  • Program Notes: Don Pasquale, premiering in Paris at the Theatre-Italien, in 1843, appeared at the end of Donizetti's career. Considered an Opera Buffa, it is a reflection of the perspectives of the Neapolitan art scene during this period. This form of comedic opera has its roots in the Intermezzos that were performed between acts of an opera. These short compositions dealt with regular characters singing in the dialect of the region, as a detour from the early operas of the day that dealt with gods and heroes and lofty themes of existence. Commedia was comprised of short comedic stories with music and comic bits, featuring stock characters and stock story genres. The common thread is servants outwitting their masters and helping young lovers achieve their desires. Don Pasquale has been seen historically as marking the end of the Opera Buffa period and the beginning of tragi-comic stories with a sentimental happy ending. The opera can be seen as foreshadowing the growth of melodrama over comic hijinks in stories developing in the mid to late 19th century. Don Pasquale has a wonderful history of reaching audiences around the world ever since its premiere. The opera first reached the United States in 1849 and was first performed at the MET in 1900. Opera Project Columbus is proud to share this timeless story of love, forgiveness, and personal discovery.
