The part that got me was her saying zero tolerance, we don't use that word. Ride my bus for a week it's used as a greeting, an insult, a question and so much more.

From what I see. This is the only class that actually challenges these ideas. In this climate, I don't think people really how brave and important this professor really is.

I think he does a better job than many, but everyone in the class knows he is playing devil's advocate because he is a leftist. I think he actually believes trump is a racist, which is why he didn't challenge the notion that Trump is a racist. Disagreement with a black personal is literally a fireable offense in academia. I, an American Indian, had a black woman sitting in to speak to my class. At the end she said all police are racist and persecute black men. I said it’s not racism it’s brutality and gave the Tony Timpa example. She complained to administration 2 weeks later in spite of being cordial and friendly with me even saying she wanted to come back to class and talk again that same afternoon.

If you're going to recite a quote, then yes, by _definition_ for it to be a quote, it has to be verbatim what the person said, otherwise you're merely relating or paraphrasing what you think a person said. The correct thing to say, would be, "He didn't have to quote him, and could've just said he used the word", etc.

That's exactly the problem with Zero Tolerance policies (and philosophies). It creates binary thinking that actually encourages hypocrisy and create enemies out of supporters.

For some it's a low IQ problem, for most though it is simply about smearing someone not agreeing to their ideology. You just choose to be ignorant then. The black girl with the male name being a prime example of that.

I majored in Sociology in 2013 and none of my classes looked like this! Fun subjects to think and talk about. It’s nice hearing about conservative perspectives in a field that has sooo little room for those students.

We need to see more of this because this is the reality that we dealt with at that time, there was a huge upheaval in our lives and we were in a politically charged atmosphere. A group of people listening to a perspective without an opposing perspective is what the problem is with our academia.

Taking just one lecture like this of this incredible, courageous professor is more valuable than most liberal degrees in their entirety. The question is whether it can undo the damage.
After many lectures of listening to this guy trying to figure him out. I truly think this is the lvl of teaching we all need to hear. All sides with eyes open and unapologetic

I don’t agree with everything he says but he does a great job providing a differing perspective than what most of these kids are used to hearing and he does a wonderful teaching them to think. I applaud him for doing that.

What would really be interesting would be to do a completely anonymous survey amongst his students to find out how many lean conservative and how many liberal and then later have an open show of hands for whichever side the students associate. We might then have a better idea of whether conservatives are afraid to speak or not in American universities today.
I was very excited about this discussion at first. I hoped real progress would be made. Sadly, it is clear that even a professor with a platform can't clear out all the brain washing our youth has endured. It's so irrational it hurts.
Give it time. The professor is just planting seeds. It takes time for ideas and thoughts to grow

Lots of conservatives voice their perspectives the world over. that is why we have democracies. Democracies are the result of conservative people pushing for a better way to manage countries.

The professor pushes back on some things, like the hat, really well. But, he lets a lot of untruths slide by too.
He can't deal with *everything*, though; he'd never get anywhere in the class at all.

The fact that the guy at the end in the top row got cut off so disrespectfully clearly demonstrates where we are at.
The girl in the front's argument against him was that Trump actually is a racist, and she used two quotes that are known and web-searchable. In reality, neither one of those quotes are racist. Her argument wasn't weak, it was invalid. She interrupted him with an INVALID argument that didn't even address what he said. Yes, we are in big trouble. We are in Mike Judge's idiocracy already.

I love that she says that the n word is still used casually and that it should be zero tolerance, but fails to mention that it's mostly Black people using.
Yeah I've only heard it once used as an insult in person and that was on the street where a black woman had already called a white woman several racist things and the white woman called her the n-word in response and said "what? you can call me that but I can't call you a n?" still unacceptable but she had a point...

I'm 50, and I've NEVER heard the word used by anyone my age or younger- only a few people my grandparents age, and I've lived in every time zone in the country while in the military.
I hear it uses all the time in music and there are many that are young.

So the African girl doing business recognises context but the African-American girl doing sociology doesn't? Gotcha, culture is everything. I am an immigrant in my country but I am the same colour as the majority population. I know as a FACT that myself and my immigrant friends (same colour, different countries of origin) even having lived here for decades, have a different cultural outlook. It has nothing to do with colour.

My issue is that ‘liberal’ is always presented as ‘good’ and ‘desirable’ and ‘right’ and conservatives presented as ‘bad’, ‘uneducated’ or just ‘haven’t got the memo yet’. And that’s objectionable to me (speaking as a ‘classical liberal’ with both left and right leanings on different topics). I loathe the quasi religious tribalism and irrationality of the modern Left as much as I always used to loathe it’s counterpart on the Right. Nowadays I seem to find conservatives far more reasonable and aligned with my values which feels weird but I can’t deny the truth. I will never tribally align with any particular side but right now I find the modern Left FAR FAR more dangerous than Trump or MAGA.
Pre trump I didn't think republicans were bad. Today It's devoid of policy and anti American. I spent my entire adult life in service and I never voted Nationally. This video did not age well.

I’ve watched several of his videos. At the end of all of them I felt his students had learned something. Not this one. Such closed minded kids.
I think a big part of that was because of the certain volunteers (or the one volunteer). She was not open minded.
It's called fear. There is no upside to admitting you just learned some and maybe the Papa John guy is not really racist. But there is downside to being misunderstood or being misquoted.

Well, On one hand you've got a single professor trying to teach these students critical thinking skills, whilst on the other hand all their other professors are teaching liberal agenda's and hate. He's sadly outnumbered and unfortunately professors like him don't normally stay employed.
Zero Tolerance is concept loved by those without the desire and/or ability to discern.

In the end we find out that Sandman was just standing there, and the Native American guy came up to him and started pounding the drum in his face, and Sandman was just kind of frozen, having no idea what it means, or what to do. Yet somehow when someone comes over and starts pounding a drum in his face, he is racist?

It’s good to see that at least there are some professors that are attempting to teach students how to think vs what to think. It’s a drip compared to the ocean that has consumed our colleges and universities but it warms my soul to see that someone has the cajones to stand up for truth. Keep it up prof we desperately need this to spread.

I was expecting better from Penn State students. I went to a party school, drunkenly floated various rivers on an inner tube for three years, got chlamydia twice, and Texas State gave me a college degree…dimwitted as I am , even I can understand an opinion that is oppositional to my own. I also posses the humility to know I could be wrong.
So much of what he said fell on deaf ears. The end of the video was nothing but "the liberal media narrative" down to tge out of context quotes and misquotes. Hopefully he got through to some of them.

Why don’t you go back to college but now instead of to learn go to speak and teach? You clearly feel some regret about not having open mind back then and so the best way for you to give back to yourself and to the country really is to speak to college students and tell them your story and try to connect with them. I had some great professors that used these kinds of discussion methods. I was always the one pushing the discussion with my peers. Why not, it's college? That's what students should do - debate, discuss.

At the end of the video a guy in the audience was trying to make a point and because she didn't agree the big mouth female started shouting him down which is the typical response you get from liberals when you try to debate them.

Yea she really put a stretch on the lesson right?!? Out of this whole thing I think she got me the absolute maddest. Wtf is she thinking?!? What she said and doesn’t realize is that she then can’t go to any rallies for causes for minorities which we all know she most likely goes to. She’s also saying men have no part in making babies and men shouldn’t care about a life. So many things wrong I could go on and on but she was THE WORST! Thinks she had a “gotcha” moment but sounds absolutely ignorant and dense it was a painful ending.

This teacher is how you reach students. Speaking cool, saying dude. Relating to the age of his students. I had a science teacher in HS like him and even the worst kids in the school, did well and were engaged in class. It's truly amazing. More teachers need to take notes.
I don't like that he calls the young ladies "duds" and "guys". It's disrespectful. "Ladies", "gals" if he wants to appear relatable would be more appropriate. However, in one of his videos he corrects a young lady to make sure she says the name of one of her male classmates. Very odd.

It’s sad that “conservatism” gets one day of understanding. This really indicates a significant inherent bias here. This is also based upon listening to many of these streams from this same channel. I’m not blaming this professor. Im thankful that he understands and is willing to look at the other views.

this is a much needed conversation but the fact that something as complex as everything in this video being discussed in an hour time frame is just simply not enough. Something like this needs to be in like a 10-hour seminar with both a teacher and a seperate moderator.

Journalist should be impartial. Journalist and media should report facts without twisting towards personal bias. It’s not just that he quoted, it’s that this man was trying to maintain a standard against racist actions. He was trying to stand AGAINST the casual use of awful language being associated with his company.
This is why any university SOCIOLOGY department makes little monsters in 4-5 short years. First question in any employment interview I perform: Do you have a sociology degree? (now, that is profiling for stupidity, but I must protect my company from idiocy.)

You've taught well, but I don't think your students have learned from this lesson. I was invigorated at the start, but I was also demoralized by the end.
Holy shit; this is my first time seeing anything by Prof. Richards.... we'd be in much better shape as a planet and civilization if we had another hundred of him around the world.
The fact that there are no conservatives willing to speak up at the end is also very telling.

Kyle Rittenhouse would be great, but why not even go back to Charlottesville and look at Trump's actual "racists" statements. Maybe even draw a Venn diagram to show how good people can exist on either sides of an argument (and how a person can also condemn evil people on either side as well).

About Nick and the drummer. Everyone missed another point; why should nick have had to yield to ANYONE invading his space. The drummer had no, zero, nada for Nick's space.

yeah I'm a very conservative leaning libertarian (Aym Rand flavor) and I absolutely LOVE this guy, the students themselves seem pretty much beyond repair unfortunately bit what's he's doing, or at least attempting to do, is incredibly brave and important for the future of this country.
