  • Have you ever lived for a few nights on a tiny houseboat in the middle of the wilderness? I’m not sure how, but Dustin somehow found out that there is a rental company near Orlando, Florida that would let us stay on a tiny houseboat. He was so giddy about it that we decided to spend our anniversary floating on the St. Johns River on a tiny houseboat. I have to say, it was such a unique adventure, completely different than what we would normally do. Not only that you can stay on it, but you can also drive these adorable vintage tiny houseboats and explore the St. Johns River. It was like camping in a camper van, but on the water, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by gators. If you’re looking for a unique experience near Orlando, Florida, spending a few nights on the tiny houseboat is a must!

    I bought a Lil HOBO from a marina owner for $4,000 back in 1974. It had a blown 75 HP engine (way too much power) that I traded for a 15 HP Merk . I brought it from the Chesapeake up to Philadelphia for a homeless NamVet to live on. A marina owner (veteran) gave him a job in the yard (yard dog) in exchange for work and beer money. He lived on it for 4 years before he ended up in the VA hospital.

    We just did this trip earlier this month but were on a different boat, the yellow one. The first night we stayed in the same place you stayed and the limpkins were calling all night. The second night there was a storm forecast so we anchored in the middle of Lake Woodruff. Lots of fishermen in the morning there. The storm missed us after all, the whole trip was great! since it was January there were manatees all around so we went very slow most of the time, our boat definitely did go faster. We went through a small creek that we just barely fit through in a couple of spots. There were three of us on the boat, two adults and a 12year old. Blue springs was closed because it was manatee season but the kid lost his desire to swim after he saw a few alligators. It was tight on the boat but mostly because we brought way too much food, camera equipment and stuff. We didn't cook on the boat but I brought a 500W battery and a wheeled refrigerator / cooler along with a couple solar panels to keep the cooler and batteries charged. We rigged one solar panel to the roof of the boat and didn't use the second one. We kept the cooler charged and brought food that you only had to mix with hot water or eat cold. We brought a portable water boiler for the hot food. We would absolutely do it again. We had a blast!

    • @LiveThatAdventure
      @LiveThatAdventure  Před rokem +1

      That's awesome! We might have to try to get the yellow boat next time for a couple extra mph :D. I wish we would have seen more manatees. We might have to go in Dec next time. Those tight spots can get pretty exciting! We got a Lil sideways in one and it was like that scene in Austin Powers where he is trying to get that little golf cart unstuck. That's a super smart idea with the fridge and boiler! We are coming from CA so it might be hard to fly with a jetboil but that's a brilliant idea! Glad to hear that you guys had fun!

      Thank you so much! Hopefully, we can show you some awesome adventures! You are 100% correct about interacting with the camera; that is our goal for every video from here on out. We are actually off to shoot in Bryce this week and it will be the first videos with this new style of shooting. :) Vy has a super cute voice that you will be able to enjoy as well. Up to this point it has mainly been be because I was trained in radio broadcasting so I'm super comfortable on the mic, and also because Vy typically edits the photos and runs the website. I take care of the video side of things. Even though the frogs were really loud, I usually sleep to white noise so it was oddly relaxing... just at a slightly crazy volume :) Neither of us fish, but I bet you would catch some pretty crazy stuff out there. Thanks again for the sub. Stay safe out there! :)

    There are tons of little boats like this that are great. the R-23 by ranger is a little 23' "tug" great for day trips and overnighters, the R-27 though gives you a nice kitchen with stove and oven, wet bath, lots of storage space, its suitable to stay on for days or even weeks at a time.
    another option is the, Nordic Tug 26 its kitchen is about en par with the r-23's with 2 burner and microwave... but its got more walking room. nice wet bath and such. Given it only has a bar fridge, its a weekend cruiser, and the next step up from there is the 34 pushing it into a much larger class then the rangers 23', 25' and 27'.
    The advantage though to the Nodric is its built for rougher weather... sea and lake rather then river.

      @@LiveThatAdventure That's the thing about these, these are more for big lake and ocean, they preform better then the flat bottom houseboats in areas with big waves. So great lakes.
      Now there is one other "strange" option. and thats the Electricat 450 and 600. (there's an 830 now) the number corrisponds to the length in cm. So 14.7 feet, 19.6 and 27 foot. They are electric though you can opt to mount gas motors. have lots of space for solar. And its essentially just a big open space inside that you can configure how ever you want. Add in a solar generator and you can do what ever with it.
      But around here, you see all kinds of boats, from day trawlers, to massive 2 masted liveaboard schooners and Ketches. Its a busy lake. And every year some big sailboat ends up beached on a sandbar laying on its side.

      But the little R-23's start at 130k for a good duration trawler... that you can stay aboard for a week or 2 at a time... thats not horrable.
      Nordic 26's are a bit more expensive but with a 600 mile range at 8 knots... you could actually do an alaska run with those. You'd have to port hop... but still, running up the coast of BC then alaska...

      There were definitely a couple of tense moments for sure. Thankfully we made it through without any problems. We also lucked out on the weather. As long as we were on the move it was actually pretty pleasant. The nights were a lil warm though.

      That entire area has had high water since Hurricane Ian went through.

    Came here to see the boat and how you guys slept in it and what it’s like in there. Damn what a shame.

      Don't you worry, we hope to go back and film the sequel. Sometimes it is hard to guess what people will want to see. We thought that viewers would be more interested in the adventure rather than the daily life on the boat, but we will get it right next time!
