an entertainment site. I predict that after the robots escape and see the real world, they're going to come to agree with the humans that the stories are more valuable than reality, and the plot will resolve with them all deciding to fake their way through their lives.

Jonathan Nolan said in interview in tv show they are simunation like .. smart bullets. will hurt & sting a bit like paintball bullets to guests but won't be lethal. bullet detects whether it's been shot at a guest or a host, and decides to vaporize itself or blow body parts apart

    The original movie came out in 1973, and I wonder if that isn't part of why things are the way they are- fantasy still wasn't quite as mainstream (like, the literature was there but it hadn't exploded yet), Dungeons & Dragons didn't even exist yet, so most people's point of reference for make-believe was playing cowboys, hence, cowboy-world.
    The magic bullet thing was always weird though. I think Michael Crichton did a better job with the same concept in Jurassic Park- a dinosaur zoo is a much easier sell and you've got a built in explanation for why it's dangerous when things break down.

    • @rossmandell8734

    "Westworld: Go LARPing with the brother-in-law you hate!"
    "Yeah, speaking of which; how do you lose?"
    "It's just a game. You can't die"
    "Yeah no, I get that. But most games I've played, there's still a way to lose without needing to actually die? That's kind of what makes it a game and not a walking sim"
    "The bullets can't hurt humans"
    "But couldn't there be a health point system or something? And then when you reach zero, you have to leave the park? It could be like laser tag, at least. You mentioned earlier that the game gets more difficult the further you travel. How is that supposed to work if there are no consequences when someone shoots you?"
    "Why would anyone want that?"
    "Because otherwise it sounds like the game would get boring pretty fast... like a walking sim... and then people might drive themselves crazy because you promised them a challenge and instead they just went around killing and raping people and no one stopped them. Like what if someone reached the edge of the park on their first try? What would they do after that?"
    "If they really have that much of a problem with it, they can always buy the park and implement these changes themselves"
    "Actually, it would probably make more financial sense as well. If players had a health meter that could be depleted, it would give them a reason to leave and come back over and over again. Right now, it kind of sounds like people will just stay in the park indefinitely, which raises some questions about how the stories reset every day. And since it's just a flat entry fee, you're essentiallly describing an arcade where you never have to put more quarters in unless you walk away from the machine"
    "Oh don't worry about money. We've got investors"
    "I see. And what happens when the investors want to pull out of this obviously financially unsound business venture?"
    "We kill them"
    "Oh..."

It's a bit hokey but there are some very suspenseful moments if you ignore the quality of the 70's-era fx. There are a lot of nods to it in the show.
