In asia, there’s a ranking system when it comes to grades. In the west, they don’t really care much as long as the student is doing well. I went to a relatively small-sized high school in the Philippines and I never knew they had a ranking system that only announces the top 5 students who rank high in their class. I was top 4, which surprised me since I was still adjusting to the culture and surroundings. There’s so many differences but this struck out to me the most. The schools create this system that pit students against each other. It may not seem bad but it causes a lot of stress sadly.

Somehow, it was kinda true and through. I am asian too, my parents are strict to me, i am studying whole time like crazy and it was never enough for them. Then after going outside the world, people praise me for what i "plainly" do. Sometimes i kinda jealous to other parents who are praising their children, children are acting selfish, but parents understand them.
Being full obedient to parents and society are having bad effect too. One day, i watch news about kidnapping children. Children are so obediently follow the order of kidnapper, because they are taught to be obedient, but they cant tell which is right and wrong, they are just obedient blindly.
Same case when children are taught independent. My friend is having big dream and big confidence, but somehow she is very impulsive way to do it, i wonder if she ever thinking about consequences. She fulfilled her dream in the end, but for last time i checked, she cant keep her profession dream stable. She end up doing some odd jobs for living, and then i cant still message her. Let's just hope it's because she quit being so internet, though i miss her.

So after watching the video and reading the comments, btw hi from 2020 (I miss going to lectures but COVID), I feel like the prof makes very good points. His comment about the international student not expected to do well on the English exam is based on what he was explaining from the experiment. I took a first year sociology course as well and there was something similar to this in one chapter where they explain how our culture and societal norms start in our childhood. It is the people that surround us from a young age that shapes how we see ourselves and the world in front of us. So for the international student who admits that her parents don’t outwardly show affection and praise is expected to say “My math is good but my English was not so good”. As a Chinese person raise in Canada, people would look at me and assume the same thing, because of their perception of the outside world that they learnt growing up is “most Chinese people are good at math but not so good at English”. That is their perception until they find out I’m an English and Business major who is terrible at math. At the end, where someone tweeted about the sorority girl, had a different perception. Their view of the girl who was white and confident in speaking about her accomplishments lacks the acknowledgment of how she grew up culturally and socially. With parents who praised her inwardly and outwardly, she felt that it was acceptable to outwardly express her achievements. Both are not bad, both are different and some might like one over the other but this is only based on majority. Sociology looks at the culture and society as a whole which means they don’t always point out the outliers. Other sociology courses delve deeper at specific cultures and societies but that usually in the upper year courses. So yeah, maybe you can check out those instead!

USA is really unique in the sense that you could actually do these classes because of the diversity. It doesn't matter what good qualities any of the different cultures have, because in the US you have all of the good qualities. USA is a country made up of H1-B, take away the H1-B and you lose a lot of good quality individuals.

That’s consistent with other studies, says Jean Twenge, Ph.D., who has examined the effect of race on self-confidence. “Research shows black women score higher on self-esteem than women of other races and ethnicities, which may seem surprising, given the long history of prejudice and discrimination they have faced," she said."

I have watched many of this professors videos and I am always amazed at the low level of intelligent thinking of the student body at Penn State. But I am also baffled at the lack of thorough understanding of the subject by the professor.
Why do I say this: well Asian culture “lack of putting themselves out there” has nothing to do with them being humble. Asian people are the most insecure people on the planet. They live to show “status” because they can distinguish themselves that way. They all live super luxury brands and love to show that they can afford it. But why do they not talk about achievements or broadcast it? Because of the fear of failure. To be “out there” and fail is the biggest embarrassment. So they fail in silence- no one knows. In western culture -particularly American- failure is less embarrassing- Americans think so you fail- try again- did you give it your all?
