- Hear the evolution and studio production techniques of Paul McCartney for "Come And Get It," as recorded by The Iveys, who became Badfinger upon it's release. www.badfingerlibrary.com
*Found out after finishing the video - Mal Evans played tambourine on this track - Hudba
What a fantastic and important piece of musical history
When this song came out on the radio , many people thought Badfinger was actually the Beatles playing under another name .
That's so cool that would be a huge compliment
Esp. because Pete Ham sounded like a made up name I think.
No they didnt
@@danielmanful
Exactly. Same issue with Beatles tribute bands. Nobody's singing sounds like Paul McCartney or John Lennon. Really, how could anybody confuse Pete or Tom with John or Paul?
@@mangomonkey6938 How could anybody think Klaatu was the Beatles? But somehow they did.
Paul McCartney… the man knows how to get songs to the top of the charts. I was floored when I found out Peter & Gordon’s #1 hit “World Without Love” was written for them by Paul as well.
he has a deep voice smoth
It was given to them rather written for them. Paul had written it earlier and hadn't used it as John Lennon kept laughing at the "Please, lock me away." line.
They you will be even more amazed that the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band #6 hit “I”m the Urban Spaceman” was produce by Apollo C. Vermouth
Peter Asher.. Jane Asher..bro and sis...his ex-gf.. was a great favor
Badfinger also got their name from Paul McCartney and John Lennon (in a roundabout way). John and Paul's song "With A Little Help From My Friends" that was sung by Ringo Starr on the Sgt. Pepper LP had a working title of "Badfinger Boogie". John had hurt his forefinger and was playing the piano keys using his middle finger in place of his forefinger. The boys liked the sound of "Badfinger" to replace their current name "The Ivey's" and the name was born.
They should b voted into the 2021 rock and roll hall
of fame.🌌👁️👁️🌌
be a single member of the band going up to accept and I think he'd probably be lost in the moment
The rain has fallen so many times since then. 50 years worth now. They were just kids. Even Paul.
that's poetic x
Beatles and Badfinger... perfect mix
My thought was that they. We’re cousins.
Shows you why the Beatles were the best. They even gave their hit songs away!! That's how good the Beatles were!! Their the kings of Rock NO doubt!!!
McCartney is producing this having written it and created some amazing music with the Beatles in the previous 7yrs, it was August 1969 and McCartney was just 27yrs old.
Do you seriously think you need to ‘fill us in’?
Thanks for sharing, I love Tom's voice. Paul really believed in them, they were wonderful even as the Iveys with Ron!
He recognized their talent for sure
Great hearing McCartney singing this song👍
oh yeah
Played it constantly, my 2 kids who were babies ,loved it ,they sang it over and over and we called our son ,sonny ,his nick name ,so he loved it .
Paul's count-in is usually preceded by a song that enters the public conscious.
If you think about it, this gem would have been right at home on the Abbey Road album.
Please say instead of Maxwell
@@mangomonkey6938 Nah, that drug-influenced piece of monotonous garbage: I Want You(She So Heavy)!
@@tompaulcampbell
I know, I know....and yet I still prefer I Want You to Maxwell. Maxwell holds nothing for me.
@@tompaulcampbell What are you talking about lol, I Want You is an amazing blues track.
@@mattatta Maxwell's Silver Hammer is amazing as well
THIS IS AN AWESOME BADFINGER EXPERIENCE ON WORKING ON THIS SONG. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS. BADFINGER WAS SUCH A GREAT BAND. AT LEAST WE HAVE THE SONGS TO REMEMBER THEM.
The drums sound amazing in this song
Great job Dan Matovina for providing us w these gems. For those of us who can never get enough Badfinger info and recordings. This was very insightful!!!
Thank you so much for this! I've always tried to imagine what it would have sounded like with Paul coaching them.
Wow! What a great story! How exciting! Ah...to be a fly on the wall during that time!
What a great find, to see a song being birthed and come to fruition . I will never hear this song in the same way...
I remember when this song first came out and was on the radio, and I loved it. It wasn't until later, that I learned about Badfinger as a band, and then even later, that I learned that it started with The Beatles.
Love the band and the song. The behind the scenes clips are wonderful. Thank you Dan.
For a non musical Gumboot like meself, this is brilliant listening to how great Paul was at guiding Pete and the band to nail this great tune. . Thanks for sharing. 😎👍🏻
i feel extremely grateful to be able to hear this footage. i love it so much. absolutely beautiful memories, and what a treasure this audio is :)
The production process is always amazing to hear.
This is a lovely insight into a great song. Really appreciate this being shared 👍🏻
The 2000 19-track CD "The Very Best of Badfinger" is a must-have for any fan. Obviously they sounded like The Beatles on so many songs, but I was always struck by how much Pete Ham and Joey Molland were visual dead ringers for Lennon & McCartney back in 1970.
It’s a great album and such a shame what happened to the band.
Just goes to show what a shite business the music industry is
@@CricketEngland Yeah, but I'll never get over Pete Ham throwing everything away because of financial tragedy. He still had all that talent in the bank and he was only.......27.
wonderful! thanks for this. I was surprised when I found out this was Tom Evans on lead vocals, because it does sound richer than his normal voice. The slowed down tape explains that. would have loved to hear pete hams attempt!
also, I think Paul was terrific. a perfectionist, yes, but you can't argue with great success. he did allow people a little wiggle room with their parts towards the end, and wasn't an absolute control freak.
what a fantastic band badfinger were!
This is gold, I so love this song! Great to hear McCartney being so patient and apologize when he's not on the money. Oops, unintentional pun there....
I enjoyed the absolute stuffing out of this video - THANK YOU
Cool. I’ve never heard this before tonight, despite being a Badfinger fan from the age of 9, when this song came out.
The genius of The Beatles at work!
Outstanding!
Do it again and again. This is what you call a great apprenticeship given by Paul McCartney which Badfinger took on board and which pushed them to high level in both their recording and their songwriting.
Thank you so much for sharing this gem!
And a credit to Tom that Paul chose his singing!!
Love Badfinger....Great band.
Thank you for sharing this.
Truly fascinating video. Thanks.
Thank you for the music and the background to the music excellent stuff
Very nice! Thanks for making this video.
They had a lot to live up to with this McCartney song but boy did they deliver..Peter Hannah was spot on and WHAT a voice 💙 tragically gone far too soon..thanks for putting this together, brilliant. 👍
Of course you meant Pete Ham and it's Tommy singing lead here.
Tom sang this - Pete sang harmonies.
I love this! Thank you so much for creating and posting it.
They would of been untouchable if they stayed with Apple, such a tragedy what they endured, RIP Badfinger 🙏🙏🙏😥😥😥😥
Apple records was winding down
as a record label, and a lousy contract with Warner Bros was part of the group’s demise
incredible stuff well done! badfinger forever
The Ivy's were dear to my heart... luv to them🌌
Uauuu This stuff is pure gold ! “A great songwriter” ? Sorry, he’s simply the best !
I loved this!
That was AWESOME!
Post Revolver, you can hear the development of a future solo career for Paul. I can imagine this to have been a Wings single around '72. Some of them weren't as good as this one.
Nice video editing Dan Matovina thanks
Always love to learn of the evolution that turns a tune in to a sure fire hit.
Covered Baby Blue at an open mike night awhile back and people were going. "What's Breaking Bad?"
The magic Christian is one of my favourite films of all time. Saw it 3 times in a week when it hit the cinemas.
Just Great !!!!!
Very interesting, thank you.....
Fascinating exploration of a hit-in-the-making! McCartney shepherded the band with his inimitable production. Too bad their manager and others spelled doom for a great group.
Very interesting thanks.
I can't think of another band that was screwed over as much as badfinger. So much talent bloody wasted. I loved them so much.
I can think of a band that was screwed over just as bad,the bay city rollers.
Since the Beatles were about to break up , Paul should have just joined this band and became the front man for the band.
They had a great frontman already!!
Pete Ham would not have been happy with that idea, since he was trying to get people to recognize the talents of the Ivey's/Badfinger group. But things never really went his way.
evans was great too ! ...hitting those high notes , singing lead or harmony .
No, I love Wings :(
🙂
Paul helped with this Band' launch for sure. All the Beatles were solo at the end of August 1969 , the last get together was for a photo shoot for the " Hey Jude " Album cover at end of August 1969 .. never a foursome after that !!
Paul McCartney was Brilliant in this Beatles 💙🐞 💛🐞 💚🐞 💜🐞style song that put BADFINGER on the world map & hit on point! Badfinger was great band! And.. " With a little help from they're friends " 🍏.😀
Originally, Paul went in early before a Beatles session and recorded all the parts himself on the demo. There is some bootlegs of that demo here on Utube. Badfinger did a great job with it. I loved that song when i was a kid when it came out. Paul was actually making fun of Allen Klein always telling the Beatles he (allen) could get them money or something they wanted for nothing. Of course, Paul was subtle about that kind of thing where John would have flayed the dude wide open with a composition.
looks like his Beatles buddies were the only people he could flay wide open.
@@Bella-nt7ec shows you the tedious nature of music recording.
very cool!
Thanks!!!!
So that's how Paul works in the studio ❤️
Brilliant
If you think this is odd then you may not know that the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah band #6 hit “I’m the Urban Spaceman” (written by the late Neil Innes) was produced by Apollo C. Vermouth
It's not so odd. Just a Paul McCartney pseudonym. No big deal.
How Cool is This 😎
Thank you Paul.
I don't know what they did exactly on the vocals but at the very end of the finished version that was a pretty clever mix of hamonies.
Fascinating. You can hear Macca the perfectionist to the fore. Maybe infuriating but right
Yes Perfectionist Paul, who drove recording musicians into boredom and frustration from what I have read
@@brockjohnson4116 But like Johnny said, he was right. If you want your music to be imperfect then just don't listen to him. But he knew what he was talking about.
@@brockjohnson4116 While driving the greatest band of all time through their greatest period of creativity.
Omg, that was awesome! Until 10 months ago I'd always thought it was The Beatles who'd done this song because it fits right in with the cheesy Beatles stuff, and Tom's voice sure could sound a whole lot like them when he wanted it to. It's too bad there wasn't a video. I need to see Pete. ❤ 😊
I remember this being in the Movie The Magic Christian. Movie starred Peter Sellers, Ringo Star,
John Cleese, Raquel Welch
The Iveys / Badfinger never put out a bad product, even later, when it was only Tom & Joey.
Papa Paul, shows you how it's done!!!
I have a full. CD of these outtakes. The second disk is mary hopkins.
Yeah, "Those Were the Days" by Mary Hopkins - another great gift from McCartney to an undiscovered artist (at least in the U.S.). That was the most played song on rock radio in New York City for months in Autumn of 1967, along with a little number by The Beatles calle "Hey Jude".
💕
Interesting to listen to
I love that hard hitting voice of Tom. Wasted talents. R I P tom, pete & mike. Wasted talents..❤❤
A piece of pop history.
sir Paul when I grow up I wanna be like you man,,, humble meter please,,,,
Pete Ham was correct when he said that Stan Polley was a soulless bastard... trust me I know being Lou Christie's brother
This sequence shows that the affableness of Paul is not just a front; he uses his good naturedness and ability to remain calm under stress to keep frustrations under control. The Iveys were obviously much more comfortable taking direction from Paul than John and George, as the film "Let It Be" shows.
Yes, there were a lot of takes, which would make people think Paul is being a perfectionist, but half-way through, he tells them that it would be better if they just fuck it. ie they need to loosen up and stop trying to copy the demo too closely. Plus he stopped the takes when HE fucked up, not to correct them.
He’s kind of a Nazi then isn’t he? He demands they do it EXACTLY his way. Then says stop trying to do it my way? You can see the frustrations mounting working with him. Same experience George, John and Ringo had from 1967-69. I don’t think Badfinger ever worked with Paul again after this.
if you want it here it is come and get it
The day The Iveys became the Beatles.
McCartney worked his magic and turned the final product into brilliance.
Interesting
Ma lived 2 doors away from Pete & John Ham Townhill , Gors Avenue, Swansea
I live 10 minutes away from Pete’s home in Gwent Gardens, lol
@@thomsboys77 you know Wheatlys then, know all the area around ,Van Ottens Richie , Robert Anne & Dean closest to Hams ,Fforestfach me,but lived allover World since 7yrs old Swansea Jack forever ..respect man..
As mentioned towards the end of this video, Paul slowed it down a bit. Their voices sounding nothing like the record unless slowed at least a half step, sounds more like a full step to me. Obviously a homerun for the band!
Badfinger!!!
"Initially Pete Ham questioned the offer...but manager Bill Collins pulled him aside and emphasized the opportunity" that's the audio clip I really want to hear
As terrific an artist as Pete was, he seemed to make one bad business decision after another. This would have certainly been a bad move if he had his way. Good thing their manager won that battle.
The Beatles sounded great demoing the song. If they hadn't given it away the bad finger we would think of it as a Beatles song. A Paul McCartney Beatles song.
the Beatles actually never played this song for a demo. Only Paul did the demo as he would shortly do the same for the McCartney LP
Such magic harmonies (curious are the vocals slowed too, or recorded to the slowed track?). Such sure and simple hit writing, and though his version would be great also, smart to turn it over to them and smart for them to take it, plus the new name!
5:13 A little Rock&Roll bass line slipping here lol. Amazing session
Dan what did the guys think of Paul as a producer compared to Todd Rundgren and George Harrison
Toms voice is gold - with that hair and those sexy eyes. His songwriting and with Pete Ham who really should have stuck it out was magical. Their Without you song would keep them in guitar strings once Mariah Carey had a blockbuster with it. A permanent solution to a temporary problem - never the best way out. Artists though huh!
Don’t disrespect people with mental health problems
Don't you mean when Harry Nilsson had a blockbuster hit with "Without You"?
Damn, that was cold 😑😑😑😑
the Beatleologists will luv this x
Bad management! Humble Pie ! Grand Funk Railroad! A lot of the earlier bands in the 70’s were victims!
paul McCartney worked with ham and Joey moland tried to make it last at abbey road EMI Studios
Did Paul write this as a taunt to John Lennon over the Alan Klein rift?
No, it was written for the movie ‘The Magic Christian’
Listen to the words. It's literally a song about Paul offering the band a chance and giving them a song (this song)
@@thomsboys77 Yes, a movie thematically dedicated in part to humans ready, willing, and able to completely degrade themselves in the pursuit of money.
man he in 1969 1 man band its like wings
Bad Finger turned down "It Don't Come Easy" because they thought they had grown out of accepting songs from Beatles, and wanted to be successful with their own songs. In the music business, if someone offers you a number one hit, you take it. Bad decision on Badfingers part.
Better with Ringo star singing it don't come easy.
Just like the Beatles turned down How Do You Do It, a number one hit for Gerry and the Pacemakers. George Martin insisted the boys record the song and the lads resisted as it wasn't their style and insisted that they could write a hit song as well or better. Thus Please Please Me was the Beatle's first number one.
If you listen closely to It Don’t Come Easy, you come pick out Tom’s voice in the high harmonies.
@@vinceboston7451 They told George Martin it was rubbish. "We can't go back to Liverpool with that". George said, "ok you write one better" and they did.
However, it didn't get to number 1 on all the charts, which is why it isn't included on the number ones compilation album, titled 1.
