    It's weird/strange/awkward because smaller eyes, especially from Asian people, have a negative connotation attached to it in American society. We even have insults and stereotypes associated with small asian eyes. It's SO uncommon to hear compliments about them compared to people with "bigger eyes".

    • @jenniferchoi6891
      @jenniferchoi6891 Před 5 lety +12

      Cyphrum ᕙ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ᕗ Its more so about western culture, but America plays such a big role in that so... yeah the issue def has something to do with American culture. I can see why you think that way, but as a Korean-American who’s actually living and studying in South Korea right now, I will tell you this. There’s a difference on how East Asian culture views their eyes compared to how Western culture view asian eyes. People in East Asia don’t understand what it’s like growing up with the typical stereotypes/insults associated with asian eyes that so many Asian-Americans have to deal with. The lack of representation for the asian community in America is another important element to mention. Historically, America has put white has the standard of beauty for so long. Then factored where to put black beauty, asian beauty, Latin beauty, etc on the spectrum. So it’s not just Asians in America that gets affected by this but the whole minority.
      South Korea is the top plastic surgery capital of the world if not 2nd, but that doesn’t mean only Koreans get things done at these elite hospitals/clinics. SO MANY foreigners all over from Asia, America, and Europe literally travel to Korea to get procedures done since we have such advanced technology that gives natural results. Eyelid surgery is considered a pretty simple procedure. Just because Asians get surgery, doesn’t mean they want to be white. It would be so delusional for an Asian person to think that they would be a step closer to being a white person just because they got their eyes or nose done. Each country in Asia have their own beauty standards, but specifically for Korea, a lot Koreans don’t look down on people who don’t have double eyelids since it can also be seen as charismatic. Lastly, do you know what is a double eyelid surgery and how it takes place on asian eyes? Asians want natural results so when we say “double eyelids”, we’re not talking about western or white peoples type of double eyelid because we don’t see it as the same. Does that kinda make sense?

    Don't think this is okay.. I'm Asian and I was offended by a lot of what he was saying! This prof defending himself saying no it isn't offensive, it's just like asking someone to come down with brown hair or blonde hair. But it's not. It's like asking for one really fat student and one slim student to identify themselves and come stand in front of the lecture theatre.
    Within European cultures and also Asian cultures small eyes are generally considered less attractive. Hence, things like double eyelid surgery are so popular in Asian countries, not necessarily to create a double lid, but just to make the eyes appear wider.
    He's picked out a student to come to the front for having 'the smallest eyes' like 'slits.' He's basically targeting a student for a generally considered 'unattractive' feature that people make fun of, and tease Asians about, that many Asians are self conscious about, and making him stand in front of everyone and be remembered/defined by that characteristic. These are impressionable young college kids and I feel like public scrutiny like that could have a big effect on some people. Also, it's not really like Josh willingly volunteered. He picked the boy out from the audience and asked him to come down, and it's hard to say no to a direct request from a professor, in front of a lecture full of people who would all know you refused him if you said no.
    On a side note I think that Josh is extremely attractive and further to that, has incredible style. He probably felt wildly uncomfortable throughout this segment, yet just remains really dignified about it.

      Yeah, I mean, I would definitely consider Kazakhstan to be a part of Asia, especially since they broke away from the Soviet Union and became an independent country, but maybe when it was still part of the Soviet Union, it could be considered as a European country. Plus, according to its Wikipedia page, “Some argue that Kazakhstan may be considered a European country because Kazakhstan's Western region is on the European continent and meets the Council of Europe's criteria for European inclusion.”

      Agreed. Kazakhstan is an Asian country with a tiny chunk of it's territory west of the Url river in Europe but culturally it's not European except for the Russian influence of the past few centuries. Implying it's strictly a European country as this professor does is quite a stretch.
      The people of Central Asia (Turkestan) are largely a mixture of Mongoloid Turkic speakers who conquered and assimilated the aboriginal Iranic-Schythian inhabitants of the region. That's why there is a gradient of phenotypes between East Asian and Caucasoid. Some areas like Kirghizstan and Kazakhstan had a high number of Turkic conquerers relative to the population. Other areas like Xinjiang, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan not so much and is evidenced by their less pronounced Mongoioid features .

Lol, that just shows you are clueless to what's going on here. SOC 119 is a really incredible class and those who take it say it opens their eyes in ways they didn't think before. It's about deconstructing racism and bias. Sam is a brilliant professor.

    Eyes are not signs of races. There are Europeans too with small eyes and not just the Scandinavians. There are also many East Asians with non-slanted eyes, too. But you can always see the faces of them and tell whether someone is European or Asian or African or Indian or whatever. And the Korean guy in the video has one of the most slanted eyes among even all the East Asian eyes. I have been to so many countries in the world including most of East Asia, that includes South Korea, and South East Asia. A lot of Koreans that I saw didn't have eyes that slanted. Now I am not saying these to put some people down or what but we like what we like. For example, there are a lot of non-East Asians who like East Asians and end up having kids with them. Afterall it's just eyes. They can be changed by surgery, etc. I mean it isn't like skin color or something else that you can't change and not even by surgery.
