    A couple of updates from CES to the specs discussed in this video. The monitor panels will apparently offer 1000/400/250 nits brightness which we believe is for 1-3%, 10% and 100% APL measurements. The durability improvements for monitors is 1.5x, and for TV's it is 2x.

    • @JFinns
      @JFinns Před 7 měsíci +6

      250nit @ 100% APL for QD-OLED sounds about the same as last year, but 2x durability is of course great for long term usage. Personally I'd just want a desktop size 16:9 27" 1440p 240Hz QD-OLED.

      May i ask if gen 3 TVs like S90D will have the new pixel layout different from eg S95B?

      I believe all the panels have the updated pixel shape/size from gen 2 onwards

      @@tftcentral The Rtings review of both S95B(1st gen) and S95C(2nd gen) show a microscopic picture of the pixel layout and it's exactly the same. I have no idea what the real situation is at this point. Maybe they kept the same for the first two generations specifically for TV panels and will update finally on 3rd gen.

    • @tftcentral
      @tftcentral  Před 7 měsíci +5

      Perhaps that change was only applicable to monitor panels where there’s a focus on text clarity. Looking back at the slides we were taken through that only really talks about it in the context of the new high PPI panels

    Very much appreciate how in-depth these videos (and the website) are. You and Hardware/Monitors Unboxed are pretty much the only places to get genuine monitor reviews/information from an actually knowledgeable source - so, please keep it up.
    Personally, I’m very much looking forward to these 32” 4k panels, but I am worried about the DP1.4 w/ DSC connectivity. I’m not really inclined to believe it is the dealbreaker that many on Reddit and CZcams think it is, but I’m curious if you have any plans for an in-depth analysis on if it affects image quality and/or creates additional issues with the user experience?
    I have seen a few comments saying that it can cause obnoxiously long black screens when alt+tabbing on nvidia gpus, and I’m worried that since it will be compressing even more data than normal DSC use cases (i.e. 4k 144hz/165hz) it could exacerbate anything previously perceived as a non-issue. I think an in-depth video like that would go a long way to ease I and many other users woes before making such an expensive purchase.

      This would be great, agreed.
      The HP Omen QD-OLED should have DisplayPort 2.1.
      I've heard that there can be some issues with DSC on Linux as well, and it can theoretically limit supersampling, since it does require display engine hardware to perform DSC.

      Burn out is something you buy, you still have to baby it to last any meaningful amount of time. First oled screen came out in 2009 for samsung phone and 15 years later it is still a problem, so not gone go away unless oled will change from the ground, meaning things that emit light. For now everyone just dodging problem with all the pixel refreshers and brightness compensations to hide burnout of pixels, and these techs is band aid, not armor.

      rttings tested burn in and at first they found worse burn in than in woled panels but then came a firmware update that fixed "burn in" cause turns out it was just buggy software on the pixel refresh side. so it seems burn in is indeed not really bad with qd-oled panels and Dell gives you a 3 year warranty for burn in too

    White oled stack is misleading. Not sure where you found that image, but the original/official LG showed one oled layer blue, one green, one red, actually stacked, to produce white. Then color filters to give r/g/b subpixels respectively, with the white subpixel being clear....
    Samsung doesnt stack blue layers.... Their official information noted one layer of blue, then color filtered with quantum dots.... And no polarizer.

      They might not be quoting a peak luminance figure in their specs. The panel from Samsung has 1000 nits peak luminance in its spec, but each display manufacturer may deliver something different. Eg they may tone it down to lower for one reason or another. So when it comes to actual displays using these panels it will still be important to see independent testing, even though the specs on paper may be the same

You can see it at the timestamp 6:24 in the video titled "Samsung's 3,000-Nit QD-OLED Hides a Secret Weapon | CES 2024". This implies Samsung Display are ahead of LG Display in bringing this format to mass production. If it's possible could you reach out to Samsung Display and get an updated roadmap from them?
